friends i am deep in the dandadan brainrot and it just occurred to me (i have not read the manga yet so idk but ok):
so. Okarun doesn't actually know why Momo calls him Okarun, right?
And I was thinking about this whole thing about the names. How the names they choose to call each other is the reflection of how much they accept the love they have for each other, which is all nice and cute but.
What if Okarun thinks the reason Momo doesn't call him Ken/Ken Takakura is that she thinks it's SO INCREDIBLY EMBARASSING that he is named after an old famous actor?
and it would be so true to form that they hold onto this misconception and that they get confused by it once they get to talk about the love confession (yes THAT love confession)
like imagine Momo grills him for never calling her by her name and Okarun argues back like "well you're no one to talk! MISS AYASE. you're so embarrassed of my name being the same as some dumb actor that you had to give me a nickname!"
"come again??? :D ..."
"You're embarrassed that my name is like that one actor Ken Takakura! >:( why else would you never want me to say my name! >:'((("
and then momo is stuck with the mortifying ordeal of explaining that she has this HUGE crush on beloved 20th century actor ken takakura like "nonono you got it all wrong okar—sorry hnnggg k e n. i. had a crush. on ken takakura :l "
"????? I'm Ken Takakura."
"i know :l so is Ken Takakura."
"so. you. you have a crush. on Ken Takakura. the actor. You couldn’t say my name because you had the hots for Ken Takakura."
"I do. I do have the hots for Ken Takakura."
"the actor."
"no. The real one."
"so the actor? "
"no :l Ken Takakura. the other one"
"ah. I see, the other one."
WAIT. DBDHWSHDBDBDB I'M THE OTHER ONE?!?!!?!?!?!!!@@!!!!!!!
and once okarun's brain restarts and momo asks him why he'd never call her by her name either, he just goes like "i have a crush on momo ayase. 💀 i am an awkward fellow after all 💀"
#sbsbwhszbsb listen idk how it goes yet but i like to believe becoming a bit of a little shit is in the cards for little baby okarun#once he gets more confident#i can See it#also i could rant for DAYS about how cool the metaphorical 'trying to find his balls' and 'tiny!momo' are excellent and hilarious#representations of the challenges they have to overcome to reach character growth#like for okarun it's confidence#for momo it's growing out of denying her feelings#anyway here is a morsel of stupidity#momokarun#momo ayase#ayase momo#ken takakura#takakura ken#okarun#dandadan#dandadan spoilers#spoiler adjacent actually#not really a spoiler

I feel like dandadan sexualization discourse goes around every once in a while and some of it is valid but I do feel like for some reason no one ever brings the slightest nuance to the table that the comedy manga includes characters being nude and saying balls a lot possibly because the main target audience of teenage boys just genuinely believes nudity and dick jokes are really funny
#like not saying you have to like it but i think it's pretty obvious every time okarun gets his balls stolen its intended to be ridiculous#i feel confident in saying aliens want to steal my penis is a comedy concept that has the potential to go triple platinum in any teen male#friend group

So...Okarun definitely has Thoughts about the Ayase family dynamic, right?
Every time I see Momo and Seiko interacting in the show, I can't help but wonder what's going on inside Okarun's head. Like, he heard Momo gassing her up when they first met and talking about how much she regrets her past actions while they were ghost/alien hunting--but then the first time he sees them together they constantly fight and call each other stupid/hag.
Whatever you think his home situation is, he has to find the dissonance between Momo's words to him and actions to her grandmother strange, and maybe even concerning. He probably hasn't said anything because:
He's an awkward fellow, after all.
He does see the moments where they stop pretending to hate each other.
But he definitely notices that things are strange; probably has already come to the conclusion that their current behavior stems from Momo's temper tantrum and years-long silent treatment. And the fact that both Ayase women seem to be allergic to talking about their feelings or apologizing.
So what if one day...he decides to meddle?
He definitely thinks it's not his place to do so, but at the same time he is falling madly in love with this girl. And her grandmother has accepted him into her home, feeds him, helped them both with their paranormal problems, and given him the first place that he feels he belongs in. He feels like he owes it to them to at least facilitate a better understanding between them. They both saved him--keep saving him--and he wants to at least save them from feeling like the only way they can communicate is with insults and bringing up the past.
However, doing something about a rocky relationship without making it worse is even harder than it sounds, and Okarun isn't exactly swimming in interpersonal relationship experience. He hasn't figured out what to do, and the only thing he has decided for sure is that he can't rely on their other friends for this task. They mean well, and most of them have more experience with making up with people than he does, but he thinks that they are a bit clumsy for something so delicate. So for now, he just tries to keep them closer together and distract Ayase-san when she gets a bit too vitriolic.
Meanwhile: Seiko and Momo are extremely grateful for the craziness of the last few months bringing them closer together than they've been in literal years, and have no interest in rocking the boat and upending all the progress they've made--even if they think things could improve more quickly.
Also they are a bit confused why four-eyes recently prefers to quietly hang out with Momo in the living room while Seiko watches her shows instead of letting her drag him up to her room like usual.

NSFW UNDER THE CUT
you were both in your room, at your grandma’s house. but she was out doing god knows what, and you two were alone. alone together, sitting on your bed, alien magazines discarded on the sides. all that could be hear was the gasps for air coming from both of you, as you kissed intensely, hands roaming over each other. you were touching his cheeks, his neck, his shoulders, while his hands were on your waist, your hips, and your thighs. Okarun was the one whimpering in the kiss, slowly leaning towards you, encouraging you to lay down. his heart was beating so fast, he couldn’t think straight, yet he still was feeling shy. all that Okarun wanted was you, his half lidded eyes undressing you by the gaze they held over your body. his hands hesitantly grabbed the hem of your shirt, pulling it up, revealing your beautiful chest, still covered by your bra. he was fast to pull it down, finally revealing your breasts to his eyes. he couldn’t help but gulp. Okarun had been feeling confident up to now, but seeing the actual boobs was something else. his gaze met yours, and no words were needed for him to understand you gave him consent to touch whatever he’d like.
"G-God miss y/n.. you are so beautiful.. you look amazing.." he breathed out, his hands finally grabbing what he had his mind on since the beginning. He squeezed them, rubbed them with his thumbs, moved them around in his hands. he was so nervous, yet so happy and flustered. it felt so good under his skin, it felt so good to see your pretty little face blush and switch expressions from his touch. of course Okarun gave some attention to your nipples too, pinching them and twisting them around in his fingers. he was panting, almost drooling, his mind fogged and only focused on one thing : your stunning boobs. you could be sure this was not the last time Okarun would be fondling them, with his new discovered passion for your soft assets.
"F-Fuck.. so soft.. so pretty.. and all mine.."

I was thinking about something…
Spoilers under the cut!

It’s curious how every other girl who fell for Okarun did after seeing him like Turbokarun or after his “glow up” of confidence.
Like Aira and Vamola fell for him after meeting his yokai form, when he was strong, fast and depressed haha. Although their encounters were in different contexts (Aira thought he was a demon and Vamola was looking for a strong man to marry).
And what to say about Rin, who literally made a self insert fanfic with him as a vampire in her mind. Again as well, after noticing his yokai form.
But with Momo was different. She fell for him when he was still the invisible weird boy, no strength nor social skills at all. Not even balls 😭 He was really self conscious about his true self poor baby and worried about making Momo tired of him. Even when he got curse he didn’t want to disturb her with his problem.
It was in that exact scene, when he handed her his uniform to wear and said his famous line when Momo fell. This kind little and shy gentleman won the baddie’s heart and he didn’t even notice.
And she thought “what a loser, I wanna smooch him so bad” or something like that hahaha
Momo fell first but Ken fell harder.

I love this pannel <3
I’m yapping now. Anyway sleep well and drink water

I really love how in Dan Da Dan, Okarun is sooooooooooo insecure that basically every single thing that happens makes him believe that Momo will stop being his friend.
(And isn’t that relatable af my dear socially awkward, low self-esteem friends?)
But Momo… Momo is always seeking out Okarun, always trying to include him, always wanting to talk to him and be with him.
And it’s so obvious to us, the viewers, that Momo loves Okarun soooo much, that she loves talking about aliens and ghosts with him! But it’s not to him! At all!!!
And not in a "oh it’s anime, of course the main guy won’t notice how the girl loves him" way, but in a "this guy really thinks that he’s unlikable and he’s wired to believe that everyone will leave him eventually" way.
Like… when Jiji shows up and Okarun sees how cool he looks and Grandma tells him that he’s Momo’s first love… he immediately thinks "That’s it. We’re done. She’ll never want to stay with me now that HE is here…". He’s jealous and he’s so scared that they’re "still in love". He thinks she’ll go out with Jiji, that she’ll stop liking the supernatural and only do things Jiji likes…
Meanwhile Momo is all like "why the FUCK is Jiji here? Okarun, help me get rid of him." And while they do bond over Jiji’s story, she very clearly doesn’t like him like that. She’s STILL seeking out Okarun, and she obviously won’t stop liking the supernatural because, yes, it’s something she likes to share with Okarun, but it’s also something that, by now, she likes period. It’s something they have in common and no pretty boy is gonna change that!
And it’s not just Jiji that’s threatening Okarun and Momo’s friendship in his mind, it’s everything. Everything he does, everything he says, every moment where he thinks he failed at something… because he’s just got no self-esteem at all.
Thankfully, Momo’s very vocal and straightforward about how he needs to stop pushing people away all the time, and even though sometimes she teases him a little too much, she’s got good intentions. She keeps doing and saying little things to reassure him. Like the whole "see you tomorrow" thing or how she goes out of her way to eat with him, how she always asks for his opinion or his help (like every time Aira says something batshit crazy, she always asks him "she’s still on with this shit?" It’s a detail, but I just love it so much). And Okarun didn’t change his whole mindset just because his new friend told him that he should "stop with the self-loathing already" two or three times. Something like that is obviously buried deep and it takes time and work to change and I love that they didn’t just make him suddenly all confident and shit.
Gosh I love this batshit insane anime and these crazy characters and their wonderful relationships!!!!
#dan da dan#dandadan#okarun#momo ayase#dandadan aira#dandadan jiji#this is a ramble post#that I wrote in 15 minutes in my car#I’ll probably come back to it later to try and explain myself better#but I got shit to do right now XD#my post

What happens when you let a film nerd make an anime?
Fuuga Yamashiro (山代風我) joined Science Saru in 2017 as an Assistant Production Manager during production of "Night Is Short, Walk on Girl." He was essentially Studio Co-founder Masaaki Yuasa's secretary, but he worked his way up to assistant director on "Keep Your Hands off Eizouken" and finally got to direct his own first full Anime series, Dandadan.

Having worked so closely with one of the greatest living auteur directors, you might think he would share that overpowering individual creative influence, but as he has pointed out in interviews himself, it's much the opposite.
Instead of relying on his own creative voice, which he doesn't seem confident about in interviews, he literally collects techniques from his favorite movies, breaking them down into storyboards and adding them to his arsenal to re-contextualize later. And as you may be able to tell from watching Dandadan, his biggest influences aren't anime and manga, but live action film -- something he seems to have studied obsessively.
And when you compare the anime to the original manga (which itself is already filled with references to old movies and TV) subtle adaptation choices make the deft application of techniques borrowed from other storytellers very clear. Every choice is made for a reason and furthers the story being told in some way; nothing is there for no reason. like the simple, controlled camera pans and tilts that make the serpoian spaceship feel cold and sterile, or the crazywackysilly, un-predictable wide-angle camera movements that intrude on that cold sterile world when turbo granny shows up.
In one interview during the production of "Keep Your Hands off Eizouken" Yamashiro pulls out his notebook where he had collected all these techniques and gives an example:
"There's a technique called 'Dolly Zoom', which is a technique that changes the perspective of the background while keeping the size of the subject." […] "In 'Cult of Chucky,' which I saw recently, there is a scene in which a long passageway is filmed in telephoto, while a wheelchair moves forward. The character is 'getting closer, but the viewer feels farther away'. This is the kind of thing I collect." […] "I'd like to combine these things in various ways and do it in animation." (I took some liberties with this, the translation was pretty rough)
And sure enough, that exact same type of dolly zoom rears its head in Dandadan as Okarun sprints away from Turbo Granny and the mouth of the tunnel stretches impossibly into the distance.
It may seem counterintuitive to ascribe too much importance to the creative vision of one person who specifically talks about his own lack of strong creative vision, (and to be clear, he's far from the only person playing a major role) but I think it's precisely that encyclopedic knowledge of film techniques and that pragmatic, meticulous attitude that may have acted as a stabilizing force for Yuasa, and that also provides some needed structure to a ball of pure energy like Dandadan, while still preserving its essence and the eclectic influences that it wears on its sleeve.
Also, mad respect for using the seventh installment of the Child's Play franchise as your example of a dolly zoom instead of, like, Vertigo, Jaws, or Goodfellas.
This is just a sliver of what I talk about in this full video! A minuscule piece of the pie! Some tiny little crumbs for the peasants! So if you consider yourself worthy, go watch the whole video. I think it's good.
youtube
Uhh also reblog! I spent way too long on that intro animation, so I need it. Bad.

I don’t know if this was the author’s intention, but I like to think that in DanDaDan, Jiji and Aira were meant to be parodies of typical anime protagonists and Okarun and Momo are who you get when the author liked the side characters over the leads.
My reasoning:
1) Aira and Jiji have the anime protagonist hair colors (pink, red) while Okarun and Momo have regular hair colors.
2) Momo would be the high school bully/mean girl in a different series. The one who gets in the way of the likable MC.
3) Okarun could probably pass as the lead in some harem series since he’s the unpopular geek. But the thing that makes me think that he would be a side character is that he’s incredibly obsessed with the occult and he’s not afraid to show it. He has too much personality to be that kind of character, so a better comparison would be that he would be the weird friend of the MC in a different series.
4) Aira deluded herself into believing that she’s the main character of the series. She has the typical storyline of a protagonist in that she was a regular girl who came across a magical item, but the story makes clear that she’s just delusional and doesn’t know what she’s talking about.
5) While Jiji has that main protagonist trope where all the characters fall in love with him, he’s portrayed as the most obnoxious, annoying character in the group.
6) Aira, the nice girl who has a heart of justice like a typical protagonist, is revealed to actually be shallow and vain.
7) My follow-up to point 5, Jiji is introduced like the handsome male lead, but he’s drawn/animated in such a derpy way that you don’t really get to see his handsome face a great deal of the time.
8) You can read Momo and Okarun’s character arcs as them becoming more like the typical anime protagonists. Okarun starts off as the weirdo occult enthusiast who no one likes and develops into the cool, confident guy who everyone finds handsome. Momo starts off as the standoffish mean girl who pushes people away and develops into more of a welcoming, kind girl who learns how to be more trusting of others (especially when she meets Vamola).
In a way, Okarun and Momo become what we, the audience, thought Jiji and Aira were going to be when they were introduced. They’re side characters who became the main characters.

One of the big points of Zuma as a character is that this guy who is 100% MOMO'S TYPE shows up, and she has.... Absolutely no interest in him. They spend a bunch of time alone together and she just... Doesn't give a shit. She gets flustered ONCE and that's mostly cus she was surprised his behavior changed and then immediately snaps out of it and scolds him for using up some of his power, not cus she actually has any interest in him
And it's a good way to show that like... Yeah... She's already got feelings for someone else. She's got no interest in anyone else, not even a guy who truly does check all her previous boxes for what kinda person she likes!!! No more room her heart is already full of big dumb brave nerd sorry buddy
And like, it's good cus they've shown the same w okarun more before that, multiple other people having interest in him and he just entirely is not interested (even if he does get flustered cus, like, yeah they ARE PRETTY and he's not at all used to that kind of attention!!! That's a normal reaction!!! But that's one of the differences in their personalities!! It doesn't mean he's less devoted or anything, he's just not as comfortable and confident with it as momo is) so it's good to really show that BOTH OF THEM are equally in deep, it's not one sided at all, cus tbh previously it was rlly only jiji around acting as a "rival" and IMO she made it clear she wasn't into him anymore but it was kinda subtle so I could understand some people not picking up on that, so having it be much more overt and obvious is good!!!
And yeah I do usually hate the whole "everyone is into this character" harem type trope but given it's happening to BOTH OF THEM and they both literally only have eyes for each other makes it more funny than cringe so it's fine. Plus like can you blame any of em?? These two are absolutely catches!!! They're wonderful people!!! My children are perfect of course everyone is in love with them. As they should be.

Chapter 43: You Won't Get Away with This!

I just enjoyed this entire speech Okarun says while beating up The Evil Eye. His priorities in this fight are: Momo, Jiji, himself. That just goes to show how important his friends are to him, and how much self confidence he has now.
I thought about the contrast between Yokarun and The Evil Jiji as they fought. Since Jiji is athletic already, The Evil Eye doesn't need to hold back when using Jiji's body and is able to go at full power all the time. It's like a seasoned kickboxer with the mentality of a child, "who's gonna stop me" kind of thinking.
Yokarun, however, can only go all out twice so far. If Turbo Granny had possessed someone with a stronger body, would that change how many times they can go all out? Can they go all out all the time like The Evil Eye with Jiji? Or is TG so powerful that it would take a toll on even the strongest vessel?

watching dandadan rn and it’s so much fun. the centre stage is shared by the main duo in a very dynamic and unique manner despite the setup being rather tropey at the start. like yes this could be just another shy, nerdy loner guy with the popular, confident girl setup but i’m SO glad that okarun & momo’s characterisations are ever so skillfully subverted. okarun is a nerd but he’s not exactly shy. he’s very passionate and can be very loud and assertive when the topic matters to him. and yes momo’s confident but she’s bashful and silly and goofy and smart!!! and they BANTER!!! they argue!! okarun calls momo out and momo calls him out and they get along as FRIENDS before they get along in any romantic capacity. momo is okarun’s first friend and okarun is likely the first guy in momo’s life to treat her with genuine respect and admiration. even when they butt heads over aliens vs ghosts, it’s from a position of equality, than any kind of one-sided dismissive rebuttal. they both have cool powers and they work well together as a team. they are both flawed and they both inspire change in each other (okarun with his low self esteem hindering his building friendships and momo’s lack of tact coming off as rude when flustered; both these aspects are addressed and they’re both working on it).
what i’m getting at is... it doesn’t exactly feel forced to see their relationship develop which is always such a problem in shouen anime for me (though this last year has given us many amazing pairings). plus they’re so. freaking. cute. like i can see them on my screen for hours and not get bored. ugh, i just love them.

Details I Noticed in Dandadan! #10!
Welp seem I missed some days after all.
For this one, rather than the manga, I will point out one of the detail in the anime I really like!
One of them are;
Surprise, turned skepticism, then acceptance
Or maybe trust, I lean more to him trusting momo's words.
Also the next scene too:
Where okarun's trust, is being strengthen by momo's resolve and determination. And how that same feeling is conveyed through their gesture.
How he was still not quite confident in himself (you can see by how his hands is spread out a few second before Momo grab him, I'd say it was because he still have some doubts, not for Momo, but for himself) but then Momo grabbed him, trusting him to work together in this one, and finally, okarun reciprocating the same feeling Momo is projecting to him, by grabbing her equally with a tight grip, then helped her to her feet.
Man... So nice to finally able to ramble about my muse, anyway! Hope to see you in the next post!

Dandadan Episode 7 Review - A Mother's Love
If Episode 4 hasn’t put Science Saru on the map for high quality animation, then this episode surely did. I haven’t read the source material, but even as an anime-only watcher, I can definitely see the love and passion the studio puts into this. It’s crazy how a Japanese anime studio owned by a Korean person can make such invigorating quality.
The rest of the fight with Acrobatic Silky was animated well. I love how the kids outwitted her by running away just so her hair gets caught in the nook and cranny of the warehouse. Okarun manages to defeat her by going full throttle. However, their victory isn’t a happy one as devouring Aira caused her to die. Turbo Granny explained that since she’s an ordinary person, being devoured by a spirit would easily kill someone. I sort of like that detail, honestly. There’s no anime logic about how she could survive this. She’s dead and that is what the rest of the episode is about.
What I also like is that seeing her dead easily causes Momo and Okarun to start doing what they can like telling Turbo Granny to call the ambulance and for Momo to resuscitate her using her psychic hands. Though, it does feel odd that a group of teenagers know how to resuscitate someone so skillfully, even if it’s an attempt. They’re both not doctors and are on the opposite spectrum of them. The only way she can be saved is having Acrobatic Silky connect her aura to Aira’s like connecting two cords together.
That’s where the highlight of the episode comes in the form of Silky’s tragic backstory. Man, it broke my heart seeing Silky’s life before her unfortunate end. She was a single mother working as a prostitute alongside several jobs in order to provide for her and her beloved daughter who was her entire world and her purpose for living. Her daughter was sweet in that she was essentially her light in her life. She worked hard in order to buy the red dress that eventually becomes what she wears as a ghost and she was also teaching her daughter ballet. The tragedy comes from debt collectors or mobsters coming in to assault her and then they later took her daughter away, which is severely tragic because the sequences of her life before the tragedy shows that her daughter just celebrated her fifth birthday. If the mobsters are related to trafficking, this means that her daughter’s fate became that of a trafficked child and that’s horrendous in itself. Also, props to Hina Kino for voicing the daughter. She's excellent at creating a child-like voice, especially with how she wailed.
Silky’s dance sequence before meeting her end was seriously beautiful, yet so tragic. The scenery with the starry night was gorgeous but Silky starts dancing. Ballet is an elegant, graceful and poised style of dancing and that’s how she decided to meet her end. The way it was animated was so gorgeous. Also, if you noticed, Silky’s dancing was used in the full music video of Dandadan’s opening song.
There are some people out there wondering if Silky’s daughter is Aira. She’s not. When Silky became a ghost, she could only stand listlessly until little Aira came and mistook her for her recently deceased mother. Realizing that she had a daughter, Silky latched onto Aira and decided to protect her until it became obsessive and psychotic.
This sequence also showcases why Aira behaved the way she did earlier. She’s a narcissist primarily because of what her father had said about her needing to become stronger in order to let her mother be proud of her once she sees her again. That was why she developed a high self-confidence in order to one day show her late mother. She may have been insufferable before but the memories have completely humbled her. The way she hugged Silky just so she could have solace and not be forgotten in death was such a powerful scene. This shows that underneath her pompous attitude, Aira had a kind heart. My opinion of her instantly changed after this. Wow. I legit shed some tears.
I wonder if Dandadan’s story is just encountering a ghost or an alien and learning of their stories or what not. There doesn’t seem to be an overall grand scheme of things. I like that honestly. It’s just a story about kids encountering the supernatural and learning a lot of life lessons amidst the craziness. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Anyways, what are your thoughts about this episode?

DANDADAN 182
I have a really bad feeling about this, i feel like something bad will happen and this is gonna be the last time Okarun and Momo will see each other, but I really hope it's not the case.

I'm kinda worried about Okarun's team too, i know Aira and Kinta are strong, they're probably one of the strongest fighters in their group but we don't know how many people in school CSG gave powers to. Right now, Okarun doesn't have any powers, Rin and Kouki aren't much of a fighter like Aira and Kinta, so if they're going to be outnumbered without Momo who serves as their strategist during battles, I think it's gonna be hard for them. I'm kinda confident in Momo's side, I mean Jiji and Zuma are there, Vamola, although she's underestimated she's actually pretty though and most of all, Seiko is there with them.
Also, CSG asking an alien to help him out is bad news.

#i was kinda hoping csg isn't that bad / evil but i guess he is?#dandadan#dan da dan#dandadan spoilers#dan da dan spoilers#dandadan 182#ayase momo#ken takakura#okarun#aira shiratori#jiji#jin enjoji#unji zuma#vamola#kinta sakata#seiko ayase#ddd
