ROTT SPOILERS
Man, that ending really just ruined my emotional state, and I've been in this weird mood of "That didn't happen, right?" to "DreamWorks really can't handle series ending movies, huh" to "Jim wouldn't give up the amulet like that without a plan" to "I'm bitterly happy it concluded, but I'm so frustrated that I have a headache because that ending leads to a complete loss of everything they learned and accomplished"
I dont understand the writing. I saw Guillermo credited as a writer, and I'm wondering if the directors are to blame then. Cause while the plot was pretty cohesive, it felt like some stuff was rushed or kinda like brushed over so everything could keep pace together. Like, after the first act of the movie everything started to feel a little disjointed, and then, like, I feel, like, the time traveling element is a bit... nonsensical. We already established what would happen if Jim decided not to take the amulet. Draag took his place and the Eternal Night happened and the world essentially ended, because Jim needed to become the Trollhunter.
Like, I can't understand the logic why Jim would let go of everything he said was meant for him and lead to him, it was all purposeful because he was meant to be the Trollhunter. He died for that realization, literally and figuratively (in the mental state to become more.)
You can't-- The writers can't just expect that ending to make any sense when Jim is the only person to remember anything but he reset everything to EPISODE ONE.
And also, why and how did everyone just assume Jim meant he would go back to prevent everything by going back to the beginning instead of, like, a couple days prior or a year prior or something
What does him going back to the beginning, giving Toby the responsibilities of the amulet-- Actually, hold on, what does Toby have now that he didn't at the beginning of the series now that time got retconned after a hard fought good ending that got restarted? Everything got a fresh start soo.... whatever Toby acquired or learned or accomplished in his character arc the first time around doesn't exist. Not to mention what does the amulet see in Toby now?!
The amulet wouldn't choose Toby just because Jim told him to take the canal. Jim doesn't have that authority. The amulet would have found a way back to Jim or something. Nothing against Toby, but, like, I don't think he would have the fortitude or capabilities to endure what was required of Jim to become the Trollhunter.
Nothing would play out the same. Everything is different standing at the divergence of Toby hearing the amulet. It's automatically a doomed timeline, lmao. I'm sorry, but??
I hate what happened with Nomura. That was really uncool how they took her out. Like, I get how they wrote her death and I guess that reads fine, but it was not executed well. It was too quick, too sudden, unworthy. Just poor.
I don't think Strickler needed to sacrifice himself because it was for nothing anyway. I mean to be fucking fair, what did they think highly explosive human made bombs were going to do against an ancient wizard wielding a giant titan of ice?? It was to be expected that it wouldn't work. Yes, yes, they were doing all that they could, but after all they'd encountered with magic and shit you would think they'd be a little smarter about their choices. It was just unnecessary. And while I did cry, especially because I felt bad for Jim and his mom, I have to ask what the fuck was that with his dad? Why did Barbara bring that up for it to go nowhere? No insight, no plot push forward, no revelations, just the same we've been told before and a "We don't give up no matter what" line.
I loved the fight with the two titans. It was good and well executed and hard-hitting. Nira died and her death was for a reason, a purpose.
Toby's death was impactful and sad, and he did stay by Jim to the end. It was for a purpose and it written well to work.
But Trollhunters have never had a good relationship with handling character deaths, imo. They're too fast to move on or the pacing sucks or it's like out of nowhere and done and now we stew with that death. Like, they hit emotionally, but more so because we loved those characters, not really because they died
I absolutely hate retconning deaths. It's a psych out. It ruins the mood. It makes it pointless. It pads out time. It's exhausting unless handled right and with a purpose.
The ROTT ending was baaaad. To be clear, Jim starting completely over was questionable and confusing and skeptical, but what made it baaaad was him giving Toby the amulet. I need context. I need an explanation. Why? What's the difference now? What will change? Will anything change? What's the new outcome??
Like, if they had used the last couple of minutes to breeze by everything again to catch us back up to the retconned ending to show what would happen with Toby being the new Trollhunter, then I might not be as sour and salty and bitter and other nasty flavors of mood.
But you can't tell me everything will play exactly as it did before. Absolutely not. Character arcs lost. Character development undone. Character relationships will be different. Big, impactful choices will differ or not exist at all or have vastly different outcomes. Nothing will be the same, and nothing will be better for this.
I just. Don't. Understand. I know some things were cut, but I don't see how those things would make the writing for the ending better unless things cut were explicitly on the ending and we're missing severe context for Jim's decision.
Sigh. Whatever. I'm gonna fucking pout and try to be 76% content with what we got.

🔥 + Star Fox Assault ((HERE WE GO))
[ Send me a “ 🔥 “ for an unpopular opinion. | Accepting! ]
🔥 Star Fox Assault
I’m going to put this under a cut because I have a lot of opinions on this game and a lot of it is negative and I don’t want to people to get into a crisis over it. If you like it, then look under it - it's your own fault.
I am not fond of Star Fox Assault to the point it's my least favorite in the series. This in itself is the unpopular opinion.
Sure I couldn’t stand Fox from Star Fox Adventures as a smarmy womanizer who was downright rude and snarky, Andross came out of no where, and the final end game was rushed after Cloudrunner Fortress where Andross came like the plot tumor he was in game. But I got lost within the world, reading the little details, and that Rare shine mesmerized me even if I could not stand Fox's mean personality and how Krystal was never a major character despite waiting for Dinosaur Planet to come out for years to play her.
Sure Command was a soap opera of drama between Krystal and Fox, bad writing all around, haphazardly placed endings, needless push in of Andross’ ghost, some additions of characters of an already under developed cast, and a terrible translations. But by then it was already in the grave as a series, so all I did was laugh and enjoy the trash fire while I enjoyed multiplayer for as long as it was up along with some of the new characters introduced. (Lucy and Amanda especially.)
But Star Fox Assault gets me. Maybe it’s because it’s the aesthetics, maybe it’s because I can’t remember the music, maybe it’s the feeling of being let down from a game you had decent expectations for. But Star Fox Assault to me was one of the worst games in the series due to how it tried to emotionally manipulate me. You think your skills or decisions can effect the plot or the routes? Nope, reset the entire mission.
The voice acting was wooden when it came to Fox. The only things that were memorable game wise for me were the on rail missions, although Sargasso Space Zone’s scenery was one to give a compliment for. The battles at best, were not that memorable. The awkward pauses of showing the completed missions before the boss was defeated rather than watching the scene play out, wrecked the immersion. Honestly, if you mixed it with Ace Combat (Since Namco did create the game in the first place) I wouldn’t probably be so harsh on it in truth. The multiplayer was good, but all you people who played Wolf to dominate the others were scrubs.
But let’s raise the stakes! Let’s kill off some characters! But nobody we actually care about because there shouldn’t be actual stakes! Remove the ugliness from the series, make everything beautiful as most get a make over. Wolf, Leon, and Panther can be more anti-heroes now with this make over and bad ugly people like Andrew and Pigma out of the picture. Peppy would no longer fly on the team. Pepper would definitely need to recover, so now he would be completely irrelevant from now on!
Sexier, newer, better, in the times! Trying to reach for nostalgia yet denying it and kicking it aside. Leaving all the remaining cast being without teeth or being a threat anymore.
Plot? What about it? The presentation doesn’t matter, so let’s not explain anything new or what happened at the many things that were completely unanswered. Drop drama bombs willy nilly, kill off the Sharpclaws and the Cloudrunners, no one really cares about that! Krystal is a telepath? Appearently not really a useful one because Fox actually senses that Peppy and others are alive and not her. Good going.
While I enjoyed the dynamic with Slippy, Krystal, Peppy, ROB, and Falco? Everything else was a bit of a slog to go through especially when I couldn’t stand Fox. Fox was pushed from place to place rather than being a force of himself. He got thrown around, in cut scenes you could not control in the middle of the level. Which is a complete contrast to the feeling I had in Star Fox, Star Fox 2, 64, Adventures, Command, and Zero. It didn’t matter how good you were, Fox was going to be helpless or incompetent.
I feel one of the biggest reasons I wasn’t invested however, is because every game up to that point (and even afterwards) felt like a proper war. Talking enemies with a face (Scales, Andross, Star Wolf, the many mooks, and even the Anglar Empire.) rather than faceless insects that just wanted to absorb and conquer.
It was a long game with no real replay ability aspects to me because you can’t go down different paths. Maybe a few different lines. I think it’s because it’s one of the first games that let me down, up until that point I managed to get decent games to play and this was the first to outright bore me to tears and disappoint me. So perhaps I’m biased.
The good points of the game however?
Beltino Toad.
Panther.
The dynamic of the team outside of Fox. Krystal when she wasn't attached to Fox was intergrated well.
Some neat concept art of monkeys and dogs.
The ship designs, were okay even if they were overly complicated but it was cool.
Andrew starting a rebellion even if that went completely no where. (Even if I predicted such a thing in my stories in 2003 that I never uploaded and thank god I never did because that would be a war crime. It was melodramatic nonsense.)
The Sargasso Space Station.
The multiplayer was fun.
And that’s it. In other words, not fond of the game but more power to you if it introduced you to the series or you enjoy it.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ A Little Green - IV - Enoch O’Connor
POSTED: December 1st, 2017
WORD COUNT: 2,062
REQUESTED: @cosmixheart
A/N: The end is here. I hope you enjoyed this mini-series. I have another fic I’m working on, but I’m taking a short break from writing Enoch because I feel like if I write too much of him for too long I'll run out of ideas. I hope y’all are ready for some twilight, cuz that's what I’m hitting you with next
The doors burst back open, and Barron shoved Jake into the room with so much force it almost sent him over the back of the couch. Once Barron was gone Jake went strain to action, stating that since it was getting dark, the only way they stood a chance was if they stayed inside since they wouldn’t even be able to see their shadows.
“He’s quite right,” Miss. Avocet said, “now, where does Miss. Peregrine keep her weapon?”
Enoch gestured behind him to the other room, and Y/N ran to the room without a word, dragging Enoch with her. He ran ahead of her, turning to corner to where garden plants were. He handed out the garden tools, passing one to Y/N, and the next to Jake.
He went to pass one to Emma when the phone rang. Emma took the garden tool from Jake, telling him that he should go answer the phone. Jake went to get the phone while Emma went to go help the others. Y/N went to go follow, but Enoch grabbed her arm, pulling her into his chest.
“Enoch, we really don’t have time,” Enoch shushed her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
“I’m glad you came back,” Enoch said, running a hand through her hair briefly before stepping away, “Let’s go.”
Everyone was posted up in the parlour room with some kind of weapon. Ms. Avocet was giving instructions to everyone, telling them that above all, they were to stay safe and leave the hollow to her. She went to address everyone with garden tools, but was pulled back through the wall but what could have only been a hollow.
Jake dove for the crossbow she dropped, laying down underneath the table as he watched for the hollow. Y/N watched anxiously, trying to see any hint of where the hollow could be. It was growling from in front of her, and Y/N stubbled back when more of the wall was destroyed.
Enoch ran forward to Jake, pushing him back to only be grabbed by the hollow. Y/N heard Fiona scream and watched desperately as Enoch was smashed into the window, then to the wall on the opposite side of the room. Jake yelled at everyone to get upstairs while he aimed for an opening.
Emma, Olive and Y/N helped the kids over the back of the couch and into the next room. The two followed after the kids, leaving Y/N, Jake and Enoch on the other side. Jake took the shoot and hit the Hollow, causing it to let out a growl as it dropped Enoch. Y/N quickly rushed to his side to help him up.
Y/N pushed Enoch ahead of her to the couch, climbing over after him. He grabbed her hand as she landed to pull her after him. She could hear the hollow destroying the house behind them as they ran up the stairs. They met up with the other kids in the attic, where the bomber planes could be heard.
Jake stuck his head out the window, “Fiona, is there anything you can do with that tree?”
Fiona gave a nod a quick yes, climbing out the window to get to the tree. Jake stated that they were going out the window, and one by one everyone climbed out the window. Olive stayed inside to help the children while Enoch waited outside to Catch the children coming down.
When Y/N got onto the roof she made a beeline for Fiona. She remembered what Jake said, and slipped her necklace off and looped it over Fiona’s head. The stone almost instantly glowed, and the tree branch grew faster. In no time the branch was on the roof and everyone was hurrying across it. Once everyone was far from the house, they turned back in time to see Jake and Emma floating down as the house exploded behind them.
Almost as soon as the bomb hit it was gone, cycling from day to night as if the loop was resetting with the house almost fully intact before going back to night, with the house engulfed in flames. The loop was gone.
After a brief discussion on the beach, Y/N and the others found themselves swimming deep into the water to a shipwreck not far from shore. Emma was going through the boat, blowing air around to push the water out of the boat. As air filled it slowly rose to the surface at a sharp angle that knocked everyone back into the far wall. Once the boat breached the surface of the water they set off to Miss. Avocet’s loop.
While Jake, Millard and Emma when through the loop to 2016, Y/N, trailed Enoch around with the jars of hearts he was able to salvage from the house. She handed him jar after jar as he reanimated the many skeletons that were on the boat. Once they were all awake and armed with weapons Enoch sent them through the loop. Y/N and Enoch ran after them to watch them fight the candy covered hollows.
Once the hollows were taken care of they ran into the Blackpool tower to take care of Baron. Everyone split up all around the stands, waiting to ambush Barron and his men. The fight was a mess. Jake missed every shot he took and everything everyone did was countered. It wasn’t until Bronwyn was almost frozen that Y/N stumbled upon her peculiarity.
Y/N ran towards the pool, grabbing a broken piece of metal to break the ice open. The ice was too thick, and Y/N felt hot tears pour down her face. In her anger she gave one last attempt, punching the ice and fell right through it as it liquified. Sputtering around, Y/N pulled Bronwyn out of the water, pulling her into a tight hug.
When Bronwyn gasped Y/N looked up to see the man with the Ice peculiarity freezing Olive. Y/N focused on the water and watched amazed as it floated up around her in a ring. The man was still distracted, so Y/N used that to her advantage, moving to water to surround the man’s head. He instantly let Olive go to swat the water away.
In his desperate attempt to get the water away he accidentally took in a deep breath and started to choke, dropping to his knees as Y/N pushed the water into his lungs. When the man stopped struggling Y/N closed, taking a deep breath as the water dropped to the ground, soaking a nearby Olive who was trying to warm up her arm.
“Sorry,” Y/N muttered, sliding her hands up and down Bronwyn's arms to warm the shivering girl up. Y/N surveyed the room, taking note of the shattered statue on the ground. The Twins and Claire came running up to her with an expectant look. That when she noticed that Enoch was missing.
“He went to go help Jake and Emma,” Horace said, coming over with Hugh and Fiona behind him. Y/N nodded, smiling down at Fiona when she walked over to her.
“This is yours,” Fiona held the necklace up to Y/N. Y/N took the necklace and quickly looped it around her neck, tucking it into the top of her dress. Footsteps came from the hallway, and everyone turned to see Enoch and Emma come out with a distraught Jake trailing behind them.
When Enoch caught sight of Y/N he quickened his pace, taking her into a tight hug that Bronwyn narrowly missed being smushed between them. Y/N hugged him back just as tightly, gripping onto the back of his jumper. Enoch pulled away from Y/N slightly, and the two of them looked at each other for a moment before Enoch was leaning down, pressing his lips to her in a chaste kiss.
The kids started giggling around them causing Y/N to smile into the kiss. Enoch pulled back with a pleased look on his face, his hand coming up to cradle her cheek, “I’m glad you’re okay.”
“Me too.”
Jake had ultimately decided to leave, wanting to stay in 2016 to see his grandfather again. Everyone said their goodbyes, and Y/N left herself for last.
“Are you really not coming with us?”
“I have to see my grandpa again,” Jake said, pulling Y/N into a tight hug. His eyes flickered to Enoch, who was waiting nearby for Y/N, “I’m glad you got over your crazy ex-girlfriend, even if that person is Enoch.”
Y/N laughed and hit Jake on the chest, “Enoch isn’t even mean.”
“Yeah, he’s not mean to you because he likes you.”
“Whatever,” Y/N mumbled, pulling away from Jake, “Bye Loser.”
“Bye Nerd.”
Y/N turned to the waiting Enoch, taking his outstretched hand as he led her through the loop. They got onto the boat, everyone preparing the boat to set sail. Once the boat was moving, Olive said that she would steer the boat first. With that the children ran off, looking for rooms to claim while they carried what little they got from the house.
The children were excited, Claire, Bronwyn and the Twins were running around the living quarters with Hugh, Millard, Horace and Fiona flowing at a slower pace. Y/N and Enoch were behind everyone else, walking hand in hand as they watched as room after room was claimed. Y/N went to look into the close by rooms, but Enoch tugged her down the hall to the rooms far from the others.
Enoch opened up room after room until they came across a room that had a double bed. He dragged Y/N in, closing the door behind them as he dropped his stuff off at the door. Y/N looked around the room, going to the bathroom that surprisingly had running water when she turned on the tap.
When Y/N came out of the room Enoch was sitting on the edge of the bed as he watched her, his leg bouncing.
“Was this a joke to you?”
“What do you mean?” Y/N took a seat next to Enoch, but he jumped up to pace in front of her.
“Us. Were you just playing along because you thought it was funny.”
“Enoch I don’t under-”
“I heard what Jake said,” Enoch sighed, running a hand through his hair, “He said ex-girlfriend, I heard him Y/N. I know what that means.”
“I don’t think you do,” Y/N got up, stopping in front of Enoch so he could look at her, but he stubbornly kept his head turned away, “I don’t know if you know what being bisexual means, but it means I like both men and women okay. And last I checked you fell into one of those categories.”
He finally turned his head, and Y/N’ heart sank at the unshed tears in his eyes. Y/N reached up, pulling him down to her to press her lip against his. Enoch kissed back desperately, pulling Y/N flush against him. Y/N looped her arms around his neck, letting her fingers tangled in his hair.
Enoch pulled back just enough to be able to talk, “I told myself not to fall for you, that it could only end badly. And when I heard Jake-”
“Shh, hey. I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere,” Y/N said. She pulled Enoch back in, pushing up on her tiptoes to deepen it. Enoch’s hands grabbed Y/N’s hips, and he pushed her back until she fell onto the bed. She stared up at him, shifting back towards the top of the bed as Enoch crawled over her. He settled above her, brushing away hair from her face as he admired her.
Y/N let out a content sigh, reaching up with grabby hands. Enoch dropped down next to her, pulling her into his arms. They fell asleep to the distant chattering of the children the other's heartbeat in their ears.

I'd actually like to know what your problems are with the show recently, as I sometimes feel the same way.
Oh man. Well, for me, it’s more like there’s a lot of smaller issues that compound and make things... less enjoyable than they would be otherwise.
(To clarify, I don’t hate the show - I still enjoy watching it, and actually like it quite a bit! But these issues have impacted how I feel about the show, and as a result I don’t feel as emotionally invested)
I’m going to avoid commenting on the issues people have discussed over racism and discrimination over body types, or conflicts in interpenetration due to the show not being clear enough in it’s narrative (Bismuth and Jasper, respectively) because I have a limited -if any- voice to talk about those issues, as I don’t fall into the directly impacted groups.
However, the issues that tend to get to me are the issues with the shows pacing (ranging from massive spaces of nothing really happening to squashed together events), the low-consequence narrative, the tendency to be overly episodic (episodes have a tendency to ‘reset’ to a generic beach city day and the events of previous episodes are irrelevant, which is not good for a series that is trying to tell a serial narrative), and the lack of singular, clear, stuck-to thematic core outside of ‘be nice!’ Which, while far from a bad message, is too simple to reflect the nuance the show tries to express. There isn’t any deeper meaning - it’s not a unintelligent show, but it doesn’t have as much subtle depth as I was expecting it to. In addition, the series structure of 11 min episodes (and refusing to do any sort of multi-episode story outside of Steven Bombs) leads to stories and events being rushed or ending poorly (I found the ending of ‘Alone at Sea’ seemed rushed and inconclusive).
I also have issues w/ some specific story decisions and ways that characters have been treated/changed over the course of the show. To be frank, it’s no where near as cool or interesting as I had hoped it would. I don’t want to name specifics too much, but... I don’t love everything that has happened to Peridot or how her story was written. It’s not horrible, but it’s far less interesting and emotional than it could have been.
Visual issues could be forgiven, if not for the aforementioned issues. The animation feels... too inconsistent, and it’s looked some what too me, as of late. Again, its not horrible but it isn’t exactly... helping.
And, to be honest, the worst thing I feel about the show right now is that... there isn’t a character I really, really love. They all feel rather one-dimensional and one-note. Yet they didn’t before! It’s like the series worked itself into a pit of ‘everything is fine!’ and all the characters lost the depth that made them interesting, and the story lost all momentum and tension.
I really, really do still love SU. It’s concept alone still often keeps me invested.
And I really, really, really want to continue this web comic (and yes, I was intending to structure it more like comic that uses the asks as a means of narrative, rather than just being a non-linear ask blog). I would feel horrible to just drop it now.
I still have all the work I’ve done so far that hasn’t been uploaded, and I do still plan to make it work. But the fact that my life has been... busy as of late (among other, more stressful things) compounded with my criticisms of the show growing has hampered my energy to work on this blog.
I’m not gone, though. This comic was always intended to delve into the characters in a way the show never could, albeit from my interpretation. Future Steven will be back one day, and you’ll get to see why Peridot is living in a shack, where Garnet is, and a whole bunch of other (hopefully) cool stuff.
Thanks for sticking around while I’ve been a stick in the mud.
#steven universe#su critical#cause yeah... this is pretty critical#fau#update#kinda?? i mean yeah sorta#i hope i didn't ramble to much in this#Anonymous

Fic: While you were away (Legends of Tomorrow; Rip/Sara)
Fandom: Legends of Tomorrow
Rating: PG
Pairing: Rip Hunter/Sara Lance (Time Canary)
Summary: “But seriously, Rip,” Sara starts up not two minutes later, and it doesn’t surprise him at all, “Just what did you get up to by yourself?” (Or Rip Hunter: Amateur Baker Extraordinaire)
Author’s Note: This isn’t really speculation fic for the finale, but more a scene that I want to happen, but know probably won’t happen, and so I just wrote it because this show and this ship and this team is currently ruining my life. There you go. Also, this starts off kinda angsty and turns super fluffy. Sorry.
Can also be read here on AO3
-----
“A whole year, stuck on board the Waverider as a miniature sized version of you, how’d that feel?”
He can tell she’s struggling to hold it in. The laughter. There’s the twist of her lips as she tries oh so very hard not to smile, likely imagining what he must have looked like. But it’s not working, her twinkling eyes give her away.
“The being stuck on the Waverider? Or being shrunk down to the size of a Borrower?”
Sara looks back at him confused.
He waves it away, “It’s an old British children’s television series, then film, circa 1990’s, never mind. Anyway. If the second, I was blissfully unware. If the first, torture.”
The smile vanishes instantly. A flicker of guilt crosses her face.
She joins him sitting there on the steps to his office, leaning back against the frame as he sits across from her.
He’s not sure what he’s doing here by himself. The rest of the team have disappeared, most likely to wash away the grime of their epic battle and collapse in a heap of exhaustion before the full reality of what they’ve managed to do hits them. But him? He guesses it’s a case of old habits die hard.
“I’m sorry,” she’s quick to apologise, “I didn’t think.”
“No, it’s quite alright,” he shrugs, “Don’t mind me, wallowing away. Seems Time and I don’t have an affinity for one another. You’d think I’d have learnt at least that by now.”
As always Sara seems to read his mind. He doesn’t know when he became so damn transparent.
“I guess it doesn’t help much that resetting reality didn’t erase our memories. Why is that again? Actually, you know what? Never mind. I never got the explanation the first time around.”
He looks up to find Sara staring at the bridge, eyes flickering from the central console to the captain’s chair to the window, not settling on anything in particular. His eyes though seem to be fascinated by the dusting of freckles on her cheek. He has every intention to look away but just can’t bring himself to do so.
A year. A whole year of thinking they were dead. That she was dead.
She turns back to face him, eyes colliding with his and he can do nothing to hide the fact he’s been staring.
She makes nothing of it, holds his gaze and waits.
He clears his throat and looks away, “I suppose it can’t be easy for you either, knowing you were playing loyal henchman to Laurel’s killer all that time.”
Her eyes close, face turning away, and his apology is just as immediate as hers, “Sorry.”
“It’s fine,” she breathes out, “You’re right. But then I remember his face when we won, when I got to stick that dagger in his chest and watch the lights turn out, and it’s not so bad.”
“Hmm, I imagine that must have been quite satisfying.”
And he should know.
“You would know.”
His head jerks up and he finds her lips have curved into a smile.
He shakes his head, “We make quite a pair, Miss Lance.”
She raises her brow and he hastens to clarify, “Of Captains.”
“Of course,” she smirks.
A comfortable silence descends amongst them then and a sense of peace seems to settle inside and it’s entirely unfamiliar but no less welcome.
“But seriously, Rip,” Sara starts up not two minutes later, and it doesn’t surprise him at all, “Just what did you get up to by yourself?”
Apart from the first few months of endlessly trying to send out a distress call, blocking out thoughts of them all being dead and it all being for naught, of walking around the Waverider in a haze of lack of sleep and food and reacquainting himself with his own shadow (he’d forgotten what his ship had looked like without the Legends on board), he can’t think of anything fun to reveal. She’s clearly angling for something light-hearted, and he can’t think of a thing, nothing worth sharing anyway-
“Oh bollocks,” he says suddenly, shooting upright and Sara looks equal part confused and amused. “Gideon?”
“Yes Captain?”
“Did you manage to clear away-”
“Your mess in the Waverider kitchen?” Gideon asks, and he can hear the sass, “I provide technical and logistical support, and when the occasion calls for it, clinical care. Domestic upkeep is not a part of my programming.”
“Of course it isn’t,” he mutters, before practically making a run for it, his coat flapping behind him.
Sara naturally follows, and he should have expected no less. He stops, spins around to tell her not to worry, he’ll deal with it, because he really doesn’t want her or any of them to get a glimpse at just how well he really coped without them, but of course, Time and their lack of accord, means he’s just moments too late.
It appears he underestimated his teams’ need for full stomachs over creature comforts.
“WOAH!”
“What the hell happened in here?”
Ray and Jax’s voices make their way to him and he turns the corner to find them standing there at the entrance to the kitchen, gaping aghast, as if an atomic bomb had gone off in there.
So maybe not so much an atomic bomb, but more like a flour bomb.
He rushes forward, pushing past them into the room, desperate to hide the evidence but he doesn’t know where to start.
Mick strolls in, bends at the waist to pick up an empty bottle of rum and shakes it from side side, “English, you been having a party without us?”
“I think I’m offended,” Martin remarks, taking in the carnage.
“Are those . . . cakes?” Sara asks, incredulous.
Ah yes. The cakes.
“I may have asked Gideon to pull up old archives of The Great British Bake Off and fancied I could do a better job than most of the contestants. And I also may have got a little too competitive and carried away . . .” he trails off sheepishly.
“So that’s what you did all this time?”
“No,” he’s quick to defend, “Not all this time.”
“Captain Hunter also spent a significant proportion of his time inebriated and unconscious,” Gideon chirps up helpfully.
“Yes. Thank you Gideon.”
He can feel Sara’s concerned eyes on him, which he pointedly ignores.
“Look, anyway. Just give me half an hour, and I’ll have this mess cleared up.”
“You made these?” Ray asks, stopping in front of one particular cake, topped with a model of the Millennium Falcon made entirely of fondant icing. He looks up at him with pure unadulterated joy, points at the cake and then back at himself, “Is this for me?”
“Uh,” is the only sound he manages to make, as his hand creeps up to clutch at the back of his neck.
Jax points at a cake adorned with various models of vintage cars and grins, “This is mine, right?”
“Um . . .”
“Where’s mine?” Mick asks, spilling the last drop of rum from one not-quite-empty-yet bottle he’s swiped off the floor.
Rip gives up all pretences, “I think you’ll have to forgive me, Mr Rory, but I didn’t bake you one for reasons I’m sure you can appreciate.”
Mick takes no offence, instead grabs at one of the half-demolished cakes and stuffs it in his mouth.
The rest of the team wait with bated breath.
Mick swallows, and stares back at him for a long moment and it’s impossible to tell what he’s thinking. He answers the teams’ unspoken question by reaching down for seconds, and shrugging, “Not bad.”
After that it’s an excited commotion of noise as the team hurries around him searching for cutlery and plates and stopping to take in the aftermath of his cake explosion.
The embarrassment of having the physical manifestations of just how much he missed them all on display fades, only to be taken over by something else. Something warm and gooey, settling in the pit of his stomach; something he hasn’t felt in a long time as he takes in the scene in front of him.
“Birds,” Sara says beside him then, and he doesn’t even realise where he’d stopped.
Down on the table in front of him, is one of his relatively simpler creations. A white single-tiered circular cake, decorated in tiny, intricately detailed and vividly colourful birds.
“You know, I would have expected you to go with red velvet and a dagger on the top.”
He huffs out a breath of laughter.
“This how you see me, Rip?” she asks, looking up at him.
He doesn’t answer her.
“It’s beautiful.”
“Yes. Well.” His cheeks stain with a blush.
Sara is thankfully merciful as she steps around him and points to another, “Now this must be yours!”
It’s a wibbly wobbly time mess of a cake. He’d thought it apt.
“Hey, Jax,” she calls out suddenly, “Pass me the candles.”
He knows he looks confused, “Sara, what are you doing?”
She ignores him, “Mick, lighter.”
He throws it across the room, and she catches it easily.
Jax hands her the candles, and she only needs the one as she sticks it into the top of his cake and lights it.
She looks up at him, “Make a wish, Captain.”
“It’s not my birthday.”
“No, but we need to celebrate. We reset reality. Amaya’s alive. Darhk and the Legion are dead and gone, but more importantly, we’re back together again. And we have cake. So I can’t think of a better excuse.”
“Why me?”
“Because,” she shrugs, which isn’t really an answer at all.
No, the answer is in her smile and the flicker of the flame reflecting in her eyes.
And so he does it.
Holds her gaze, makes a wish and three, two, one . . .
End.
