So I rewatched Thanks to Them yesterday and during the Tale of the Brother’s Wittebane scene, I had this hilarious metal image of Belos in Hunter’s body listening to the story and pointing out all the flaws like Team Avatar watching the Ember Island Players:

Not really. More like a comedic sum-up that manages to perfectly capture Belos' entire character and motivation.

No offense, but I don't think Belos's backstory is as tragic as some want it to be and the show kinda points that out and makes fun of him for it. “Sounds like big bro got a hot witch girlfriend and little bro got upset. But that's just me.” That's canon. I think the only sad / tragic part is him being an orphan alongside his brother.

Respectfully, I disagree. I made a post earlier that I’ll include below, but the basic idea of it is that Philip was still clearly a child when his brother abandoned him, leaving him with nobody in a town that is presumed to have dislike him if we’re continuing with the parallels between him and Luz. There’s some further evidence that he was left handed (utilizing his left hand to carry things, make gestures, and so everything but write), which was considered all but witchcraft and was acceptable to beat out of a child. The indication of Titan’s Blood being buried also suggests that Caleb and Evelyn knew where to get it and chose not to go back to Gravesfield, leaving Philip to continue being indoctrinated and fall back on his beliefs as a source of comfort and familiarity.

I would go on, but I don’t want to end up rambling for more than an hour.

Of course, it is perfectly acceptable to like a character as a black-and-white villain! It can be incredibly cathartic and comforting. I just don’t believe that Philip is one of them.

I wouldn’t put it past Dana but I don’t think so, personally. When I was Masha’s age, I said similar things when learning about history which is why I’m hesitant to say that their line was a take that to Belos fans.

Lore! Lore! Lore!

So the tale of the two brothers began in 1613 when they arrived in Gravesfield, orphans. 

A witch named Evelynn, huh!? I wonder who that reminds me off!!

Häxan Hia Hia from the comics and cartoons about Bamse, the world’s strongest bear, of course. She has a magic laugh and a mini-dragon as a pet.

We even have Flapjack held in this distinctive-looking hand… and also on fire?

And hey, what’s that about a secret code used to travel between worlds? Does it have anything to do with the rebus-map thing? I did wonder how exactly Evelynn,Caleb, and later on Philip traveled between the realms before Philip built the portal door. This could imply that there existed an earlier portal door that required a code to use and which might’ve been destroyed or lost.

Oh, and also, I gotta say that the production on this hay ride story is super impressive, especially considering that, if the establishing shot earlier was anything to go by, there’s like… at most fifty people here.

What I love about this summation is not just that it’s funny AND correct (seriously, between this and the reading they did in Yesterday’s Lie, maybe Masha really got some psychic powers after all), but it’s also a plausible explanation.

Think about it from an in-universe perspective: listen to the story, and remove the knowledge of magic and other dimensions. Add onto it the fact that historical tales are often exaggerated, misinterpreted, or has vital context missing, and what do you get? Two brothers, both raised in a paranoid, puritan environment. The older brother falls in love with a woman who is maybe out of town, maybe lives on her own, is maybe something of a mystic. The younger brother believes her to be a witch and things get ugly.

In other words: Big bro got a hot witch girlfriend and lil bro got upset. Perfectly plausible and most certainly far more possible as an explanation of an old story.

Oh, they know, don’t they? Or… I dunno, but Gus at the very least knows something from the memories he got from Philip. He and Willow shared a knowing look with each other when they saw the statues of the brothers Wittebane earlier. And now this moment with Amity. Maybe Amity saw that Gus got upset at the story and wants to comfort him… or he (and maybe Willow) talked with her without Luz & Hunter knowing, trying to piece together a puzzle they suspect Luz & Hunter already have the pieces for.

Anyways, aside from some clarification on the timeline, and the long-awaited namedrop of Wittebro’s Wittewife, there wasn’t a whole lot of information that I hadn’t already figured out on my own. But it was a nice summary for the kids in the back who are not listening as closely as I am, and again, I really liked the visuals. Good job, Masha and, uh... those two guys. Well done.

Sexuality headcanon: I personally headcanon them as either pansexual or panromantic asexual.

Favorite ship(s): Them and Vee! I really wish we could've seen more of them, like their time in camp together or during s3 (yes, I'll say it again: Screw your shortening disney!!!).

Brotp: Them and their friends from camp. Though, I am intrigued about a possible dynamic between them and Luz. I get a feeling they'd get along pretty well.

Notp: (Hope that doesn't sound mean) Any ship except them and Vee. Not because I consider them bad ships (aside from obvious ones aka ships that include adults), but because I simply can't see them with anyone other than her.

A random headcanon: They have sort of a beef with Jacob. Actually he has beef with them for "stealing" his job, they just enjoy messing with him.

General opinion: I like Masha. They are quite neat and honestly, I can tell why Vee would be crushing on them. Their s3 design is really cool and I prefer it over their s2 one. This is the first time the show has presented the idea that perhaps, Caleb and Evelyn were lovers, DIRECTLY to the majority of the audience. Again, most fans will not pay attention to the paintings in Hollow Mind, so they aren't going to know Caleb and Evelyn are lovers.

... and then later in Thanks to Them... they made Philip call Luz "Evelyn" and Hunter "Caleb"... My goodness, I'm sure this isnt intentional or anything!

3. Favorite Episode of Season 3

Watching and Dreaming

Oh man, I am still not over this episode! I still have chills over it. I firmly believe this will go down as one of the best finale episode in children’s media right up there along with Sozin’s Comet. It knew exactly when to make me laugh, when to make me cry, when to fill my heart with indescribable joy. So much love was put into this episode and it showed. It knew exactly which questions needed to be answered and which ones could be left to fan speculation. And the weirdos stuck together.

10. Favorite line from season 2?

Really whole show is full of great lines, but I love the absolute resignation and judgement in Raine’s voice when they realize that no matter how hard they try, Eda is going to get involved no matter what.

The line itself is kind of generic, but I am 100% convinced Camila knows Luz is dead at this point, and she is literally saying Luz is too stubborn to let death stop her.
