Aimed the Killshot at Himself

Summary: Inspired by a prompt by @aconstantstateofbladerunner - what could have been, if not for you - After Inko divorces him, Hisashi’s goes to the press to say All Might stole his wife and son.

Notes: So, uh, started poking around My Hero Academia. I haven't really heard good things about the canon stuff, especially its treatment of the female characters and issues with Tell not Show, but I have found a lot of fanworks I enjoyed!

He got the news after class.

"Hey, uh, Dekiru?" Ashido said, peering at her phone. They had all stopped calling him Deku after Bakugo's third assault on him got his parents called and his former fri- bully expelled and his actions in Aldera revealed to the class, mostly through Auntie Mitsuki's yelling. For a while, it had been awkward in class, especially around the Bakusquad, but things had gone back to normal with a new nickname for him. "Do you know a guy by the name of Midoriya Hisashi?"

Izuku looked up from his homework, where he was helping Shouto and Ochaco pick out a pre-Quirk hero to do their project for history class on. Tenya had already picked Joan of Arc. He hadn't heard the name in a while. Not since his mom and All Might started dating and she had to sit him down to explain the truth about her and his dad's relationship.

"Uh, yeah. He's my bio dad," he admitted, practically feeling Shouto's eyes go wide. He had been so certain about his bio-son theory, especially when his parents decided to tie the knot. "He moved to the United States when he and my mom divorced." Because he had been Quirkless.

It had been a tough pill to swallow, even though he hadn't seen the man since he was four.

"Well, uh...he's claiming that All Might stole your mom from him."

He blinked. He blinked again. The words stalled in his brain for a few seconds. Not even just the fact that he was in Japan again.

"What?!"

Ashido turned on the TV, flipping it until they reached a news channel. "-foreign market manager, Midoriya Hisashi, claims that the former Symbol of Peace, All Might, used his influence in order to send him on a twelve-year post in New York City in order to seduce his wife Midoriya Inko, now Hayashi-Yagi Inko-"

A slam on the table made him flinch, turning his head. "I refuse to believe that!" Ochaco bellowed, looking ready to bolt out and find Hisashi to fist-fight him. "Zuzu-san's mom would never do that!"

Shouto followed her, little flames puffing out as he hissed, his usual blank expression taken over by anger. "Inko-sama is the kindest, pure-hearted woman I have ever met," he said. "Her first concern is for Midoi." Tenya nodded furiously, his own face turning red, clearly too upset to even bother about a lecture about how heroes like All Might would never sink to that level.

"Aww," Izuku couldn't help the coo even as he pulled out his phone and typed in her number. "I'll tell her that you guys said that." He had to check on her. He knew she was probably fine, but she had received such nasty words when she and All Might came out.

"A lot of people agree with you guys too," Ashido said, scrolling on her phone. Next to her, Tsu and Jiro had pulled out their phones and were smiling at whatever they saw. "People are speaking up against the accusation, mostly for All Might-"

"But a lot of people love your mom, kero," Tsu said, her shoulders shaking. "There's even a tag trending called #DefendMsMight, kero,"

His phone picked up. "Izuku?" his mom said. Instead of tears like he almost expected, it sounded like she was laughing. "Izuku, did you see the news?"

"I did," he said, his heart slowing down. She wasn't hurt, she wasn't even upset. If his bio dad expected this to break her, he was wrong. "Tsu was telling me that a lot of people were defending you online."

"We love you, Inko-sama!" Shouto called.

That received a sniffle. "I love you guys too!" she called, probably crying at the affectionate title. Her voice suddenly sharpened in strange, bloodthirsty, glee. "But Hisashi's getting dragged everywhere and I love it."

"...like, now? Or before the lawyers get him?"

"Yes."

6. Do you have your work beta’d? How important is this to your process?

I usually do… usually………@polandspringz 👀 but when my beta reader is too busy working a full time job (the audacity) I rely on myself or a close friend. I’d say betaing is pretty important to me but recently I haven’t had anyone who can do it so I’ve been doing the heavy lifting of reading my own work once I finish.

13. what’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?

Do NOT edit while writing the first draft. Don’t. Just DON’T DO IT. KEEP GOING DON’T REREAD DON’T LOOK BACK JUST WRITE.

Also…*sighs* proofread. When you’re all done. Even if you have a beta reader, doing a read through is so important. I’ve done so much tightening up on fics from rereading it fully through. One thing that’s helped me when I’m really struggling with focus is I’ll have my document read to me. I have such a hard time starting the task of proofreading and one thing that’s made it easier is a text to speech add on to my browser. Lifesaver. It can’t help with everything but it does so much heavy lifting. Also I think knowing how your work would read for someone who is using text to speech is SUCH a huge thing. I’ve been using it so much more because of that too.

25. What fic do you wish you got more of a response on?

Definitely “to rise and return. again and again.” my post Heroes: Rising fic. I sometimes go back and forth on changing the summary thinking that maybe that’s why it didn’t get traction. But I think maybe it’s because part of the fic is writing a scene and dialogue from the movie? Not sure. I’m thankful for the love it has received! It was actually the very first mha wip I ever started so I’m proud that it’s finished. The response while smaller is still full of such love that I can’t be sad about it. I think there’s just always that part of you as a writer that wonders what went wrong with that one specific work that made it less appealing or liked than others.

32. Name three of your favorite fanfic writers.

Oh man to pick three. These are the three that come immediately because literally no matter what they write I will read: 

achievingelysium @queenangst, @spiritusrex, and @aconstantstateofbladerunner

achievingelsium I’m just in awe of them. They write so much. They’re power is unmatched. How do they think of so many ideas. Like I want to capture that inspiration. SpiritusRex is quality every single time and I love them for that. I think they were put on this earth to have my exact tastes. aconstantstateofbladerunner. What can I even say I would kill and destroy to be as good a writer as them.

37. How do you choose where to end a chapter?

This is still a skill I’m working at. I’ll admit I enjoy a good little cliffhanger! But if there’s no cliff to hang from I suppose I go with what feels natural for the progression of the story. Ending it at a point that feels just right so that the next chapter begins strongly as well is important to me. There’s been many times where I’ve been just ripping my hair out over where to end a chapter and even the line to end it one. That’s always the hardest for me. So often I want it to feel perfect.

53. How do you spend your time when it comes to fanfiction? Are you primarily a fic reader, writer, or a perfect 50/50 split of both?

I’d say I read more than I write. During the work week I’m often so brain dead once I get home that I have no strength to sit and write so I just lie in bed and read. Now that I’ve gotten a better footing with work though (first two years were ROUGH) I actually have time to do writing. This past October was the most I’ve written consequently since like 2017! In my heart I want to be a perfect 50/50 split because I love reading as much as I love writing. And there’s so many things I want to finish. But... life keeps happening... I wanted to write something over the winter holiday...and then I got punched with norovirus on Christmas Eve (actually still recovering from it) so all I’ve been capable of doing is reading fanfiction. This ask game is honestly a really nice ease back into thinking about writing which helps me quite a bit : )

71. When it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?

A separate doc is my best friend. For long narratives I NEED an outline and breakdown of each event. Especially when time is involved in the story. All my multi chapter fics have their own separate document. “Satiate” has one and is like 11 pages long with lots of me yelling at myself, keeping track of the quirk effects, making sure events make sense, and ensuring I’ve accounted for the little details.  

(also I accidentally read 72 instead of 71 so here’s an extra answer)

72. What order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?

There’s been quite a few fics that I’ve done my favorite scenes (“thicker than blood” and “safe on all sides”) but I also tend to do front to back. I may write a scene just to get it out when it comes to me (especially when I think of specific phrasing) but oftentimes I try to write mostly front to back in reading order. It just makes more sense for my brain. I’m very visual as I plan and super detail-oriented. I need to see the order of how things play out or I’ll get super hung up on it. So going in reading order is the way to go.

Over and Done With

An excerpt from All but One by @aconstantstateofbladerunner... aka the fic with the rawest non-villain version of All Might I've personally had the pleasure of reading so far.

All for One’s ugly mug gazed confidently out the mansion’s floor-to-ceiling window like the untouchable god he thought he was for far too long.  Then he turned around, and sealed his fate.  The greatest villain Japan had ever known’s skull was no tougher than the glass Toshinori burst through compared to the raw force of One for All. 

He went flying, but steadied himself mid-air with some quirk.  “S-so,” he hacked.  “You must be the new pe-“

Toshinori caught the monster’s chin with a right hook.  Then he grabbed with the left. 

He crushed the jaw until it was practically liquid, then yanked what was left clean off.  All for One screamed, raw and unfiltered. 

An energy pulse pushed Toshinori back.  Some lackeys tried to come at him.  Toshinori backhanded a windblast that imbedded them in the walls.

All for One attempted hover away down the hall.  Every piece of glass in the room shattered with the force of Toshinori’s leap.  He went for the neck.  The bastard under his bloodied hands hacked fire and bile.  Shapes and shadows of a quirk danced at the corners of Toshinori’s vision.  Another slam into the floor cut it off.  He grabbed his hair-

Curly.  Dark.  No!

He grabbed a handful of his hair and yanked it off before digging the same fist deeper into his brains.  The marble floor cratered.  A sudden electrical shock loosened Toshinori’s grip just enough for All for One to force-jump away.  But he didn’t get far.  Toshinori was on him before he could even stumble.  He slammed his heel into the beast’s back; his spine snapped like a twig.  Gurgled wails almost drowned out the satisfying sound.

The floor collapsed and they fell into a kitchen.  More lackeys.  More hurricane-force winds.

All for One managed to flip himself over somewhat in the meantime.  He hurled some sort of metal spine.  Toshinori slapped it to the side.  A flurry of smaller spikes was blown away with a snap of his fingers.  He leapt over a fissure in the ground like he was jumping a puddle.  And he landed on the bastard’s knees.

Then Toshinori paused.  Ice crept into his veins.  Here was the man whose existence tormented him almost all his life. 

Jawless. 

The orchestrator behind thousands upon thousands of torturous crimes against humanity.

Head deflated.

The man who murdered my mother.

One eye dangling from its socket.

But there, under his remaining eye, was something Toshinori hadn’t ever noticed in their encounters.  Few and faded, but undeniably there.  Freckles.

The father of the greatest light of my life…

Toshinori hit him harder.  What was left of a face disappeared behind two falling fists.  He pulled back.  The walls around them were starting to melt.  All for One dug his nails into Toshinori’s costume while his skin spasmed, desperately trying to activate the right quirk.  Displaced teeth poked out of a gurgling bloody mass.  He hit him again.  And again.  And again.

All for One stopped swinging his arms at some point.  Toshinori wasn’t falling for that again.  His heel plunged into the monster’s chest, squishing and crunching organs beneath.  He didn’t let up until he was sloshing in a puddle.  Even then, it wasn’t over until all was still. 

So he waited, hovering over what was only a corpse in theory.  Long enough that blood on his face that wasn’t his cooled and crusted.  It was over far before Toshinori accepted it.  He couldn’t accept it.  It happened too fast.  There was a whole strategy ready to go.  He was going to trick him.  Use One for All in one part of his body at a time like Izuku did.  But the bastard just wouldn’t move.  No way it would be that easy.

And yet…

The investigators had to scrape up what was left into a bin.

Wildest Izuku bashing I've ever had the misfortune to see was a fic that made it out that Izuku was stalking Bakugou their entire lives and that that completely justified Bakugou's abuse of him. Like I really can not comprehend how people can twist characters so badly.

That take is apparently common enough that it motivated AConstantStateOfBladerunner to write Cain.

I should warn you now that as part of being motivated by the above take, it deliberately exaggerates Bakugou's negative traits to the point of him basically being a horror antagonist

Your Deku vibe senses are accurate, I love Midoriya. I also love Toshinori, and Aizawa. I'm a found family liker, so like most of those bookmarks are probably Midoriya found family

and finally for BNHA how can i not rec literally anything by @aconstantstateofbladerunner but specifically Butterfly hgkhsdg. genuinely a must-read for this fandom imo it's got the most fucked up shit on earth and also dadmight what's not to love.... it's one of those stories that by the end has you staring at the wall going Oh I Will Never Be The Same Again which is the highest mark of success i think.

Now I'm reminded of the fanfic Dekugate, a MHA fanfic by @aconstantstateofbladerunner. In it, Izuku Midoriya, the bio-son of All Might and small-time rescue hero Inko Midoriya, discovers the titular conspiracy. And what is said conspiracy? Good old-fashioned RPF shipping between All Might and David Shield from the first movie. These people are so deluded that they think that the two have secretly been a couple for the last 2 decades, but the powers that be have forced them into heterosexual marriages because "straight sells". Despite the fact that both of them have been openly bi for just as long, with AM even having a bi-colored version of his suit. That Deku himself is just a prop and his accomplishments were all staged. The author even had a preview of JUST the chapter showing that part of the fanbase and the collective response was, "Thanks, I hate it". So, if you ever feel like giving yourself psychic damage and being sent to the stan culture ala Swifties and Minecraft Youtubers, give it a read. But the fic does also have genuinely sweet moments of Izuku with his family, and in the end, they learn to deal with the crazies together.
