i just finished a new piece!

its called "Lightkeeper" and is inspired by the people who tend lighthouses, sirens, and widows of people lost at sea. i really like the colors on this one :)

Keeper -- a short comic about an angel meeting a robotic lighthouse keeper that doesn't know the world has already ended. Made in about 18 hours for a 24-hour 24-page* black and white comic challenge (that I arrived late to, ha.)

*the actual submission does not include the cover, which was created after the fact for this post.

This was a really great learning experience as someone who's... never really made a completed comic. I ended up really attached to the story by the end of the project (possibly due to all-nighter deliriousness lol) and ultimately am very proud of what I made.There are some things I'd still like to change, particularly text placement, but in keeping with the spirit of the challenge I've elected to leave it as is.

In the midst of a supernatural storm, Simon is gifted something from the ocean he never thought would exist; someone for him to love

Warnings: plus size reader, injuries, storms, nudity (her top half), blood, fluff? WC: 920 Minors DNI

The storm was strange; winds howling in far too human of a manner, lightning striking the dark ocean too brightly, the waves crashing against the lighthouse too loudly. Simon was unsettled to say the least, not that he would even admit it to himself. The solid brick of the hundred year old building trembled with the force of the elements, making his dark eyes flicker across the mortar as if to assure himself that it remained solid despite the violence outside.

The tea he had poured himself was now stone cold yet he made no move to reheat the kettle, he just sat in the lumpy recliner, watching the skies grow darker as night closed in around the isolated island. He knew that he should go check on the beacon above his head, maybe slip into bed for a restless sleep but Simon remained still, something deep inside of him telling him that he had to wait. For what, there was no way he could know but still, he waited.

Exhaustion pricked at the back of his skull, making him grunt and readjust his bulky body. The springs of the chair creaked beneath his weight, obscuring the sounds of the storm for just a moment but as Simon let his head roll back against the frayed fabric of the headrest, a new noise broke through the din.

A heavy thud followed by the groaning of rotting wood had Simon frozen in place. In a break of the screaming wind, a voice  from the darkness outside had him out of his seat and into the storm in a matter of seconds. Thick droplets of rain and salt water pelted his face, obscuring his vision but just beyond his line of sight, where he knew the ancient dock lay, something was laying half on the wood and half still trapped in the tumultuous water. The figure moved, letting out another distressed sound as they struggled against the harsh elements.

He thundered down the lighthouse steps, uncaring of the water that was quickly soaking through his knitted jumper. Who knows how long they had been in the icy water or where they had even come from— time was essential if he wanted them to have a chance. His heart skipped a beat as he drew closer; it was a woman and a half-naked one at that. The expanse of her curves would have hypnotised him under any other circumstance but now, it only struck a chord of fear in his cold heart. 

Her hands scrambled against the wood as she struggled to pick herself up. “Hey!” His voice boomed across the space between them, startling her so bad that she released her hold and started to slip back into the sea. Simon didn’t even have time to curse himself for being so reckless before he dove onto the dock, knocking the air from his lungs, and grabbing her hand before she could submerge completely. 

“Hold on.” He grunted and yanked her up until she was mostly out of the water once more, her wide hips resting on the edge of the platform. He fell back onto his ass, desperately sucking air into his lungs before he spoke with a deep rasp.  “You right? Where in the hell did you… come… from…” His voice trailed off as another bolt of lightning illuminated the sky, reflecting off her soaked skin and—

Her tail.

Scales encircled her hips and plump stomach, getting denser as his eyes trailed down lower until they reached the thick bulk of a long tail where her legs should have been. Netting wrapped tightly around its length, slicing into her flesh between the delicate scales. He could see the heft of the fishing net trailing behind her, the weights on the end of it adding to her struggle. A mermaid had landed on his doorstep and she was by far the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his sorry life. 

She sat up and Simon quickly forced his gaze back up to her face, she definitely was half-naked. Her big e/c eyes stared up at him but he could see no fear in their depths. She tried to pull herself up the dock further but immediately collapsed, crying out as the splintered wood cut into her bare skin. Simon moved without thinking, big hands grabbing the soft chub of her arms and pulling her into his own. She fell into him easily, far too trusting for a man who had done nothing to earn it.

“Help me.” And with that, she slumped into him, completely passed out, leaving Simon’s mind reeling with what had happened. He gripped her tighter and finished pulling her from the water just as the rain began to slow, finally exposing the extent of her injuries. Her soft body was bruised and battered, cuts covering her arms like she had fought something off. 

“Bloody hell.” He muttered before holding her even tighter to his broad chest and standing up. He adjusted her so she laid across his arms bridal style, her tail now dragging on the ground. The walk back to the lighthouse would be long with her dead weight but he found himself not caring about the inevitable strain in his back as her nose fell to the crook of his neck, letting out a happy sound as his warmth seeped into her. “Shoulda known only this shit would happen to me.” His grumble held no bite and he started his journey back home.
