Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

In these verses Jesus describes our function as God’s people. In one word it is influence. When we live according to God’s word, we will have a profound influence on the world we live in.

Wherever there is light, darkness is dispelled.  In your corner of the world, you will be a ray of hope to those around you. People will know that the God you worship is truly amazing, just by looking at the way you live. 

Therefore reach out to those who are hurting and sad, those who are hopeless and destitute. Ignite a ray of hope in them. Give them a reason to smile.

Matthew 5:13-16 (ESV). [13] “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. [14] “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

“What statement is your life making? Jesus said that to the watching world, believers should be like salt and light. If we add salt to soup, the improved taste is obvious, and when we bring light into a room, darkness flees. Our character, conduct, and conversation should make a statement about the importance of God, the necessity of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

To lead a life of significance that brings glory to the Lord, believers must begin by reading and studying the Scriptures. As we meditate on God’s Word, He reveals Himself and we gradually absorb His principles, which begin to show in our daily living.

One good way to learn Scripture’s lessons is by researching the lives of great saints like Abraham, Moses, Daniel, Ruth, David, Esther, Mary, and Paul. Their stories have much to teach us about the way they coped, what they discovered from mistakes, and how they interacted with the Lord.

From these biblical accounts as well as other passages, we learn that our heavenly Father has a goal for our life. He desires to conform us to the image of His Son. Recognizing this, we can cooperate and become beacons guiding others to Christ, as the apostle Paul did: “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).”

John 8:12 (NLT) Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

Flowers and vegetation needs the sun to live; that is their source of life and energy. Yes, they do not only live off of light, but without light they cannot show their beauty. Darkness prevents them from displaying their splendor and attributes. Even at night you need a lantern or the light of the moon to be able to admire them.

Jesus' light shines upon our lives when we decide to follow him. He will shine when our light is dimming out so we won't stop displaying who we are in him. Our beauty, atributes, and charisma. His light will show us the way when you don't know where to go. It will always point to the direction of life when we get lost. Even if darkness surrounds us, his light will never die. Because of him, we will become a lighthouse for those lost in high seas.

Be the light to others!

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Let it

“Salt of the earth”

“Light of the world”

Both come from today’s Gospel. Both get used by countless people in countless ways.

But the point that Jesus is making with both of them? It’s something that goes to the very heart of our most fundamental relationship, our relationship with God.

It’s that our relationship with God isn’t just about us. Though our intimate connection with God is at the heart of it, that intimacy isn’t all of it.

That is, when we have living faith, a faith that flows from a healthy relationship with the God who loves us unconditionally, it’s going to overflow.

The love that’s the very heart of that relationship, and the joy that flows from it, are going to spill out in every area of our lives. And it’s going to have an impact on everyone around us.

If you’ve ever been around someone who is truly holy, then you’ve felt that impact. You’ve found yourself happier, more at peace, just from having spent time with them. 

The point Jesus is making is that this is supposed to happen.

When God fills us with His love, His joy, His peace? That when it gets to the point that it overflows, we should let it. We shouldn’t even try to hold it back.

Note that God isn’t looking for us to make grand pronouncements or produce theological statements. Today’s Gospel makes it clear that God is looking for something much deeper.

God is looking for a change in our character. A change in who we are because of our relationship with God.

A change that impacts every part of us, both in the big moments and the everyday ones. A change that cannot be contained, that alters even our smallest interactions. With God and with everyone we meet.

Our faith should impact others, because it’s had an impact on us.
