My Photography Editing Process

Every photographer has their own editing process. It takes time to figure out your editing process, but once you figure it out, you’ll be a pro when it comes to editing your photos.

We’re going to give you an inside look at how we edit our photos. To be honest, editing photos is one of our favorite parts of the process. There is something about going through the photos, making the edits, and finalizing the end results that make us so happy.

The first thing we need to discuss is where you should edit your photos. There are a variety of programs out there that can help you achieve your editing goals. We personally prefer {and recommend!} Lightroom. Lightroom has been a favorite of ours since we first began to dabble in photography. That was long ago.. we actually had to buy the software in a CD format and install it on our computer. Now, we subscribe via Adobe. We are subscribed to the Photography Plan where we have access to Lightroom and Photoshop - which are both handy as a photographer!

Without further ado, here is the breakdown of our editing process:

We upload the images to Lightroom

We choose which images we want to edit

Image by image, we apply our editing style, remove spots, straighten/crop and all the little things you wouldn’t think of

Once we’re done editing, we export our images

From there, we take another look at our edited images, pick the best of the best, and send the gallery to our clients.

A big part of the editing process is inserting your editing style. This does take time to figure out as there are so many editing styles you can create for yourself. Trust us, we’ve gone through many editing styles thinking that was “the one.” Of course, over time your style will change. There’s no doubt about that. Our current style is light + airy with a hint of moody mixed in. We love those moody earthy tones, but also the light + airy, so we’ve created our own mixture that we hope is unique to us! Your style will draw clients in. Research the styles that draw you in and create your style! Once you have created your style and use the edit within Lightroom, you can save that style as a preset. This is a lifesaver. Once we created our current style, we saved it as a preset and use it as a base for whenever we edit photos. Depending on lighting, location and other factors, you will have to adjust the settings of your preset to match your editing style. Presets save you time during the editing process - which we all know is a huge chunk of time.

heyy i love your posts! how do you take your pics (what camera/phone is it) and how do you edit them?

:(( thank you!!!!! that means a lot. long post ahead!  my equipment isn't very fancy! i just use my ipad about 3/4ths (the 9.7 inch, and i have to try not to have my hands shake when i take a picture....) of the time, but if i want the picture to turn out a little clearer, i use a nikon d3400. but i've been taking photos on very cheap phones for a long time (everything from this phone brand called a cherry mobile to a samsung note 3), and as long as the lens is decent and doesnt take pixelated or sharp colors, i think the most important thing you can do to take good pictures is to use natural light. i always take my pictures near the window; artificial lighting makes the colors washed out and kind of muddy (very gray or much too yellow), while sunlight makes your pictures bright and vivid and airy, or moody and thoughtful, depending on how you capture the light that comes through the window. for editing-- i used vsco a lot, especially when i was just starting out with photography and studyblr, and i like to use the a6 and m5 presets, but i reduce the intensity of the effects so that the photo doesnt look washed out or overprocessed. but recently, i've been playing with lightroom mobile and making my own presets based on where i usually take my photos/how i usually edit. if you're interested in lightroom editing, ashley from bestdressed has a great introduction on how it works, and how to quickly edit photos. this is actually what got me into lightroom mobile!!! i also love theseoulsearch, who gives tips on lightroom editing and self-portraits, and i also learned a lot from this video. it's honestly hard to take good photos, and it may take a while to learn what editing you prefer, and how to set up a shot (god knows i'm still learning, and often super burnt out about it), but the beauty and fun is in the process. wishing you all the luck!!!
