So long as they say “discover,” they imply that whites are the only people who really matter. So long as they simply celebrate Columbus, rather than teach both sides of his exploit, they encourage us to identify with white Western exploitation rather than study it.

“Emotion is the glue that causes history to stick.” ✨ I’ll never forget the first day of my AP US History class when my teacher declared “History isn’t good or bad. It just is. It happened, so there’s no need for any of us to debate it.” I remember even as a 16 year old, that sentiment didn’t sit right with me. Our teacher, a well meaning white woman, was taking away the inherent emotion of history, as well as the fact that it’s not always past tense. It didn’t “just happen”. A lot of it is still happening today. The ramifications of our nation’s history are felt in every single interaction we have. This book brought back so many visceral memories, forced me to tackle ingrained racism in my own life and thoughts, and question where some of those habits might have started.
