All the money in #Arizona cannot buy authentic culture in #Scottsdale #Arizona yet dozens of real native communities survive and exist alongside this colonial embarrassment of an outpost that still caricaturizes and commoditizes real existing indigenous cultures and peoples. It reminds me of how the National Park Service had no qualms forcing Havasupai out of their Settlements in Grand Canyon Village, the ORIGINAL Stewards, but exhibited the uncanny desire to see the Grand Canyon as pristine untouched wilderness that needed to be saved...but saw no value in fighting for, protecting and preserving a culture that has thrived in the Grand Canyon probably for at least 1,000 years!? I became a Canadian citizen today, nineteen years after I left my home-country, fourteen years since I first landed in Canada 😭 I actually cried during my oath (which I really wasn't expecting, but I guess this all makes sense). During the ceremony, the judge spoke at length about it being Indigenous History Month, explicitly naming the historic and ongoing violence towards Indigenous peoples of these lands, inviting us as soon-to-be citizens to think through the question of reconciliation with regards to the privilege of living on these territories. The judge also spoke about it being Pride month, which also struck a meaningful chord. As my first act as a Canadian citizen, I want to publicly recant the first 25 words of my citizenship oath. I disavow the words that ask me to "be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Her Successors." In doing so, I hope to honour the resistance of my ancestors and my family, as well as my own convictions and values. This is an iPhone composition taken with an #iphonesegen3 of a culvert nestled between cookie-cut stucco HOA communities by #RedMountain and it heads off into the distance towards the #SuperstitionMountainWilderness like a #vanishingpoint. Yes, I've got nice cameras but I'm back to square one taking shots with a few iPhones too between short rideshare driving breaks... I returned this phone though and opted for the iPhone 13 Mini instead and transferred the image over to my 14 Max Pro for this artistic edit. . Taking photos wherever I'm at with any given time no matter how busy I get is paramount for getting back in my original groove. I've always been fascinated with #iPhonography and I didn't allow #Instagram to completely murder that vibe. I've always been on the hunt for a perfect #tinttype old time look for my digital images and the iPhone allows me to get back to basics.
