The Fine Arts Library recently acquired Ronald Keller’s artist’s book, in which he responds to Andrea Palladio’s Four Books on Architecture (1570).
The focal point of Keller’s work is a paper cast of the Villa Rotunda in Vicenza, Italy, which is theatrically hidden behind the excerpt from Palladio. Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi’s adaptation of Palladio’s Four Books, part of the historic Fogg Collection at FAL, is also exhibited.
These two books are paired not only to highlight Palladio’s importance to artists and architects over the last four hundred years, but to also highlight the connections between FAL’s historic collections and new acquisitions. The exhibit is up through September 11th.
Excerpts from the Four books on architecture Quattro libri dell'architettura. 1o libro. English. Selections Andrea Palladio ; translated by Robert Tavernor & Richard Schofield. Palladio, Andrea, 1508-1580. Cover title: Palladio Bremen, Maine ; New York City : Red Angel Press, 2008. [6], 14. [2] pages (last leaf folded) : illustrations ; 27 x 43 cm

Bertotti Scamozzi, Ottavio, 1719-1790. Fabbriche e i disegni. 2. ed. Vicenza : G. Rossi, 1786. 4 v. : ill. ; 43 cm. Italian

We are excited about the #animatedarchive challenge this month! Today’s GIF contribution is in honor of our new and current exhibit: Artistic Printing in the Nineteenth Century: Graphic Design before Graphic Designers curated by Loyola printmaking professor Bill Kitchens. This gorgeous exhibit displays Kitchens’ vast collection 19th century trade show cards and discusses the history of letterpress and lithographic printmaking in early American graphic design. We are thrilled to host this collection of colorful cards, books, and printmaking apparatuses in our Booth-Bricker Reading Room through the Fall 2018 semester. Come see it for yourself during our open hours: T-Th, 9-12 and 1-4pm.

This is the last week to see the exhibition *Life During Wartime: Penn at Home and Abroad During the Great War* before it comes down on August 3rd. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the armistice ending the hostilities of World War I, this show explores the varied experiences, both positive and negative, of University of Pennsylvania students, faculty and alumni during the years of the war. The gallery, located on the first floor of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library, is open during library hours. I just installed a small exhibit on custom enclosures for special collections materials. It showcases some of the boxes we make here in the lab. It’s on display on the first floor of the main library. - Bexx #conservation #libraryconservation #libraryexhibit #boxmaking #customenclosure #deathmask #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram (at MSU Libraries)

The current exhibit at the Fine Arts Library features a sample of images of Ottoman sultans, from the 16thcentury to the 19thcentury, as depicted by both Western European and Ottoman artists, in media ranging from woodcuts to engravings, oil paintings, lithographs, and albumen photographs, to facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts, held by the Fine Arts Library’s collections. These images show the variety of ways in which rulers of the Ottoman Empire, a powerful state that straddled three continents—Southeastern Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa—were represented by local artists, by foreign visitors, and by those who had never set foot in the Ottoman domains. Picturing the Sultan is open through December 20th. The exhibit is open to the Harvard ID holders.
