We are very pleased to present the virtual exhibition of six design bindings by six remarkably talented binders, each a response to Megan Rosenbloom's, Dark Archives: A Librarian’s Investigation into the Science and History of Books Bound in Human Skin. Timed to celebrate the release of the trade paperback edition, proceeds will be benefitting a BIPOC-focused scholarship program at the Guild of Book Workers. The books will be making their physical public debut in November at the Mütter Museum. … The bindings were created by Gabby Cooksey, Sam Feinstein, Erin Fletcher, Dominic Riley, Rebecca Staley, and Colin Urbina. This has been a terrible year for many people so we thought giving away a book might make it a little better for at least one person. This is a Scottish Wheel binding I recently completed, I’ve always wanted to do one. The text is Picturesque Antiquities of Scotland – Parts Two and Three (London: Printed for the Author, 1793) we posted about the text back on September 27th as it is a little unusual. The recto of each leaf was printed with letterpress and also illustrated with an etching. The book might be a little late in date as the Scottish Wheel design started to go out of fashion in the 1770s, but it seemed like the perfect content for this kind of binding. In keeping with the Scottishness of the book the leather was made by @jhewitsons – the leading manufacturers of leather in Scotland, if not the world (in business for more than 200 years), while the Dutch gilt or brocade paper pastedowns came from @vintage_paper_co_uk - located in Orkney, Scotland.
