"As human beings, are we meant to develop as individuals serving only our own needs or also serving the needs of others? Do we aspire to develop as critically thinking, creative, innovative, humane people, or do we just want to think of ourselves as members of a specific nation and culture? Freedom allows choice and liberal education advocates for a specific choice: that the purpose of freedom is to enable creative, critically thinking, caring individuals to build healthy societies that serve universal (not just parochial) ends." Gregory S. Prince, Jr. Took a walk to and through the university this morning, primarily to post invitations to participate in a study, but also to explore and reminisce on times around 10 and 25 years ago (I first attended the university back in '96)... #university #school #learn #learning #education #liberaleducation #student #alumnus #perspective #phototour #community #society #beinghuman #selfportrait #briskwalk (at University of Lethbridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CodGM_gyNTz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Because of the times we live in, all of us, young and old, do not spend enough time and effort thinking about the meaning of life. We do not look inside ourselves enough to understand our strengths and weaknesses, and we do not look around enough - at the world, in history - to ask the deepest and broadest questions. The solution surely is that, even now, we could all use a little bit more of a liberal education.”

Anominity
In a world where communication is instantaneous and we (as a society) pride ourselves in transparency, how is it that we all feel the need to hide ourselves behind screens and monitors? I haven’t decided if it is some natural mutation of social insecurity, or an adaption to normative human behavior. I am also guilty of the same thing. We all need outlets where no one will judge us; where no one knows us; where we can be what we want to be. All of this comes with a complex ... does it not? Why can’t we find a day-to-day balance of who we are; who we want to be; and expected realities of ourselves? We live in a judgmental world. That is a default setting of God ... an in inescapable natural sin. And perhaps that is my moral complex. The part I play in this life and the part I want to play. For the first time I understand the frustration with “labels”. Though I do believe in an understanding of boundaries. We need boundaries to better understand life. If merely to use it as a guidelines. Too much grey or in-between can be bad when you are trying to understand ethics and social morality. Maybe I’m just “going through a phase,” but I think not. Love and life have a weird way of finding you and (either) redefining or defining values in your life. It hurts. It’s ecstasy. It defines life. It’s a total mind fuck. Either way, life is beautiful. It can just be a wreck sometimes.

It’s everywhere. 🖤🤎💛🤍❤️ #Repost @foodsciencebabe ・・・ “What does racism have to do with food? I was asked this question a lot this past week. Please learn the history. This is just a quick summary. It leaves out so many details. Swipe through the slides and read the references below. That’s just a start. You’ll typically never hear me tell you to google something, but google is your friend in this case. Please use it if you aren’t aware of the history of structural racism in the US and how it has shaped our agricultural landscape. In the eighteenth century, the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus established four taxonomic “varieties” of the human species in his book Systema Naturae, describing each variety by “culture and place.” The Americanus was “stubborn” and the Europeanus“inventive,” while the Asiaticus was “haughty” and the Africanus“crafty, sly, careless.” He later added a fifth variety, Monstrosus.
Classifications like these led to a hierarchy of human value that, over the centuries, has been expressed in policies, attitudes, and laws—from slavery to segregation, racism, racial inequity, and prejudice—that have left people emotionally wounded. Even well before Linnaeus, indigenous peoples in the “New World” were disrespected and dehumanized when their lands were colonized and confiscated by Old World invaders.
