New Fiction 2024 - March

Dark Disciple by Christie Golden (2015)

I couldn't binge SW without going to the library like the old days to grab one of the recent EU novels. This one continues the Asajj Ventress arc that was cut from the final Clone Wars seasons, and I'm ambivalent about the course of events. But it looks like I chose the perfect time to read it because the final season of The Bad Batch will address things that annoyed me about the ending.

Cathedral by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels (2002)

It was feeling a bit shaky in the previous novel (This Gray Spirit) with a lot of time spent on less interesting nuance, but this novel saves this short series by trimming off the expositional fat and keeping up the pace. The cliffhanger ending was fantastic and I've been jittery waiting until I can move on to the next one.

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville (1851)

Herman, pal, I know what you were going for with the middle 2/3 of this book, but that really should've been a standalone expansion. Tolkien (or maybe his editors) knew to leave that to its own thing. In any case, WHAT A BOOK. How is this from the mid-1800s? Great beginning, great ending, interesting middle for those who can get through the instructional texts on whales and whaling.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor dev. Respawn Entertainment (2023)

I miss some of the more alien environments from the first game. They definitely borrowed spaghetti western cues from Mandalorian for this, and you see below how much I gripe about that show's influence. Cal's still kind of a dud. But it's great overall. What a fun, huge, expensive-looking game. How does any SW developer going forward beat this?!

Drive-Away Dolls dir. Ethan Coen (2024)

It's reaching out toward those 90s crime comedies the Coens had going, but just kinda falls short. I can't put a finger on what exactly is missing. Maybe it doesn't go far enough?

Madame Web dir. S.J. Clarkson (2024)

One of those laugh-at-the-dialogue-that-isn't-meant-to-be-funny affairs.

Perfect Days dir. Wim Wenders (2024)

I've over the moon for this movie. Just perfect in every way. I felt it in my bones, watched it ten times at theaters all over the area as I chased down showtimes, and I'll gladly watch it again.

The Peasants dir. DK Welchman & Hugh Welchman (2024)

Holy crap, I missed Loving Vincent but this makes me wanna go and check that out, because this animation technique is gorgeous. All of the performances were great, too.

Stopmotion dir. Robert Morgan (2024)

Stopmotion, puppets, horror, madness. It's a perfect combination.

The Taste of Things dir. Tran Anh Hung (2024)

I haven't seen food shot this beautifully since Food Wars.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training dir. Haruo Sotozaki (2024)

Never watched an episode before and I can say that was a helluva fight.

Maestro dir. Bradley Cooper (2023)

Man, I mean, he did it, he sure damn did it, but should he have?

Land of Bad dir. William Eubank (2024)

When the shit hits the fan.

Imaginary dir. Jeff Wadlow (2024)

I was in from the get-go, but it did need a certain something. Maybe 25% more creepy toys.

Love Lies Bleeding dir. Rose Glass (2024)

You'll think you know where it's going but it does not go there.

The American Society of Magical Negroes dir. Kobi Libii (2024)

Justice Smith and An-Li Bogan did amazing work in The American Society of Magical Negroes. Everyone in the cast and crew, really, but they portrayed a lot of complicated feelings and fears with aplomb and also had a really sweet romantic scene that got to me like no romantic scene in recent memory. I fell for Bogan’s character just like Smith’s character did. (And they respond to that by the end.)

Scheming and plotting to convince my higher-ups to cast Zar Amir Ebrahimi in any of our projects because I just wanna see her cast in more stuff.

One Life dir. James Hawes (2023)

They needed more insanity and a higher frequency of it.

Immaculate dir. Michael Mohan (2024)

Whoa BUDDY, props to Sweeney for going for it in the end.

Exhuma dir. Jang Jae Hyun (2024)

I feel like I'm missing a critical cultural understanding here to get past my tepid response.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 dir. Rhys Frake-Waterfield (2024)

I didn't need to do this again.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dir. Adam Wingard (2024)

Closing in on minimal humans and maximum giant monsters.

The Bad Batch - Season 2 (2023)

Yep, nailed it. They have great character moments here and it continues the tradition of "oh the clones are more interesting than most everyone else."

Andor (2022)

First half is two thumbs up, second half is one shaky thumb up. Big Mandalorian vibes with the whole return from whence you came narrative arc. I'd like to see them break away from Favreau's influence (I unfairly pin the live action ups and downs on him).

The Mandalorian - Season 3 (2023)

It's getting weird with the father figure thing. And it's befuddling when one has to catch a different show to understand key beats in Mandalorian and Grogu's story. Hype status for more seasons is low.

Ahsoka (2023)

The get-togethers are fun, but it meanders a bit and the ending was a headscratcher. Great combat and Star Wars-iness though. I'd come back for more with a hopeful glint in my eye.

Star Wars Resistance (2018-2020)

They could've had something good here, but they really whiffed most of season 1. It starts to get good at the end of s1 and maybe through half of s2, but then they seemed to tie things up hastily when they knew they were getting cancelled. Can't recommend. :(

Tales of the Jedi (2022)

Anthology Star Wars?! Anthology Star Wars!! They make me care about characters from the movies that meant nothing to me, as is Filoni and co's way.

Star Wars: Visions (2021-2023)

MORE anthology Star Wars?!! And "Screecher's Reach" in the second season kinda wrecked me. Just typing this out makes me think of it again and the tears well. It's from the Secret of Kells studio and it's just a phenomenal short. Both anthology shows are must-watch.

The Outer Limits - Volume 2 (1964)

I'm surprised how little of this first season carries through to the 90s revival that I love so much.

The Tomioka Family

Summary: A spy, an assassin, and two kids with telepathy live together under the same roof. With the fate of the country on their hands, what could possibly go wrong?

Disclaimer: Demon Slayer is written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. The manga is published by Viz Media (English) and the anime is written by Ufotable.

A/N:

I decided to write this since Shinobu and Yor share the same VA. I'm going to try to include some elements from Spy x family but it will be different in it's own way. I hope that yall enjoy!

This is also my first time writing for this fandom so be aware that the characters might be OOC.

Meet Giyuu Tomioka (age: unknown), code name Null, a man with multiple fake backgrounds and a top spy for the Hashira Organization, a secret organization to protect the country from enemy spies in Japan. A man with an unknown past, Giyuu is cold, quiet, and efficient at his job. He can do any missions the Hashira Organization throws at him.

Until the mission required him to have a child.

Giyuu's mission was to infiltrate the Kimetsu no Yaiba (KNY) Academy, a top private school in the country.

Meet Tanjiro (formally known as Test Subject #019), and Nezuko (formally known as Test Subject #006). They are siblings and orphans. Tanjiro is the oldest at age 13, and Nezuko is the youngest at age 10. Their backgrounds are unknown, but Tanjiro mentioned that their parents died when they were very young. Both were a part of a secret experiment called Experiment: Sun, the purpose and the organization is still unknown. The siblings lived at an orphanage after escaping the organization for five years until Giyuu came along. Nezuko is a telepath who can read minds but is mute (reason: unknown). Tanjiro is also, but his power is limited to only his sister's mind. He is not silent, so he can speak for his sister. (Giyuu assumed it was from their sibling bond).

Tanjiro was the perfect child to attend the school. However, he refused to leave the orphanage unless he and his sister were adopted.

And so, after months of studying, Tanjiro was able to pass the entrance exam to the KNY Academy. However, the Tomioka family ran into another problem.

Now they needed a mom for the interview portion.

Meet Shinobu Kocho (age: 27), aka Purple Butterfly. Shinobu worked at the City Hall in the mornings and as an assassin for Garden (led by Tamayo) at night. She took up the assassin job to help out her sister, Kanae, with the expenses. She started using the money for herself after her sister got a job at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and married Sanemi Shinazugawa. Shinobu thought that she would live alone until she had lied to her co-worker, Mitsuri, that she had a boyfriend. Mitsuri, excited by the news, wanted to meet him at her boyfriend, Obanai's birthday party.

Now Shinobu needed to find a man to act as her boyfriend fast.

Three worlds will soon collide to form an ordinary family. What will happen next? Will secrets be spilled? Will someone find out about their ruse? Find out next time when Giyuu and Shinobu meet.

Severus Snape x Demon Slayer! Slytherin! Muggle-born! Reader

A Wizard's confession and meeting Kanao 🦋.

Introduction: After hearing, the conversation between Y/n and Andrea. Severus thought about confessing his feelings to Y/n. But will she ever forgive him and give him a second chance despite what he did to her back in her third year and at his final year? And of course what will happened when they came across a little girl who seemed to experience the same thing as Severus did?

A/n: This is a sequel to A Demon Slayer's Broken Soul. Y/n is 17 and Severus is 22. I only Y/n L/n and Andrea Darlington. By the way, I'll be using the lines from the English dub of Demon Slayer, since I prefer the dub version over the sub.

Severus keeps watching Y/n during the feast inside the Great Hall while eating. He needs to do something. It has been 2 months after Lily's death in the hands of his former master. He was saddened by her death, however he doesn't know what upsets him the most. Whether was Lily's death or Y/n leaving once she finishes school?

To be quite, fair it was the Slytherin girl leaving once she finishes school. After their break up, he realized that he loved Y/n and not Lily. She needs to know how he truly felt for her.

However, how is going to do that with Andrea preventing him from talking to the Slytherin girl? He needs to wait for the right moment.

2 months later...

It's Christmas eve, so that means no one is around but a few students stay in the holidays. He has no dunderhead students to deal with. He of course couldn't leave Hogwarts. He then thought about heading to the Slytherin common room to see if Y/n was there. He then made his way towards the common room. To his luck, the said girl was there reading a book while sitting on the couch.

Severus then made his way towards her. Nervousness fill in his gut. He then carefully stood behind her. “Hello, Y/n.” he greets the girl gently. That startled the young Slytherin teenager only to be met by her former senior. She then immediately look away. “Good day, Snape-sensei (Professor Snape)." She says in a very formal yet polite tone.

The Potions Master can't help but look a bit surprised, he shouldn't be though. She used to call him “Severus-senpai" and sometimes “Severus-kun". He missed hearing those words from her. “Y/n, please talk to me.” He pleads. The Slytherin girl can't help but hold back the tears in her eyes. “Please, Y/n....” Severus begs. Y/n had enough. She then close her book shut. “What is your problem, Severus-kun, can you just leave me alone!??” She then snaps, tears still falling from her eyes.

The Potions Master then gets closer to her as he gently wipe her tears away. “Y/n, I just wanted to apologize. I'm so sorry for what I did to you all those years ago. I lied, used, and took advantage of you without realising that you truly loved me. But ever since you left, I started to have feelings for you. Real feelings. I've tried to do everything I could to fix it. But since then Darlington prevented me from doing so. I accepted the fact Lily will never ever love me. Ever since graduating, you're the only one that all I could think about. I realized I love you, Y/n L/n. You and not Lily Potter.” He confessed, finally letting out what he truly felt. The Slytherin girl's eyes widened at his confession. He truly loves her?

“You..... You truly love me?” Y/n ask, feeling unsure. Severus then nods his head in confirmation. He then gently took her hand in his as he then gently stroke her knuckles with his thumb. “I do, but I'll give you all the time you need. I won't force you.” He says, while he continues stroking her knuckles.

The Slytherin girl just nod her head, not knowing what to say. Severus then gives her small smile. A true smile. He then place his hand against her face. “I’ll be waiting for you.” he mutters. He then leaves the Slytherin Common Room with Y/n in her thoughts.

Ever since that day, the young Demon Slayer can't help but think of the words of her ex-boyfriend. Unlike he would normally do, he decided to give her some time to think. It has been a long time that both of managed to make an eye contact with each other, once again.

Severus had been nothing but patient towards her. He even gave her a pendant as a Christmas present to make up for what he did back in the past.

A part of Y/n was still mad at him and some part of her still love him despite what he did back in past.

After the end of the Holidays...

The Potions Master still remained true to his word. He continues being patient towards her. However, Andrea starts to get suspicious between what's happening with both of them during the feast in the Great Hall. She thought Severus slips a love potion in her drink but it turns out he looks at her friend with genuinely without anyone noticing.

Originally, back then Severus never makes an eye contact with her and he was focus with Evans on the Gryffindor Table, but now his attention was at her friend.

The Ravenclaw girl then sigh but swore if her former senior hurt her friend one more time. He's really going to regret it. One day, she then sents him a letter with her Kasugai crow instead of her owl. He then took the letter from the Crow’s leg before he carefully stroke it's beak before he let it leave him so he could read the letter.

It turns out Y/n thought long and hard about what he said back in the holidays. He read that apart of her was still mad at but some part of her couldn't stop loving him even though he was pretending to love her back then. He was relieved that she's going to forgive him but only just this once. She wouldn't give him another chance next time if he messed up once again.

Over the next two weeks, they both started to spend their time with each other in his private chambers after school. They started to get to know each other, for real this time. Since in their relationship in the past they never got to do so since Severus was so focused on Lily back then.

The Slytherin man then hug and comfort her when he found out her parents were slaughtered by a Demon when she was 7 and she had to live with her uncle after their deaths. She lived in the same village of her other close friends the Kocho Family. Y/n's uncle allowed her to study at Hogwarts when she turned 11 when she visited by Minerva McGonagall. Pretty much, the deputy allowed her to stay with her before the beginning of the school year. McGonagall was like a mother to her. She was sympathetic when she found out her parents were killed when she was young.

However, her uncle and her friends’ parents were killed when she was around 13 after her 3rd year, Kanae was around 12, and Shinobu was around 8. They waited for the Demons to devour them but that never came they were later saved by Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima. The three of them asked if he could let them join the Demon Slayer Corps. to make sure no one would experience the same thing as they did. The Hashira felt sympathetic towards the three of them and took them under his wing.

She also told Severus that the Headmaster and the other Professors allowed her to go out at night to be with the animals but in reality was to allow her train and do the missions she was assigned. She then told him everything that happened.

The Potions Master then hug her even tighter. “I’m so sorry, my love. You don't deserved to go through all of that.” he says, feeling truly sorry. Y/n then places her hand against his. “I know, Sev. But these hardships were the best teachers they thought us a lesson of life.” She says rather softly.

Severus just nod at that. However, some hardships can lead you into a darker path. Like he did, when he ended up becoming a Death Eater (in which he later regret).

He then carefully lifts her chin up so he could look into her eyes. He then leans his face against hers before pulling her into a kiss. Back then, they never truly did had their first since Severus was saving it for Lily, though.

The kiss was really full of love, sorrow, and guilt he felt at the moment. Well, they hoped this moment will never end without someone interrupting them.

3 months later (May 19; Kimetsu No Yaiba dimension).....

Demon Slayer girl then invited her boyfriend to the butterfly estate in her home dimension. Her friends; Kanae and Shinobu Kocho met Severus. They knew he was their friend's ex-boyfriend back in the past, but they didn't expect they would get back together. The Flower Hashira accepted him while Shinobu on the other took awhile to convince but managed to do so. However, like Andrea, she won't hesitate to hurt him like he did to Y/n.

Severus then joined his girlfriend along with her friends to town to go on a walk. However, something caught Y/n and Kanae’s attention. The Slytherin man along with Shinobu notice as well. It was a little girl being tied on a rope being pulled around by a man. She looked dirty. They could tell because her hair looks messed up and her clothes look very old and warn out.

The Potions Master can't help but clench his fist as he was suddenly reminded of his abusive Muggle father. He can't help but feel worried, sad, and of course he can't help but sympathize the little girl. Shinobu then immediately notice as her usual fierce expression then soften at the young Potions Master. “Hey, I knew what you are thinking but you know that the four of us knew what it's like to lose someone. I had to admit I can't help but feel bad for her too.” she mutters to him.

Y/n then took her boyfriend's hand giving it a gentle squeeze. Severus then squeeze back. The young Slytherin girl knew what her boyfriend was suddenly reminded of his father's past abuse on him and his mother. Shinobu's look then diverted back to her usual fierce expression.

The four of them then catch up to the man. Once they did, Kanae then takes a deep breath before she starts speaking. “Excuse me, do you have a moment?” She ask in a soft voice. The man look up to see three women and another man as he then turn around to face the four of them along. The little girl then also turned around. She had lilac colored eyes but they look dull and lifeless.

“I’m curious. Why is that child all tied up, is she a criminal perhaps?” Kanae ask, her tone of voice unchanged. “Isn’t obvious? She's dirty and fleering besides she might try to escape.” the man says in a harsh tone. Severus can't help but frown at that. He had a feeling that the girl must've lived in harsh area however the atmosphere she was in must've been abusive and roaring with arguments like he experienced.

Both Y/n and the Flower Hashira then approach the little girl as the former Slytherin girl then knelt down in front of her. Kanae then gives the girl a soft smile as she then looks up at her. “Hello there. How are you? My name is Kanae Kocho.” she starts to smiling at the little girl. It was Y/n's turn to smile. “And I'm Y/n L/n. What it your name?” she then ask in a soft tone.

The little girl just looks at the two of them. The two girls then blink when they noticed her eyes doesn't have any shine within them. “She doesn't have a name. She never got one. Happy now? Now go away!” The man says rather harshly as he tried to push Y/n off only to get his hand slapped away by Severus as the Slytherin male glared at him as that caught the attention of a lot people around them.

“Do. Not. Touch. Her.” Severus says in a low but dangerous tone as Shinobu stood next to him. “Agreed. Please don't touch my sister and my friend.” she warned in a blunt tone. The man looks irritated now. What hell is the matter with them?!! “What’s the deal with you four?! If you are interested in her, then maybe you should buy her.” He mocked.

Severus and Shinobu then looks at Y/n and Kanae for a few seconds. Shinobu then spoke up. “Very well then, we will. Is this enough?” She then threw a lot of money in the air as the man look shocked.

While being distracted, Shinobu then took the rope from the man's grip freeing Kanao from his grip. She then ran off with the others following behind her. The money then dropped to the ground. “Hey, get back here!” The man calls out.

Shinobu then turns around with a satisfying smirk on her face as she then face the man one more time. “You should hurry and pick all that up. There's a strong wind and a hungry crowd.” She then informs referring to the people who just witnessed the scene. “Are you sure about this?” Kanae asks, looking unsure. “Yes.” Her little sister replied.

“We must be going now!” Y/n calls out but the crowd seem to be focus on the money that was scattered on the floor. However, the same man who used to be Kanao’s Master lashed out warning them not to touch because it's his money.

Severus rolled his eyes. That man was really selfish and greedy. Y/n then sweat drops. “What a commotion.” she points out. What they didn't know the little girl's eyes then shine right after they took her in.

They then returned to the Butterfly Estate. Shinobu then decided that girl needed to take a bath due to how dirty she is from the condition she was living. Kanae then prepares some clothes for the her.

Severus then goes to the kitchen to help Aoi in the kitchen to make some food for the little girl. He doesn't show it he does seem to much. He does show concern to the little girl. Pretty much, she reminded a younger version of him when he was a child.

After she was all cleaned. Y/n help in dressing her up in the clothes Kanae gave her. Later both of the Kocho sisters carefully fixing the little girl's hair.

Y/n later notice that she looks really cute when she is all nice and clean. The little girl still doesn't know how to react.

30 minutes later....

Severus came with a tray of food in hand before he set it on the tiny table in front of the little girl. He doesn't give her his usual emotionless, cold, and rude facade he show towards the dunderhead students he teach.

He then leaves her to Shinobu as he then decided to join his girlfriend. Severus then sits next to her as he saw that she was reader a book. He can't help but give an assumed look. “Good book, I see?” he ask. Y/n then turns to look at him. “Yeah, it is, love.” she mutters as they start to enjoy their time with each other.

Kanae can't help but smile at the two lovers before she continues to clean her Nichirin Blade.

But that peace won't last long.

Moments later....

“Sister.... Y/n.... Severus.... She has to be told. She won't even eat unless if I say to. No matter how hungry she is.” The younger Kocho sister then points out.

Kanae then gently sets her Nichirin Blade before standing up. “She’ll be fine.” she reassures. However, that doesn't seem to reassure Shinobu. “What are we going to do to her?” She then ask, reluctantly.

The Potions Master then rolls his eyes looking very annoyed when Shinobu is being so doubtful of Kanao. He suddenly felt the urge to silence her but he had been restraining himself from doing so. Y/n just sigh. Her friend also tend to have a temper.

“Now now, don't you worry so.” Kanae reassures her little sister in a cheerful yet soft voice. “I hate to see that smile I love to disappear." She then adds. Okay, that made Shinobu even more irritated. “I’m serious. Taking a kid when she can't think of herself is reckless.” She starts as she along with Severus and Y/n watch as Kanae made her way towards the little girl. “You do have a point." The Flower Hashira agrees as she then final reach the little girl. “She can't make decisions even simple ones.” Shinobu points out.

Kanae then knelt down in front of Kanao as she then took out a small coin. “Next time when you are on your own. Flip this coin to make a choice, isn't that good?” she asks as the little girl just looks at the coin.

Y/n seem to find it to be a good idea. That way she would learn how to make any choices. Severus on the other hand seems to appreciate that Kanae is trying to teach Kanao how to be herself. However, at same time he wish that she can actually be comfortable enough to be herself without the coin.

“Oh come on!” Shinobu then complains feeling even more frustrated. “How can you be so cross with Kanao here, and look how adorable she is?” The Flower Hashira points out. That irritated the younger Kocho sister even more. “What kind of a reason is that?!!” She exclaims.

That's it. Severus has had enough of her complaining. “Alright, that’s it. I think you need some time out.” he says as he cast a silencing spell on Shinobu as the latter glared at him. The Potions Master rolled his eyes. She couldn't shut up.

Kanae seemed to be focus on teaching Kanao. “As long as one is given a chance a person's soul will open up. When you fell in love someday you'll change too, Kanao.” She says before gently placing the coin on her palm.

Both Y/n and Severus hope that Kanao will learn how to be herself in time. When the time comes she'll be able to open up to others more. For now, they just have to patient.

Dorohedoro by Hayashida Q - I decided to count manga series as one book, what of it? Read almost the entirety of this in February during a snowstorm. If you've followed me long enough you probably know how in love I am with this series. HashtagJusticeForDorohedoroAnime.

The Camelot Betrayal and The Excalbur Curse by Kiersten White - Hats off to White for always making me reassess my opinions of characters and where I thought certain plot lines were going. I really adore this YA series for its female characters and its reworking of the King Arthur legend. That and the writing style is just very good.

The From-Aways by CJ Hauser - Good synopses are important, and this book deserves a better one. The summary for this book makes it sound like a simple beach read, which isn't to my taste, so I wouldn't have given this book a chance if I hadn't already read and liked the author's second book. Anyway this book is about gentrification and ya wouldn't know it from the summary!

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova - Intriguing book about magical realism and a gripping mystery that forced me to keep reading until I read most of the book in one night.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Gotoge Koyoharu - I was going through a hard time while I read this manga. Gotoge and their story's kindness helped me a lot. The ending made me cry.

A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers - A sumptuous book about good food and cannibalism! Wink.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh - An honestly hypnotizing book about depression, grief, and an awful person as our narrator.
