15 questions for 15 friends
Thank you for the tag @elveny!
ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?: I am deliberately NOT named after my ex-aunt; my parents picked a different variant of the same name just to be sure nobody would ever get that impression
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?: It's actually been over a week which is a recent record!
DO YOU HAVE KIDS?: My husband and I are infertile together. It is the most horrible, dehumanizing, and soul-destroying thing I have ever been through. I'm still trying to figure who I am after this experience, because it's sure as fuck not the person I was before.
WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/HAVE YOU PLAYED?: I swim and weight lift
DO YOU USE SARCASM?: Less than when I was younger 😅
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?: Their clothes for sure. Not in a judgmental way. They just interest me.
WHAT'S YOUR EYE COLOUR?: Green
SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?: I don't totally understand why these are being juxtaposed as opposites? But happy endings. Horror is not my thing.
ANY TALENTS?: I'm a decent writer and a good cook :)
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?: Outside of Boston
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?: Writing, reading, home improvement, crochet, cooking, gardening, being a pest
DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?: Five cats and a bunch of fish!
HOW TALL ARE YOU?: 5'6"
FAVOURITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?: I loved being in school. The only subject I hated was PE (and that was mostly down to how it was taught; the summer PE class I took was great actually). I loved everything else. I just love learning things, no matter how random.
DREAM JOB?: Not having one

So it's done: I've pulled the plug on my old meatspace Twitter. My archive arrived earlier; I was able to download it before they start feeding everything to their crappy AI thing. (IIRC that starts on the 15th, though honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't already quietly at it.)
Anyway, it's a weird feeling when 12 years of your life just evaporates. There are now several ex-friends I have no way to contact. There are some people whose content I used to browse whom I can't. It's an ending. Even with late-stage Xwitter being a horrible mess, it still feels a little sad.
I did debate whether I should hang onto the username, but I have a feeling I won't be coming back there so eh, whatever. If you see anyone claiming to be me on Xwitter, they absolutely are not.
Anyway, you can find me on BlueSky now. Here's where I am (as LHS3020b there too):
Tumblr media
As one thing ends, another begins, and so far at least, I do have some hopes for Bluesky. We'll see how this goes.

Plan: Alcohol definitely seems the best option for any day in Two Thousand and Twenty, I entirely agree! Aside from bourbon, what's the best back-up drink at your fine establishment?
Ok, the bottle of wine I have is basically empty. So not that.
I have peppermint schnapps. But that;s for spiking peppermint mochas, so not that.
Wait. SCOTCH.
That;s right, Real Life Romance Option enjoys scotch, so we have SCOTCH.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY I AM SO HAPPY YOU MESSAGED ME!!!!!!!!!! I am  SO HAPPY we get to chat on discord because I MISSED YOU, and you have some of the fuckling COOLEST Mass Effect headcanons fucking EVER.
IF YOU HAVE NOT READ LHS’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO HEADCANON WEDNESDAY GO REAd THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE FUCKING INREDIBLE.

Yeah, "but what about the citizens?" is one of the many, many questions ME3 fails to answer. A lot of the implications of what we have are rather grim :(
~~~
I think my Pollyanna attitude in playing mostly paragon Shepards (not always the case, but mostly) just got tossed out the window.  I can feel a very AngryShep! forming for #86....
I freaking HATE loose ends at the end of a game/series like this.  Okay, so the stuff with Shepard, I get that and it certainly makes for great fanfic writing, right?  But EVERYONE ELSE?!
I think I may need to join @swaps55 with the drinking tonight ...  this hurts far too much. :(
*hugs* Happy Friday! I hope you get time to decompress. (also need that tbh)
I think I’ll get some time to myself in the next couple of days, but until then, at least I don’t have any stressful tasks on my to-do list :D
It all sounds quite demanding. I hope you get some time to decompress soon!
I will! It’ll still be a couple days before then, but all the hard stuff is done, so I think I’ll settle into some Pushing Daisies or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend when I can and block out the rest of the world :P
*hugs* happy Friday! I'm two weeks into class and enjoying the turn to fall weather.
*hugs* Yes! Because you get fall weather! I still have to wait another month or so before we’re even done with triple digits, but I’m very much looking forward to it! You should take some pictures of what fall weather actually looks like and let me live vicariously :D
happy friday! glad things are calming down a bit
Me too! I usually try to keep my Big Thing To Do down to just one thing a week, but I’ve definitely broken that rule. Time to Not Do Anything At All!
oh man, yeah dossing about a bit sounds like an excellent plan. I've been busy elsewhere lately - started at a new job :) lots of learning, but it's been good so far
A new job! That’s excellent :D I’m glad it’s going well! Not doing much at all this afternoon was the right call. My brain is already thanking me :P
lhs3020b replied to your post “After seeing more of Anthem; It’s really ME MP but with more world and...”
Interesting. Based on what you've said, Anthem sounds a lot like how FO76 was *supposed* to work. I'm wondering now if that was the idea with FO76 - it was supposed to be an Anthem-competitor?
I don’t think so. My impression of 76 is they were envisioning a version of Fallout in which real humans are the NPCs -- some friendly some not. Really, more of an RPG than a looter-shooter. But because Bethesda hasn’t run a massively online game before, and probably doesn’t have a lot of staff who have, I think they severely underestimated how much real humans in such a setting will rush to break the ‘intended’ mechanics as fast as they can. Basically, they made FO4 but let multiple people log on at once and expected that to work.
Anthem is built like an upscaled version of ME3 MP. The more I played it the more I was reminded of it.
As far as I can tell, none of mine have been flagged so far. Weirdly, I feel like I'm missing out somehow.
Same! It’s kind of disappointing! I’m not one of the cool kids. :(
tarysande replied to your post “The bright side to this is the site-wide pissing contest over who has...”
My only flagged post was a video of my cat begging for food next to my (shocking, I know) bare forearm
Scandalous!
I saw a spindle of yarn that was flagged. So far that's the best one I've seen.
trekkiemage replied to your post “The bright side to this is the site-wide pissing contest over who has...”
I had a stupid amount of fun laughing at what got flagged on my blog
I saw that! It was pretty amazing! My favorite so far is a bunch of Rothko posts that got flagged.
Thank you all so much for your kind messages. Good lord, I wish I could go back in time and tell 19-year-old me all of what you said, and everything I know now.
I’m still a little raw, because writing about that dragged out a lot of other stuff -- which isn’t a bad thing, necessarily; I’m fine with letting those memories shrivel up and die in the sun, instead of having them hiding in my head, ready to jump when my guard is down. But it does mean a few hard nights, and a lot of writing my way out.
(The way out has always been the same.)
I love you all, so darn much, and if I could hug you all, I would. Thank you again, for being so kind, and so generous. <3<3
If anyone else is also over there, I'm now LHS3020b over on BlueSky as well:
Tumblr media
(I was going to use my icon from here, but it seems I've lost the original WISE 3-colour image somewhere along the way, so instead we'll go with Neptune)
Halfings in my gaming world replies...
I'm sensing a common theme of things exploding here :)
To be quite accurate, it was less a set of explosions and more “one enormous rip in the fabric of space and time.” Don’t try this spell at home, kids!
lhs3020b replied to your post “you know your theory about Thedas being post-apocalyptic is just...”
Oh no, I see the Crap!Anons have returned. Sigh :( [For what it's worth, *I* like your theory re:Thedas!]
Aw, thank you! (And I don’t know where they come from. It’s been a while since I got a message like that.)
It’s also kind of funny because I do take worldbuilding seriously.... but in the context of the series itself. And usually, as a thought experiment (or as I said, sandcastles in my own sandbox; I’m never saying “this is the objective truth” about my headcanons, ever).
I mean, do I think that Bioware intended that everyone in Mass Effect drinks their drinks in weird tube things because turians don’t have lips? No, of course not. I think they did that because it was easier to animate with all the various species models. (I don’t judge for that; I work in software, and you have to make concessions if you ever want the product be released, and I’d rather they spent their time on character models and gameplay than on making everyone drink out of realistic-looking glasses.) But given that they all drink out of weird drink tubes, it was purely fun to go “and why might that be?” and then make up an explanation that the standard drinking vessel became a tube when turians became a Council species because turians don’t have lips and can’t drink out of ‘normal’ glasses.
Do I think that Bioware had some grand master plan as to why the society in Dragon Age simultaneously has the medievaloid stuff we saw in Origins and the frankly Early Modern stuff (widespread printed books, evidences of fairly heavy industry, etc.) we saw in 2 and Inquisition? No. But it was fun to come up with an explanation that sort of worked. I enjoyed it. People seemed to like it. Is it perfect? Of course not. But it was fun.
And part of it, too, is that not every series is looking for the same type of realism. I mean, plenty of people have written tl;dr lengths of stuff about how Star Wars is scientifically inaccurate, and/or tried to explain why things make sound in space in the Star Wars universe. I do not bother, because in the context of Star Wars, it seems to be radically beside the point. Star Wars isn’t even fantasy in space, because fantasy often at least tries to explain how its magic system works and so forth. Star Wars is folklore in space.  It is knights and princesses and dragons and evil sorcerers. And just like how Cinderella doesn’t stop to explain how the fairy godmother can do what she can do, Star Wars doesn’t stop to explain how the Force works. It operates on folklore logic. (Rogue One is a bit of an outlier, since it operates on war-story logic rather than folklore logic, but still.) When I headcanon for Star Wars, I do it on the level of character and culture... because that makes sense for a world that operates on folklore logic, and writing up all the ways that Star Wars is scientifically implausible would be a waste of time.
And the same thing for Bioware properties. Dragon Age operates on a Dungeons and Dragons, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink, rule-of-cool logic, and rather than critique or fight that, I embrace it. Mass Effect operates on a Star Trek, technobabble, tapdancing-over-the-math logic, and I embrace that too.
But mostly, I think, at the end of the day, it’s simply... I don’t care to engage with my fandoms on a primarily critical level. Could I poke a jillion holes in the worldbuilding for Dragon Age or Mass Effect? Sure. Easily. But I don’t want to. I want to go “okay, let’s pretend that’s true: what then?” I want to spin out ridiculous fantasies, make something new. That’s what I find fun.
And at the end of the day, for me, the whole point of this is having fun. Sandcastles.
servantofclio replied to your post “It's been a pretty exhausting week of things I never anticipated...”
oh wow that sounds like a lot! I am sorry about your ex-sil, but glad your brother has you in his corner.
The split is pretty amicable, so at least that’s fortunate—she just didn’t want to be married to him anymore and he didn’t want to be married to someone who didn’t want to be married back, which is a pretty reasonable position but still :/ They’re still friends and committed to co-parenting, and I definitely don’t want to bad-mouth the mother of his kids ... but she’s also being kinda shitty and leaving a lot on my brother’s plate SO (ง'̀-'́)ง
It’s been absoLUTELY exhausting but I’ve also gotten plenty of rest and water so I think I’m ready to go back to work tomorrow. I just wish I could’ve stayed longer to help more :(
