Venting a bit.

I hate feeling so conflicted in relation to something I'm so passionate about.

There's a lot of thinly-veiled casual misogyny and bigotry writhing around the GFL community that I've personally witnessed being completely unchallenged in open, actively moderated spaces. Ranging from "jokingly" hating anyone who picks the female commander in GFL2 to downright conspiracy theories about LGBT "propaganda."

Although... I don't know what I expected from such a relatively small and insular fanbase that has a decent chunk of its English following most prominently on 4chan, and ESPECIALLY from a game series popularised by marketing towards gun enthusiasts, on top of being an anime gacha game. I feel it should be obvious what kind of demographic that combination naturally fosters.

But even with that obvious fact in mind, it still hurts. I really like this series and the stories it has to tell. It has helped me get through incredibly tough times in my life since I started playing it in 2018, and continues to give me a lot of joy. But seeing the casual acceptance of some of the attitudes in a lot of the community makes me feel highly uncomfortable and unwelcome, and it risks tainting my view of the franchise at times.

It wasn't helped by me re-reading the GFL manga's sole English translation only to find the scanlator inserted extra "jokes" into their scanlation, and by "jokes" I mean some intrusive unfunny memes that break immersion in the scene combined with the occasional slur and hard-R thrown in for good measure.

Or people almost ALWAYS referring to the commander as a "he" 90% of the time, combined with despising the commander being female in the manga and calling her a mary sue. And we all know that term is always used accurately and never just used because you don't like a female main character nowadays, devoid of the term's original meaning.

A lot of these people seem to fear and dread GFL2 getting popular and "ruining" the franchise's core community, whether they mean it seriously or ironically. At this point, I hope it does. More people means more diversity, more success for Mica Team, and more people who can experience GFL's tales of love and hope.

The only part of the fandom I've found that I feel safe enough around to interact with actively is here on Tumblr, and I want to say thank you to everyone who posts about GFL on here. You're awesome.

So that was a tough watch. I generally agree with Rev here and company. Polygon's article did give me the clear cut idea of what's going on and I appreciate that particular article for getting me up to speed. So Rev just talked about how Polygon is worried about how an implied lesbian relationship between two characters in Gundam is being actively censored. There's two characters in Gundam that is implied to have a relationship with each other. Polygon believes them to have a relationship with each other and there is a recent interview with the VAs of both characters that had the word "marriage" in it. Bandai stepped in and removed the mention of "marriage" and all is well. Polygon is unhappy with this decision and they refer to it as censorship. Although, a month prior to this they released an article celebrating the censorship of Skullgirls. I have read the article and my opinion of that article is that it is very, very good at giving the gist of the situation. I appreciate that they have a slider that lets you compare the before and the after. Rev then says that most of the quote retweets on that particular Twitter post of Polygon about this queer censorship has been met with ridicule and mockery. I can see how that can be but I am disgusted with ridicule and mockery and would never ever engage. Do unto others what others do unto you.

Addendum: I've checked some of the quote tweets and, to me, they aren't anything special. Just the usual stuff you'd see in other places like 4chan's /co/ board. It's really tame and no mention of the Skullgirls thing there. Although there are a lot of mentions of anime and localizations. You can look it up yourself as I just had my brother pull it up on his PC.

Now, Skullgirls censorship is an issue and I am vehemently against it. What they did is remove the armbands of some Egrets, Parasoul's different palettes where she sports an armband has also been removed (although I have noticed a certain palette of Parasoul in Skullgirls Mobile to have that particular armband, I have to confirm my suspicions of it.) But the ones about panty shots that many say are censored have merit. You see, before the censorship (which technically is the color swapping of the character model's underwear, namely Filia) the color of the underwear was more distinct. So that it would contrast with everything. So when Filia does a move that gets her skirt up, you can see the panty shot. What the censorship did is change the color so that it essentially became a "blink and you'll miss it" ordeal. Panty shots are supposed to stay with you, it's supposed to make you stop and enjoy the awesomeness of the situation. Making Filia's panty shots a blink and you'll miss it situation is just awful and I find that it is worse than the censorship. It's just worse, I feel it in my gut.

And lastly, Yuri and the LGBT thing in anime. It's done a bit better than most western works. I can think of a few exceptions but essentially, I despise a lot of LGBT-themed works online or off. I grew up on Pinterest and Facebook. No one told me of other sites, no one told me that Reddit exists or what it is, 4chan or any other of the greater internet. (Just a quick FYI, the greater internet according to me is the ones that really make up much of internet memes and discussions. Reddit and 4chan are the chief two as I've noticed.) I was vaguely aware of Tumblr through Pinterest. So, on Pinterest there was this particular meme I kept seeing about two girls being so different and a panel where, usually drawn, has those two opposing ladies be in a lesbian relationship.

This is what I'm talking about! It gets obnoxious! Very obnoxious!

I do admit the particular examples I used aren't obnoxious in any way but my point is not these examples but the idea of these comics, if they can be defined as such. I'm just not a fan of Yuri and because of these comics, any hope I've had for a Yuri relationship anywhere is moot.

Also just a quick sidenote, most also consider the official English translation of manga to be censorious and I agree on that but the difference between that and Skullgirls is that official manga translations can be judged on a case-by-case basis and that's what I do. With the advent of manga piracy, it's very important to do just that. I have half an idea to check a lot of official translations and just see what they're all about. See the faults in them and post them here. Maybe when I get the proper manga to start with. Maybe.

i don't read a LOT either currently, but these are my personal faves:

Nevermore (Supernatural)- it's got GORGEOUS art, tragic lesbians and is based off the works of edgar allan poe. what more do you need?

Homesick (Thriller)- this is just. god-level thriller. monsters in an apocalypse, main lead with amnesia, really cool colour palette, good lgbt rep (in the sense the characters aren't drenched with their sexualities, but it's casual and normalized rep which i personally prefer to in-your-face rep) (the male main lead is ace!!), and a black cat. read it for the black cat. i know you like horror, but this has got graphic stuff so just a heads-up in case you consider reading it.

Love Advice From the Great Duke of Hell (Comedy) [completed]- i read this to unwind and GOD i was so happy i found it lmao. peak comedy. i actually fell off my chair because of this. felt like i got abs just by laughing so hard. it's completed too, so no suspense. idk if you've seen that one spinoff sort of story of the cat and the pointing lady meme, but this webtoon is by the same artist.

Finding Wonderland (Fantasy) [completed]- sort of based off Alice in Wonderland. i don't think i can say much without spoiling but it deals with a lot of issues really well. and has very immersive art. and plot twists. and "alice" and the "white rabbit" are lesbians lol. idk why half the things i find are gay. the finale is so good tho.

Unholy Blood (Supernatural) [also completed]- translated from the original korean version. it's got hot vampires lol. action, feels, strong female lead- absolute rollercoaster. the only thing i denounce are these two romantic parts in the finale which were really sudden and unnecessary and i'm just gonna pretend they never happened but otherwise it's really good. it's got comedy to balance out too, but doesn't get any less intense.

The Fever King (Superhero) [completed 🥹]- whew ok so this is based off a book by the same name, i read it really long ago and i remember nothing except concerning bits but it's amazing. the art is literally electrifying. if you read it with the right bgm it's movie-quality. sadly there isn't an adaptation of the second book and i haven't read the books either so i'll cry but it's good shit

Purple Hyacinth (Mystery) will rip your heart out. i was reading it during s2 hiatus hjaghsahsajk i died. basically assassin teams up w police officer who can detect lies for a common goal, and then ykw happens next. but this is seriously my top recommendation. it's the most beautifully balanced webtoon in terms of pace, art, storyline, lore, bgm and somehow accommodates equal measures intensity, angst, romance, comedy while also not sidelining friendship, themes like marriage and class disparities and ✨trauma✨

not the best summaries (if you can even call them that) but yeah i've read these and i really like em, and i think you might too. i haven't tried out genres like romance and stuff but my friend says some of them are genuinely worth it and are not just sappy dramas, so if you're interested in other stuff i can ask her to send recs too! if you ever consider reading lol.

also is this a good time to mention that not even bones has a webcomic adaptation which is how i discovered it in the first place, and webcomic kovit looks UNHINGED👌

it can't beat the actual book tho so it's good to read after finishing the books. season 2 just ended, so season 3 (for book 3) is going to take a while. it hits different when you already know what's going to happen lol

i did not think you would choose webcomics over books. this is a deal breaker. jk i won't break up with you because recently i've started liking digital comics and stuff like what webtoons has. last november this friend of mine was telling me about anime and how anime artists don't get the recognition they deserve. their episodes are really detailed and the fact that it's all graphically designed just shows the kind of hard work they put into their content. how many webcomic/anime artists are actually famous? like, well known around the world? definitely not enough to explain the sheer amount of digital content that we have.

Hey, Rad... Alex... Alexlememe? I know that's the name you used to go by and I know you've kinda disconnected yourself from Viv's fanbase after ZP ended, and I remember your memes and such but I kinda just wanted to get your take on the Hazbin drama since you reblogged the headcanon blog's post on the subject. More or less regarding the issue of her being uncharitable to fans and non-fans alike, plus that one callout post on twitter?

So this is weird. I wasn’t expecting to get asks on the subject since like you said, I’ve generally been disconnected from the fanbase aside from the few reblogs here and there retaining to Hazbin and its more recent developments. But yeah I guess I could give my take on this since I mean.. old fans still follow me. Idk why, but they do!So, really. In regards to that callout post (which is now deleted) I really, really don’t care that much. For one thing, Initially I did because I really hated to see someone be slandered so viciously with inaccurate and uncharitable attacks, but I kinda just stopped because even when I linked the addresses from both Viv, and the Ken dude regarding all the drama mentioned, it was either ignored and resulting in me being called a “pedo sympathizer” or “It wasn’t even an apologyyyyy weh” and like, whatever. I stopped giving a shit.

Terms of the traced animation thing... Lol, ok. I mean homages do exist, and her animation thingy was based on a meme so whatevs.

Anyways,I knew from the very start that the whole “tracing” and “stealing designs” stuff was nonsense since there was an entire like, tumblr drama arc on the issue, and albeit Viv’s post is gone, there’s evidence of legal contracts regarding Jiji and that whole nonsense that was years ago. In regards to her drawing pictures of Blaire White and Shoe… Eh. I mean, yeah, fuck em, but she’s made it clear that she doesn’t support those views anymore, and she wasn’t even really aware of the other things they’d done at that point, and I see no real reason not to believe her because what does lying about that gain her? Yeah her comment on the “blackface” thing if you wanna call it that was dumb as shit, but considering 2016 was a rough year for her in terms of trying to find where she fell in the political sphere, I can relate because I was in the same boat. A lot of sjw cringe comps, shaming feminists, and purposely misgendering transpeople… Not a good time for me either! Course I’ve changed. I went from being a reactionary alt-centrist to an anarchist so. Whether that’s an improvement is up to you.

As for the whole pedo/zoo shit, I really don’t see it. I mean like, look, obviously porn art portraying people fucking feral animals is disgusting right. Not saying it isn’t problematic or anything, but to be fair, she did draw this shit like 8 years ago. I’ve seen worse from even more well-established artists and I don’t see people trying to cancel them? Also, the art was suggestive for one thing and not necessarily 100% porn. I mean it’s still creepy and gross, and I’d understand scolding them if they continued to do so but a lot worse, but I haven’t seen anything like that from Viv past those 2 drawings. As for the pedo shit… The relationship between a 17 year old and a 19 year old is… hardly creepy and reminiscent of pedo shit. So yeah no fuck that. Now with the drawing of Mirage and Kestrel and the tag that said something jokingly like “Mirage and her pedo tendencies” or whatever… Yeah idk, I can’t defend that lmfao. Again, Viv said she disapproves of those drawings and doesn’t care to think about them, but that one piece of artwork definitely had some baggage to it that made me feel uncomfortable after reading the tags.Only issue I took in terms of her addressing that, is that she was very adamant about it being an inside joke… Which if that’s true, you must’ve had some fucked up friends like damn.

I would also like to state that cub art is legitimately disgusting and I am of the belief that it can cause harm depending on the context since I assume the consumption of cub art can reinforce the urge for pedophiles to act on their desires instead of finding healthy coping mechanisms for it through therapy. There have been stories from younger users on the internet that older people have tried to groom them and have the notion of pedos preying on them be normalized by sending them art depicting kids in sexual acts with adults. Of course in isolation cub art isn’t as harmful as the actual act of raping a child, and I would argue that people have their priorities kind of messed up since the illustration being acknowledged should be part of combating pedophiles preying on children. However, people, typically twitter wokescolds tend to focus on the art solely and I don’t know why. There’s a lot of MAPS trying to find their way into LGBT spaces and it’s fucking gross.

Now with Hazbin itself… It’s meh. Initially I watched it with rose-tinted glasses and loved it. After watching it for like… the 3rd, 4th, 5th time? It’s alright. I don’t hate it, but it’s far from perfect. Now ofc I know it’s a pilot but a very lengthy pilot I’ll say. My biggest gripe with the pilot is that the editing is really fucking weird. Like the editing where Angel tells Alastor “I can suck yah dick!” and the scene that followed was really off. It seemed like too many cuts were made in that instance and seemed very cluttered. It also feels that way during Charlie singing “Inside Every Demon is a Rainbow” and how many little animated bits were like almost wiped off the screen by how fast it came by, and ntm there was just so much happening all at once on screen as well. I had to pause at points just to process everything that was happening. The palette is also very, very, verrrry red. There’s so much red going on and like… I get it, it’s in hell. But lemme rest my eyes on something else besides red, please. The palette they use needs to be better diversified, and the same goes for the characters too. Every character seems to have red on them. Whenever Baxter shows up later he’s gonna look really out of place. Some of the jokes were ok, and others seemed non-clever. I didn’t think Angel’s joke about sucking Al’s dick was funny. I did like the joke with Pentious and Angel though. “SON??” Some of it could’ve been written better too.

Regarding the drama with the show itself… Personally I don’t get it. Like, I don’t feel as if Angel is homophobic as a character since his queerness isn’t at the face of the jokes he makes? He just happens to be sex worker which… sex workers are fine? Support sex workers y’all, seriously. There’s also nothing intrinsically wrong with being sexually active either? As long as it’s within reason and you’re being trustworthy.The issue lies in the fact that people viewed the things I just mentioned as negative, and associate it with gay people as said negatively portrayed thing to push the sentiment of “Gay man do sex a lot therefore the gays bad” or that sort of thing. Also there’s a bit where it shows there’s more emotional depth to him and I’m hoping they’ll expand on that later. Honestly though, the criticisms in regards to that have been pretty uncharitable. Same with the criticisms for Vaggie. Apparently Vaggie is racist because… she’s loud and angry? Again, this is a case where people assume those traits are negative, and because it’s assumed to be negative, the negatively portrayed thing pushes the sentiment of “Being a loud fiery woman made, and latina women are that, therefore latina women bad” or some shit.  There are stereotypes that are bad no matter what the context is like sambo-esque caricatures of black people. Then there are tropes that are applied to certain demographics that have the capability to be written well into characters without it being offensive or disrespectful. Vaggie is literally angry because she’s protective of her gf. Like. C’mon.

So, I think that settles what I think about that? It honestly seems like superficial shit to me tbh, and I’m saying this as an sjw-y beta cuck anarchist.

The only REAL gripe I have, is with what the mod from @zpheadcanons posted. Because I know this is probably true as much as it hurts me to say it. Faust def has a history of being pretty petty and bully-like to people she deems undesirable, and Viv harbors it by not criticizing it, and if anyone else within their friend group does it then you’re scolded vehemently and treated like garbage. Her attitude also stretches to harboring an audience full of white knights that I personally don’t approve of.

If you don’t make an effort to criticize abusive behavior within your own friend circles then that makes you just as bad, because then you’re just a bystander to things you could have prevented.

This isn’t to say Viv herself hasn’t dealt with bad faith actors, or people who had the intention to hurt her, or very uncharitable criticism. Particularly from the badwebcomics forums which is honestly 4chan like in how they operate. It’s vicious as hell, and a lot of their criticisms boil down to insults and personal attacks, which serve to be nonconstructive. That’s not to say Viv has been kind to even the more charitable criticism though. I know because when I happened to send an ask to the zoophobia criticism blog (where did it go???) regarding something relatively minor and superficial, she blocked me from her blog. I’m still blocked lmfao. I’m not blocked on twitter though! (not yet anyways). Faust has me blocked there though, and I have no idea why. She’s had me blocked for years even though I haven’t spoken out against her till recently. So, there’s that.

As for her apology itself, I feel like it was fine. I think it could’ve been worded better? The take I disagree with in terms of that is like… If I made a mistake in the past, and I make it clear that I don’t care for what I did, I don’t feel as if me explaining why I felt compelled to do certain things negate me from still not caring for my past actions? That’s just me providing context. That’s a really weird take, but I guess that could be viewed as an excuse idk. Personally I think people are holding the bar super high to a state of irrationality.

*sigh* So yeah there’s that. I miss the old days where honestly I could be ignorant about this, but at the same time I look at my old obsessive posts and I kinda just… cringe. I was such an irrational stan I almost hate myself for it. Fuck XD

Edit: I’d also like to point out that I’m not saying Viv or Faust are totally awful or totally good people, and I know they’re capable of being better. It’s a matter of whether or not they wanna be better.
