i do my best to be chill and analytical and look at character arcs for what they are instead of what i want them to be, but all of that went flying out the window after that air mattress scene. what do you mean they haven’t kissed yet

as one of the aforementioned “good homeschoolers” this absolutely 100% needs to be regulated.
even setting aside the educational standards and assessments (bc there are plenty of private and even public schools where those standards aren’t met and the assessments are more about funding than actually supporting the children who fail, but that’s a whole other nuanced conversation) it is sosososo easy to trap children in neglectful and abusive situations.
and it isn’t even necessarily malicious! i grew up alongside families with kids w developmental disorders and learning disabilities that probably could have received better support in public schools (again, another nuanced conversation) simply bc their well-meaning parents didn’t know how to give them what they needed.
like. education is a complicated issue without tacking the variability of homeschooling on top of it but regulation would be a huge step in the right direction.
homeschooling in the US needs to be regulated but this is one of those conversations that immediately gets crushed by extremist conservatives and even well-meaning liberals will pipe up to be like "well some homeschooling is good!" when that's absolutely not relevant. regulation will not change anything for the homeschooling families who are serious about their children's education. the people who need to be regulated are the fringe extremists

Give me both, frankly.
All in all, I think publishing just needs to get its shit together when it comes to marketing bc I (and I imagine many other people) have yet to pick up a book based on its publisher’s marketing alone. The advertising is either nonexistent or it’s hyper-reliant on booktok microtrends that themselves are pale imitations of some other nearly-dead trend from some other side of tiktok. Hijacking fandom language is the closest they’ve come to actually speaking the language of their consumer base, and they’ve latched on HARD.
Ideally, we could get marketing that simultaneously tells us what the book is actually about, as well as giving us a shorthand assurance that the execution of that premise isn’t bland as fuck. Right now, the only people doing that effectively are the authors themselves, which is a completely separate problem in that massive trad pub houses should not be forcing authors to do their own advertisement in exchange for the pathetic excuse they call advances these days.
The reason categorizing fanfiction by tropes works is because there's already an established setting, cast of characters, and theme in the original work, so when people write fanfics they're building sand castles in pre-existing beaches, but when you advertise your book as "sci-fi enemies to lovers where there's only one bed and also they're gay" it says nothing about what the premise is, who the characters are, or what the book is actually trying to say. That's not to say that books containing stuff like "sci-fi enemies to lovers where there's only one bed and also they're gay" can't be absolutely fantastic books, but if you only advertise by listing off tropes that are inherently cookie-cutter then you're implying (whether intentionally or not) that there's nothing interesting or memorable about the book besides smashing tropes together like you're playing with action figures.

Walter Sullivan’s car
I spent literally four hours researching this for a throwaway line in a fic which doesn’t even apply anymore. Please appreciate my nerdiness so this doesn’t go entirely to waste 😭😭
Tumblr media
This is Walter Sullivan’s car — a 1954 Jaguar XK120 Drophead Coupé (DHC), Special Equipment (SE) version.
These were manufactured in 1953–1954. Only 295 right-hand drive versions of the XK120 DHC were made, with less than 40 right-hand drive SE versions
The DHC SE was basically the “sport version” of the DHC. It had a 3.4 litre engine which produced 180–190 bhp, up from the regular DHC’s 160 bhp. I’m uncertain about its top speed, but the Open Two-Seater (OTS) model on which the DHC was based had a reported top speed of 125 mph, and could achieve 0–60 mph in 10 seconds. This made it the fastest production car in the world as of its debut in 1949, a title it seems to have carried until 1953
The DHC SE version had the following improvements on the DHC:
Wire wheels, meaning increased cooling to the brakes
Uprated torsion bars & rear springs
More powerful engine with high-lift cams
Dual exhaust system (this one was possibly an optional extra on top of the usual SE offerings?? Basically I found some sites that say the DHC SE had a single exhaust, except in the entirely unexplained “Super Sports model”… but also that might just be a difference between UK & US models, idk)
I wasn’t able to find information on original prices for the DHC SE, but you could probably make a rough estimate based on the following:
Apparently the OTS cost £1600 in 1953. (For context, the average house price was £1800 and the average salary was £10 a week)
The DHC probably would’ve cost more than the OTS, as it came with additional comforts such as a lined roof, external door handles, roll-up windows, opening quarter lights, and wood-veneered dashboards & door-caps
The DHC SE would’ve cost more than the regular DHC due to its further additional features and more powerful engine
Walter’s car in particular also has optional extras of Lucas fog lights and a Radiomobile car radio. It possibly also has (unseen) optional extras of a larger fuel tank and/or an underbody steel shield
Of course, after I’d spent literally four hours researching this (most of which was spent struggling to figure out if it actually was an SE version, or if it was just a regular DHC with some optional extras), I finally came up with the much simpler and easier idea of just. googling the car model + “hire”. Which immediately brought up the hire website for the exact car used in the show:
Although it doesn’t specifically say it’s the SE version, the 180 hp is a clear indication. Why did I not think to do this like three and a half hours sooner,,,,
Also put the registration plate through the DVLA checker to get the 1954 manufacture date! Apparently it was first registered in July 1954, if you want to be particularly specific
Anyways. TL;DR: Walter Sullivan’s car is only like a year old; it’s fast, fancy, and super rare… and most of all, it’s ridiculously expensive

Broke: Elves have the weakest alcohol of all fantasy folk
Woke: Everyone else just thinks the elves have the weakest stuff because that’s what the elves serve when they have guests over. The elves know they can’t handle the real shit
Any setting where the elves have weaker booze than the dwarves isn't committing to the bit

i admittedly loved girl dinner and girl math when they first started trending bc they felt so fun and positively commiserating to me. girl dinner reframed negative self-talk around food into a group of friends giggling about how actually their lazy, no-spoons meals were kinda like a poor woman’s charcuterie board if looked at in the right light, and girl math brought a “treat yourself” mindset to the backward, jumping-through-hoops justifications we often do to convince ourselves that we are in fact deserving of nice things that make us happy.
the problem is that, even if these interpretations had been clearly and explicitly stated from the beginning (which they weren’t), control of the narrative was lost the literal second the trend broke containment. misogyny is so inherent to society that you can’t even tack the word “girl” onto concepts and trends made by girls, for girls because once the gender essentialists get whiff of it, it’s over. men start using it to belittle women, women start using it to belittle women, terfs start using it to exclude trans women while simultaneously belittling cis women, spin-offs and bastardizations start popping up to further reinforce the binary gender divide, and what started as a fun way to connect with other women and girls about the ways you playfully defy society’s expectations that you constantly be pretty and healthy and thin and fiscally responsible and good at cooking and the perfect budgeter and homemaker is suddenly being used against you to remind you that, to them, your personality should only ever amount to eating disorders and shopping.
“i’m just a girl” and whatever is going on with the pink collar jobs trend (supposedly, i’m not on tiktok anymore so i haven’t seen it firsthand) started a lot closer to the negative end of this spectrum for obvious reasons, and hearing that it’s apparently still going strong makes me fucking uncomfortable for what i hope are also obvious reasons.
but at the same time i do lament the loss of safe places to laugh about the ways we as girls and women cope with the weight of patriarchal expectations without those jokes being ripped away from us, broken in half and pasted back together the wrong way around, and handed back to us with a little note that says no, being a woman means being miserable. never forget that you are stupid and lesser. you will be happy with the role you’re given, and if you ever make a joke about your experience with your gender again, you better make sure it’s at your own expense.
You can be talking to someone and she'll be like, "Oh I made a silly mistake. Women don't deserve voting rights teehee." And you'll be like, "What." And she'll be like, "Oh I'm sorry! That must sound so bad out of context. No it's this Tiktok meme where, if you're a girl and you do something dumb, you say 'Women don't deserve voting rights teehee.'"
And you'll be like, "That sounds bad." And she'll be like, "No no. It's totally not that bad. It's just a meme. Men say it too. Like if a man does something silly he'll be like, 'I am like those women who do not deserve to vote.'" And you'll be like, "Does that make it better?" And she'll be like, "Well there was one guy who tried to make 'Men shouldn't vote' a popular meme. But it never caught on and also he got yelled at a lot."
And then you drop it there because like, you're harshing the vibe.
