Sunday walk a LeviHan headcanon
LeviHan fanart by @ashh-ketchup / Thank you so much Ash 💖
With permission of the artist / Please do not repost
Tumblr media
Happy Birhtday Jay @jayteacups !! 🎂
✨Back home after a walk, Levi looks into Hange's honey-brown eyes, runs his fingers tenderly through their messy hair & puts one of their locks behind their ear
✨Hange sits on the couch, exhausted by the walk. Levi goes to the kitchen to put the flowers they picked in a vase, then comes back with a cup of hot tea for them. He takes off their shoes & starts a foot massage for them to relax
✨After Levi's gone, Hange puts on the sweater he left on the armrest of their sofa. They wrap themself in his warmth & scent, because the evening's chilly & take their cat on their lap for a cuddling session
✨Later, remembering they won't see Levi before next week-end, Hange rushes to the fridge, grabs something inside, drags themself painfully to the couch & slumps in it ; they end up eating a whole chocolate chips & vanilla ice cream pot out of sadness
✨As Hange's going to bed, head down & dragging their feet, their phone rings : Levi wishes them good night in his deep & soft voice & tells them 'I love you Hange' before hanging up the phone. Hange's gonna sleep well & dream about him, that's for sure 💖

🎂 Happy Birthday, Levi 🎂
**********************************
Theme: 'Sweet like sugar' - Count: 733 words
Pairing: Levi x Fem!Hange - Modern AU - 'No Name' - SFW
**********************************
His heart seemed to be throbbing in his throat as he heard Hange’s voice coming from the corridor over the hubbub of the concert hall. He wondered what was wrong with him these days; he felt so oddly different. Something had changed and he didn’t know what.
No Name was becoming more and more famous within their high school and even outside. They already had several shows booked and they were playing their third tonight.
« Levi! You’re already there! » Hange and Mike finally entered the dressing-room, laughing like dorks as usual. He mumbled a vague hello, turning to them. Mike whispered a polite good evening and took his drumsticks, then joined his girlfriend in the corridor. « Still eating candy, Four-Eyes? You’re gonna get sick and stain your white shirt, tch… » Levi replied, wrinkling his nose in disapproval. Teasing him, Hange stepped forward and he felt her warm and sugary breath on his face. « You know I need that before going on stage! Calms me down, you see? And makes stage fright go away » she said in a bright smile.
Coming closer to him, licking a huge lollipop with an exaggeratedly greedy air, she offered « Want some, Shorty? » Levi froze. He was fascinated by her glistening lips covered with sugar. Blushing with embarrassment, he abruptly turned his gaze away. Mike stuck his head through the half-open door to tell them it was time to play, giving Levi the opportunity to recover. Hange put her lollipop aside for later and grabbed her guitar.
So far, their performance was amazing. The concert hall was crowded but they recognized their friends among the wild audience. Many were jumping, dancing and fangirls were shouting Levi’s or Hange’s names, making them smile back seductively.  Song after song, they were getting more confident and connected, and flirted playfully with the audience. But all good things coming to an end, it was time for the last song. They had decided beforehand to play Levi’s mother favourite song to close the gig.
Levi’s deep and soft voice begun to intone « She floats like a swan, grace on the water, lips like sugar, lips like sugar ». Enthralled, the fangirls shouted his name, but, called on by the word ‘sugar’, all he had in mind was Hange’s lips. He shook his head to let the vision go away…  Then the lyrics went « She’ll ask and you’ll give her » and Hange came by his side to get closer to add her voice to his. They both leaned to the mic, their faces so close to each other he could feel her breath on his face again and they sang the chorus together « Lips like sugar, sugar kisses »… Levi couldn’t help staring at Hange’s soft sugary lips and froze once again, mesmerized. The world blurred around him and nothing else remained except Hange’s fascinating lips moving as she sang.
It lasted a few confusing seconds, but it was enough for him to feel his heart beating faster and louder and his face violently blushing. He sang the song to the end as if he was in a dream, wrapped in cotton, removed from any sensations other than Hange’s presence near him, singing the chorus with him again and again. Suddenly, it was over and they waved the audience goodbye as they went off stage to get to the dressing-room, Levi still feeling dizzy and uncomfortable.
Sensing what was going on around him, Mike pretended to be thirsty and headed out towards the bar, leaving Levi and Hange alone. « You look so weird today, Levi! What’s wrong? » she asked, licking her lollipop again. « You want a hug or something?» she offered, coming closer, so close now he blushed and mumbled « I… the last song, it… ». But he couldn’t utter a word anymore. Staring at her lips, he imagined their sugary taste and how soft they should be against his own lips. « Levi, what are you looking at? » she said. He couldn’t wait longer and, putting his hand on Hange’s waist, pulled her into him, bringing his lips close to hers. She leaned towards him and they finally shared a soft kiss, sweet as honey. They both closed their eyes as for the first time they tasted each other’s lips. « Lips like sugar, sugar kisses ».

This is for Levihan Week!!
Day 1: School
Summary:
Step one: meet her best friends. Step two: find her destined partner. Step three: research, kids, house. Hange has her life planned and expects it to stay up to her wishes. She thinks it does, when she meets Zeke, and believes him to be her soulmate. But what if her true partner is someone else, someone she knows since forever and who turns out to be her best friend? Is it possible that her grumpy friend could be what she always dreamed for, without knowing?

Summary:
It was a normal, peaceful day in school until Eren tried to impress him, and now Levi found himself hiding in a cramped dark closet with a girl he barely knew to escape the wrath of a thousand bees ready to unleash their vengeance on them.
Dammit Eren.
Read the fic below:
It all started when that bitchbrat Eren slammed open the window that was not supposed to be opened.
Just a few minutes ago, Levi was having a nice, normal day at school. He had skipped PE to finish up his homework in his classroom, relishing the silence that came with being alone after spending most of his morning with his draining classmates. The only sounds that filled the empty, echoing classroom was the creak of the dusty old ceiling fan and scratch of his pen on his notebook. Soft sunlight shone in through the two of the five windows that were open and even if Levi was sitting near one of the closed windows, he did not feel like shifting to a seat with better lighting.
But his moment of silence was broken when Eren entered the classroom.
“Ah, Levi! Why are you all alone here?”
Levi suppressed a frustrated sigh. Eren was his junior, three grades younger than him. Levi never attempted to interact with his peers in other divisions, much less in other grades, but unfortunately for him, he and Eren shared the same bus-stop. And for some reason, Eren’s eyes would always sparkle like stars when he saw Levi.
It was annoying.
“Why are you here?” Levi frowned as Eren walked in, looking around curiously at his senior’s classroom.
“Ah, I had taken a washroom break.”
“Then go.”
“I did. I just wanted to kill some time before going back to my classroom. Geography is a boring subject.”
Levi was not surprised. No person, sane or insane, liked geography anyway.
Eren noticed the shoes littering the classroom. “Oh, did your classmates go for PE?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you not go? I thought you liked PE. You are the fastest sprinter after all.”
“Just because I’m good at something doesn’t mean I have to like it,” He waved his notebook at him. “I’m finishing up my homework.”
“Oh, do you need any help?”
“Sure, solve this for me,” He pushed a complex quadratic equation at Eren. Eren stared at it, eyes blissfully blank and then chuckled in a sheepish way, scratching at his ear.
“I can’t do sums three grades higher than me.”
“Then shut up and go back to your class.”
Much to his ire, Eren shook his head, “Well that doesn’t mean I can’t do other things to help you, you know? I can speed up the fan if you want!”
“No need.”
“Oh, why are you sitting in the dark? That’s right, let me open the window for you at least.”
It took Levi a second before the gravity of his words hit him through the continuous stream of ‘oh god he is annoying’ that looped in his brain. “Wait, no,” he exclaimed, his eyes widening as he whipped his head towards Eren, “Don’t touch that win-”
Too late.
Eren, with his chest puffed up in triumph, pushed open the window with all his strength and in that moment, Levi could see his entire life flashing before his eyes.
Levi was the first one to notice it a few months ago as he stared out of the window during tedious lectures- the little goop on the slab shading the window from outside, and how there seemed to be an influx of bees buzzing around. After a while, it was obvious: a group of honeybees had started to build a hive right outside the window. When he had informed it to his teacher, she asked the students to close the window and not open it till the hive was removed.
But days passed by and no one removed the hive. One day, as Levi was walking past the watchman Hannes, he heard him talking about it with the other staff members.
“The beehive outside the third floor classroom has grown pretty big, y'know. I did ask Principal Zachary about its removal, but he said that it was a pain in the ass to call in men and remove the hive when it was that small, so he’s planning to wait till it grows so that he can harvest the honey while removing it as well.”
“But what if it hurts the children?” one of the other staff asked, leaning on his broom.
“Tis what I asked. But the principal seemed firm in his decision. He told the students and the teachers to not open the window and the two windows next to it. After all, bees don’t bother you if you don’t bother them.”
“I get that, y’know? If the beehive grows to the maximum size, we could probably harvest more than twenty kilograms of honey from it. Honey fetches a good price after all...”
So the beehive remained carefully untouched till then.
And when Eren, in his oblivious glory, slammed open the window, all hell broke loose.
Levi barely had the time to grab a screaming Eren by the back of his collar and run for their lives. The heavy wooden door hit the fat hive and the angry bees swarmed in, poised with their stings to defend their home. Once they were out of the classroom, Levi flung the boy ahead of him. “Run,” he commanded.
“But-”
“RUN!”
And Eren ran. Levi held back, slamming the door and windows on the other side of the classroom shut so that the bees would be contained within the classroom instead of finding their way into the corridor to the rest of the school.
But the bees had other ideas, and other routes. And within seconds, there was an uproar throughout the building.
“Tch,” Levi cursed internally as he ran towards the school office. He had to alert the authorities, to ask them to announce through the speakers to shut all the windows. However, the bees had already entered the school through the other passages and they were now flooding the corridors in a buzzing cloud of fury as students and teachers started rushing outside the classrooms alike, screams filling the air.
“Everyone, lock the doors and windows of your classrooms,” boomed all the speakers in the school at once, “A swarm of bees are spreading out. Take shelter immediately.”
Finally Eren did something useful for once, Levi thought as he turned a corner, looking desperately for somewhere to hide. But the doors and windows of the other classrooms were already locked shut, and Levi knew if he were to bang on the door and wait for them to let him in, he’d risk not just being bitten, but also letting the bees enter into the classrooms.
An overly aggressive bee zoomed straight at him, and in reflex, Levi tried to swat it away. Which was a very bad idea, as he immediately felt a sharp sting on the back of his palm. He hissed, gritting his teeth in pain.
One of the buzzing bastards had got him at last.
With watery vision and panic rising steadily within him, he almost felt his heart jump out of his throat when a random hand grabbed his arm, breaking his run, to yank him inside a storage closet and close the door shut.
Levi crashed into something soft, which in turn crashed into something hard. He felt small objects raining on him- both metal and plastic- as if he had knocked over a shelf lined with things. He was in one of the storage closets after all.
A soft groan from below made Levi push himself up, only for him to freeze as he came face to face with a girl sprawled underneath him. With the help of the small glass peep-window on the door that let in a sliver of light inside the dark room, he saw the startled look in her big brown eyes behind an askew pair of glasses.
A girl. He had a girl pinned underneath him.
She rubbed the back of her head, ruffling her messy brown hair in the process as she cocked her head to the side, like a bird.
“You’re welcome, but you are kinda heavy, you know?”
Levi felt heat rush to his ears as he scrambled away, his back digging into yet another shelf as he tried to put some distance between them. It did not work very well, however, the storage closet was too small and cramped that it was only comfortable for one person standing in it at a time.
“What’s happening out there?” the girl asked, straightening her glasses as she stood up, “Are they removing the hive?”
“No,” Levi said as he glanced at the stinger buried in the back of his hand, “A stupid kid disturbed it.”
“You got stung?”
“Yeah.”
“Wait, show it to me in the light.”
Levi was curious himself, so he obeyed, positioning his hand in the sliver of light that streamed in through the tiny glass window at the top of the door.
His skin had reddened and started to swell where the stinger had embedded itself. It was agonizing and Levi clenched his jaw as the girl hovered close to it. “Wow, that must hurt. Any other place you got stung?”
“No.”
“Okay, let me remove this for you.”
“Huh?” Levi automatically pulled his hand back from her vicinity, “No.”
The girl’s eyebrows rose. “You don’t trust me with that?”
“I don’t even know you.”
“Right,” the girl pointed to herself with a thumb, “I’m Hange, and I think I’ve seen you around before.”
“Where?”
“We are in the same grade, you know. Just different divisions.”
Levi squinted. True, he did not pay much attention to his classmates in other divisions, much less bother to remember them or their names, but why did he not recognize her from her appearance at least?
“Oh, I joined this school this year, by the way.”
Ah. That explained it.
“I have been a very outdoorsy person from childhood and I’ve been stung by bees more than once in my life. So, I know what you must feel right now and I kinda know what to do about it,” she continued, “Anyway, I think that’s enough information for you to trust me with the stinger.”
Without waiting for Levi’s reply she swiped her ID card from its holder and grabbed Levi’s hand.
“What about you?” she asked, “What’s your name?”
Distracted by the question, Levi attempted to answer it. “Le-”
He flinched, grunting in pain as Hange swiped the ID over his hand without hesitation, effectively removing the stinger, with way more force than necessary.
“There we go!” she declared proudly, a wide smile on her face. “Good job, Lee!”
Levi was still smarting from the sting to correct her.

SUPER EXCITED FOR THIS!
LEVIHANWEEN - The Levihan Drabble Week pt. 2 (Halloween Special)
Tumblr media
Hello, Levihan stans! The admins are back with another installment of the Levihan drabble week (the first event we ever held ;)) this time, we are going with the Halloween theme and are excited to celebrate Levihanween with the fandom!
Starting right off, I want to mention that the drabble week is open to all kinds of content creators and not just writers. We just stick with the name of drabble week because that was what we started with.
The Levihanween will run from October 25th to 31st 2021. This time, we'll give the prompts beforehand and introduce two new features, that is the prompt path and paired-up projects. Read on to know more about how we make the drabble week unique!
⊕ prompt paths
One of our main goals for the drabble week is to make it as customizable as we can! and that is why we give an option of two types of prompts the participants can receive. we have Levi's list and Hange's notebook, and you can use any of the above two depending on the kind of writer, or artist you are!
We'll also give an option to receive NSFW prompts for each day. Just make sure you tag your work properly!
In addition, you can also alternate between Levi's list and Hange's notebook for different days. For example, you can use the specified prompt from Levi's list for Monday while you use something from Hange's notebook for Tuesday!
Now, we are very excited to reveal the prompts we chose for this drabble week. We had a lot of fun choosing them and we hope you will like them too!
LEVIHANWEEN PROMPTS - Levi's list
Levi's list is a collection of very vague, one-word prompts for creators who prefer more freedom on what they would like to create. here's our list for the second drabble week, the Levihanween version 2021 October!
Monday 25th October - Candy/sweet - tooth
Tuesday 26th October - Disguise/Costume
Wednesday 27th October - Spell/Witchcraft
Thursday 28th October - Hunt/Run
Friday 29th October - Morbid/Shiver
Saturday 30th October - Bite/Teeth
Sunday 31st October - free spot or paired-up project (will be explained at the end)
LEVIHANWEEN PROMPTS - Hange's Notebook
Hange's notebook is a collection of more specific, detailed, and challenging prompts! Go with these if you find them fun/interesting and don't want to think too hard about coming up with a plot! We have 6 for each day (3 of them are NSFW) you are to choose any 1 out of the 6!
(Note: we use they/them for Hange in these prompts just to stay universal but you can use any pronouns you prefer!)
Monday 25th October - Candy/sweet-tooth
1. "You look too grumpy to be the owner of such a bright candy shop," Hange leaned, a teasing smile at their lips. "Shut it, four eyes." Levi drawled, eyes narrowing into annoyed slits.
2. "Maybe it wasn't a good idea to eat that many sweets.." Hange groaned from the toilet. "That's the smartest thing you've said all night," Levi called out from the doorway.
3. "Let's take the bikes. If we start early, we can reach the houses with the big candy bars before it gets too dark."
NSFW
4. "Someone is stealing my candy." "I thought you didn't like sweet things." "Shut up, let me smell your breath."
5. "Levi, I challenge you to a candy collecting competition. Whoever collects most candies wins...
Tuesday 26th October - Disguise/Costume
1. "That's a great grim reaper costume." "It isn't a costume." "Today is Halloween, right?"
"No," Levi narrows his eyes, "You are dying."
2. "Levi, please you gotta help me with this. Miche bailed out at the last moment and I need a partner or I'm screwed." Levi glared at the pink bunny suit that Hange was trying to hand over to him. "Like hell, four-eyes."
3 ."Hey guys, welcome back to my channel where today I'll be trying on sexy Halloween costumes in front of my partner." Hange proceeds to walk out into the living room, vlog camera in hand, wearing a sexy Bigfoot costume. "Four eyes, what the fuck?"
NSFW
4. "Stop moving and let me take your measurements." Levi griped, nudging Hange's thighs apart.
"It tickles-" Hange snickered.
5. Levi had a temporary lapse of judgment when agreeing to participate in that stupid bet Hange came up with. Now here he was, squeezed into a sexy nurse outfit. "This is stupid.." "I don't know Levi...I think I may be coming down with something." Hange teased while fanning their face.
6. There's a monster hiding under Hange's bed.... but it's not as bad as you think.
Wednesday 27th October - Spell/Witchcraft
1. "Turn me back, shitty four-eyes!" Levi hissed, fur sticking up on end as he glared murderously up at them. Hange tried their best to keep a straight face, "Oh Levi... you make such a cute cat!"
2. "I am going to put an end to that spell." "Don't be stupid, you could die!" "If I don't, you will. And I sure as hell am not having that."
3. There is a mouse chewing at Levi's shoes. It's Hange.
NSFW
4. Hange accidentally drank the love portion she was trying to experiment on and now Levi has to deal with her for the whole night
5. "There's-There's something wrong with the Captain," Moblit panted as he approached Erwin and Hange. "He has been acting very odd."
"Since when did this happen?" Erwin asked.
"Since the morning tea time."
"Wait, did he drink some of the concoction of herbs brewing in the kitchen?"
"...Wasn't that tea?"
"Erwin, Moblit... I think I know what's happening here."
6. "Magic." "Magic?" Levi questioned, breath hitching as Hange dragged a hand up his bare arm. "Yes, magic." They replied, lips dragging up into a sultry smirk. "Let me change your life, short stuff."
Thursday 28th October - Hunt/Run
1. Levi’s a werewolf with a bounty on his head and Hange’s a charming supernatural bounty hunter on a mission to catch him.
2. Hange walked ahead of him, taking time with each step while waving the flashlight around the dark space around them. Something creaked behind them and Hange turned the light over Levi’s shoulder.“Levi…” Hange mumbled, eyes widening.
“What?”
“Run.”
3. Hange is a scientist who wants to research centaurs and captures Levi (who is a centaur) but her rival scientist Zeke has something up his sleeve.
4. Levi angled the blade closer to Hange's neck. "I've spent years trying to hunt you down, and do you think I'll let you go so easily?"
NSFW
5. Levi and Hange panted in the dark, trying to catch their breath. Now that they were safe, Levi couldn't help but notice their close proximity, and the fact that he could feel the heat radiating from her skin.
6. Hange hid in Levi's bathroom, a place where he would never expect her to be. Because if Levi found her, she was so screwed.
Friday 29th October - Morbid/Shiver
1. Strange things usually did happen during the night of hallows eve, what Hange didn’t expect was there to be a killer in the loose. The only thing they worried about was finding Levi and getting somewhere safe.
2. When he wakes, it’s cold. White puffs condensed in the air around him with every breath. He was wet too, and vaguely remembered the ache in his lungs when he drowned.
“Are you dead too?”
Levi whirled around to meet the gaze of another child around his age, doe brown eyes twinkling slightly at the prospect of making a new friend.
“I’m Hange.”
3. Our goddess/God was kind, benevolent, and perfect in every way. They protected us.” The priest looks to Levi who stands before him, holding a weapon stained with divine blood. Then he asks, “Why did you kill them?”
NSFW
4. When Hange dies, they wake up in a fiery place. It is hell. It doesn’t make sense, they have been good their whole life. When they ask the demon why, he sounds annoyed, “You are not being punished, four eyes.”
“You are the punishment.”
5. “Ack! Levi no, that’s gross!” Hange shrieked, kicking the heel of their foot against his shoulder. Levi leaned back a bit and continued to lick his fingers clean. “You’re the one in bed with a corpse.” He taunted in return.
6. Levi was positive that he was the only one in the room. So why did he feel a finger stroke his spine?
Saturday 30th October - Bite/Teeth
1. As Levi and Hange stood near the railing of the port, looking at the ships entering Marley, Hange extended their ice cream to him. "Wanna take a bite?"
2. Levi’s throat visibly worked at the sight of Hange’s exposed neck. Their skin held a tanned, olive complexion, taunting him. His dry, cracked lips parted, tongue swiping over one of his pointed fangs.
Then Hange turned their head to blink at him with oblivious eyes and flashed him a grin.
3. “Ow! It bit me.” Hange cried out, pulling their hand back with a pout.
“I told you, four eyes.” Levi scolded as he to their hand to observe the blood that began to bead on their finger.
Without thinking, he stuck their finger into his mouth and sucked on it. Hange jumped, gaping at him.
When he noticed their expression, he quickly pulled their finger out with an audible pop, leaving Hange a flushed, stammering mess.
NSFW
1. Hange loses a dare and now they have to convince the Levi Ackerman to give them a hickey.
2. Hange fixed their piercing brown eyes on him. "Do you ever find something so impossibly cute that you just want to... I don't know, bite it?"
3. Hange takes a bite of the wrong dessert.
---
FAQ
1. Do I have to stick to either Levi's list or Hange's notebook for the entire week?
Ans. No, you don't! You can alternate between the two, choosing prompts from each section for different days, depending on your mood. If you feel like writing something spicy, go for nsfw! It all depends on you!
2. Is there any word limit? Do I have to write only drabbles for this week?
Ans. Nope! There is no word limit! Everything from a 200-word drabble to a 15k one-shot is welcome!
3. Do I have to tag your account when I post my work?
Ans. Yes, please do so! When you post your work, please mention the prompt you have chosen and tag our account (@levihan-drabbles) or use the hashtag #levihanween2021 so we can find it and reblog it! We also have a year-end project where we compile all the works we ever received in the drabble weeks in a portfolio!
4. What if I can't post something each day?
Ans. That's completely fine! We want you to have fun, not feel pressured. You can post your work at your own pace, and take more days if you wish to. Just make sure to mention the prompt in your work so we can organize it accordingly!
If you have any other questions, please feel free to send them in our ask box or message us privately! We will reach you asap!
⊕ Sunday - free spot/paired up project
On 31st October, Sunday, we give a free spot, so write whatever speaks to you! However, we also have another project planned for the day and I am very excited to talk about it!
On our discord, we started a program called 'creative partners' and it received a lot of positive feedback and therefore, we will be implementing a part of it in the drabble week. Note that this is completely optional and you will have to fill out a form to participate in this.

Levihan Week 2021
Day two: Confessions
Summary: Confessions are to be made in the right place, in the right time.
"Confessions are to be made in the right place, in the right time."
It was an advice that Erwin once gave him, during one of the rare instances when the late Commander allowed himself to shrug off his heavy duty and act like a normal human.
Back then, Levi didn't understand the meaning of his words, didn't realize how this philosophical remark could be related to his question about “that red-haired lady that visited our barracks with Dawk today”.
But time went on, and the words refused to leave Levi's mind. Watching his fellow scouts, his friends and subordinates, he couldn't help but remember Erwin's wisdom.
Confessions are to be made in the right place, in the right time
The more Levi thought about it, the more he started to believe that it was a universal truth. Blurt out the wrong thing to the wrong person or in the wrong time, and you create a misunderstanding, tension or even a conflict.
Blurt out the right thing to the right person but in the wrong time, and you can very well destroy the relationship that was so treasured.
Levi saw examples of this everywhere - drunken soldiers slurring the admission of their love to their equally drunken comrades, heavily injured soldiers whispering the words of love on the verge of death, forever breaking the heart of the subject of their affections, angry and tired soldiers screaming out those dangerous three little words in the moments of frustration and resentment.
Love made people stupid, it made people reckless. It was dangerous and unwelcome in their line of work. He couldn't allow his heart to grow attached to someone else, couldn't let his eyes wander in the search of them during battles, couldn't let someone else's voice and laugh distract him from his duties.
Levi scoffed at the soldiers who waxed poetic about love, he rolled his eyes at the displays of affection, he pitied the fools who dedicated their hearts not to the indestructible idea of humanity and its future, but to a single, mortal person.
And then, out of nowhere, in the midst of battles, losses and rare moments of peace, he himself became that very same fool. During battles, his eyes searched for the shrieking idiot, his heartbeat slowing down only after he saw them alive and well. During late evenings and sleepless nights, he sat in the stuffy, dusty laboratory, listening to unending ramblings about titans, the outside world and the hopes of bright future.
He was more focused with them by his side. He slept better when they were curled up around him. Even his food was more delicious when they shared it with him, shamelessly stealing bits of his dinner.
It wasn't love, Levi had tried to assure himself. Love was dangerous and stupid, love was making people weak. But this— this bond, this comradery, this friendship, it wasn't making him weak. It was making him stronger, it was making him fight even harder, to ensure that this hell would end with both of them still alive. This bond, it was making him feel so... happy.
Love made people do stupid things when their other half was injured or in danger. But Levi's person, they were strong. Almost as skilled as was he, and twice as smart.
On the battlefield, they were quick and graceful, invisible, they did not make him worried. Whatever danger they were facing, they always managed to defeat it.
But then, then Kenny came back into his life and then they went after him straight into that fucking cave, and Levi's heart had stopped, it almost crushed when he heard their scream and saw them fall.
And blood, there was so much blood on their shirt, in front of his eyes. And that's when Levi realized - he became attached, he fell in love.
Confessions are to be made in the right place, in the right time
It was the first time he remembered these words in a very long time. He thought he would never need this advice. But that night, when they returned from that cave, when Levi stayed by their side, watching them hiss and wince as doctors bandaged their injured shoulder, he almost blurted it all out. Scared out of his mind, he wanted to grab their face and scream at them how he almost lost his shit during the fight, how even the thought of losing them was making him absolutely terrified. He wanted to press their forehead against his and whisper, so quietly than only two of them would hear, how much he loved them.
But they had a battle waiting for them first thing in the morning. Both of them were exhausted, both of them had too much on their minds. It wasn't the right time and it wasn’t the right place.
So he simply gripped their healthy hand and said, "You looked like a fucking amateur back there, four-eyes. Try to focus next time, alright?"
The answering laughter was quiet, but cheerful. It mended Levi's heart.
Then there was Shiganshina, and Levi's previous fears started to look like an overreaction. He thought he was afraid before, he thought he was close to losing them before, but last time, he could at least see them twitch and groan out in pain, he was somewhat comforted by the knowledge that there were people looking over them.
But now, now, there was no one. There was an explosion, a big, thundering explosion, and after it, there was nothing, nothing at all.
And Levi— Levi couldn't go there and check if someone was still alive. He couldn't even stop and make sense of what he was feeling. Everything was moving too quickly, and he could only follow that swift flow, trying his best not to get drown in it.
And, as he continued moving, never faltering, his eyes were wet - with sweat, with blood, with tears - Levi couldn't spare a second to wipe all of it. He could only continue marching forward.
Confessions are to be made in the right place, in the right time
It wasn't the right place, certainly not the right time, but his desperate, relieved "Hange!" could probably count as a confession. It certainly disclosed the feelings that otherwise he would never let out.
But the current kept moving forward, and both of them were struggling to keep their head afloat. There was no time for words of love, no time for being stupid and reckless.
After the utter disaster that was Shiganshina, they returned home, and the place was right, but the time wasn't, as both of them were still dealing with the losses they've endured. Dumping even more revelations onto them seemed unwise, cruel even, so Levi stayed silent, remained at their side, loyal and faithful.
When they finally arrived at the sea, it seemed like the place was right, and the time was right. And as Hange dragged him from one end of the beach to the other, shoving seashell after seashell into his face, Levi even prepared a romantic, touching speech, the kind of soft confession that his love deserved. Something along the lines, "you're more precious than the sea in front of me".
But that peaceful day was over before he could master the courage to let the truth out in the open.
And after that, after that, the time and the place were never quite right. He could not confess in the midst of thousands official meetings, strategy planning and war councils. He couldn't confess when they had to meet with the Marley volunteers, he couldn't confess when they went to explore Marley itself.
He couldn't confess before they went to retrieve Eren's stupid ass. Although, he wanted to, desperately so. But when he grabbed their shoulder before they boarded the airship, he could only tell them, "Don't die. I'd hate to be in charge of this circus."
He didn't know if his true meaning was clear enough, if his voice was tight enough to translate his curt words into their intended point.
Don't leave me alone. I don't know if I can do this without you.
It only went downhill from that. He had no time to speak with them after they came home, he had no time before he went to the forest with Zeke, the place and the time just weren't right.
When Zeke had escaped, when the explosion had almost killed him, Levi thought that he had lost his chance. He had hesitated for too long, and the moment was lost forever. But the explosion didn't kill him, Hange saved him.
And this time, the place was right, it was perfect, a quiet, dark forest where nothing and no one could get to them.
Maybe, the two of us just should live here together. Right, Levi?
He wanted to say yes, wanted to scream "let's leave this fucking hell behind and grow old together". He wanted bury his face in their neck and whisper "I love you, more than anything".
But he didn't.
The place was right, but the time wasn't.
The place, the time, they were never right.
After they got out of the forest, things were spending up and up, leaving Levi behind and unable to catch up. He was always at the back, watching but not doing anything, too weak to even talk. And they were at the front, leading everyone towards their noble goal.
As he watched them move forward, leaving him to fight the Yeagerists, discussing plans with their allies, as he watched them slip through his fingers like a morning fog, those words were at the tip of his tongue, ready to spill out.
But Hange never stopped, they had no time to hear him out.
And then, Hange finally stopped. Then they decided to become the one that was going to be left behind. And in the process, they left behind Levi.
He thought about it so much, for so long, he was carrying these feelings for almost a decade. But he never figured out just what words to use to explain the matters of his heart.
Confessions are to be made in the right place, in the right time
He was so focused on these words that he forgot about the most important thing. Confession had to be done right as well. But he had no time to ponder and search his mind for the fitting words. He had no time, Hange had no time, and in that last moment, when his heart was breaking and his mind kept chanting "please, don't leave me, not you, please, not you", the only thing he could get out was, "Dedicate your heart."
The confession was clumsy, too roundabout, but his feelings probably were clear enough. He hoped so, at least.
Before they went, before they left him alone, Levi wanted them to know, wanted them to remember just how loved they were.
As he sat in that plane, his mind going crazy with grief, he remembered the words spoken to him in the middle of the night, by a man who refused to feel the pain of loss, who shut himself away from affection and love.
Confessions are to be made in the right place, in the right time
Perhaps, Erwin was wrong in that regard, Levi realized. Perhaps, there was no such thing as right place and right time. There could only be right person.
And Levi had just lost his.

Forever Fifteen
Levihan | Part I of Good Bones | written for Levihan Week 2021- Memory (day 6)
It’s on Ao3! https://archiveofourown.org/works/33635872
“Hello stranger…”
Hanji doesn’t have to look behind her to know who it is. Already, she’s pulling a cigarette case from the inner pocket of her jacket. She holds one out to her side, and with a brush of cold fingers against hers, it’s gone. Her heart beats out of her chest.
Oh be still! We’ve been through this before! This should be as mundane as- doing the laundry.
She turns to face him, scanning him from his nice dress shoes to the way his hair is slicked back, an exaggerated simper on her face.
“What’s a handsome stranger like you doing in a place like this?”
He scoffs. “The party’s not over yet…”
“I know…” she replies, tilting her head to get a better look at her company. “I’m just watching…”
He follows her gaze to the courtyard below the balconies, to where Jean is sitting with Mikasa. Just- talking.
“Happened right under our noses…” Hanji chuckles. Oh right… she mutters when Levi gestures for the light. There’s a little fumbling because of Hanji’s penchant for pockets, but she finds the box of matches eventually. She strikes one and holds it close to Levi. A bright little light that burns embers into the greys of his eyes. The dark circles under his eyes have made a permanent home under his skin, and there are now lines carved into the shadows. When did those get there?
As always, Levi is the first to look away.
“You wouldn’t happen to have anything to do with that would you?” He raises a brow.
Jean is now laughing at something. Levi clicks his tongue in annoyance. In the many years he has known these damned kids, he hasn’t once laughed at anything Mikasa has to say. Jean must be a fool then. Jean is a fool because he listens too well to Hanji. Listens when she tells him he should go for it if that’s what he wants. Tell her a good pickup line, swap a few jokes, share a little fruitcake. Easy.
Hanji gasps dramatically, “as Commander of the Survey Corps, I would like to remind you that I am well aware of the policy against fraternisation!”
“That never stopped you…” Levi answers. But oh it has. The people who knew them as lovers are now dust. And now the rumours speak for them, past prefixed to lovers as a way to explain the familiarity, as a way to grow the distance.
Oh it has stopped them.
“Never stopped you either… If only they knew the great Captain Levi wrote crazy ol’ Hanji Zoë a love letter in his youth…” Hanji chuckles, a little too brave so it must be the alcohol, because she feels anything but brave lately. Her laughter is a little too bright for the night. A little too beautiful and familiar that it makes Levi smile. There’s a spray of pink on his cheekbones. The thought of people knowing the details is mortifying to say the least. But no one will know. This secret will be buried in a shared grave. A cosy little grave that gets a little damp in the summer. But they’ll brave the heat. Good things happen in the sun. Good for the linens too. Just- not good enough to untether the smell of Hanji’s skin from the fabric of his sheets.
“Do you remember what was in that letter?” She continues.
He doesn’t look at her now. His gaze is fixed on Jean’s fidgeting and he thinks of his own attempts at romance. His own little love story that blossomed beautifully and died tragically as they grew older. When they were put in charge for lives outside their own. When Erwin had named Hanji the next in line for the cursed role of Commander. One last night with her. One kiss and a handshake and a- hello stranger, my name is Hanji Zoë.
Levi. He had replied, just Levi.
He remembers Pyxis’ smug little “maybe your boyfriend can help with the mission” and Hanji’s vacuous, unthinking “oh he’s not my boyfriend anymore…”. The look on Pyxis’ face had been one for the books- a genuine surprise from coming by two pieces of information. So they are exes. The rumours were true. Menacing Levi and Kooky Zoë. Levi had launched a kick at Hanji’s shin under the table. Never in Levi’s life had he wished so much for the earth to swallow him whole.
“No…”
He says. It’s not lying if she knows what he really means. If she can tell, between each drag of her cigarette, what he’s thinking.
And she can. Oh she can.
He lets the memory dance across his eyes. That night at the pub, two kids puffing out their chests so they wouldn’t rouse suspicions (not that people care much in the Underground), listening to the men sing songs about love. Oh what Levi would give be young again. To look at Hanji, really look at her for the first time and have his mind play static on loop. To realise that for the rest of his life he’ll only be mesmerised by her.
She chuckles. Another drag of her cigarette, two taps to watch the ash drip. A wink.
“We must be getting old then, Levi…” She says, “in a few years we’ll be a couple of old prunes, you and I…”
Levi smiles at her. He’s never really thought about the mechanics of growing old. But he thinks the image is nice. Of Hanji tracing pruny fingers along the length of his pruny skin where the crescent scars sit in the leather of his skin. And he’ll remind her of the time when they kids, because that’s what old couples do right? Tease each other endlessly, talk about the ambiguity of the good old days, reminisce over long walks? Levi wants the complete works. He laughs to himself, a private little joke that simmers to a murmur-
Four-eyed prune…
It’s a little later when Hanji decides maybe it’s time to stop eavesdropping and get back to the party. The musicians announce the last dance of the night. The trumpets trail after the saxophone and the sound is something grand. And Hanji asks Levi if he wants to dance, because she’s a sucker for romantics, even though she’ll never admit it. And she knows Levi is too. And Hanji thinks life must still be pretty sweet if she’s dancing with her ex lover with a sea of memories between them and the abject refusal to explicate the boundaries of exes. Because it’s hard to forget. Because it’s hard to wash your lover’s scent from your sheets. No matter how hard you scrub, no matter how much the sunlight eats at the fabric and bleaches it. So much so that Hanji thinks it’s all in her head. The smell of his skin, the taste of cigarettes on his tongue- he only smokes with her, only with her- the ghost of his breath against the shell of her ear.
And Levi’s heart is beating out his chest.
Oh be still! We’ve been through worse! We scrubbed at the sheets until our fingers were raw and pruny, remember?
But with Hanji it’s hard to catch a break. He knows. He’s dealt with this for so long that he doesn’t even flinch when she tells him-
“You’re my best friend, Levi…”
But she recognises all the signs. The slight twitch of the corner of his lips, the creasing of the skin between his brows, the sadness in his eyes so bright that she has to avert her gaze.
“Do you tell all the boys that when you dance with them?”
He answers. And she hears the rhythmic grate of the sheets against the washing board.
Forgetting is hard.
“I don’t dance with other boys…” She replies, channeling Hanji Zoë at fifteen- was it sixteen? Seventeen? Eighteen maybe? Hanji Zoë who would sneak into the boy’s barracks to make out with her boyfriend in the dead of night and scurry back under the sheets before anyone found out. “You know I like you the most…”
“Good…”
He says. And he’s Levi- a few years older than she had been, a little too curt, a little too much misplaced possessiveness, thinking to himself that maybe love isn’t so icky and banal. Thinking maybe this is what his mother had promised him. This is all that’s beautiful.
He leans his chin against her shoulder, wrestling against the caution thrown at his beating heart.
Let them talk. Let them say we were lovers in a past life. Because that’s all we are.
Hanji presses her temple against his. The familiarity is jarring in all the ways a stain is. Bright mustard yellow against white cotton, evidence of a split second stupid decision to eat on the duvet. This is a cumulation of mustard moments then- a stain so big the entire world turns yellow.
“I like you the most too…” Levi says, voice low like this is a secret. Like as if the whole of Paradis Island doesn’t already know.
Hanji chuckles, and the vibration that spreads from her bones to his makes him blush. He knocks his temple against hers. Stupid Hanji. Stupid mustard stain.
“Liar…” she laughs. The word is a breath that caresses his cheek. But she knows him- this boy Erwin collected from the underground city. He got under her skin and she proceeds to make it her job to get under his. She had greeted him with scars on his forearm and in return, she walked away with a bruised eye, a broken nose, and an epiphany. And in the years after- the good years- they do what every teenager would do-
fuck around and fall in love.
Levi pulls apart, and in that moment, his lips brush against her neck- fleeting casualness befitting a hey big idiot. It’s the hottest day in the history of mankind but I’ll brave the stickiness to kiss your sweaty neck. Befitting a lifelong stain of a crush on a stain of a human being that will never quite go away.
It’s hard to forget.
Hanji watches as Jean crosses the hall back to where Connie and Sasha are. A sheepish grin plastered on a bright red face. The two tease him endlessly and as always, Jean swats them away, trying to maintain his cool. Hanji knows nothing really happened, but his reaction can only mean hopeful possibility. She smiles.
“Hey, do you think we would’ve worked out?”
Hanji asks when they’re walking back to the barracks, her jacket concealing a few bottles of alcohol. The other bottles have found their way to Levi’s reluctant hands. They’ve been through this before. It’s okay now. After all, comfort is a stained duvet. Soon, she’ll have to bid him farewell with a goodnight, stranger. But for now, Levi answers without looking at her.
“Yeah…” he replies, matter of fact, “we’ve got good bones…”
Oh be still! Hanji feels betrayed that her heart- a wretched thing so broken- still beats the same for him- this beautiful stain of a human being. This moment is living, breathing nostalgia. What had they been before one another? Menacing Levi and Kooky Zoë. How could anything bad ever happen to them. She grins at him.
“The best…”

Title: Do you love daddy?
Summary:
“Do you love daddy?” Luke repeated. His eyes were wide, he was probably reading into her soul.
Hange didn’t want to give him too easy of a time mind reading. “Of course I do,” she said.
“How come you never tell him you love him?”
Luke asks Hange a question and Hange reflects on it.
Written for Levihan Week 2021, Day 2: Confessions
Link: AO3
Notes:
Levihan Week Day 2 Prompt: Confessions, organized by @levihanweek.
I edited this half asleep to meet my own internal deadline for day 2. I hope it still suffices. Feedback is very much appreciated!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
There was a small forest near their house. In fact, Hange had decided on their permanent home mainly for its proximity from the park.
In the middle of the park was a small, small forest. But to Hange, it was ginormous. Or at least, what you would consider ginormous in an urban setting. It held adventure. It held mystery. It held some breathtaking liberation, something withheld from her during her years as a commander.
That particular weekend was a lazy weekend. It was just her and her son. For some parent-child bonding, Hange was ready to get lost in the forest. Before she could even dive deeper though, reality rammed into her in such an abrupt, yet such gentle and adorable manner. “Do you love daddy?” Luke asked.
With those words alone, Hange could almost hear the curiosity burning inside him. She kept her eyes trained ahead, focusing on the forest. The woods were small, the forest was only large enough for a few small kids to play some hybrid between tag and hide-and-seek. The trees were of a safe size, some convenient shape that framed their surroundings.
It was a beautiful view, something she didn’t see often, especially when cooped up in the office forty hours a week. She decided to enjoy it and let whatever answer to that question come organically.
Do I love Levi?
The forest held more than adventure. It held something silent and invisible. Along the way, she had suddenly become aware of the breathing of her son, the rustle of the leaves. He was only inches away from her. In surprise, she turned back to her son while attempting to conceal the discomfort. She willed herself to keep her chin up, her eyes a reasonable size and her breathing very much even.
“Do you love daddy?” The kid repeated, his eyes wide. He could probably read into her soul and she didn’t want to give him too easy of a time mind reading.
“Of course I do,” Hange said.
“How come you never tell him you love him?”
“I do.”
“Corbin says his parents tell each other they love each other everyday,” Luke said.
Corbin… Was that a friend at school? It was nothing more than a passing thought. If it demanded to be something else, Hange didn’t notice, her thoughts had embedded themselves into something a little more pressing. “Luke, you don’t think I love daddy?” she challenged.
The young boy cocked his head to one side and shrugged. “You don’t tell daddy you love him…”
Hange could have sworn she did. She found herself racking her memories for some hint to an answer, some hint to reassurance that would suffice for her son.
When Hange indulged that nostalgia, the trees blurred for a second, the greens extended beyond the frames of her view. The sky that wiggled themselves through the canopy as streams of light disappeared for just a second.
Why don’t we just live here together? They echoed inside her and with it, they sent a rush of confidence through her. “I love him.” She had enough confidence to introduce it as if it were a well thought out proposition. She turned to his son.
Luke narrowed his eyes. Through the years, he was starting to look more and more like his father. If Luke expressed emotions anything like his father, Hange could be certain, it was doubt written all over his face.
Luke didn’t believe her? Hange was in no mood though for a lecture. She was in no mood for a moment of introspection, especially when there were still lichens and moss around her she wanted to identify. “Let’s talk about that when we get home.”
The conversation was over. Hange walked ahead then into the forest and tabled that problem for later.
***
Children never forget.
Hange scolded herself for underestimating the boy and to add insult to injury, overestimating herself. She wasn’t at all ready for the talk, especially not in front of Levi. She had just indulged that bad habit of hers, that tendency to assume that a five year old would forget what the hell they had just said.
“Do you love each other?” Luke had asked. It came too out of nowhere, over half finished plates of homemade pasta and untouched bowls of soup.
Levi coughed violently then dropped his spoon. One hand flew to his mouth. “What the fuck.” It came out like a mumble, a second later, concealed by one smooth deep breath.
Hange was frozen, too frozen to even tell what had been her first reaction.
Levi composed himself quickly. “Why are you asking that?”
Hange had known him long enough to know though that he was raring to insert some curse into that query. “Of course we do” Her response was automatic. Still she found herself, flashing Levi a look.
He returned it with something unreadable, seemingly uninterested but with a sliver of surprise.
“How come you never tell each other ‘I love you?’” Luke asked.
“We do,” Levi said.
For a second, Hange was relieved. At least they were still in the same wavelength.
“When?” Luke asked.
“Sometimes… when you’re asleep,” Hange said. Once again, those words had been automatic, impulsive. They were a product of Hange's inability to process such complex emotions, especially with a five year old of all things.
It was a mistake, an utterly stupid mistake. How the hell Hange hadn’t seen through it, it was a mystery. Really though, five year olds were very unpredictable creatures.
Luke wasn’t sleeping that night and he was doing a shitty job pretending he was asleep. Their apartment wasn’t too small but the walls were thin enough that everything just went bump, sometimes the doors went creak.
Overcompensating maybe for her stupid move, Hange decided to just perk her ears up. listen closely and attempt to make sense of the sounds. A few reiterations later, Hange figured it out. Luke was walking back and forth from the bed to the door and he wasn’t doing such a good job. He bumped, he creaked, sometimes he whispered.
Eventually, Hange would have to come in and put him to bed herself.
Still, that could wait. “Levi. You wanna go back to bed?” Hange said, just loud enough for the sound to travel to the open kitchen. Levi was once again reorganizing the cupboard.
Levi looked back at her, his eyes sleepy and his expression just a little dumb. It was late at night and she couldn’t really blame him for his utter obliviousness and his apathy over the whole fiasco. He shifted his eyes towards the partially open bedroom door for a second, then he met Hange’s gaze. He made his way the few feet to the sofa. “Do you plan on doing anything about… that?” He settled himself on the sofa next to Hange and looked at her expectantly.
“He’s gonna fall asleep eventually.”
“I know the kid. If you don’t talk to him about this, he’s not gonna sleep,” Levi said.
“Talk to him about…” Hange was feigning obliviousness.
It didn’t seem to work with Levi though. “That love thing, whatever that is. I don’t know what even happened between the two of you.” Levi leaned back on the sofa. “But I want my son to get a good night’s sleep.
Hange sighed. “While we were playing in the park, he asked if I loved ‘daddy.’”
Levi turned to her, a deadpan expression on his face. “Do you love me then?”
Comically Deadpan. Hange couldn’t even make sense of it herself, the question, the reaction had come so abruptly, so unexpectedly that Hange had to look away for some space and peace, enough at least for her to come up with some sorry excuse of a response.
“Why? What’s so funny?” Levi pressed.
The more he asked, the harder it would be to answer. And Hange didn’t want to make a big deal of it too late at night. The wry grin on her face was all she could muster. “Sorry, it just came out of nowhere--- What the hell, why are you asking it like this, all of a sudden.”
“Because Luke was asking?” Levi answered matter-of-factly. Hange was starting to wonder, was she making a big deal out of those three simple words?
“There must have been a reason right? A reason we never really said those words...”
“Why don’t you?” Levi asked.
“It feels….” I love you. She echoed it then she moved her lips slightly, just enough to feel for herself how it should have felt to say it out loud. “Excessive?”
“Does it?”
“Well… People say it all the time but then they cheat on each other, they abandon each other, they fight and it just seems like… something people say to be dramatic.”
“Unless you mean it right?” Levi suggested.
“What if--- I just wanna prove it. I wanna earn and support the family. I wanna spend time with you and Luke and I wanna just commit to making the relationship work. I don’t wanna add any unnecessary verbosities to it.”
“Would it hurt to say it?” Levi asked.
“It feels tacky,” Hange admitted.
“Even for your son?”
Hange sensed the slyness, the amusement in Levi’s voice. The war freak in her wanted some retribution. Her mouth went faster. “Do you love me?”
Levi turned a beet red, a rare scene particularly since they had started living together. And before Hange could even confirm that it hadn’t been some trick of the light, he looked away.
Hange craned her neck, ready to take one peek.
Levi couldn’t look away forever. “Do I really have to answer that?”
“Why? What are you so scared of?” Hange didn’t bother to stifle the smile. She snuck it into her words instead as a soft chuckle. “You okay?”
Levi spun around, his head bent down. “You’re right. It sounds tacky.” He put his hand out, balled it into a fist and pressed it to her chest. “Other words just sound better.”
The hand was warm, familiar and with one gesture, Hange felt secure. “Dedicate your heart? So you said that because you love me?”
“I thought I was going to lose you.”
“I thought I was going to lose you too,” Hange admitted. “That’s why I invited you to live in the forest with me.”
“Back then, did you…” Levi raised his brows expectantly.
Love me? Hange took the risk. “Of course.”
“Then why did you stop yourself from saying it?” Levi averted his gaze. He hung his head back and stared up at the ceiling.
“It’s excessive, melodramatic,” Hange admitted. “Why put ourselves to that drama in the middle of the war?”
“But you still invited me to live with you in the forest.”
“Other words just sound better,” Hange said. She mirrored Levi’s tone of a while ago. She hovered her hand over his, and propped it.
Levi looked up once again. Their eyes met and once again, they connected. Like every other time before and Hange was looking back at those other words again.
“Other words just sounded better then.” Right, circumstances were different then. There were words that had just been off limits, too melodramatic, especially in the middle of the war.
The war was over. They were in their own house. They were basking in the peace of post war Paradis.
It could have been a force of habit that the words kept themselves in, even when Hange had opened her mouth to speak. “I love you,” she whispered. The words were heavy, they were looming and somehow when she let them free, some other tension she dind’t even know existed had broken free from inside her. She let out a laugh, too loud for too late at night. “I love you,” she said again, much louder that time.
“Me too,” Levi said. “I love you too.” His response was smooth, natural and not at all hesitant and Hange wondered how long he had kept it in or if he had ever even rehearsed it.
She grinned, gripped his hand harder and let out a long exhale. They were silent for a few seconds and in the silence, the thumps, the thuds were deafeningly loud. Hange studied Levi’s expression, the subtle smile that climbed up his lips.
There was another thud, a few more bumps and suddenly it was silent. On the way to their bedroom, Hange snuck a glance at the partially open door, looking at the lump under the bed, the movements even, the breathing peaceful.
Luke had fallen asleep. For Levi or Luke, or even for herself, Hange made one last gesture. “I love you.” She bent forward, planting a kiss on Levi’s forehead. “Sorry if it’s five years late.”
