If you don't have plans tonight, make some. Levi sends the text to Beau an hour before he leaves Decades, and then a subsequent follow up of I mean it when he locks eyes with one Kenzie Vaisman on the dance floor. It doesn't matter that he's just your standard white boy, Levi's constantly working on his game. Why else would he have taken secret Saturday salsa classes for eight months several years ago? Or read The Kama Sutra from front to back when he was eighteen? He's no amateur. He only plays to win – no Monday quarterback syndrome here. It's all in the prep work. So when he spots Kenzie looking like, well, Kenzie, he knows what his plan is for the night. Giving a nod to the woman who'd been talking his ear off for some time, he makes his way to the dance floor, white boy hips moving with surprising rhythm as he meets her in the middle, under the flashing lights. "You here with anyone, Kenz?" He's learned that playing coy only works for some women, but Kenzie wasn't some woman. She is the woman tonight. And he doesn't want to waste either of their time.

Levi scoffs, brow raised at her words. “Oh, yeah, totally, the whole concept is archaic,” he replies sarcastically but without much bite. “But I still think I’d survive.” The Sullivan shrugs, ever confident, unless she was some secret ninja or something but he has a sneaking suspicion she’s not. “Actually, it is, I just happen to be exceptionally quick witted,” he jokes, pausing at the corner of the block as cars pass by. “And I own Levi’s. They’re excellent jeans,” he asserts with a grin, snickering at the additional nickname. “Do I?” He’s been told he’s extremely approachable but an open book is new. He doesn’t mind, though, taking it as a compliment as she asks her question. “Mmm, yeah, well, fighting fire is a big one,” he grins with a shrug, “responding to other emergency situations? Cat stuck in a tree…people stuck in an elevator. A mom brought their kid in last week – got his arm stuck in a vase. We’re kinda the jack-of-all-trades of emergency services.”

It might be a more comprehensive answer than she’s looking for but he’s happy to talk about his work. He’s never gotten bored of it. “Me and my brother both do it actually. Though, if you ever met him, you’d know who’s better at their job.” Despite his laugh at his brother’s expense, Levi does think Beau is probably better at his job – more focused and intense, but that was Beau every day. “What’s wrong with jogging?” He says with mock-offense, glancing down at his attire and then back at her, “gets the heart rate up, improves cardiovascular endurance, works up your appetite…what’s not to like?” It’s not for everyone but Levi feels infinitely more awake and energized when he’s on one. Maybe he should get Beau on his next one – get his brother out of the Tammie slump. “Oh, cool, big family then? You guys close?” As they continue walking, he gestures around them with a disbelieving face. “Of course I do. I’m probably the best tour guide a person can have. See – there’s the library.” 

Rory let out a genuine laugh then, looking to him with a furrowed brow but clear amusement on her features. "Oh come on, not even that much. Plus the whole size matters thing is kinda old now." she chuckled but it seemed she had met her match when it came to quick wit, rolling her eyes at his cocky response. "Guess that's not the first time you've had to defend your name, huh?" she asked, her tone was light and playful and she was glad to have some company for the walk. Giving a nod of approval, clear inquisitiveness was on her tongue then. "Oh cool...so lemme ask...you seem like a pretty open book, Jorts. What is the day to day life as a firefighter because you know, I don't see fires all that much?" Which she guessed meant he was doing his job right. Readjusting the strap of her tote that kept slipping, Rory laughed. "Well, if it happens I'm sure you'd be able to tell. But I appreciate the heads up, I'll try not to fall in love with a man who...jogs." she gestured to his attire. Just you? That question made her nod slower, and she doubted she'd start listing off all the new family members she suddenly had. Despite them, things still felt lonely. "Uh yeah, pretty much. Some half brothers and their kids but just me. It seems good here, like any other city I guess? Unless you know all the places that make it more exciting?"

"Look, if you want to break up with me, just say it." Atle nearly drops his phone.

"What do you think? The Maldives or the Seychelles?" Atle asks Alexander who upon hearing the question looks up confused from his phone. "What do you mean, Maldives or Seychelles?" Atle rolls his eyes and shows his friend his phone screen, where he has a vacation rental site open. "For vacation. Where Lucas and I should go," Atle says as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Alexander shrugs which is not really helpful. "I have been to neither but they both sound boring to me," Alexander says and Atle wonders why he asked Alexander in the first place. He might as well have asked a wall, it might even have made more sense. Of course, Atle should ask Lucas first but they see each other in two days minimum and Atle wants to have this matter settled now. It's always a drag to plan their holidays, with different sponsor meetings and all of that. Especially now that Lucas' is in a whole other delegation.

Therefore Atle sends Lucas a quick text message, reading

i'll call you when I have landed in Finland. we gotta talk.

The check marks nearly instantly turn blue and three dots appear. Atle asks himself if Lucas is glued to his phone. Which he is, Atle knows his boyfriend and his addiction to his phone.

Before Atle can see what Lucas has answered though, it's time for him to board his plane to Finland. Responsible as he is, Atle immediately switches his phone to airplane mode. He is not particularly superstitious, but he has always done it that way and so far he has not crashed in a plane. Lucas is someone who never switches his phone to airplane mode. This always makes Atle a little uneasy when he is flying with his boyfriend. Alexander just rolls his eyes. He knows Atle's habits and has told him, that it doesn't matter, that Atle can also switch to airplane mode when he is on the plane.

The flight is rather short which Atle is thankful for. He already feels tired but he can never sleep on the plane. It doesn't matter if the flight is long or short, he can't even take a power nap. Therefore Atle wishes that the plane would just land and that he could just go to sleep in his hotel room already. It would be perfect if Lucas was already there. The thought of sleeping in his boyfriend's arms makes Atle smile. Lucas will arrive a day later though, so up until then it will just be a fantasy. Besides, they also need to be careful so that nobody catches them. Sure, Atle told his closest friends on the team like Alexander but the majority don't know about their relationship. They suspect it mostly though, as Alexander said. Still, they need to be careful, always slipping into each other's hotel room at night and out just right before dawn. It's getting a bit tiring, Atle has to admit that. This is why he loves spending his vacation with Lucas so much, especially on rather remote islands. There's no one there who knows them and they can just be themselves, enjoying each other's company and warmth.

The flight goes without any turbulences but Atle first can take a deep breath when he's with the other guys on the shuttle that will bring them to the hotel. Flying is always just so stressful for him. Good thing he does it nearly every week for his job. Alexander, who is sitting next to Atle talks about something he wants to gift his girlfriend for their anniversary when Atle remembers he still needs to switch his phone back on. He fumbles in his backpack and pulls out his phone before switching it back on.

He expects a new message from Lucas, telling him he would choose the Maldives. What he doesn't expect are three missed calls and three messages all from Lucas.

Confused Atle looks at his phone. What is Lucas talking about? What did happen? Did something happen to Lucas? Concern makes itself known in Atle's gut. He would like to call Lucas back immediately but he knows that it's not the right time in the shuttle where everyone can hear him. No, Atle wants privacy.

Alexander, who sensed that Atle wasn't listening to him, nudges Atle's shoulder. "Hey, everything okay with you?" Alexander asks and Atle shakes his head. Then he shows Alexander the messages Lucas has sent him. Now Alexander also looks confused. "Has something happened?" Alexander asks and Atle rolls his eyes. "That's what I have been asking myself."

Alexander pats Atle's back. "Don't worry, you know how Lucas can be dramatic. It's probably nothing." Atle says nothing to that, just stares out of the window. He knows his boyfriend, of course he does, but he can't stop feeling concerned. If only the shuttle drive would finally end. It does eventually and Atle tries not to sprint into his hotel room, which he fails miserably. Alexander only laughs quietly as he watches Atle hurry off.

As soon as Atle is in his hotel room, he calls Lucas. It doesn't take three rings for his boyfriend to pick up. "Lucas, is everything okay?" Atle asks breathless and also a bit scared. "I was hoping that you could answer me that," Lucas says as an answer and now Atle is more than confused. What is that supposed to mean? He didn't do anything that would warrant such a question. Lucas was the one who called him.

"Look, if you want to break up with me, just say it." Atle nearly drops his phone. What the hell is Lucas talking about? Breaking up with him? Why would Atle do such a thing? "What the fuck are you talking about? I certainly don't want to break up with you?" Atle hears Lucas scoff at the other side of the phone. "Your text," Lucas says as if that is an explanation.

"I just wanted to ask you where you'd want to go for our summer vacation. But then the plane started and I had to switch to airplane mode," Atle explains slowly, somehow still not understanding how he ended up in this situation. "Atle, who the fuck sends such a message before going on a plane? I thought you were about to end it all! I already cried!" Lucas explains, sounding angry and upset at the same time. Atle closes his eyes. Why is he dealing with that and why does he find Lucas's antics kind of endearing?

"Lucas, baby, listen to me. I would never break up with you over a text message. I'm not an asshole, you should know that. I love you way too much for that," Atle says, trying to sound comforting and sincere, which he is. He could never do such a thing to anyone, least to Lucas.

Atle hears Lucas take a deep breath like he is slowly calming down. "I'm sorry Atle. I shouldn't have guessed such a thing. I don't know what got into me," Lucas whispers and Atle laughs. He's just happy that everything is fine and nothing bad happened. "Don't worry, baby, I'm not angry at you. Now tell me, where do you want to go for our summer vacation? The Maldives or the Seychelles?"

It's quiet on the other side of the line, Lucas thinking about the options. Then, "I don't know, you can decide."

Atle hangs up.

Levi laughs loudly at that, head thrown back as he brings a hand to his chest. "You know what? I'm not even gonna answer that. Your mind is your own worst enemy here, Beau." He shakes his head, taking a sip of his beer with a shrug. At least Levi owns it. Beau, on the other hand, seems content to live in denial. Everyone's entitled to do it but Levi's never seen the point. "Sure it doesn't. Just keep your worry to yourself, yeah? Last thing I need is you getting your ass handed to you. It's a bad look for both of us." Bad raps have a way of rubbing off on those closet to you. Levi snorts at his brother's insistence, "she's great!" He mimics in a higher octave, shaking his head with a laugh. "You're a terrible liar. Bet you haven't even fucked her." He'd thought it was a good idea, mostly because anyone with eyes can see the similarities but it looks like his good deed is going to waste. "I don't do awkward, Beau. Awkward is for people with low self esteem and no confidence." Levi says definitively, waving a hand at Beau's attempt to bait him. "Better overconfident on my own than reliant on other people's approval." He gives his brother a pointed look, blunt as ever with his words. "Besides, the what next makes things exciting. Will we fuck? Won't we?" He waggles a brow before chuckling a little as his focus returns to the fight. "And that has nothing to do with Hunter being an identical twin?" he ribs his brother with a smirk. He could read Beau's mind like a book. He's not sure if it even comes with the twin territory so much as his brother thinking he was subtle when he's the opposite.

Beau snorts, returning the nudge of elbow but more in a motion of trying to swat away his brother than anything affectionate. "Probably the four digit date of your first blowjob." Beau mentions quickly, sipping his beer to hide the grin but grimacing as his imagination can't help but piece together a few things hiding in his brother's phone. "Jesus, it's probably not even in a locked album, right? Just all right there in the camera roll." he laughs loudly, an expression of disgust as he does so. Beau scoffs then, shaking his head in slow vigor and humming noises of disagreement. "No, no. We're not doing that. Me being mindful that they just had a baby, got nothing to do with past or stuck or nothing." he lies through his teeth, to make himself feel better about it all and denounce the accuracy his brother has landed on his feet with. "I have my energy focused! Things with t-Amelia are going fine. She's great." Honestly, she's great. "It's the first not bad idea you've ever had. She's, I mean. She's the first not bad idea." Honestly, she really is great. Beau nods sardonically, raising a brow and laughing slightly about Kenzie. "I mean...Kenzie, man. I'd feel damn awkward having a chance right there and then it gone." he whistles, laying on the embarrassment thick in hopes of goading his brother. "You're the annoying one and over confident one, everyone says so." he adds in quickly, turning to watch the fight and shrugging almost indifferently until his eyes scan over to Tammie and Ryan with an instinctual movement. "I guess I hope JJ wins." For no reason.

Act like you have options," Levi says definitively, handing Beau his bear, "because you actually do," he affirms, nudging his brother and nodding at a woman a few tables away from the bar and then another closer to the stage. Beau was just too stuck on Tammie Jones to see more than a foot in front of him. @secrettyrant

Maybe Levi should've been clearer. As in leave it the fuck alone, Beau, rather than it’s none of your business, man. Because it's clear that Beau's thick fucking skull heard none of his sage wisdom and, if he did, he somehow managed to do the exact opposite. Those are the thoughts running through Levi's head when he hears Ryan shouting Beau's name. He rushes over, the heat of a Cross' anger is as hot as any fire he's put out, and he's mentally cursing his twin's stupidity. But the laws of nature dictate that he can't just let his brother get his ass handed to him, even though a million I told you so's are on the tip of his tongue. "Hey!" he shouts to be heard over Ryan's tirade and he wonders if a Cross has ever calmly talked about anything. "Ryan!" he yells, grabbing his colleague and friend's arm, even if friend is as loose a term as any right about now. He loops an arm beneath Ryan's, hindering his cocked fist before it connects with his brother's stupid bloody face again. Stupid idiot. He's obligated to help him but he also feels the slightest twinge of guilt at the situation Beau's in now. He'd had his suspicions before but this makes it abundantly clear that he'd absorbed all the intelligence and common sense worth having in the womb, and what did Beau get left with? Nada. Poor boy. "C'mon, man, you made your point!" He's practically shouting in Ryan's ear to get him to stop pummeling his brother, but it's like shouting in the face of a storm.

Beau knows he has seconds if he's lucky, but even those tick by slower than he expects them to. He scoffs nervously, eyes pulling away from Ryan as there's a subtle shake of his head. And then a deep sigh. "I was just talking, for Christ sakes." it's a mumble but an agitated one as Beau sets the water bottle down and sinks backwards into his seat. While his brother has the gift of knowing what to say and when to say it, Beau has never been that lucky. His words are laced with some form of contempt in them, a bitterness he can't even help. That's what he tells himself, not willing to admit that he's carried a bitterness towards Ryan for a number of years. When his friend is on his feet, Beau watches him and expects retaliation sooner than it arrives but he still isn't ready when he too is pulled from his seat and shoved harshly. "Ryan! What the fuck?" he shouts, instinct to protect himself kicking in as he returns the shove to keep distance between them. "Think about this for god damn second!" Beau reminds him of what's at stake, a job and a family now. "Do you actually want to know? I don't think you do, don't do this." his hand raises, as if taming something wild because he's seen it. Everyone has. In every Cross. "Just...there's nothing that talking will do, Ry. That's not the talk we need to have."
