The Dublin House on Manhattan’s Upper West Side is celebrating its centennial this year, which is reason enough to support it, especially after the nightmarish year and a half from which it is just emerging. But here’s a more pressing reason: Its 88-year-old neon sign is in desperate need of repair. These are photos from my archive from happier times, when the sign was still (largely) working. Now, this is no ordinary neon sign … this glorious neon harp is perhaps the grandest of them all in NYC, and @sign_of_the_time calls it his favorite in Gotham. The sign was such a big deal in 1933 that Signs of the Times magazine wrote a small article about it the next year, neon expert @rinaldit2 tell us. Tom told the Wall Street Journal that Dublin House made an impression on him as a child: “Dublin House was the first, going past it as a kid and seeing it flashing in the car. Thank God it’s still there. It’s been there since 1933. That one and others that have been around forever are amazing: They’re veterans of the World War II blackout. They seem so ephemeral, so improbable.” Ephemeral and improbable are the right words, so here’s a chance to do something to help make this sign eternal and probable. Neon maven Jeff Friedman of @lettherebeneon has organized a GoFundMe to raise funds for the restoration of this sign, which could take four to six months and will require considerable work. Jeff, fortunately, has what he calls a “secret stock” on vintage neon tubing that will match the colors of the original sign, so this sign couldn’t be in better hands. And if you donate $50 or more, Dublin House will put a free pint of Guinness in one of your hands and a collector’s certificate in the other. Our latest YouTube video: NYC Neon, Smoked Salmon & Guitars is now live on our JamesandKarla channel! In this special extended NYC Neon video, we not only visit a neon shop in TriBeCa, but also visit many independently-owned businesses in the Lower East Side, which feature neon signage created or restored by the same shop.

We start the day with a visit to Let There Be Neon on White Street and have a special guest with us, Josh from @sign_of_the_time on Instagram. We go inside this neon fabrication and design studio, speak with the owner, Jeff Friedman about some of the vintage signs he has both restored, designed and fabricated for iconic New York City mom-and-pop businesses and also get a tour of their front gallery, art, layout, design and fabrication shops and watch tube benders at work.

We then walk to Russ & Daughters Appetizers Shop on East Houston Street, where we look at their beautifully restored vintage neon sign and go inside this iconic appetizing shop to see the wide variety of smoked salmon, lox, herring, caviar, breads, nuts and fruits they sell. We also watch carefully as Herman Vargas, the long-time manager at the shop lovingly creates the perfect bagel, smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato and onion sandwich for us, which we eat outside.

After having our amazing smoked salmon bagel sandwich, we walk to Rivington Guitars on East 4th Street, where we look at all of the neon signage that Let There Be Neon created for the shop. We also go inside Rivington Guitars where we not only have a chance to see their vintage electric guitar inventory but also speak with the owner, Howie Statland, who also plays some of his favorite guitars for us and our dog Hudson. We take a short walk with Howie Statland to his Rivington Guitars Unplugged Acoustic store just a few doors down on East 4th Street and look at the neon signage Let There Be Neon also created for this shop and go inside to see Howie's extensive vintage acoustic guitar inventory.

We then take a stroll down Orchard Street to Jimmy Webb's rock and roll clothing shop, I NEED MORE and look at the bright pink neon signage Let There Be Neon created for the shop.

We end the day with a visit to Russ and Daughters Cafe on Orchard Street, where we not only see its neon sign facing Allen Street, created by Let There Be Neon, but also go inside the cafe and see its gorgeous interior and some of the specialties they offer. We also purchase to take away and eat outside, their delicious Babka Ice Cream Sandwich, made with their homemade Chocolate Babka and small-batch Babka Ice Cream.
