My heart is so broken for but completely with the victims, teenagers and not, of @parklandflorida and their friends and families on this day of love and friendship for such heartless tragedy with the ultimate tragedy of their lives. Some thoughts on suffering and destruction.

The last two years have been the most challenging and painful years of my life. I felt like I lost everything important to me. I felt the deep dull ache of betrayal and abandonment as my marriage fell to peices over night.

Investing all of my time and energy into one relationship led me into a sort of isolation that is a hallmark of relationships guided by jealousy and possessiveness. The only friends I was allowed to spend time with were friends that we made together and only if she approved. Because of that, I distanced myself from some of the most amazing friends and supporters a person could ever hope for, just to appease toxic jealousy. Meanwhile pouring all my time and love into a doomed union. Basically over night, my work, my business, my home, my wife and many of the friends we made together all disappeared. I sank into dispair and hopelessness. I was the most suicidal I had ever been. I felt like I could never trust another with my heart again. I felt that I was worthless and that no one would ever want me again. I felt stupid. How could I let this happen?...again...

As my life became blazing flames of heartache, I knew I had to do something. I had to walk. I had to suffer...... I challenged myself even further by strapping a pack to my back and walking across the entire state of Washington.....with no money. I became a dharma bum again. I slept outside and shat in holes and drank from streams. I forced myself to trust strangers, nature, my own abilities, and a dirt trail. I survived. I made it. The trail provided and I accomplished a dream that was so bittersweet I choked. I cried for months through the post trail depression and became homless again on the streets of Portland.

Eventually I got back on my feet and got my old job back..... But I only fell deeper into depression and began drinking heavily, feeling sorry for myself, and missing the trail almost as much as I missed my wife. Another season went by in that grey rainy city. And I tried to fix things with her. But it only made things worse. Eventually I realized that I couldn't continue. I quit my job again... And this time I walked over a thousand miles across California and Oregon..... Again, with no money. The trail provides. Angels were abound and they saw me. Many guided me and fed me. Many loved me and some of them even became my family.

Since that adventure I have had to come back into the same situation....... Running away and walking through nature for three months didn't change anything about my life situation. What it did change, was me.

When a forest burns, many of its most beautiful features are destroyed and the animals flee. Many don't survive..... But the forest does not die..... It is transformed through fire. Many processes of the forest actually rely on this purging which can unlock the genetic material inside the seeds of certain trees so that they can germinate. Other forms of life utilize the warmth of the residual burning pockets of forest to incubate their larvea. Much of the burned organic materials are converted into essential nutrients that allow mycelial networks to proliferate and share nutrients and water with plants throughout the forest, eventually fruiting into mushrooms which become food for animals. Because of the fire, a whole new ecosystem is born and it can be even more beautiful than the forest which claimed domain before the inferno transformed it. This is damned powerful lesson and metaphor for the human condition.

May we let the fires and tragedies in our lives unlock the hidden potential within us. May the pain of loss and failure transmute old patterns into new habits and new beginnings. May we find the lessons obscured in the smoke. We are all forced to walk through the flames of life at some point. Humans will always find a way to suffer. But guess what. There is beauty in our suffering.

Let's be the best version of ourselves this year, and let's make 2020 the best year of our life.
