👉🏻 first painting of the year is finally done! ✌🏻 || this is inspired by Atreiu from the book Neverending Story ("Son of All" is the meaning of his name) ✶ when I was a child, I used to be obsessed by the movie based on this book…and it was one of my fav movies for a long time (and it still is in some way…) …so, during last holidays I finally decided to read the book! …and I have to say that I simply adored it! …it's really different from the movie (the movie basically represent only the first part of the book…they totally cut-off the second part) it's full of magical places and charming characters…and I really loved the general atmosphere of this book! so, it immediately inspired me to start woking on a new painting! and this is the result!

My mum bought this huge 28 Sharpie pen set and never used them. I finally claimed them as mine lol. It's the most extensive set I've seen, and I have two large sets already and keep a lookout for any other sets on ebay that would be a good deal. I was worried they might not work, but they're fine.

Sharpies are really underrated as drawing markers. Granted, they're expensive, but a lot of art markers are. I love Winsor and Newton Promarkers, but those aren't cheap, so cash strapped artists should look for Letrasets instead - they're basically the same. Spectrum Noir are also a good budget buy.

They are also some good unbranded general markers (I own a set). You just have to hunt around, try things out, and don't assume expensive = the best. I've got some awesome brush sets that cost less than one expensive name brand brush. Like I said, look around and try things out.

I think the only brand that truly has no exact match are Sennelier Oil Pastels. The set I have that came closest to them was an Artist's Loft set, but even then Sennelier is just in a class of its own. Funnily enough, their Acrylic Paints are cheap in contrast to their pastels, and they are good paints.

One day I will re-write my guide to good, cheap art buys. It was flattering to actually be told I produced something useful to others. Unfortunately, it vanished with my old portfolio site since I couldn't afford to keep running it. But that's life when your poor I guess.

© Becky Welton 2017, based on Regrets by Mylène Farmer/Laurent Boutonnat For my fellow native English speakers who might not be well-versed in French music, this is based on a gorgeously melancholic ballad, sung by Mylène Farmer and Jean-Louis Murat. It's a duet that describes a couple separated by the fact that one of them has died. I tried to make Mylène look ghostly as a result and incorporate every ounce of sadness into Jean-Louis' eyebrows, haha. Seriously though, if you don't know this song and like sad, gothic pop songs from the late 80s/early 90s then watch the video, it's achingly beautiful.

👉🏻 my second painting of the year is done! 🌝✌🏻 the base idea for this painting was to create a modern version of a teenage witch…she should be a sort of modern Oracle, that uses technology to read tarot cards and make predictions! …hope you like it! I'm thinking about making another similar painting in order to create a sort of illustration series (or maybe more then one, to create a Coven)…what do you think? …also, would you like to find this illu available as art print/apparel/accessories on my other stores? (as redbubble, teepublic, threadless…) please let me know!

Phew - this piece was exhausting to complete because a computer crash meant I lost several hours of work halfway through. Anyway, it’s finally done. Ink and promarkers on bristol board, then touched up in GIMP.

This is a piece produced for the Manchester After Hours event on 18th May, specifically the “Be Our Guest” event celebrating the works of Alan Menken (he composed the entire Little Shop of Horrors soundtrack). It was a good excuse to rewatch the film. :P Pop in on the day to see my work showcased in the exhibit!
