Like many people here, my love for the work of Neil Peart is deep and true. I'm so pleased I had the privilege of seeing Rush live, they really are a special group of men.
As Mr. Peart once said, we are only immortal for a limited time. However, someone who has touched as many souls as he has will exceed those limits.
RIP Neil Peart, 1952-2020.

This is the first page in a sketchbook I've set aside for "Tunesmith Tuesday" where every Tuesday, (I know it's Friday now but I forgot to post on Tuesday 😂) I write about and draw a musician I like. The only rule is that I use a different medium every week.
Week 1: Mylène Farmer. ♥ Nobody here in the UK knows who she is but some of my French chums liked it, haha. Drawn with Staedtler Pigment Liners, coloured with Winsor and Newton inks.

Story and illustrations: © Becky Welton 2019
Issue #1, Part #2
Issue #1 blurb:  It's 1983 in suburban south-west England and John Callender is a man in his early twenties who is feeling prematurely ground down by life. His fiancée’s left him, his flatmate drives him mad and he's increasingly losing enthusiasm for playing lead guitar in the band he's spent years building up. If everyone stopped trying to get him a new girlfriend and force musical genius back into him instead of leaving him alone to listen to overblown prog albums while reading 19th century poetry then perhaps he wouldn't be quite so grumpy...

Line drawing version and shaded version of one of my establishing shots for my comic, "Crunch". This is John's (my lead protagonist) bedroom. All his posters are in the tags in case you're squinting at a few but they're too small and fiddly to make out.

I was really gutted to hear about the death of Ted McKenna. Only saw him a couple of months ago. 😔 Absolutely brilliant drummer, truly lovely person. A huge loss to the rock community.
Here's an old SAHB sketch I dug out, it made me smile remembering drawing Ted's cheeky grin. Hope he's playing a sensational gig with Alex right now. ♥

It's the gorgeous and fabulous Mylène Farmer's 57th birthday today. ♥ Here's an unfinished doodle I drew of her that I thought captured some of her late 80s adorable phase. 😁 Joyeux anniversaire, Mylène!

Finally getting off my arse and doing some proper prep work for Crunch, the comic I've been meaning to draw properly for an eternity.
Let the seething resentment towards you flatmate/bandmate begin! 😁

"Crunch" : Text/Illustrations/Characters © Becky Welton 2018*
This comic has been a labour of love, so be gentle, haha.
This is a scene from "Crunch", a comedy/drama I've dabbled with on and off for nearly 10 years. It's a story told from the perspective of John Callander, a young semi-professional guitarist living in southern England in the mid-80s, who's fallen in love with his drummer/flatmate's new girlfriend. Hilarity and frustration ensues!
I drew two and a half issues of this many years ago but decided to start it again from scratch because I think I'm a slightly better storyteller and artist than I was in my late teens... I hope. 😂
Problem is, I've decided to write and draw it in a very erratic manner, with scenes completely out of order. I fully intend to arrange those scenes in an order that makes complete sense, honestly! 😁 In the meantime, I thought it would be fun to share the occasional scene that doesn't massively spoil any plot twists and this felt like a good starting point to introduce John, Colin and Cathy.
It took a bloody long time to put this together as I'm tediously old fashioned, drawing and colouring everything by hand with BrushMarkers/Copic Ciaos. Having said that, it was very rewarding to do this sort of work again - not to mention fun fun fun drawing rock related nonsense on t-shirts and posters in the background. 😁
Really hope you enjoy it, especially if like me, you're fond of characters with massive hair and painful tales of unrequited love. Even if you just take a couple of minutes to look at it, it would make me very happy. ☺
(Big thanks to my old pal @breakneckcomic who was kind enough to look at this scene in its infancy. 😁 Go and read his comic too, click that link!!)
(*Naturally I have no copyright when it comes to the lyrics to "Bloody Luxury" by Whitesnake, written by David Coverdale of course. Same goes for the likes of Rush, Zildjian, Y&T, Peter Gabriel, Iron Maiden, UFO, Gary Moore, Rainbow and Led Zeppelin who are all referenced here in visual form. I get no money from this comic whatsoever; it's just pure, unbridled love for rock - so no need to sue, yeah? ♥)

© Becky Welton 2018 Been in something of an artistic funk for some time... Trying to drag myself out of it by working on part of a comic I used to draw several years ago. Hoping it'll look decent once I'm done with it. Wish me luck.

Illustration - © Becky Welton 2017/ Starfire & Raven - © DC Comics
My stepdaughter really enjoys watching Teen Titans/Teen Titans Go! at the moment so I drew Starfire and Raven for her in my style of cartooning. We have a bit too much fun doing incredibly bad impersonations of them. Sorry Hynden Walch and Tara Strong, we really don't mean any offence.
Drawn with Uniball fineliners, coloured with Letraset/Winsor & Newton ProMarkers, finishing touches added with Aviary.

A very very very rushed doodle indeed but give me a break, I had a brief period of time to kill and Futurama on the brain. I've been toying with the idea of drawing all the programmes I like in my own style but it's been done to death by everyone else, hasn't it? I'll still probably go back on that statement and do it at some point anyway, haha. Even though there's a lot wrong with this I was quite chuffed with Leela's eye so that's passable criteria for a post.

Illustration: © Becky Welton 2017 How To Train Your Dragon: © DreamWorks/Cressida Cowell
I drew this back in the spring for my stepdaughter's 10th birthday. She's absolutely obsessed with How To Train Your Dragon - Toothless in particular - and has been for several years. As a result, we ran out of official merchandise to get her as it dominated several birthdays/Christmasses so in a panic, I thought I'd draw a massive poster of her flying on Toothless in place of Hiccup. Thankfully, it went down very well but now she's massively hinting for me to create an illustration for a t-shirt as Christmas is coming up.... sigh, it never ends! (Drawn with Staedtler Fineliners, coloured with ProMarkers/Copic Ciao markers, mucked about with in KVAD+)

© Becky Welton 2017 There have been some rather interesting programmes about Marc Bolan this week as it was the 40th anniversary of his death, so I thought I'd throw all my glam rock art materials at a portrait.
