Austin and Me
“Wife to the ‘king’. Icon to the world. Destined for more.”
Summary: At 18 years old, she fell in love with Austin, at 20 years old, she became his wife, by 22, she was his doll. In which Cynthia’s life changed drastically after falling head over heels with a man that promised her the moon and the stars. She takes us down the memory lane of what could’ve been— the perfect marriage.
Inspired by the book: Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley.
I do not condemn any of the portrayals I decide to do about certain people, it’s just fanfiction. And it would be divided in parts.
English isn’t my first language so I’m trying my best!
All my life I’ve been going back and forth between México and L.A, it’s been my two homes since I can remember. I was born to a new formed family, my mother met my dad when she already had a baby which was my sister, and since then my parents had two more kids.
I’ve always dreamt of being an actress, ever since my father forced me to watch ‘Viva Las Vegas!’ and ‘King Creole’ with him. For two years, my innocent little me actually believed Elvis was still alive and somehow young, so my dream was to act besides him. I cried hours when my older sister told me Elvis had died decades ago.
My parents always told me that acting was a waste of time and that I wouldn’t make it, not because I wasn’t talented but because out there, there were people that were the same or even more talented than me.
But somehow, I was making it, I had my debut when I was 14 years old and since then I was constantly booked— I adored doing any sort of horror movies, I was a scream queen if you know what I mean.
Once I turned 18 years old, my career was stable, I wasn’t no A-Lister but people at least recognized me, that’s when I was invited to a party, which obviously— my parents didn’t want me to go, they were very strict when it came to permissions, specially when those permissions involved other actors.
“You want us to let you go to a party with other actors?” My mom asked rhetorically as we were setting the table for dinner.
“Absolutely not.” My father interrupted firmly, he was quite strict.
“It’s the weekend, why can’t I go? I’ll be with Elle and her sister.” Hollywood was separated from my family life, my parents didn’t like hearing about actors or nothing, just me and my movies.
“Who are those people, we don’t know them. So no.” My mother was harsh whenever she wanted to, and I get now their distress of being adamant to not let me go to that party, I wish I had listened to them.
I was a girl that was sheltered all her life, so with a sigh and pout I walked to my room, mumbling some cuss words as I knew it would be difficult to convince them.
Surprisingly, Elle and Dakota convinced them, Dakota was older, she had been an adult for quite some time and she knew how Hollywood worked. Freaking out I waited for the day and picked up something from my closet, which now seemed to be all wrong in the eyes of an excited me.
Vintage clothing, go-go boots, Mary Jane heels. I chose something I could work with. I chose a 60s baby blue dress, it only reached mid my thighs so I knew it was good, I grabbed some blue heels too and for my hair I went all out as always, I liked the 60s, my fashion icons were women from that era so I teased my hair to the high heavens, creating a bouffant, my makeup was also heavy around the eyes, black eyeliner and two pairs of falsies, I liked it. I smiled once I saw myself in the mirror, this was me.
The party was surprisingly chill, nothing like the parties I heard about so I was comfortable but I stuck out like a sore thumb, I started to regret going all in on my own style until I saw him. Long blond hair, tall, blue eyes, perfect nose and he was wearing black pants and a white tee. I recognized him immediately, not only was he Hudgens’ ex but he was also the guy that was on one of my favorite movies: Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure.
We stared at each other for some long minutes, until he finally got closer to me.
“Hey— I know ya. You’re the girl from that movie about the psychotic grandparents.” He said playfully, he pushed his hair back.
“I am. Cynthia.” I extended my hand shyly and he accepted it, shaking it and squeezing it a little bit. I was not a fan of the long hair but he looked handsome enough.
Austin knew my age but there’s no problem on asking, once he knew I was legal enough, he hit it off right away. Austin couldn’t help but eye my whole look which made me think he was judging me.
“I like your dress.” Austin laughed. Feeling embarrassed, I snapped at him.
“I don’t even even know why I decided to wear this stupid dress and stupid hair today!” I snapped harshly, which only made him laugh.
“Little girl has some spunk.” He joked which made me feel even more embarrassed after snapping at him.
“Thanks.” I rolled my eyes playfully. He was 7 years older, for some reason he acted as if he was 20 years my senior.
Since that night, we both started seeing each other. He was my first real boyfriend— I think he liked that, he liked the idea of teaching me what love was, he felt that responsibility.
My parents weren’t at all okay with my relationship, for some reason they said that no relationship with an actor could ever turn right. Once again I wish I had listened to them. He trusted me enough to talk about his late mom with me, when we were in his room after an hour of being intimate or whatever we were doing.
“I wish my mom could’ve met you. She would’ve really liked you.” Austin whispered to me in full confidence, he felt like I was the kind of gal his mother always wanted for him, not someone like Vanessa.
“I wish I could’ve met her too.” I whispered back to him softly, I hated seeing him with tears in his eyes while he talked about his mom because I didn’t know how to comfort him.
“She was my whole world… my mama.” Austin rubbed his eyes and sniffed some tears, I tried cuddling closer to him.
Take my advice here: never date a mama’s boy.
“Why you? Why can’t he go back to dating women older than him? You’re only 18.” My mom nagged me, sometimes I felt bad because not only did she have to worry about me but also for my younger sibling, who were barely even teenagers.
“He’s not like you imagine, mami.” I tried excuses for my relationship, they didn’t even know him that well to judge him.
“Oh really? He’s just another damn white actor. Tu crees que tu papá va a dejar que te cases con alguien cómo Austin? (Do you think your father will allow you to marry someone like Austin?)”
I stayed silent, marriage had not been discussed by Austin and I, we were still in the honeymoon phase of the relationship. I was happy— we were happy. Out first Valentine Day’s was amazing and it made things finally official to everyone. Austin gave me this beautiful locket with his picture inside, great gift.
I think he also liked that things were pretty much private between us, I barely posted him on my Instagram since he barely posted me on his, he liked that I wasn’t loud, bitching and moaning about our relationship.
“Should I marry her?” Austin asked his older sister, Ashley, who was engaged herself.
“I don’t know, Aus. She’s not your type.” Ashley never really liked me, she was weirdly a Trump supporter and well— it’s not like Trump was the most inclusive person.
“She’s exactly my type, she’s not bossy or loud. She’s a brunette— well I would rather her being more natural and drop the jet black hair. But she’s exactly what I want.” Austin said.
“You do whatever you want, just remember that marriage ties you down. Don’t let her cut your wings.”
I was 19 years old— marriage was the last thing on my mind. I was happy with my career and surely acting in more stuff gave me more fame and people started to recognize me more. But every action has its consequences and not wrapping it before tapping it caught up to us.
Have you guys heard of shotgun weddings? Well us was in some way. But the wedding should be another part of this.
So, this is the beginning. Austin will be kind of an asshole just cause his behavior is kinda inspired by Elvis.

The True Story Behind The Ring (2002) And The 11 Real Cursed Videotapes And Films That You Should NOT Watch
As a paranormal blogger, I often find myself treading the line between honesty and hoaxes.
It could be the photographic evidence behind a ghost story, or it could be the claims of those that have supposedly witnessed something unexplainable - I spend most of my time trying to work out what's real with a capital ‘R’.
But if there’s one thing I can always rely on, it’s this:
The Japanese know how to make horror films.
Sure, each corner of the world brings its own flair to the genre, but it’s a very specific aesthetic that runs like a piece of thread through Japanese horror, weaving together the cloak of Asian horror.
And it was the British winter weather that reminded me of this aesthetic (and had me emotionally prepared to see a clump of black hair snake around my hand and upvote a Teen Mom 2 meme on Reddit).
So, in true Paranormal Periodical fashion, I’ve decided to dig deep into the reality of a horror icon native to Japan:
Samara, the creepy-ass chick from The Ring (2002).
Check out the trailer to her cinematic debut here!
But the thing is, the true story behind one of the most famous horror movies of all time goes much further than any ol’ cursed videotape.
Turns out that Samara’s life - and afterlife - is based on a very real story, and a very real set of ghosts that Japanese culture cannot get enough of.
Yep.
This means that there’s twice as much chance that The Ring is based on a true story than any other horror film. Great.
So, for all of the readers that haven’t hidden under their duvet, this article is going to be summarising the true story behind Samara, the Japanese folklore of the Yurei (imagine multiple Samaras just, like, existing all at the same time), and all of the cursed videos that bring us uncomfortably close to the plotline of The Ring.
And if that wasn’t enough to traumatise you, I’ve even included all of the cursed horror films you need to know about!
Why? ‘Cause fuck you.
If I’m going down, you’re going down with me.
Now, let’s get spooky.
First, Let’s Recap Samara’s Screen Time (The Ring Movies And The Ring Novel Series)
Our story starts in 1991.
We are in Tokyo. News breaks that four teenagers have died on exactly the same night at exactly the same time. A journalist piques interest in this suspicious occurrence, and winds up in a holiday resort where they stayed a week before their mysterious deaths.
When he’s not shacked up on the beach and living his Love Island fantasy, he discovers a videotape has been left in the room. This tape contains a set of weird-ass images and a warning appears which basically says:
“You gon’ die in seven days. If y’all don’t wanna die in 7 days do thi-”
An advert cuts off the instructions. (So, just like Love Island, then?)
This plotline sounds familiar, doesn’t it? That’s ‘cause it gets repeated in every novel and every film. But that’s not to say that this saga slacks story-wise.
In the first novel, the investigations lead the journalist to the story of Sadako. Turns out that she was the daughter of Shizuko Yamamura, a medium who was branded a charlatan. Shizuko committed suicide by throwing herself in the crater of Mount Mihara as a result of her disdain by the world around her, but the fate of Sadako was declared unknown.
The journalist follows the trail back to a well. And at the bottom of this well? What’s left of Sadako.
Firmly believing that a proper burial will restore peace to Sadako’s ghost, he believes that laying her body to rest has fulfilled the duty expected of the viewer before the Flat Tummy Tea advert cropped off how to stop her.
But fit with the surprise ending that kills a sidekick of the journalist, we discover that copying the videotape is what spares the watcher of the tape from Sadako’s curse.
Sadako doesn’t want to be laid to rest - she wants the world to know of her suffering and thus by copying the video and showing it to someone, more people will know.
Swap out a couple Japanese destinations for Seattle inspired locations, and we end up with The Ring (2002) - the American film.
Still with me?
Good. Because this is where the Japanese story and the American films diverge:
The American films go off-piece, either churning out this same plot, or go deeper into Samara’s past. This includes seeking out her mother and the child of the journalist being possessed by Samara.
The Japanese, however, shake off such a simple plot and stick to the novels.
Spiral (1995) is the sequel to the first book, from which it is deduced that a tumour is what kills the victims of Sadako. The tumour forms in the throat, and then blocks the airway when the 7 days are up. This tumour is transferred from the tape to the body via an organism known as the Ring Virus.
Investigations continue, questions go unanswered, and then the virus mutates and uses a report on this case to become a medium to transfer the curse to the reader. Some bloke reads it, and begins to think of Sadako and the well. He follows these thoughts to the well, and meets a girl called Masako.
They zig-a-ziga, and he discovers that Masako is actually Sadako.
Oh, and she’s up the duff.
Sadako then makes him publish the files that are essentially now the tape.
The rest of the book series sticks to the growing spread of the virus, and includes a supercomputer project, someone giving birth to Sadako… The Americans only went so far as someone sending a video clip to her next victim!
Yet despite the escalating Japanese side of things, there is something that I need to mention to bring out yet another component of Sadako’s uncomfortably realistic story:
It’s her tragic death.
Having fled to Hakone - the site of the well she died in - to visit her father in hospital, she is raped by a doctor. She defends herself with her psychic powers, but once she is strangled, she is incapacitated and cannot fight back. She is then thrown (still alive) into the well.
Nevertheless, the premise is still clear - and uncomfortably accurate to Japanese folklore and the true story inspiring this set of novels and films.
*Runs away*
The True Story Behind Samara
Now it’s time to discuss the woman of the well herself.
Samara, or Sadako, is the leading lass of these films and novels, and is known for her mop of tangled black hair, her debut appearance in the creepiest cursed video tape known to mankind, and desire for the world to know her name!
(I’m telling you, this whole saga could just be a metaphor for Love Island.)
But it turns out that this tale is based on a similarly tragic set of events taking place 700 years ago:
It is claimed that a woman named Okiku worked in the dungeon of Himeji castle, and was the servant to a samurai. Among her tasks was looking after a set of 10 golden plates.
In true rom-com fashion, the samurai fell in love with her, and wanted to leave his wife for Okiku. However, in true patriarchy fashion, when she declined his advances he blackmailed her by hiding one of the golden plates and threatening to tell the authorities that she had stolen it.
We are uncertain of the exact events following this, but we know that she either committed suicide by throwing herself in the well, or was murdered by the samurai and then thrown in the well.
Either way she ended up in a well. And this well actually exists…
(Note the iron bars covering the well. To keep her contained, perhaps?)
Well, I say ended up - Okiku made a point of revisiting the samurai after her death. She would haunt him by crawling out of the well each and every night, and would make a point of counting the golden plates. When she found once was missing, she would scream and throw a fit of rage.
If that story wasn’t similar enough to the theatrical version of events, then Okiku’s portrayal as a yurei will be sure to send a shiver down your spine...
The Yurei
Okiku is far from alone in her ventures in the afterlife. In fact, a whole branch of Japanese ghosts bare similarities to her existence.
And they are known as yurei.
Take a look at this gif of Samara:
A dark mop of wet, let down hair. A white, flowing dress. Arms outstretched and hands limp.
These are all core traits shared by this #squad of spirits.
The japanese word translates to ‘faint soul’ or ‘dim spirit’, but the main focus of the yurei is actually their burial and afterlife.
Women are buried in Japan in white flowing dresses and have their hair down, hence this aesthetic crossing over to the other plain of existence. Unfortunately, the plain of existence they reach is far from the heavens expected:
The yurei are spirits who are kept from a peaceful afterlife, thanks to the unfortunate nature of their deaths. The yurei are ghosts which have died under unnatural circumstances - think traumatic deaths or having no official rites to bless than during their final moments. Oh, and you can’t forget the burden of jealous feelings and the desire for vengeance!
“So, is sharing round their tragic stories like Samara’s the way to cleanse this spirit?”
Nah.
Performing the rites or resolving the circumstances of their desire for vengeance or their unfinished business typically does the trick.
In fact, letting the ghost have intimate relations with an intended lover is a very popular method of de-yureing your life.
Not willing to shag a spirit?
(Of all the sentences I thought I’d say on this blog, that is definitely not one of them.)
I’m afraid you’re going to have to let the yurei carry out their final actions forever…and ever… and ever…
So, we know what yurei are - but is Okiku the only recorded case of one?
Nope!
In fact, she’s one of three famous yurei that are repeatedly portrayed in theatrical and cinematic productions. Otsuya and Oiwa make up the rest of the trio, but unfortunately I can only find Oiwa’s story.
Well, the terrifying part, that is: anyone that portrays her in a film or at the theatre is sure to be haunted by her!
Currently freaked the fuck out? Here’s how you can spot if you are being haunted by a yurei:
Their appearance is often what gives them away. Aside from the white dress, the hair style is actually key to their aesthetic. It is believed that Japanese women often wore their hair pinned up during their life, and thus had it down for their burial. That or the characters portraying yurei at the theatre would wear wigs, giving the appearance of a cloak of long hair.
Speaking of the white dress, yureis wore white kimonos as this was the symbol of purity, again the traditional garb of buried Japanese women. They would also wear a small piece of cloth to cover their forehead.
(Perhaps explaining why Samara draped her forward and covered her face - and thus her forehead, too.)
“So, they just look like women that have been buried?”
Nearly - they are often seen hovering above the ground, with wisps of colour coming off of their bodies. Also known as hitodemon, these often stick to the colour palette of greens, blues and purples.
These colours feature heavily in the American Ring films.
The Real Cursed Videos You Seriously Shouldn’t Watch
Aside from Samara’s #aesthetic, the main feature of both the novel series and the films is that of the cursed video tape.
Bearing a similarity to a student film from an edgy undergrad, it contains a mix of abstract and hyper-realistic images bound to unsettle the watcher - all set to a soundtrack of high pitched noises.
The tape contains traces of Samara’s life, and is intended to leave a mark on the watcher to encourage them to make the world know of her pain. But being creeped out isn’t the only effect of this tape. Over the week prior to their deadline, weird effects in photographs, bite marks and other physical afflictions are also noted. It's these mental and physical effects that give the real life cursed videos lingering on the net their ‘cursed’ label.
Unfortunately, these effects tend to be much more drastic than those envisaged in The Ring.
*sigh*
#1 - suicidemouse.avi
Mickey Mouse is one of the most iconic cartoon characters to date. His lovable charm and his adorable voice make him the extrovert of the age! However, this video might make you regard the frontman of Disney in a different light.
This video - which first appeared on 4chan - sees a sad looking Mickey walk through a dark, grey city, with hands behind his back.
Things take a turn, however, when a series of creep-AF things go down.
The screen goes blank for a couple of minutes. The piano music stops. The music comes back on. Screams are heard. The music gets fucked up. The buildings around him crumble. He wears an uncomfortable grin as the city falls apart. Mickey collapses with a syringe in his hand.
The final shot shows a blurry logo for the cartoon character, and Russian text appears. It reads:
“The sights of hell bring its viewers back in.”
It is claimed that after a single watch you will experience panic attacks and suicidal thoughts.
Could it have simply come from a troll on the web? Potentially. But the urban legend follows a much darker tale, claiming film critic Leonard Maltin was reviewing old cartoons that would be brought into a compilation when he saw this one. He voted it out immediately, and actually left the room thanks to the video.
But it is also claimed her kept a version for his own records.
Oh! And it gets worse!
The original editor was supposedly driven to insanity having watched it, stealing a security guard’s gun and shooting himself having yelled “Real suffering is not known!”.
Yeah, fuck this shit.
#2 - The Japanese Kleenex Advert (1980s?)
The Japanese film industry makes yet another feature on this list, and once again, it's the traumatising stuff that puts them on the map.
The advert shows a woman sitting next to a baby painted as a red ogre who sits on a pile of straw. If that wasn’t weird enough, music with the innovative lyrics “die” in German repeatedly being chanted is the soundtrack to this freaky advert.
Well, depending on the time of day, that is. The soundtrack would alter depending on when it was viewed.
Viewers also noted an unsettling feeling whilst watching the advert, some even complained of sudden intense suicidal thoughts. The advert was quickly pulled from air thanks to the complaints, but not before it could take its toll on the creators of the advert.
Unexplainable accidents and a series of mental health issues plagued the creators of the film, leaving both viewers and producers haunted. The baby in the video? Killed in a car crash. The actress in the video? Hung herself in a mental hospital.
#4 - The Grifter
Potentially the scariest video on this list, the Grifter is a collage of images and clips relating to human torture, sacrifice and a variety of other gruesome scenes. Splash on some unsettling music and you have yourself a 4chan icon!
The thing is, only screenshots have been shared of this video. All we know is based on the whispers and wonders of the internet pit that is this website. This includes a clip of a rotting plant with the words “Your race is the one dying”, writhing maggots, paintings melting, flashing colours, random forests, text in different languages...
“Hold up - doesn’t this sound like all supposedly cursed videos?”
The images of a very realistic looking baby/doll set this apart from the other videos (dis)gracing this list. Well, that and the supposed subliminal messages people claim to be lingering on the frequencies in the music.
A very clear message is laid out to viewers, however, when a voice says:
“This child (now a young man) is still alive and lives in a local shelter whose name was not given. He never spoke, and still is katatonie [sic].”
We then once again return to the parallels with the other videos:
Negative physical effects and internal afflictions are frequently noted by viewers; sudden nosebleeds, nightmares, hallucinations, depression and suicidal thoughts haunt anyone who dares watch.
Fancy clickin’ ‘play’? Good luck with that. Any clips found on any corner of the web are often taken down, and are near impossible to copy.
#5 - Satan’s Sphinx
Most of the videos have been traced back to 4chan, and have left us with much speculation regarding their backstory. But the urban legend accompanying this video starts with its creation:
It was supposedly uploaded to the internet in 2006 by the US government in order to test subliminal messaging. But when the reports of madness started rolling in, it was taken off the web.
Don’t fancy watching it yourself?
Then you’re missing out on a succession of bloody images overladen with high pitched sounds and murmurs! Eventually the images flick through so quickly that a flash of is all that is left.
So, no, you’re not missing out on much. Apart from depression.
The Real Cursed Movies You Seriously Should Watch (They’re All Great Movies, Okay, It’s Worth The Sacrifice)
Everyone okay? We all good? Had a little cry?
It’s ok, it’s over now.
Now it’s time for the cursed horror movies you can watch!
But before I continue the train of terrifying-shit that is this post, I wanted to begin with a personal story regarding cursed videos: In case you didn’t know, I captured paranormal activity on audio whilst recording a video for my long-dead YT channel. It was when I mentioned the true story of Anneliese Michel that strange occurrences began to plague my sound.
Given that, I firmly believe that discussing the true stories behind certain hauntings is what cursed these films, most of which were based on true stories or unholy themes.
#1 - The Exorcist (1973)
It’s famous for being one of the scariest horror films to date, becoming a cinematic icon that would lead the the horror movie genre forward in terms of both CGI and storyline. But it's also earned its reputation through the claims of a curse.
Fires on set, actors being seriously hurt during filming - and the death of actors whilst the film was barely out of post production - all scar the film. Heck, in 1987, the actress who voiced the demon experienced the curse herself when her son murdered his own family before comitting suicide.
Here’s the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDGw1MTEe9k
#2 - The Conjuring (2013)
Both the cast and crew cited paranormal activity, but it was a slash of a claw on Vera Farmiga’s laptop that sparked the rumours of a curse…
Digital claw marks ripped through her laptop and then appeared on her thigh, bearing the mark of a demonic attack or violent spirit.
An exorcist was thus made to be on set throughout filming for the sequel.
Here’s the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k10ETZ41q5o
#3 - The Passion Of The Christ (2004)
The presence of Mel Gibson was not the only thing to have cursed this film.
In fact, is was an ungodly amount of lightning strikes that plagued production - even if ‘ungodly’ isn’t the right word to use. In the filming of one scene, lightning struck the set, specifically Caviezel, a key actor in the film. And this was the second lightning strike felt by the assistant director.
Unfortunately, this was one of the few ailments and issues Caviezel would fac including lacerations due to whipping and pneumonia.
Here’s the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Aif1qEB_JU
#4 - Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
It’s time for another biblical tale!
The sudden death of the composer and the infamous death of the director’s wife at the hands of Charles Manson have scarred this film. In fact, Manson supposedly cited that he was the devil and doing the devil’s work when he killed her.
A producer also suffered sudden kidney failure soon after the film, amping up the evidence to suggest this film was cursed.
Here’s the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjpA6IH_Skc
#5 - Poltergeist (1982)
There’s a lot going on with this film. Like a lot. Like real, human skeletons being used in the pool scene. But that was just the start of this curse.
Unfortunately, this fantastic film has a fatal backstory.
Carol-Anne, the little girl at the centre of the film, died at the age of 12 as a result of a cardiac arrest, and across a mere 6 year window 3 crew and cast members also met their demise.
Here’s the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eZgEKjYJqA
#6 - The Omen (1976)
This film certainly racked up the greatest number of tragic occurrences, and this supposed curse is believed to be linked to the film itself.
The plotline follows the birth of the antichrist, and follows his life as he takes out his enemies and seeks to dominate the world.
(Mwahahahaha)
And honestly, it seems like outside of the set this may have just been true:
3 planes carrying both cast and crew ran into dangerous weather conditions. The screenwriter himself was on two separate flights that were struck by lightning, and an executive producer was on a flight that flew through a storm.
Another plane that was supposed to carry Gregory Peck - one of the masterminds behind the film - crashed. Peck had cancelled his ticket moments before deciding to fly.
And the director? His hotel was bombed by the IRA. A special effects artist? His girlfriend was killed in a car crash. Still wanna watch? No thanks.
Here’s the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS-sXcx30O4
So - What Do You Think?

Prompt fill for @maroucia : Mail-order bride modern AU. In a modern Westeros, the North is much poorer than the South and Sansa is lured by all the riches and temptations of the south and so, she decides to offer herself as a mail-order bride. Of course, she catches Sandor’s eyes who himself has turned to the idea because he hates dating seeing that his face is burned and all, but he still would like to find a wife. Read more below or on AO3 here.
Chapter 1
Settling down with a mug of tea, Sansa needed to take a break from job hunting. Opening her tablet, she decided to indulge her favorite escape: perusing vacation blogs, pretending she was planning a visit to the southern countries of Westeros.
While the south was full of cities bustling with diversity, plenty of jobs to be had for the asking, and mild weather, the north never recovered from the war. And the ten year winter season was a burden itself.
The poor economy denied basic resources for northerners, especially since King Joffrey placed tariffs on all the products exported from there as part of a trade war. In the past year, many industries closed. And families that Sansa had known all her life were moving away.
Since her father passed away five years back, there had been huge financial burdens on the family, and Sansa couldn’t bring herself to leave them. So she settled on a local university to continue her dream of becoming a custom dressmaker.
Bran’s snowboard accident happened not long after; in-home physical therapy and medical bills further strained the family funds. Sansa had to quit school and work two jobs. Since their mother spent her time working and caring for Bran, Arya and Rickon grew wilder by the day. Winter had come with a vengeance for the Starks.
Sleet rattled against the windows, shaking her of her recollections. Gods, what she wouldn’t do to be on a southron beach right now. She was determined to reach her dreams, one way or another. She just needed a plan.
Sansa tapped her finger on the bookmark of her favorite blog. Escape to the warm, sun-kissed beaches of King’s Landing! Sansa wished for nothing more. Life seemed so carefree for the people who lived there. The sight of the wealthy, young, tanned and fit men and women frolicking in the waves sent a pang of envy through her.
Sansa couldn’t remember the last time she had a vacation, could barely remember a time when she felt the effortless contentment in the people smiling back at her through the screen of her tablet.
Eagerly she moved onto the second one. The beautiful shores of Port Lannisport, one of the largest, richest cities of Westeros. Come to visit and see it’s prosperity for yourself!
More beautiful, tanned people, Sansa complained inwardly. This time they were wearing swimsuits that barely covered their most intimate places, enjoying champagne under burgundy and gold cabanas of the exclusive Casterly Rock Club.
Yes, Casterly Rock Club was very elegant, but she would feel too out of place there if they even allowed shabby northerners into the place. Every one of the guests was surgically enhanced and dripping in gold and diamond jewelry.
Swallowing hard, her hand instinctively went to the silver and sapphire direwolf charm at her neck, the last nameday gift she had received from her late father. It was a reminder of better times, and the ones she prayed to the gods were ahead for her. She fingered it while whispering a quick prayer to her father before tapping on the next bookmark.
Shop the opulent Lannisport Outlet Mall, your one-stop destination to luxury! Oh, she would much rather visit there! Ever since she was a little girl, Sansa loved embroidery, sewing, and designer clothing.
The scenes showed happy families laughing while eating southern delicacies, bringing up a bitter lump in her throat. Young people in the latest summer fashions carried designer Dornish leather handbags as they shopped and flirted under a shaded canopy.
Wrinkling her nose, Sansa glanced down at her sweats and ratty sweater. When was the last time she went shopping? Aside from The Wall Mart, there weren’t many places to shop near Winterfell - and none of them fashionable. She would definitely need to do some serious online retail therapy if she ever visited Port Lannisport.
Faintly Sansa could hear her mother speaking to someone. On to the next region, she said to herself as she tucked her feet under her legs.
Visit the rugged hills of the Westerlands, the richest lands in Westeros. A landscape dotted with golden, rolling plains and caves from which gold and silver mines pour forth deep veins in astonishing quantities. Abundant gemstones and precious metals mean lower prices on all your jewelry needs!
With widened eyes, Sansa clicked on the pictures of black fertile fields, apple orchards, Pinot grape vineyards, and Black Mission fig tree groves. Further inland lay dense maple forests that opened up to crystal blue lakes and river rapids, reportedly renowned worldwide for whitewater rafting.
Gemstones of all kinds, gold and silver jewelry, beautiful log homes in the verdant foothills all caught her attention. Oh, she would definitely visit the Westerlands first! The featured delicacies and riches were sensational!
But how could she go? The family barely had enough money to get by; not many opportunities presented themselves as of late. Her gaze fell on a bookmark icon for a mail-order bride broker she had set up months ago. Missandei’s Marriage Brokerage Suite. Let us help you find your perfect match with a beautiful, northern bride of your choosing.
That’s one way to get south. And if I’m chosen, I could put my husband’s fee in a trust for Bran. From what Sansa had seen on the website, Lannisport and King’s Landing was teeming with beautiful women, but the farming areas surrounding them were not heavily populated. The men there depended on agriculture and vacationers for their incomes – jobs that left little time for meeting potential partners.
Her mother’s voice pulled her out of her fantasies - and back to the dreary reality of life. Stern Aunt Lysa was impatiently tapping her foot; Sansa had been so caught up in her musings that she didn’t realize she’d entered the room.
“Sansa, are you daydreaming again? Put down the tablet for a moment, please.”
Her mother had a way of saying “please” that sounded anything but polite, especially when she was about to lecture to one of her children.
No wonder Arya and Bran are nowhere to be found. Suppressing a sigh, Sansa braced herself and turned to face them.
“I cannot understand for the life of me why you haven’t yet settled down with someone and moved out,” Catelyn began. “I was married for four years at your age.”
“Mother-“
“It’s all I can do to keep Winterfell let out, and food on the table for Arya and Rickon, and Bran with all the medical bills, I can’t afford to feed you too.“
“Mother, I know,” Sansa struggled to remain respectful. Ever since she turned eighteen, this had become a well-worn topic between them, and at twenty, Sansa had already said all she had to say on the subject.
Enter Aunt Lysa.
“That is why I started college,” Sansa pulled her mother close, “so I could make real money, not just the little I bring doing housekeeping and selling on Etsy.”
“And what good did it do you? You knew from the start that we could ill afford it, but you were determined to waste what little money your father left you on it.“ Aunt Lysa interjected. "And here you are, squandering your days on that damned tablet!”
Her words stung. “I wanted to help the family by having an actual career. I thought maybe I could open a clothing store and help the local economy, but there aren’t any opportunities here.” Sansa stepped away and wrung her hands.
Exasperated, Aunt Lysa shook her head. “Always with the dreams. Well, it’s time you grew up. Take your educated self south, Miss.”
“I would love to go, but since I, as you say, wasted my money on education, I don’t have a way.”
Aunt Lysa and her mother exchanged a look. "Uncle Petyr lives in King’s Landing in the famed Red Keep and he’s offered to take you in. You could work with his showgirls’ costumes-“
Tears stung Sansa’s eyes, for this, too, was a familiar and unpleasant topic between the three of them.
“No, absolutely not! He’s not my uncle, so I wish you both would stop with that! And they aren’t showgirls, Aunt Lysa, they’re sex workers!”
"Ungrateful child!” Aunt Lysa sputtered. “This family has no better friend than Petyr, especially since your father and Jon both-”
Sansa rolled her eyes.
“Sansa that is just a terrible rumor started by jealous people trying to discredit him.” Catelyn insisted.
“So that’s the official party line he has you two repeating.“
Catelyn gaped at her, but Sansa went on, “He’s always staring at me in the grossest way. Sending me friend requests on my social media. He’s a stalker.“
“Sansa, that’s your college third wave feminism talking! Petyr is old-fashioned, and he’s not about to hide that he’s interested in you. What’s wrong with that?” Aunt Lysa fumed.
“What’s wrong is that I’ve made it clear that I don’t want his attention - and yet he refuses to take no for an answer!” Sansa set her jaw. “If you like him so much, why don’t you go live with him and leave me alone?”
Catelyn pinched Sansa’s arm. “By the gods, Sansa, you can be just as willful as Arya at times!”
She jerked away from her.
“You don’t have many options. So, it’s either go with your Uncle Petyr, young lady, or get in touch with a marriage brokerage.”
“A marriage brokerage? To offer myself as a mail order wife?” Sansa’s nervously considered the possibility. It was an honorable way to find a husband and definitely a good opportunity…
“Petyr offered to do it himself, but I don’t like your attitude, so you just do it on your own!” Aunt Lysa hissed. "Just go on and become a mail order bride on one of those bargain sites and see what kind of monster you end up with!”
“Whoa, wait just a minute - Petyr offered to buy me outright, didn’t he?!” Sansa shouted. “And not just for my sewing skills!”
Catelyn side eyed her. “Don’t be so dramatic.”
“Mother-”
“I married your father as a mail-order bride.” Her mother arched her brow.
Great, another guilt trip.
“And I married your Uncle Jon as one, the Seven rest him.” Aunt Lysa added, even though Sansa had turned her back to her. “You have a duty to your family. It’s time you made good on it.”
“We need the money, Sansa, and there aren’t many prospects up here-“ her mother gestured to the shabby conditions around them, “and Bran and Arya and Rickon need me. What would you have me do?”
“Stop being so selfish, Sansa!” Aunt Lysa shouted.
“Good gods, Aunt Lysa, even the marriage agencies give women the right to choose their husbands!”
Squeezing her eyes shut, Sansa fought to calm her temper and think rationally. Perhaps if I joined up with one of the free sites, I will find a nice man, settle in with him and who knows? Love might follow. It worked out pretty well for my mother. Less so for my aunt.
Biting her lip, Sansa thought it over. Could she really muster up the courage to reach out to a strange man? To be his wife, and share his bed?
Sansa had already looked at a few sites, and they didn’t seem so bad; each one had ways and means to ensure successful matches. The only caveat was the marriage had to be consummated the day of the wedding, and if they didn’t get along by the end of the trial period, Sansa would need to return the money - and to the north.
Excitement and a bit of fear took hold of her, while Sansa’s silence increased her mother’s unease.
“Stop that lip nibbling, Sansa, it’s unladylike and a disgusting habit you picked up from Arya. So what will it be: go stay and work with Uncle Petyr, or become a mail order bride?”
Sansa had so little ownership of her own life since her father died. Yet today she would regain control, snatch it out of thin air, all for herself.
“Fine, Mother, I’m going to do it my way. I’ll meet with a marriage brokerage as soon as possible.”
Without a word, she picked up her tablet and left the room, leaving her mother crying over her ungrateful daughter and her aunt harping on her duty to the family.

Here’s How Bollywood Celebrated The Powerful Women In Their Lives On International Women’s Day 2020
While it’s undeniable that women should be celebrated and treated well every day, it’s nice to have a special day for women; especially during trying times like this. It’s no secret that this country is not a very safe space for women. Yet, we live on and take every day in our stride to become the powerful women we were always destined to be. On March 8th, many Bollywood celebrities echoed that sentiment and took to social media to give fans a glimpse into the lives of their families and close ones. Here is a list of Bollywood celebrities who celebrated International Women’s Day in the most joyous way possible:
1. Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kalki probably shared one of the most honest posts on Instagram related to International Women’s Day this year. She shared an image of her sleeping blissfully in an eye mask with her little bundle of joy cuddled up right next to her. In the photo you can see her adorable pooch passed out on the mattress next to her *heart eyes*. The Dev D actress spoke about how she wishes that women got exactly what they want in life and not follow what is expected out of them. She mentioned how she hopes women start learning to prioritize themselves above all else and give themselves ‘invisible pats’ on the back for all the work they do. She also spoke about the male gaze and asked women to view themselves through the eyes of their own experiences instead. The actress ended her note on a humorous note (as is expected of her), “May you unhook your bra strap, get into your comfiest pajamas and chill the f*ck out. Love from a happy, exhausted feminist mama bear.”

Speaking for womankind as a whole, the actress talked about how she wishes that women are considered at par in all that they do. She ended her informational post with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, himself, “Let’s BE the change we wish to see.”

Moderne Press may be slowly becoming a household name in the lifestyle and fashion PR industries but let’s get to know Connie a bit more. From her beauty must-haves to her guilty pleasures, this is one Founder we’ll definitely be hearing more from in the years to come.
My style in 3 words...Comfortable, minimal, polished.
My nicknames are...I don’t really have any nicknames, except for the endearments my husband and daughter use.
My drugstore must-have is…Aveeno Active Naturals Lotion! It’s affordable and hydrating – and as a bonus, it's a fairly “safe” beauty product according to the EWG Healthy Living App. (It’s a super helpful and time-saving app, as I’m trying to buy more clean and safe products.)
My last purchase was…Leggings for my daughter. She has a way cuter wardrobe than I do!
My top 3 make-up bag essentials are…Mascara, Shu Uemura eyelash curler, and Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer.
My beauty secret is…Wear sunscreen and wash your face before bed. Not so much a secret, but I like to think it helps keep your skin looking fresh and young(er)!
I smell like…Frederic Malle Lys Mediterranee.
I keep in shape by…Mostly from carrying and running after my toddler! I also make a concerted effort to go yoga class once a week. That’s all I’ve been able to manage in my schedule since becoming a parent!
My de-stress trick is…Taking yoga breaths, which help calm my mind down. Also looking at photos of my daughter smiling always works!
My secret talent is…Being able to solve Wheel of Fortune puzzles quickly! Not particularly useful in real life, but I swear, I would be an awesome contestant on that show (save the luck of the wheel)!
My first celebrity crush was…Gosh, I don’t really think I had one.
The music artist who always gets me dancing is…Maroon 5. My daughter loves a lot of their songs, so we have little dance parties.
My fashion icon is…The women around me! I’m honestly more inspired by street style and the women that I know in real life. (Then again, I know I’m lucky because I have the privilege of knowing and working with some very stylish women.)
My guilty pleasure is…Cookies. I have such a huge sweet tooth!
My favorite website is…Impossible to name just one, but I can try to narrow it down to my 3 daily must-reads: Humans of New York, Cup of Jo and Oh Joy!
My favorite TV show is…The Blacklist and Shark Tank.
When I have some free time, I…Haha, what free time?! Jk
For breakfast, I always have…Coffee!
My favorite restaurant is…Commis in Oakland. While it’s not on my regular rotation by any means, it IS my most memorable meal to date.
My ultimate travel destination is...Italy. Loved all my travels there so far, and would love to go back to explore more!
In my career, I am most proud of…Securing one-page features in Country Living and O, the Oprah Magazine for the same brand in the same month. It was not only an amazing career achievement, but really made an impact for the brand and led to some other amazing opportunities and partnerships.
The best advice I’ve ever received is…Be open to change. This is still a hard one for me, because I’m a planner by nature, but as I’ve grown both professionally and personally, I’ve tried to adopt a more of a go-with-the-flow mentality.
As an entrepreneur & PR professional, I’ve learned…Hire people that do it better. There’s no way you can excel at everything in life, so it’s important to hire employees, consultants and other experts that can help and support your growth – in both your personal and professional lives.
My goal in life is…To raise a smart, kind and thoughtful kid. Be a good to the people in my life – as a wife, mom, friend, boss, etc.
