The long-awaited and much-anticipated Drunk Les Mis summary
(This is the second time I've had to restart because people just really want to talk with me on WhatsApp immediately Right Now)
(dem horns holy shit, How dare Davies intentionally deny this score????)
We have Everyman in prison (his name is literally the blandest name Huge-hoe could summon--anyway, normal dude trying to do good) for a petty crime
The Cop has a hard-on for following laws no matter how silly and minor
(so Everyman and Cop obv don't get along in the traditional sense)
(seriously this score is so fucking good, Davies Why)
So being out of prison doesn't treat Everyman so well
Colm Wilkison The Bishop is actual perfection (I've gotten this far in the FMA translation, he is as close to perfection as The Hoe could write Is2G)
Anyway Everyman tries to steal some silverware, but Bishop pulls a fast one on everyone and gives Everyman even more silver so he can get a clean start
Everyman decides to make the most of his Second Chance because Damn, Bishop is just startling Good; parole papers are torn, it's A Thing
So eight years later, Everyman is mayor of a town and owns a factory that a chick named Fantine works at
Fantine has a secret kid but won't give in to sexual harassment (not from Everyman), so she's fired
Which is real bad for her because Fantine basically gives her whole life away for this lil' baby tucked away Elsewhere (Montfermeil)
Everyman discovers this, feels bad about, it, and promises to care for Metaphor for Hope of the Future
Everyman earns his livelihood for the next Many Years by saving this dude from a carriage which simultaneously totally exposes his secret identity (Stronk Man™) to Cop--this includes consciously allowing Cop to know who he is
(in the novel he gets arrested in the process and has to break out and waits for a year before getting the kid but w/e)
But yeah, in the meantime Cop catches Everyman out, and Everyman escapes to rescue Metaphor for Hope of Future from Metaphor for Everything Bad Ever but loses his position as mayor in addition to the right for any person outside of the church to know them, I guess
So Everyman and Metaphor for Hope of the Future are living in Paris 9 years later alongside Metaphor for Everything Bad Ever and Cop
There's a lot of characters representative of Revolution (Greatest Characters Ever™) who we won't get into because they're all slated to die and I don't want you getting emotionally attached like the rest of the Les Mis community
Metaphor for Hope of Future and Metaphor for Something I can't Concisely Determine fall in love. W/e, heteros
There's multiple songs dedicated to revolution and Greatest Characters Ever™, but plotwise technically they're not all that significant unless you look at historical content and symbolism and whatnot (sorry Baes, I still love you)
So Greatest Characters Ever™ die but Metaphor for for Something I Can't Concisely Determine survives by Everyman's hand (also Spirit of the Revolution and Symbol of The People die hand-in-hand) despite that Cop tries to stand in the way of All Of This
(no really, Greatest Characters Ever™ have more symbolic importance, but I don't have nearly the bulletpoints to get into those nuances) (also drunk)
Cop starts questioning everything he stands for in the face of Greatest Characters Ever™'s cause/sacrifice and Everyman having the opportunity to kill Cop but not
(holy shit the score is so good???) (Why would anyone brag about abandoning this excellence??????)
PARISIAN SEWERS
Cop has the ultimate chance to finally take Everyman in/kill him but finds that he cannot, so he handles his emotions like anyone would and literally kills himself
(excessive bonecracking sound effects are included so you know there's no sequel where he somehow survived and comes back)
Everyman doesn't know this though and is worried about Metaphor for Hope of the Future, so he tells Metaphor for Something I Can't Concisely Determine that he's leaving and not to follow him or tell MftHotF
MfSICCD obv caves immediately, and after he discovers that Everyman saved him at the barricade he and MftHotF track Everyman down to where he's trying to die in peace in a church
So MftHotF and MfSICCD are the only survivors, but everyone else (including Cop because he had a change of heart and we like him now--this is my HC, leave me alone) is at The Big Barricade in the Sky and living peacefully and waving flags
THE END.

The Music Man on Broadway with Hugh Jackman & Sutton Foster (Review)
If you do not wish to be spoiled for a 60 year old musical or don’t wish to read about me gushing over it, do not proceed.
For everyone else, let’s dive in
First a little back story. I believe it was sometime in early 2019 that it was announced that Hugh Jackman would be starring in a revival of The Music Man on Broadway. Now, that is not one of my favorite musicals, but I had already been regretting not going to see Hugh during his north American concert tour, so I was like: hell yes. Not too long after that it was announced that the female lead would be Sutton Foster, who is very notable in the Broadway community (she has won 2 Tony awards for best actress). I’m not a huge fan of her voice, but I was still all-in for Hugh.
The show was scheduled to open in August of 2020 and when tickets went on sale in Sept of 2019, I bought a pair for the third week of performances because it was around my birthday.
And then...well, we all know what happened in 2020. Broadway shut down in March with no opening date in sight. So...we waited, and waited, and waited, through 3 sets of rescheduled dates until FINALLY the show was supposed to open in December 2021. And it did! for one week! and then everyone in the cast got Omicron and they shut down for 2 weeks.
But finally after all that time I was able to go and see the show and, guys, it was worth every second of waiting.
For those unfamiliar with the show, the premise is that a con man who travels from city to city swindling people out of their money is currently going by the name Professor Harold Hill. His current con: pretending to be a band leader, selling instruments and uniforms to unsuspecting families and then leaving town before he gets caught because, of course, he cannot actually lead a band. He goes to Iowa to run his latest scheme and tries to win over all the townspeople, including the music teacher slash librarian, Marian Paroo. Singing, dancing, and comedy follow.
This adaptation was pretty close to the original. They changed some of the lyrics to one of the songs “Shipoopi” (the originals are no longer PC) and they added a lot of dancing, and an “epilogue” scene i guess we could call it (which in reality was just an excuse to have Hugh & Sutton tap dance) but otherwise it stayed pretty true to its quirky origins (Yee Gods!)
Now I do feel like I can be a bit of a Broadway snob. (I think this was the 12th show I’ve seen on B-way, not including musicals/plays I’ve seen elsewhere) So some of my comments may be a bit nitpicky fyi haha
Hugh was, overall, absolutely incredible & amazing. I do think that he struggled a bit with the talk-singing songs like Trouble in River City and the beginning of 76 Trombones. I kind of half wonder if that was due to the accent he was putting on, which was inconsistent at times. When he sang-sang songs in the second act it was much better, but I could also hear a little Aussie coming through so it was probably more his natural singing voice.
Insofar as dancing & general performance though - Hugh was utterly amazing. He’s so funny and SUCH AN AMAZING DANCER OMG.
I thought Sutton Foster was mostly good in the role of Marian. Acting wise she was great. She and Hugh played off each other fantastically. In fact there were 2 scenes that they both laughed during when they shouldn’t have. One during “Marian the Librarian” and another right before “Til There Was You”. In the second instance, Marian is mad because another salesman who is trying to get Hill in trouble tells Marian that Hill has a girl in every town so she’s mad at him, but Hill (not knowing what she’s mad about) reminds her that people aren’t always truthful and she has this huge revelation that the salesman could have been lying to turn her against Hill and when she realizes this she gives Hill a really big shove and boy did she ever go for it-- she almost knocked him over haha.
The song I liked the least was definitely “My White Knight.” You can find the lyrics here but basically she sang the end bit more like a threat than a romantic notion haha. it was just a little harsh in my opinion.
But the climactic scene at the footbridge (”Til There Was You”) when Hill discovers that Marian has known the truth (that he’s not a professor) all along was A++++++ so incredibly well done.
Also i wanted to say that the little boy who plays Winthrop (Marian’s little brother) was FANTASTIC. This kid was probably only 6-7 years old and he absolutely killed it.
But overall, I absolutely loved this. It was funny and fun and carefree and had so much amazing, incredible dancing that I want to go back and experience it all again.

Animators and Artist Friends,
I am burdened with having so many ideas for animatics and equally burdened with having no artistic talent nor the materials to make such things. Like, I have legit layouts and the whole sequences planned out in my head but no way to pull them off.
Therefore, here are my ideas for various animatics. Do with them as you wish:
FRUITS BASKET
“Wait for It” from Hamilton - from Shigure’s perspective
“Would You Be So Kind?” by dodie - progession of Kyoru throuout the series
“Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from The Lion King - Kyo and Tohru on the Kyoto field trip - Hana and Uo are Timon and Pumba of course
“Rewrite the Stars” from The Greatest Showman - Rin and Haru
“Wind in My Hair” from Tangled: The Series - Tohru’s life before Kyoko’s death (could likewise do the reprise for later on in the show)
“Slipping Through My Fingers” by ABBA - Kyoko and Tohru (both when she was alive and watching her in the afterlife)
“Lemon Boy” by cavetown - Kazuma and Kyo
“Speechless” from Aladdin (2019) - from Rin’s perspective
“Take It From an Old Man” from Waitress - Tohru’s grandfather talking to Kyo at the cemetary
MY HERO ACADEMIA
“Here’s to Us” by Halestorm - Class A the night before graduation (sung by Jiro, of course, as a toast)
“Lost in the Woods” from Frozen II - Kaminari singing his woes about Jiro or Shinso (make it funny as fuck - like the rest of the Class A boys are the choir)
“More Than a Band” from Lemonade Mouth - Class A to Midoriya
“Son of Man” from Tarzan - Class A growing and improving through their training to being pros
“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan - see “Son of Man”; Aizawa is obviously Shang
“When He Sees Me” from Waitress - At a Class A/B girl’s slumber party, Ochacho singing her woes
THE PROMISED NEVERLAND
“Sound the Bugle” from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron - Ray throughout the series (+ manga)
“Soldier, Poet, King” by The Oh Hellos - Ray is the Soldier, Emma the Poet, Norman the King
VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER
“Requiem” from Dear Evan Hansen - Pidge, Colleen, and Adam after Kerberos
“The Greatest Show” from The Greatest Showman - Team Voltron doing their promo tour/Voltron on Ice shows (Coran is Hugh Jackman and being super extra)
“Waiting in the Wings” from Tangled: The Series - from Allura’s POV, before she becomes a paladin
“Vuelie/Let the Sun Shine On” from Frozen on Broadway - The story of the OG paladins and Allura’s childhood

I watched the 1997 Cinderella last night and started wondering about modern casting choices if the masterpiece was remade.
These are all my completely unprofessional opinion lmfao! I tried to pick actors and actresses who also had some type of singing history. Next to each name I’ve listed a couple of their previous works that influenced my decisions.
Cinderella: China Anne McClain (A.N.T. Farm, the Descendants series)
The Prince: Charles Melton (Riverdale, The Sun Is also a Star)
Fairy Godmother: Jennifer Hudson (y’all already know her credentials omfg queen)
Stepmother: Idina Menzel (Rent, Frozen, Wicked)
Lionel: Jack Black (School of Rock, basically everything else he’s been in lmfao)
Queen Constantine: Alfre Woodard (The Lion King 2019, Luke Cage)
King Maximilian: Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables, The Last Showman)
Calliope (stepsister): Lilla Crawford (Into The Woods, Little Miss Perfect)
Minerva (stepsister): Coco Jones (Let It Shine, Grandma’s House)
Futhur explanations in the tags because I’m afraid of annoying my followers with a really long post 😅 thank you! Please respond with your opinions and suggestions!
#OKAY SO China Anne McClain? such a fantastic actress and singer and also beautiful af#i was stuck between her and keke palmer who is also amazing#but china ended up winning for me because she’s younger and brandy was very young when she did the movie (brandy was 18 and china is 22)#the prince was my hardest choice! i ended up going with charles melton because he’s a good actor and he’s hot af#also he’s pretty popular right now with his riverdale success but idk if he’s a good singer or not! i wanted telly leung at first but he 40!#jennifer hudson as fairy godmother is SUCH a good choice but it’s almost... TOO obvious of a choice?#idk if i should pick a less well-known actress? but jennifer def has it for now#idina menzel is AWESOME and has the perfect movie/broadway background to follow up a powerhouse like m’fuckin bernadette peters!#OKAY HEAR ME OUT JACK BLACK IS A GOOD SINGER AND HE HAS THE PERFECT GOOFY ENERGY FOR LIONEL#the only other good option i could thing about was josh gad so! please be happy with jack he is a GOOD MAN#alfre woodard is an amazing actress and just look at her? obviously she’s a queen she’s so stately#her and hugh jackman would look GREAT together and i really want to see hugh in that one ridiculous pink outfit lmfao#the stepsisters were also hard because they’re supposed to be ‘ugly’ and both of these women are beautiful af#but i went with coco and lilla because they fit the part and have really nice voices so u know they’ll sound good during the stepsister duet#cinderella#cinderella 1997#rodgers and hammerstein#rodgers and hammerstein cinderella#brandy#whitney houston#whoopi goldberg#bernadette peters#paolo montalban#jason alexander#china anne mcclain#charles melton#jack black#jennifer hudson#idina menzel#hugh jackman

@galatic-dragoness AHHHH thank you so much for asking! I have a LOT of honest opinions on it
The short answer is that I enjoy the 2012 movie a lot, and it’s the PERFECT way to get into Les Mis! (It’s on netflix in a lot of countries!)
But at the same time I don’t like the movie’s directing/cinematography, and think Tom Hooper’s directing weakened a really strong story.
So before I get into my issues with the film, here are some of my FAVORITE things about it:
I feel like the movie is a much better *intro* to Les Mis than the book or even the stage show. Again it’s the perfect place to start! (it’s on netflix in many countries?)
The story at its core is SO GOOD
Like at some point I don’t care....I see Valjean adopt Cosette and I’m sobbing like “they....were alll alone,,,, and they onLy hAD EACH OTHER!!”
There’s so much good Dad Valjean content in the movie
Like-- it’s a major plot point that Valjean is super buff from his years of hard labor as a convict. And in the movie there’s a moment where he lets Cosette swiiiiiiiiiing on his arm because he’s so buff that he doesn’t even feel her weight...... i die. i would die for this buff convict dad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love Anne Hathaway’s Fantine, Samantha Barks’ Eponine, and Eddie Redmayne’s Marius.
The big elaborate visuals!
Now we get to the stuff that I don’t like.
Tom Hooper, the guy who directed Les Mis 2012, is the same guy who directed the disaster that was Cats 2019. and it shows!
Hooper is obsessed with making musicals “realistic,” even though musicals are inherently unrealistic. Again, Cats 2019 vs its stage show:
Tumblr media
I’ll continue under the cut:
Tom Hooper takes things that are intentionally Theatrical and makes them ??? by trying to pointlessly force them to be “more realistic.” Wild theatrical cat costumes become nightmarish  “realistic” cats.
Tom Hooper doesn’t understand that being “more realistic” doesn’t equal being “better.” Being “more realistic” also does NOT equal being more genuine, or more emotional, or more expressive. If that makes any sense??
it’s like the 2D animated Lion King vs the CGI Lion King:
Tumblr media
2D-animated Simba is less “realistic,” but that makes him more expressive. His emotions are unrealistically exaggerated,  but that only makes them more instantly clear and relatable and powerful. By trying to force Simba to be more “realistic,” trying to tone down all the big exaggerated theatrical stuff, you utterly deaden the emotions of the scene.
Sometimes...........things that are “more realistic”..........are worse...
Ok so how does that apply to Les Mis 2012? Two ways:
FIRST:
Tom Hooper wanted the singing to be more “realistic.” Instead of big eXAGGERATED hyper-emotional broadway ballads, Hooper tried to have the performers sing quietly/subtly/”realistically.”  Sometimes this works (I Dreamed a Dream!), but in my opinion it often just ends up....awkward?
imho Hooper’s obsession with toning down all the songs to in order to make them “more realistic” weakens the emotions the songs are supposed to express, in the same way that pointlessly making Simba hyper-realistic made his character far less expressive.
Like, if you listen to any song from the stage musical...please let it be Bring Him Home!
If you have a couple minutes I recommend you pause in the middle of this overlong post and watch Hugh Jackman’s toned-down Bring Him Home:
youtube
And THEN watch Ramin Karimloo’s big Expressive hyper-emotional broadway ballad Bring Him Home:
youtube
If you don’t have time, just compare the way they sing the lines: “He’s like the son I might have known if God had granted me a son; the summers die one by one; how soon they fly on and on, and I am old and will be gone”:
That line starts 1:10 of the Hugh Jackman video and at 1:30 of the Ramin Karimloo video.
You can just skip to that if you don’t want to watch the whole thing, but still want to hear what I mean! It’s only a few seconds!
(But you could also watch the whole thing)
(I mean it’s a good song and the differences between the climaxes/endings of the song is really stark too!)
(really!)
(it’s really interesting)
(i mean it’s interesting to me--)
(i obsessively rewatched them like 20 times while writing this post)
---
Me every time I hear Karimloo sing “how soon they fly on and on”:
Tumblr media
To me it’s like-- the stage show’s emotions are all so much biGGER and bROADER, all the feelings are more EXAGGERATED....and in general the singing is so much more musical to listen to, lol. Again, it’s like super-expressive exaggerated Simba vs inexpressive realisitc Simba.
Some people say “the movie’s songs aren’t as good as the stage show’s songs because the actors sucked at singing” but I disagree; many of them were trained singers. I argue that most of the Weirdness in the music came from Tom Hooper directing his actors “you need to sing this crazy hyper-emotional broadway ballad in a Realistic(tm) way.”
Second:
Tom Hooper wanted the cinematography to be “realistic.”  So 90 percent of the movie is just close-ups! So many close-ups!!!
But close-ups aren’t always the best way to convey emotion, ESPECIALLY not in big musical  numbers. You’ll notice that well-made movie musical numbers-- like the ones in classic animated Disney movies-- usually feature big grand visuals that match the big grand emotions of the music.
And that’s what Les Mis needed, especially because Les Mis is about this powerful feeling of like....impossible isolation, and smallness in the face of things so infinitely greater than yourself.
There’s a post going around about how theater is very good at portraying loneliness:
Tumblr media
And it’s like, yeah! The feeling of loneliness/isolation why Les Mis works so well onstage!
But that got lost on film because of Tom Hooper’s bad cinematography.
The way to convey isolation on film is through wide shots of vast empty spaces showing how empty the character’s world is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But instead of doing that, Tom Hooper just shot everything in a close-up.
To go back to Bring Him Home--in the film it’s literally all closeups....no wide shots at all. It’s just 3 minutes straight of Closeups on Hugh Jackman being mildly sad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But on stage it’s like. This one man, all alone in the dark........on this vast empty stage...........seeming so small and powerless in the face of this huge empty  lonely overwhelming darkness.......ah!! I drew fanart of it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IMHO Tom Hooper’s choice to shoot the scene in All Close-Ups really weakens the power of the song.  You lose the feeling of smallness/powerlessness/isolation the song has in the stage musical.
Finally, I really don’t like the way the film handled Javert, one of my favorite characters in all fiction. But @ironicsnap already patiently let me yell at him about that here!!!  The TL;DR of my feelings on Javert is that the movie tried to make him seem like a reasonable guy, when in the stage musical he’s basically a feral disney villain.  I watch Russell Crowe Javert and I’m like “who is this sad puppy? He’s not javert! where is JAVERT, where is my deranged diva werewolf??????”
SO TL;DR
The movie is great and a perfect entry point into Les Mis!!
But there are so many GREAT aspects of the stage show that aren’t captured in the movie. So like, if you have any positive feelings about the movie, you should definitely check out the stage show! (there are so many soundtrack playlists and bootlegs on youtube-- i also might be able to link you to a bootleg if you dm me)
Or you could check out the book! Or the ANIME adaptation Shoujo Cosette!
youtube
Heck yeah Shoujo Cosette!
My point is that if you have any positive feelings about the movie, there’s so much more good Les Mis content out there to explore....and i encourage you to explore it!!!

My Quarantine Watchlist
hello! i hope this post finds you in good health. today i decided to go a little out of my category of what i usually post and make a movie watchlist. if you haven’t seen what i usually repost, i’m a huge movie buff, and are always adding new films to my watchlist. (you should add me on letterboxd! same username.) so, i compiled a list of my top 10 movies. some of them aren’t considered to be critically acclaimed, but they are still comforting and happy, especially during this rough time we are having. i hope you give these a try, and let me know what you think! disclaimer: i am not a movie expert! some terminology i use is definitely not correct lol.
1. rocketman - dir. dexter fletcher, 89%
this movie really means so much to me, it’s definitely one of my absolute favorites. taron egerton does an absolutely amazing job as elton john, not just through his performance but his through his singing. yes, he sings the music as well! the music is also perfectly placed throughout the movie to tell the story of elton john’s life.
synopsis: pretty self explanatory; a musical fantasy about the life of elton john.
2. onward - dir. dan scanlon - 87%
really awesome pixar movie! definitely a great movie for anyone who is a fan of animation, some of the most beautifully animated scenes i have ever seen! i guess that’s just pixar for you.
synopsis: a teenage elf ian lightfoot and his brother barley are given a spell to bring their late father back to life, but when they mess up the first time, they have to go on a quest to find a phoenix gem to bring him back.
3. eddie the eagle - dir. dexter fletcher - 82%
another masterpiece by the dexter fletcher and taron egerton! this is my favorite movie of all time. it’s so heartwarming and motivating, it’s a great pick-me-up film for when i’m feeling down. taron egerton is definitely a chameleon actor, and can slip into any role with ease! him and hugh jackman have such great chemistry, and this movie easily displays that.
synopsis: based on a true story, olympics-bound eddie edwards trains for the winter olympics as a ski jumper, one of the most dangerous sports in the world, with help from his drunken “coach,” bronson peary.
4. lady bird - dir. greta gerwig - 99%
ugh. this movie. i can’t! when i first watched it it left me speechless. it’s an outstanding coming-of-age film, and a great mother-daughter film as well. christine and her mom’s relationship is hilariously heartwarming. another touch i love is the grainy filter throughout the movie. it was a great touch to add an early 2000′s feel! saoirse ronan’s performance was extraordinary. everything about this movie is 10/10, and i cannot recommend this movie enough, especially to teenagers heading off the college.
synopsis: marion mcpherson, a nurse, works tirelessly to keep her family afloat after her husband loses his job. she also maintains a turbulent bond with a teenage daughter who is just like her: loving, strong-willed and deeply opinionated.
5. love, simon - greg berlanti - 92%
love, simon is a perfectly made film to demonstrate the experience of coming out as a gay teen. it’s funny and witty, with some heart-warming yet heart-wrenching drama. i can’t explain it, but this movie makes me feel things i didn’t think i could feel. nick robinson is a great actor, and this movie got paid dust!! by everyone!!
synopsis: everyone deserves a great love story, but for 17-year-old simon spier, it’s a little more complicated. he hasn’t told his family or friends he’s gay, and he doesn’t know the identity of the anonymous classmate that he’s fallen for online. resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying, and life-changing.
6. jojo rabbit - dir. taika watiti - 80%
when i first saw this movie in the theater, i wasn’t sure if i was going to like it. i’m not a fan of war movies and violence, so i was a little uneasy. turns out this could possibly be one of the best movies of 2019! roman griffin davis is the best child actor i’ve ever seen. this movie is a wonderful depiction of anti-hate, and of what life was like for germany during world war II. it shows in a funny way how silly nazi views are. it creates humor over such a sensitive subject, yet you don’t feel bad for laughing!
synopsis: a world war II satire that follows a lonely german boy whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young jewish girl in their attic. aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, adolf hitler, jojo must confront his blind nationalism.
7. little women - dir. greta gerwig - 95%
greta gerwig strikes again! she literally has never made a bad movie. this movie is based off of the famous novel little women. it has a star studded cast of timothee chalament, saoirse ronan, florence pugh, emma watson, and laura dern. the power of women!!
synopsis: in the years after the civil war, jo march lives in new york and makes her living as a writer, while her sister amy studies painting in paris. amy has a chance encounter with theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to jo but was ultimately rejected. their oldest sibling, meg, is married to a schoolteacher, while shy sister beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together.
8. the greatest showman - dir. michael gracey - 56%
my favorite original musical movie. hugh jackman is such an amazing singer and actor! this movie was one of the first movies that really turned me into a true film admirer. the music has some of the most beautifully written lyrics i know, and it’s a great family movie! it’s intense, yet happy, yet sad, yet exciting, yet every single emotion one person could feel.
synopsis: growing up in the early 1800s, p.t. barnum displays a natural talent for publicly and promotion, selling lottery tickets by age 12. after trying his hands at various jobs, p.t. turns to show business to indulge his limitless imagination, rising form nothing to create the barnum & bailey circus.
9. bohemian rhapsody - dir. bryan singer - 60%
although it may have it’s inaccuracies here and there, this movie is still heartwarming and conveys a heartwarming message and moral. rami malek performs as freddie mercury wonderfully, and the chemistry between the cast is indescribable. and what takes the cake? the live-aid re-enactment at the end of the movie, with the band’s mannerisms and everything recreated to the t.
synopsis: freddie mercury - lead singer of queen - defies stereotypes and convention to become one of history’s most beloved entertainers. the band’s revolutionary sound and popular songs lead to queen’s meteoric rise in the 1970s. after leaving the group to pursue a solo career, mercury reunites with queen for the benefit concert live aid - resulting in one of the greatest performances in rock ‘n’ roll history.
10. anchorman - dir. adam mckay - 66%
my favorite comedy of all time. will ferrell, steve carrell, and paul rudd are all my favorite comedians, so this movie speaks to me. it’s hilariously stupid, but i still love it and recommend it to everyone i know.
synopsis: hotshot television anchorman ron burgandy welcomes upstart reporter veronica corningstone into the male-dominated world of 1970s broadcast news - that is, until the talented female journalist begins to outshine burgandy on air.

The 30 Best Movies for Kids on Hulu
This post is updated regularly to reflect the latest movies to leave and enter Hulu, which you can sign up for here. *New additions are indicated with an asterisk.
You’re stuck at home, pushing the remote control through so many options on your smart TV, looking for something, anything, that you can use to distract the kids and not make you feel guilty. Let us help.
The truth is that none of the streaming services are particularly great at family options now that Disney+ has cornered that market, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great choices on Hulu. Here are 30 worthy films to distract the little ones or schedule an entire family movie night around (if you have the energy after homeschooling).
It may have some familiar story elements, but this 2019 film has some of the most gorgeous visuals in any recent animated movie, including a wave of flowers and the design of its lovable main character, a Yeti who needs the help of a girl and her friend to get back to his home at Mount Everest.
The weirdest animated story of the early days of the CGI form was the competition between DreamWorks with Antz and Pixar with A Bug’s Life — two films that the detail lives of the Earth’s smallest creatures in clever ways. Pixar seems to have won the longer battle, but there’s more to like here than you remember, including a strong voice cast and fun visuals.
Nancy Meyers co-wrote this clever family comedy about a successful woman who finds herself the unexpected mother of a 14-month-old baby girl when her long-lost cousin leaves her the child after her death. This may be for the slightly older kids, and some of its gender politics are dated, but Diane Keaton keeps it moving with her ace timing.
Exactly which titles Disney allows to jump from its streaming service to others doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but here’s the adventures of a sweet stunt dog named Bolt, the leading pup of this fun movie from 2008. John Travolta voices the dog who believes he actually has superpowers, which allow him to head out on a cross-country journey to save his owner, Penny.
Travis Knight of Laika fame (Kubo and the Two Strings) directed the best Transformers movie in this unexpectedly joyous spinoff of the massive Hasbro series of films. It’s a movie with the same kind of family-adventure spirit as ’80s classics of the genre, buoyed by fun performances from Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena.
Remember when movies were as simple as pitting felines and canines against one another? This 2001 family flick has been pretty much forgotten by history, but it was actually a pretty big hit at the time. Maybe you’re old enough to have some nostalgia for it or want to introduce it to your little ones now. Which side will they pick?
We don’t deserve Aardman. The geniuses behind Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, and others made their biggest cinematic splash with this 2000 hit. A clever riff on prison-break movies like Escape From Alcatraz (but with chickens!), this is actually the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time, a title it’s held for almost 20 years now.
Who doesn’t love the Man in the Yellow Hat and his lovable primate? This is the 2006 theatrically released version of the book series by H.A. Rey and Margret Rey that have been popular around the world for generations. With voice work by Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore, Eugene Levy, and many more, it’s a sweet adventure story for the whole family.
This live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon cartoon has no right to be as funny and clever as it is. It helps that newcomer Isabela Moner is a delightful lead as Dora, but there’s also a delightfully self-aware tongue-in-cheek tone to this film, one that’s funny without every taking itself too seriously. It’s a sweet family adventure movie that works equally for parents and little ones.
Maybe wait for the real little ones to go to bed first, but there are certainly some families that can handle this coming-of-age story from the master Steven Spielberg. Christian Bale stars in the story of a young boy whose life is changed forever when he becomes a prisoner of war in a Japanese internment camp.
It became something of a punch line, but this family film was huge when it was first in theaters. Who can’t relate to the story of trying to free a gorgeous animal like the orca that gives this movie a name? It made over $150 million on a $20 million budget and launched a franchise. Willy was freed to run all over pop culture.
From the director of Mad Max: Fury Road! The family filmmaker side of George Miller directed this musical comedy about penguins who basically have to stop the apocalypse with their dancing and singing. It’s not as good as the original, but it has some clever visuals, incredible voice work, and some good tunes to boot.
People often point to the Toy Story movies as the model for a great animated series, but credit should be given to the trilogy of movies about a boy named Hiccup and his dragon Toothless. The third and final film in this blockbuster series is already on Hulu, and it’s a gorgeous, heartfelt, moving final chapter to one of the best franchises of the 2010s, animated or live-action.
The LEGO Movie is one of the most creative and enjoyable animated films of the 2010s. The sequel may feel a bit too cluttered at times, but it retains enough of that energy to make it worth a look on Hulu, especially as all of our creative faculties have been reduced by the insanity of 2020.
This is not the Danny DeVito–voiced recent version but the 1972 short original that aired on TV about a thousand times when you were young. One of Dr. Seuss’s most beloved books gets a loving adaptation in this classic, a story of responsibility and environmental consideration that will never grow old, and should spark some memories for parents of the right age.
Look, a documentary! Yes, non-fiction films can be family ones too. In fact, it was that cross-demographic appeal to the story of the annual journey of emperor penguins in Antarctica to find their breeding grounds that made this such an amazing success, winning Best Documentary at the Oscars after making over $120 million worldwide. Having Morgan Freeman narrate always helps too.
Will Ferrell voices the title character, the supervillain who wants to get some of the credit and adoration of his superhero counterparts. After actually killing his superhero nemesis, Megamind learns that life isn’t worth living for a villain without a hero and ends up creating a villain even worse for him to defeat. A clever spoof of the superhero genre that would dominate the next decade of blockbusters, this movie plays even better now than in 2010.
We don’t give Laika enough credit. They don’t make nearly as much money with films like Paranorman and Kubo and the Two Strings as companies like DreamWorks and Pixar. Their latest is already on Hulu, dropping less than a year after its theatrical release. It may not be their best, but it’s gorgeous to look at, revealing the company that made it as arguably the most visually fascinating animated studio around.
My Dog Skip
This family dramedy from 2000 adapts the autobiographical book of the same name by Willie Morris. It’s the story of a 9-year-old who is given an adorable Jack Russell terrier on his birthday, whom he names Skip, and some formative chapters of his life that he shares with his pup. It’s a sweet coming-of-age movie with added interest for dog lovers.
Listen, this movie is kind of a disaster, but it’s always a fascinating disaster. Joe Wright directs this prequel telling of a new origin story for Peter Pan and Captain Hook, played by Garrett Hedlund. Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, and Levi Miller co-star in this undeniably strange blockbuster that seems to be gaining a reappraised following over the years. Why are people still talking about Pan? Check it out on Hulu and report back.
The Pink Panther 2
Let’s just politely call this one a gateway to better things. The sequel to the Steve Martin–led reboot of the Pink Panther series isn’t objectively “good,” but it may intrigue your kids enough to watch the brilliant Peter Sellers movies or even some of the original cartoons. And, heck, even if it makes them want to see more of Steve Martin, that’s probably a good thing too.
This was the first DreamWorks feature to be traditionally animated back in 1998 and was a bigger hit than you probably remember. It’s the story of the Book of Exodus and how Moses went from being just the title character to leading the children out of Israel. It’s a very pretty film visually and features some good music as well, but history seems to have forgotten it in the wake of how much Disney dominated the ’90s.
Gore Verbinski directed one of the best animated films on Hulu, this Oscar-winning featuring voice work by Johnny Depp in the lead role and some of the most inspired visuals in any animated film this decade. Rango is a chameleon who stumbled into a town called Dirt in this inventive riff on the Western genre that plays equally to children and adults.
Smallfoot
Channing Tatum wonderfully voices the lead character in this musical comedy from 2018. He plays a Yeti who descends from his cloudy mountain village and encounters a human — both realizing that the other species thought them a mythical creature. The visuals are engaging and the jokes are just clever enough to work for all ages.
Disney+ has stolen almost all the superhero movies but Sam Raimi’s original version of the webslinger is still on Hulu. Starring Tobey Maguire, this blockbuster doesn’t get enough credit for revitalizing the entire superhero genre in a way that plays to both parents and kids. It still rules.
This 2016 animated film is the story of how storks work to deliver babies, assisted by humans at a distribution center in the sky. One of those humans gets involved in a mistake when she creates a baby they’re not supposed to and end up having to help care for it with her stork partner. The visuals here are strong even if the story is slight. Still, it’s a creative story that you haven’t really seen before.
Not only is the beloved Tiny Toons series on Hulu, but so are several movies from the franchise: 1992’s Tiny Toons Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation, 1994’s Tiny Toons Spring Break Special, and 1995’s Tiny Toon Adventures: Night Ghoulery.
Yes, they made a movie about a creepy line of toys. No, it’s not a modern animated classic. But it is something recent that may get the attention of your kids. You can’t make them watch old shows and movies all the time. And sometimes they just want to see something that was in theaters not that long ago, especially given they can’t go out to one in 2020. So, what’s this about? You probably know. Dolls. They’re kind of ugly.
This 1988 TV movie actually landed 14 years after the end of The Brady Bunch, and reunited almost all of the original cast members (Cindy was recast. Poor Cindy). It’s pretty simple — reunite with the Bradys, this time around Christmas! With the kids all grown, Carol and Mike buy airline tickets so everyone can get together around Christmas, in-laws and grandchildren included. It’s likely to make you jealous in 2020.
Wonder Park
Paramount released this computer-animated flick in early 2019, which feels like a lifetime ago now. It’s a bit simple and silly, but that’s kind of all right in our current stuck-at-home situation. Wonder Park is the story of a girl who puts her imagination away when her mother gets sick and how an imaginary amusement park helps her find that creative spark again.

Pia Movie Special 2020 Winter Close Up Feature : Suezawa Seiya
Tumblr media
Entertainment interview
SUEZAWA SEIYA
"I want myself to grow as Franz"
From Kansai Johnny's Jr. unit Ae! group, Suezawa Seiya challenged roudugeki (reading theater) in his first solo starring.
While spreading an active place, even he, himself is most likely to be one of the audiences.
Leader of the group cut the challenge to his first solo stage
Formed in February 2019 which already has their own solo tour is a 6-man popular unit of Kansai Johnny's Jr. called Ae! group; it's Ae! group's member Suezawa Seiya. The stage performance "Bokura no Ae! group tte imasunen" which had a stage debut in Tokyo.
First of all, he was starring in the stage alone. The stage to be commemorated is the leading theather entitled "Kiosk". At first, "I was surprised, I thought it's a prank" it's surprisingly what I said. I heard about the work on stage from the manager but from there, I haven't heard anymore after that. I had no choice but to wonder what is it about. I was surprised because it was a starring (role).
First, I talked with my parents then, I talked about work with (Hamanaka) Bunichi-kun. When I called him and reported it, he said "really? that's great! do your best!". When I told it with the members, they said "congratulations!". Masakado (Yoshinori) jokingly said "lead role?" I've heard about it. Since it's really a lead role he said, "isn't it the opposite?". (laughs) (Fukumoto) Taisei said "I felt like crying", because of you, I have a reason to cry. (laughs) Richa (Kusama Richard Keita) was also pleased after a long time. Me and everyone was in high spirits, I'm really happy.
In the reading theater stage format which became the foothold to a full-pledged stage, since I've been working on a number of straight plays and musicals.
In the current stage performance, I haven't talked with Ishimaru-san yet. I don't know what kind of type it is so, I haven't clearly understood it. I think roudugeki (reader's theater) is the first challenge, I thought that there are many things that I need to know after I started practicing. Even if it says roudugeki (reader's theater), it is how much you use it while using your body. It's anxious and also fun, that's what I think.
The original work is by Robert Seethaler, an Austrian writer. It's a youth novel that's adapted into a film in Germany, I saw it as a reading theater (roudugeki). Suezawa plays the role of Franz who became an apprentice in a koisk when he was 17, the setting is drawn back in Vienna at 1937. He grew up surrounded by nature and came to visit Vienna. His mother's old friend is the kiosk's shopkeeper, the psychoanalysis founder, Sigmund Freud. He (Franz) fell in love with a mysterious girl.
It is a work depicting the youth during the time of Hitler's administration so, there was some feelings that comes in the end. There are lots of things that resonates the feeling, including the growth of Franz that will surely make you cry. Franz went through a lot of encounters during the time of the turmoil, learn various things from other people and becoming an adult. Franz's mother felt his growth thru their exchange of letters. I thought it's a story that is easy to get in touch with the nature while reading (it). Reading the script, I honestly felt that roudugeki (reader's theater) will be a challenge that I need to express firmly in narrating it to the audience. Vienna isn't particularly known in the image of music, from now on, I would like to know everything.
(He is) Currently 25 years old. The previous stage experience and the group's oldest (member), it's like his taste is like the youngest. It seems that the fluctuation of the 17 year old youth is delicately expressed.
Even now, there are a few roles from the actual age. (In a performance) Starring Bunichi-kun, I played a role of a 10 year old (boy). I'll try to challenge (myself) and play much younger roles as possible, I thought I need to do it well. For Franz's character, I had an impression of a simple, pure young man who came from the countryside. If you think about your own character, you need to remember that it's necessary to play it a lot purely is what I've thought. (laughs) It's not that I'm not pure but, I want to remember the feeling when I was still young. I want to improve myself with Franz.
Starring from behind his seniors
Co-starring with seniors and juniors from Johnny's office, it's the first challenge to be in a stage play without his fellow. In that sense, is there a sense of pressure and nervousness?
That's right. Because until now there's Bunichi-kun and Yara (Tomoyuki)-kun....... Of course there is pressure but, I don't think to much of it. "It's okay if you do not have to be aware that you're starring", I have received these words from my co-actor Ichiro Maki-san. It's the lead role but, of course I want to have a feeling that I can share with everyone. Ichiro-san said "I thought that I'm (your) real mother" since I've also said it (to her), I hope that I can consult with her again. From the previous experience, I wonder if each person's position as the lead character is different. Yara-kun liven up everyone with a friendly atmosphere. Bunichi-kun is a shy person so, he isn't the type who's lively but he creates the mood of the place and someone who you can be relied on. What they have in common is that they don't make others feel uneasy, I want to emulate it. Anyway, both of us don't show everyone that a lot.
I have gained a career not only in musicals but also in straight play. It says that in which you feel the charm of the stage while gaining experience is when you can say "it's a living place".
It's fun because there's no exact same performance. In every curtain call you'll feel a sense of achievement when you hear the audiences clapping. You'll absolutely don't get tired performing for each and every person. I'm still lacking in my ability. Yara-kun and Bunichi-kun have trained me and I feel that I'm changing little by little. When I went out on an external stage, I was rather negative but, both of them changed me conciousness. After I've changed my way of thinking into positive, the stress got reduced and the way I went to practice had changed.
He talks about stress "I thought it's because I can't do things". Someone said "winning is better when you're having fun".
Of course there are lots of things we can't do yet but now, having fun is much better. It became decisive. Before the first day of "Skellig", Bunichi-kun left me a phrase "it's better to throw away (that) pride". He said with a serious face "because of that, this stage play will not succeed". I might probably ashamed of myself, I think I didn't tell everything. Even from the practice you can feel Bunichi-kun's compassion. In front of everyone, he let me do something that when I'll be able to pull it out, I'll be able to go out.
This time it's the reading theater, it's supposed to be a performance using a loud voice and shows the attractiveness of one's individuality at the end.
Because of a loud voice, I want to make a song with the high tone portion but I'm anxious whether this voice will be on the reading performances. (laughs) Should I drop the key (pitch) or is it good to change the setting into Franz's? I thought it'll be different in the way of how you'll express it such as irregularity and the way you'll say it. Also, everyone start after the beginning of the practice. Now it's exciting and feeling nervous, it evenly matches the (current) status in the case of musical, straight play and this time roudugeki (reading theather). I want to try different genres so this time, I want to learn a lot!
I'm touched everytime I watch my favorite musical movie
(We'll) Transfer to the topic of his favorite movie when the title "Les Miserables" (2012) was mentioned.
I really love it! I have watched it at the cinema. I even bought the DVD and watch it repeatedly and still get touched everytime (I watched it). Everyone in the cast is singing on the spot, isn't it great!? In that sense, I've watch the stage play and even the pictures emits impact, I feel overwhelmed. Hugh Jackman is also starring in "The Greatest Showman" (2017) wherein I'm also moved (in the performance) so, I think I like musicals. If there would be a chance, I want to try starring in a musical movie someday.
The leading work of Fujiwara Tatsuya is being pulled in Japanese Movies
A splendid actor can be everyone but I think it's great to be a completely different person for each work. I felt attracted that only Fujiwara-san has that kind of voice and acting. About Ninagawa Yukio-san's stage play, I read in an interview that you should learn how to speak even if your voice is muted. I still thought that it's a difficult experience. It's hard to choose what's my favorite among his works, I've read the original (work) so I couldn't forget Death Note (2006). About the image, I've read the manga and Fujiwara-san has a great impact.
As I have been active in stage plays, I'm still inexperienced when it comes to drama, movie and video but I'm interested so if I'll be offered a work I'll immediately reply "I'm eager to do it!". One of my big dreams was to work together with my admired senior, Kimura Takuya-san.
My mother has been a fan for a long time and so it became my admiration. I think I'll be greatfully devoted.
Next spring they'll broadcast "Kyojo" (CX/20) starring Kimura Takuya. Is there a jealousy with Naniwa Danshi's Nishihata Daigo......?
I immediately contacted Daigo! I said "congratulations" and he also talked about me. (laughs) Even though (he) saw Kimura-san during Johnny (Kitagawa)-san's farewell party, Daigo's sly. (laughs) He had also co-starred with his admired (senior), Ninomiya (Kazunari)-kun. I'm thinking that I'll do my best so that someday I can be his co-star. If I can be his co-star, any role would be fine! I'll be glad to be in the same work but if possible, it would be great if we'll be on the same scene together even just for a moment. He's so cool in "Grand Mason Tokyo" (TBS/2019).
For the group, I want to be active as an actor
From now on, my dream is to expand the role that I want to play.
I'm watching various works with roles that are crazy and psychopath. I want to do it for quite some time now, it looks difficult but it's interesting. It's a dark role because there isn't much dark role on myself so, I think I'm just attracted to such characters.
Nishihata Daigo is the first, from the same (group) Naniwa Danshi, Michieda Shunsuke and Nagao Kento had appeared in drama and movies. Also from Ae! group, Masakado had appeared in the drama "Koi no Yamai to Yarougumi" (BS Fuji terebi/2019) expanding the places were they're active, it seems to be a good motivation.
Takahashi Kyohei (Naniwa Danshi) had appeared in "24 Jikan Terebi" drama entitled "Kizuna no Pedal" (NTV/2019). He's good, I thought that "I won't loose". Ae! group still hasn't explored the field of drama and movies so, I want to continue further. Also, all active activities as an actor will be an opportunity (for people) to get interested in the group, I think it's important. (In) My group, Richard is strong when it comes to variety and also because every member is individualy strong. I want to increase the number of entrances for people to know about (our) group in different genres. That's for the group, I believe it will also be for our own.

25 Times Alison Hammond Was Basically The Best Thing About British TV
Tumblr media
Alison Hammond
With her infectious laugh, naughty sense of humour and incredible interview style that can have even the most notoriously difficult A-listers in stitches, Alison Hammond is real one-off.
After finding fame as a housemate on Big Brother in 2002, Alison was quickly signed up as a roving reporter for This Morning, and made appearances on the likes of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing.
In recent years, her fame has skyrocketed after a much-deserved promotion to one of the main hosts on This Morning alongside Dermot O’Leary, as well as her role on the BBC’s I Can See Your Voice, which has even seen her nominated for a Bafta.
In fact, we’d go as far to say that she’s basically now the best thing about British telly – and here’s 25 clips that prove it...

Andrew Scott Reveals His Dark Materials’ Chilling Behind-the-Scenes Secret: Show Tunes
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
His Dark Materials is the Dune of the TV world, which is to say: extremely selfish with its cast. As if His Dark Materials didn’t already have more than its fair share of charismatic talent in Season 1, they’ve gone ahead and added Andrew Scott to Season 2 of the epic fantasy series as Colonel John Parry. (Scott’s Fleabag boss and co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be voicing his character’s daemon, which, again: let other shows have some talent, would you?)
I jest, of course. It’s been one of 2020’s few joys to see the second season of this show come together because, in addition to getting all of the on-screen perks of such an amazing ensemble, we also get to hear all about the behind-the-scenes shenanigans our faves were up to while filming back in pre-COVID times. Speaking of which, Scott was on hand during a recent promotional panel for His Dark Materials Season 2 (which just launched on BBC in the U.K. and will launch on HBO in the U.S. next Monday) to talk about his experiences on set. We already knew from the SDCC at Home panel that Scott spent a lot of time with co-star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays Texan aeronaut Lee Scoresby in the series, but now we know what they were up to. Yes, filming His Dark Materials, but also singing show tunes between takes…
When Lee Scoresby met John Parry⁰@Lin_Manuel #AndrewScott pic.twitter.com/30LbGCNqlv
— His Dark Materials (@daemonsanddust) August 19, 2019
“A lot of the scenes that I’m in with Lin-Manuel Miranda are in a parachute, and it’s a small space and you’re going through a storm so they just throw buckets of water on you from five o’clock in the morning, on. The rest of the day. It goes on for days,” said Scott good-naturedly of the shooting conditions (at around the 27-minute mark in the below video). “It’s quite a weird atmosphere being in a green screen studio because you lose sense of time and light and all that kind of stuff. It is hard. So Lin and I just sang show tunes.”
Miranda and Scott weren’t the only ones getting in on the show tunes action. In a recent interview with EW, Miranda mentioned that Dafne Keen, who plays Lyra on the series, came to His Dark Materials already with some behind-the-scenes show tunes experience.
“Her other big project prior to this was Logan with Hugh Jackman,” said Miranda, “so she was very comfortable singing show tunes between takes. I dropped right into the Hugh Jackman track of her life. It was like, Oh, yeah, we’ll sing some Oliver! while we wait for the next set up.”
These days, a green screen is not an uncommon working condition for actors, especially when it comes to big-budget TV and film projects. For His Dark Materials, which features fantastical settings and also daemons, aka physical manifestations of a human’s soul that take the form of animals, actors have a bit more work to do when imagining what their character might be seeing.
“It can be quite weird and boring, actually, so you really do have to exercise your imagination because you’re sort of flying and you’re imagining that you’re looking at these great, big cities,” said Scott of the green screen experience. “Particularly, with the daemons, they have a thing called a ‘puppet pass,’ which is a take that you do with the puppets, so that the extraordinary puppeteers are able to go in. And, really, it’s very good for us actors because you can really imagine what way the daemons are going to behave and they’re really experts at what they do. And, you know, it’s all playfulness, so having a little puppet to act with is really fun.”

Hugh Jackman dare to change the world shirt
New concert series Hugh Jackman dare to change the world shirt . and theatrical production. which she’s performing at the Shed in New York City’s Hudson Yards for the next month, is touted as her most ambitious yet. The Icelandic singer herself describes it as a place where “the acoustic and digital will shake hands.” It’s perhaps why the opening minutes of the show, which clocks in at close to two hours in total, feel surprisingly unplugged. A young Icelandic choir, dressed in simple, almost folkloric garb, take the stage and sing a few songs. Then an animated version of Björk is projected onto the silvery threads that hang down across the stage like a moveable curtain. Those glitzy, jewel-encrusted, body-conscious outfits are a far cry from anything you’d expect Björk to wear in her everyday life, let alone onstage. But Rousteing has been a fan of Björk since her debut album—her Dancer in the Dark is his favorite movie, too—and Björk says that once she saw Rousteing’s couture collection (the designer revived the house’s haute couture atelier this past winter), she felt they were working within the same visual vocabulary. “It was a curious feeling after me and James Merry had been swirling around in our utopian hemisphere for a while to see Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain collection a few months ago and witness such an obvious overlap between both of our headspaces,” Björk says over email before her show last night. “We had been looking for plantlike uniforms for habitants of this sci-fi concert, and we were thrilled when we found it. POLICE IDENTIFY VICTIMS IN DOUBLE MURDER - Police have identified the victims in tonight’s double homicide at Rices, St Philip. They are 52-year-old Betty Mayers and her 32-year-old son Jamal Mayers of the same address.  Lawmen have cordoned the immediate scene and restricted movement of vehicular traffic along Rices main road. (DN)
UPDATE: DOUBLE MURDER AT RICES, ST PHILIP – The murder toll increased to 18 this evening after two people were shot at Rices, St Philip. According to Acting Police Inspector Rodney Inniss, 52-year-old Betty Mayers and her son, 32-year-old Jamal Mayers were found lifeless at their residence. Inniss said that around 8 p.m. they received a call that two masked men were seen at a house in the community. On arrival at the house, lawmen discovered the motionless body of a female at the front door and upon further investigations they found the body of a male on the outside. “When the ambulance arrived, the EMTs [Emergency Medical Technicians] and the paramedics confirmed there were no signs of life, ” he said. Inniss appealed to residents or anyone with information about the incident to contact Police Emergency at 211, or any police station and Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477. “Anything that you have heard, anything that you know, however small we are appealing to people to let us know what is going on,” he urged. (BT)
CHANGES IN PETROLEUM PRICES FOR MARCH – Effective midnight Sunday, March 17, the retail prices of gasoline and diesel will increase, while the price of kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas will remain unchanged. The retail price of gasoline will be adjusted from BDS $3.56 per litre to $3.57 per litre, an increase of 0.01 cent.  The price of diesel will increase by 0.20 cents per litre, moving from $2.89 per litre to $3.09 per litre.  Kerosene will continue to retail at $1.40 per litre. Liquefied petroleum gas will continue to retail as adjusted at December 2, 2018. The 100lb cylinder will retail for $163.07, the 25lb cylinder at $45.87, the 22lb cylinder at $40.53, and the 20lb cylinder at $36.84. These price adjustments are in keeping with Government’s policy of allowing retail prices to be reflective of those on the international market. (BGIS)
US$85 000 A MONTH – THE MIA MOTTLEY ADMINISTRATION will save more than a billion dollars in principal and interest savings in its restructuring of Barbados’ debt, but it is paying a high price for the advice to achieve it. According to the engagement letter available on Parliament’s website, Government has agreed to pay White Oak Advisory Ltd US$85 000 (BDS$170 000) per month to help Barbados navigate the situation. The engagement letter, dated last May 30, between the globally-recognised company and Government was laid in Parliament at the start of the recently concluded annual Estimates Debate on February 18. It was laid by Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn, for public record in response to Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley’s request for information about it.   (DN)
ROCK HARD BRACES -The cement war may not be over after all. Seems Rock Hard Cement is preparing for another fight from the western hemisphere’s largest cement producer, CEMEX. Rock Hard scored a major victory in its war with Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL) and its Barbados-based subsidiary Arawak Cement Ltd last week, when CARICOM’s Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), along with the World Customs Organisation (WCO), determined that the cement product Rock Hard imported from Turkey should be classified as “other hydraulic cement”. But executive chairman of Rock Hard, Mark Maloney, told the DAILY NATION he was bracing for another fight from CEMEX, the parent company of TCL, which controlled most of the market share in the cement business in the Caribbean. (DN)
BOSTIC KNOCKS UNWILLING HANDS – Member of Parliament for The City, Jeffrey Bostic, had a tongue-lashing for some of his constituents last night, who he said were not stepping up to the plate in helping him carry out his plans. He also lamented that many of his initiatives were being set back due to the upsurge of violent crimes in City hotspots like Chapman Lane and New Orleans. Saying he was “just one man”, Bostic, who is also Minister of Health and Wellness, urged those who were making many demands on him to “wake up”. (DN)
NUPW CELEBRATES 75 YEARS – The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) celebrated its 75th anniversary with a service at Collymore Rock Church of the Nazarene this morning.  Invited guest Colin Jordan, the Minister of Labour, said the union and the Barbados labour Party shared parallels in their desire to improve the lot of workers in Barbados and lauded the union for its theme “75 years of Consistent Representation and Growing with Technology”.  “I think it is appropriate that the NUPW, recognising that workers are the foundations of the building of a country, society and economic structure, also recognises that people . . . have to interact with technology. [Your theme] tells me the union recognises times are changing and even though people will remain the most important aspect of any country, it has to embrace the changes developing technology brings,” he said.  Union president, Akanni McDowall also said the theme was relevant as it challenged them to blend the old and the new and moved them not to rest on their laurels but to be on the forefront of re-educating the union’s membership in light of an ever changing working environment fuelled by technical advancement. He then urged the members to take part in the upcoming activities while outlining his wishes going forward.  “It is my wish that prosperity is restored to the nation and we will endeavour to make our contribution, however small, to nation building. I wish we redouble our efforts in thought, word and deed to move our nation forever forward, onward and upward – inspired exalted, free,” he said.  The sermon was conducted by Pastor David Holder who warned the congregation not to forget God in good times or bad as this leads to a pointless life. He urged the congregation to then make a fresh commitment to God. (DN)
LATAPY ON BOARD – Barbados’ football is set to get a magical touch. Trinidad and Tobago legend Russell “The Little Magician” Latapy is expected to be announced as head coach of the Barbados senior national football team later this week. While president of the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Randy Harris is keeping details close to his chest ahead of a planned media conference at the BFA’s Wildey, St Michael headquarters on Wednesday, high-level sources close to the situation confirmed the stunning development yesterday afternoon. (DN)
WHEELCHAIR WARRIORS A HIT – The fans who stayed away missed a treat. Wheelchair bodybuilding made a rousing, historic first appearance in Barbados at the season opening Flex Championships on Saturday night at the Derrick Smith Vocational School in Jackmans, St Michael. Exemplying courage and defying all odds, the wheelchair competitors, spearheaded by a razor-sharp Randy Mathurin, stole the spotlight at the three-dimensional event which also showcased the Mr and Miss Fit Model along with the programme opening Children’s Fitness. Mathurin, who caught the attention of the audience with his rock-hard back and bulging tri-ceps, may have been the headline act, but this was a night that will be remembered for the steely resolve of the 11 wheelchair entrants, three of them female.  (DN)
BUJU BANTON DELIVERS BIG AT LONG WALK TO FREEDOM CONCERT – For two hours Saturday night, reggae artiste Buju Banton, whose given name is Mark Myrie, belted out hit after hit at his Long Walk to Freedom concert at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. If there were questions about his state of mind and his ability to perform in front of a sold out crowd, after almost a decade in isolation, Buju put those to rest, breezing through his extensive catalogue of musical masterpieces.   Dressed in an all-white ensemble, Banton entered the stage with a pensive look on his face, and that was enough to indicate that he meant business. He opened his set with a worship song asking, “Lamb of God, have mercy on me”. He then smoothly transitioned into Not An Easy Road, a song many thought would have been his track of choice, based on all he has had to overcome. As he sang through the lyrics of the song, the crowd went wild. Hits like Destiny, Champion, Driver, Untold Stories and Wanna Be Loved had the crowd singing and rocking along. And he was not alone as he wrote a piece of entertainment history. The Gargamel’s set involved several collaborations as he invited the likes of Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, Wayne Wonder and Gramps Morgan to share the stage. (BT)
