Ducati 1-2 on Day 1 of the Prosecco DOC Catalunya Round
Alvaro Bautista leads teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi on Friday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Championship leader was 0.147s quicker than Rinaldi. Michael Ruben Rinaldi finished second on Friday with a fastest time of 1’41.633s set in the morning session. Jonathan Rea concluded Friday’s running in third place only 0.166s behind Bautista. He was one of many riders unable to improve in the afternoon session. The sun shone strongly at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship on Friday, with the field taking to the circuit with a track temperature approaching 50 degrees. Come the end of the day, it was Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) who was in a league of his own, with a strong lap time at the end of the session being the icing on top of a strong race run cake. With an additional 20 degrees of track temperature, it was somewhat unsurprising to see the Ducatis so strong on Friday afternoon. Alvaro Bautista remains the rider to beat over the long distance however, with a strong race pace in the morning and in the afternoon, with a run of 14 laps achieved in the 1’42s in FP1, more than his rivals. In the afternoon, Bautista did a 16-lap run, all of which were in the low-to-mid 1’42s before going out and setting a 1’41.486 to set the outright best time of the day, which will certainly make his rivals sit up and look. Teammate Rinaldi was second at the end of the day but didn’t improve his time at the end. Fastest in the first session in the morning, Michael Ruben Rinaldi came out the blocks fighting from the start and that translated into the afternoon too, as he was once again one of the riders to beat. Jonathan Rea’s (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) afternoon wasn’t as strong as his morning session, with Rea outside of the top ten in 11th place for a lot of the session before ultimately finishing third. Due to everyone else struggling to better their opening time, Rea took third overall, but he’ll be fighting for the podium or the top five if race pace from the afternoon is anything to go by. As for the blue corner, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) was third on the combined times but was inside the top five throughout FP2, as he enjoyed the heavy braking areas of Turn 1 and Turn 10. The Turk hasn’t won in Barcelona but will hope that he can turn that around this weekend. Teammate Andrea Locatelli’s afternoon saw him strong inside the top nine but he crashed at Turn 5. Losing the front, it was a typical Turn 5 tumble, but it was a costly error, as a new SC0 tyre needed to be tested and time is always of the essence. At the end of the day, Razgatlioglu was third and Locatelli remained sixth. It was a strong opening day for Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) and Honda, as they always shine in Barcelona – whether it is testing or not. Lecuona’s pace was in the 1’42s, and a solid effort will hope to be rewarded throughout the remainder of the weekend. As for teammate Xavi Vierge, he crashed in FP1 at Turn 1 but remounted but he wasn’t quite there in the afternoon, down in 12th, one place behind teammate Iker Lecuona. Come the end of the day however, they were still fifth and eighth and that will be filling Leon Camier’s team with confidence going forwards. WorldSBK action resumes on Saturday with FP3 from 09:00 (Local Time), followed by Tissot Superpole at 11:10 and Race 1 at 14:00.
WorldSBK Combined Results after FP2 1. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) 1’41.486s 2. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +0.147s 3. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) +0.166s 4. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) +0.233s 5. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) +0.582s 6. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) +0.593s
P1 | Alvaro Bautista | Aruba.it Racing - Ducati | 1'41.486s “For sure, I think it has been very positive especially because we were focused on race pace. In the morning, I tried the new spec that Pirelli brought here on the front. I didn’t have really good feedback on the tyre, but the bike was working more or less like normal. We decided to use it for the race distance to see how it was at the end. It was quite consistent, but the feeling was not too good from the beginning. Also, on the rear with the SCX tyre, it was maybe not the best moment to use it, but we wanted to use it just to see how it was for the race distance. I felt a big drop this morning so, in the afternoon, we used the SC1 on the front; I like this tyre. Suddenly, I found a good feeling with the bike and the bike worked like it did in the test or the other rounds. In the rear, with the 800, we did 16 laps and it was better than the SCX in the morning. The grip was not very different, but I think the tyre life was a bit better, I could be more consistent with the lap times. I was able to do many mid-1’42s, which is a good pace especially because this afternoon the conditions were a bit difficult. With this heat, the grip is very low, and you have to be very precise.”“I saw the lap times from the other riders and I think my teammate, Rinaldi, can fight for victory. We can’t forget Toprak and Jonathan. Maybe today they were not super fast in race pace but tomorrow and on Sunday they will be there. We have to pay attention to Aegerter. He had a really impressive pace and also Lecuona. They are two riders who can fight, at least, for a podium.” For more info checkout our dedicated World Superbike News page World Superbike News Or visit the official World Superbike website WorldSBK.com Read the full article

World SBK Phillip Island - Race 1
On the 23rd of February, the first race of the first round in the World Superbike Championship started in Phillip Island, Australia.
Marco Melandri started well, catapulting himself through the starting grid. Rookie Alvaro Bautista went from 3rd to 1st before the Honda corner. Tom Sykes went too wide in the first few corners, allowing Alex Lowes through. Also in the first round, Camier passed Laverty for 10th place and Haslam passed Rea for 2nd in the Honda corner.
Micheal van der Mark went from 9th back to 7th, the position he started on, now followed by Melandri, his teammate. That same time in the front, Bautista got his pace up and built a 2.548 second gap to both Kawasaki boys, still 19 laps to go. Also, Toprak Ratzgatrioglu fought with Lowes for 4th position, although he had started p13 on the grid.
Bautista built even a bigger gap with still 17 laps to go. Melandri was only like 0.002 seconds behind Van der Mark, who fought to keep up the pace with the Kawasaki boys, Lowes and Razgatrioglu. Melandri did pass the Dutchman. Haslam built a little gap away from Rea, but not enough to shake his teammate off.
With another 16 to go, Bautista got a 4.3 gap to p2 to p5. The Kawasaki’s fought fiercely for p2, as only one could have it.
With 14 to go, Leon Camier crashed out of the race, not returning to finish.
Haslam’s doing well in the Honda corner, keeping his teammate at bay. But on a straight part, Rea uses a slipstream to pass Haslam. Sykes seems to be getting closer, but is still p6.
Bautista isn’t even visible anymore, his gap to the group p2 to p5 is above 9 secs! Not bad for a superbike rookie of age... But hey, he’s got experience form his MotoGP years.
Van der Mark is upping his pace, pushing his Yamaha to a limit. He’s going faster than both Kawa’s.
Then... bad luck for Haslam. He crashed out in the Honda corner, loosing his chance of a podium on his Kawasaki debut. He lost the front end and slid into the gravel. He went back to p16 after getting up. Still 10 laps to go...
Melandri is being tailed by Van der Mark, pushing and pushing. Rea is also pushing, though there’s a 10 second gap in front of him to the first man in this race. But Razgatrioglu is losing his pace quickly, it seems like he’s slowing down. At that point, Melandri and Van der Mark arrived near Razgatrioglu and Sykes, who’d been caught cruising.
With only 7 laps to go, a battle between those four emerged! Raz get passed by both Yamaha’s. Then Melandri passes Sykes, the Dutchman following suit.
Only 6 to go.
Bautista has built up a 14 second gap to the main group, Davies doesn’t do well on this Australian circuit, Melandri is pushing his gas to keep Van der Mark behind him.
Only 3 laps to go.
Troy Herfoss stopped last round, I think it was a problem rather than a crash.
Sykes passed Raz, finally, only 2 laps to go. Also, Melandri passed Lowes. It’s looking good for Yamaha.
Phillip Island seems to be Bautista’s circuit, he’s cruising out in front! Yet Davies is even losing more places. Melandri and Lowes make the end of this race still a sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat part. It’s more often that nothing changes in the last round since the bikes aren’t that close to each other.
And now, who won?
Of course: Alvaro Bautista! He’s the first rookie since Max Biaggi to win his rookie race in the World Superbike Championship.
In 2nd place: Jonathan Rea, Melandri took the last podium spot before Lowes and Van der Mark. Haslam still takes some points, taking in p15.

Lorenzo Savadori can’t be stopped on Day 1 Down Under
Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) stole the headlines and the timesheets on Day 1 of the Yamaha Finance Australian Round, leading the charge to Tissot-Superpole 2 with a 1:30.407 set in FP2 to go fastest overall. Behind the Noale factory machine at the top, Leon Camier (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) took P2 for Honda as he debuts with the Japanese marque, just clear of the second Aprilia machine of Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia).
With early morning drizzle, a dry FP2 and then rain once again in the afternoon ahead of the final session of the day, track conditions changed throughout Day 1 but did end dry. Regardless, the best laptime set by Savadori in FP2 remained at the top of the timesheets, unthreatened.
Behind the Aprilia-Honda-Aprilia lockout at the top, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) took fourth and was the fastest Kawasaki machine, just under a tenth faster than teammate and reigning champion Jonathan Rea. Rea was the first on the timesheets to set his quickest effort of the day in FP3, moving up a couple of places towards the end of play. Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) finished up the first track action of the race weekend in P6 after topping a damp FP1, just ahead of 2014 WorldSSP Champion Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team), who was the fastest Yamaha.
Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) led a trio of riders who improved in FP3 as he ended the day in P8, just ahead of fellow Panigale rider Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati). Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) completed the top ten, with the Brit having crashed in FP2 on his first flying lap but able to get back out in FP3 and secure his place in Tissot-Superpole 2.
Jake Gagne (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) was the man to just get pushed out, but the American made a solid debut at the track despite a crash late on Friday from which he escaped unscathed. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was P12 and will be another rider pushing hard to move through from Tissot-Superpole 1 on Saturday – with Jordi Torres (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) and Friday crasher Loris Baz (GULF ALTHEA BMW Racing Team) waiting in the wings to try and make it every manufacturer in the top 12 on the grid.
After FP4 bright and early on Saturday, only Tissot-Superpole will remain between the grid and lights out for Race 1. Qualifying begins from 12:30 local time (GMT `+11), and the first race of the 2018 season gets in gear at 15:00.
#AUSWorldSBK at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit: Friday 1. Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) 1:30.407 2. Leon Camier (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) +0.315 3. Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia) +0.339

Dukart Pasaulio „Superbike“ (WSBK) čempionas Jonathanas Rea pirmas naujojo sezono lenktynes Australijoje pradėjo pergale. Britas vos 0,04 sek.
