I was wondering, why are Casey and Cassandra in Japan?
Watsonian reason: Someone needed to deal with the key and the foot. the turtles and splinter got wrecked by the krang fight. April is staying to help with their recovery and she still has college. So the Casey's are the only people that can drop everything and go to japan
Plus family bonding trip!
Also we got the idea from ell.
Doylist reason: Didn't want to write them. They, as characters, wouldn't contribute in any way outside of the very end of the last arc. So they'd just be bloat. They're more useful outside the narrative than in it.
Also the original draft had casey jr be straight up non-existant.

You ever think about how 03 Splinter literally didn’t have to stay in third earth New York? Like, he knew how to make a portal to travel to the Nexus, was sit-at-my-right-hand level of friends with the Diaymo. It feels like he literally could have rolled up shortly after mutation, said “Hey Bro, this wild thing happened and I need a place to go where me and my brood won’t be dissected if caught”.
I reason it is because Splinter is too wildly polite that he couldn’t force himself to impose on his friend like that. Or by the time it occurred to him, they were kind of already settled as a family and it felt more disruptive to try and move. It’s just something I think about sometimes.

The 2012 Hamato Clan in their 20s
I got this idea from someone on discord. I thought it was so cool I had to give it a try!
Now that his brothers are less likely to accidentally kill themselves and Earth is at peace, Leo’s enjoying not being the parent for once, though he often still slips into his role as head of the family and mediator of chaos. He’s kinda given up on love and as accepted is role as “Cool, but also very dorky uncle.” I imagine he’s a lot like Iroh.
Raph has gone full Dad. Mona help’s him raise Chompy and I’d imagine that they adopted more weird alien/mutant kids as time goes on. Him and Leo still spar all the time to stay fit and go on crime busting adventures together with Casey. Raph travels back and forth between Earth and Salamandria every year so Mona can visit her family, and so Mona can show him her home.
Donnie has leaned into his “mad scientist” persona and has used the internet to release he’s discoveries about mutagen, the Kraang, the Triceratons, and everything else. He teaches science online for extra cash and builds his wildest dreams into existence. He too has kind of given up on love, being burned out by his self inflicted drama with April. Though little does he know one of his female students has a crush on him (even though she’s never seen his face) and is attempting to track him down.
Mikey hasn’t grown up, and never will. He still skateboards in the lair, and plays Mazes and Mutants with Ice Cream Kitty. Donnie introduced him to online gaming and he loves it. He’s got a team of other gamer friends (including Mondo Gecko) who he talks/plays with almost every night. He’s still to this day trying to convince everyone that Pizza Milkshake isn’t that bad even though Murakami-San told him that “some things are just not meant to be.”
April has gone to college to be a bioengineer as a pursuit of her passions in science. Casey plays for the professional hockey team that plays at April’s college. He was offered more money on a different team, but he would’ve had to move out of New York, so he stayed and after a few months, proposed to April. She said yes.
Karai is still the leader of the Foot Clan alongside her best friend Shinnigami. She hangs out with the Hamato clan all the time, usually coming over for dinner. Every six months, however she has to go back to Tokyo to manage the Foot Clan in Japan. Everyone is always happy when she finally comes back and they throw a party.
Splinter is smiling upon them.

Karai: Guys! I missed you so much!
Donnie: Really? Because when you left, you made a pretty big deal about deleting us from your phone.
Karai: That was just the drama queen in me. Japan is so boring. I need some Hamato family drama, stat.
Leo: I don't think we're that dramatic.
Karai: I've been gone one week. Raph and Mona Lisa are dating and they've killed a guy.

We know how Kendra reacted after Donnie lost his arm. How did Yuichi react to the loss of Leo's arm? I can imagine Leo slurring out that everything is going to be okay to reassure him.
Tumblr media
Prior to Leo and Donnie losing their arms, Leo had already spend some time in Japan along with Mikey. He was mostly doing good recovering mentally and Usagi played a big part in this. There were some instances where Leo and Mikey were called back by Raph and Donnie to face a bigger foe together and Usagi always hated watching Leo leave. He would always return and he had taken a step back in his recovery but Usagi would always be there for him and help him through it. Usagi knew that something bad was going to happen when he watched Leo leave through a portal this time, his nose twitching more nervously than ever before. His fears were confirmed when, a week later, his phone rang with Leo's number popping up but it wasn't Leo's voice on the other end. Raph had called and explained everything as calmly as possible because Leo had insisted that somebody call Usagi while he was hyped up on painkillers. Mikey made the portal for Usagi and the dam broke for the rabbit yokai when he reunited with Leo.

forgot to share my future au designs for the 2012 boys here! i'll throw some headcanons under the cut 👇🏽
- a couple years after the end of the 2012 series, leo moves to japan with karai and shinigami to help them manage the new foot clan. it was a difficult decision but eventually the boys accept it. leo leaves on amicable terms with his brothers and they keep in touch
- raph is left in charge of the other two rascals. despite not being able to handle the pressure of being leader when he was younger, he fits the role much better now. donnie and mikey joke that hes as big a worrywart as leo was, if not bigger
- donnie almost entirely gives up on his martial arts training. raph tries to keep him into it but he becomes even more stubborn as he got older. raph reluctantly gives up on pushing it. he still keeps on top of tech and takes a more "guy in the chair" role for missions
- mikey gets into boxing! it happened on an especially boring day and raph entertained him by showing him the basics. mikey got super into it and now practices his boxing regularly. he uses raph's punching bag more than raph does now
- raph gets one whole inch on leo. they discover that he's slightly taller when leo comes back home to visit for the first time in years. raph is absolutely ecstatic. leo is horrified to learn he's the shortest now (i have to spread the short leo agenda, sorry)
- yes, mikey where's his mask longer now. yes, everyone was upset when he started doing that. he jokes that he's "growing his hair out"

Rural Au Masterpost
Hamamoto Yoshi finds 4 turtle yokai abandoned and decides to raise them in 1930s/40s rural Japan. I'm making it in the same vein as Grave of the Fireflies, This Corner of The World and The Wind Rises in that it mostly deals with the effect of the war on citizens and how it upended their lives in the smaller ways ( rationing, losing loved ones, etc ).

Nearing the end of our trip so here's a quick sketch of some of our fashion finds. As you can see, my style tends to lean more silly Engrish. While Don prefers limited time pieces that state where they've been. I've spent way too much money on this trip, but no regrets.

Travelling
Tumblr media
So. I've got this idea. Imagine this: after the rise movie, after Cass apocalypse series (it's already canon for me), all the turtles are finally ok. Both present and future-alive, their injuries and traumas healed.
Then Splinter has an idea: they saved the world. Literally. So let's go see the world. Afterall, boys haven't ever been out of NYC.
Baron Draxum makes them cloaking broaches, so they look human to everyone except each other and can travel by daylight. Future Donnie provides them with money (just don't ask how or where from). Future turtles decide to stay in New York and enjoy some peace after, you know, apocalypse. And keep an eye on the city while teenagers and Splinter are away.
First stop- Italy. Cause pizza😉 They've got to try the original pizza (Splinter wanted to start from Japan, but was outvoted).
So here they are in a city plaza (I used Turin for reference), each doing their own thing while Splinter tries to figure out where they are supposed to go next.
Leo's feeding pigeons, Mikey's painting, Donnie helps out Mikey and at the same time researches history of the city. Raph's relaxing✨. Splinter told everyone he has been here when traveling as an actor and DEFINITELY knows where the best pizza place is, but let him consult the map again. Why does this thing have to be so large and hard to read?
I'm planning to make a series of paintings, all about their family exploring the world and having fun😉
Why? Cause I want to😎 And after all they've been through, they totally deserve it

OK so I dont really like this but this 2012 tmnt mermaid au has been driving me INSANE so here are some mermaid designs for the boys (which I might change if I draw more stuff for this au) and some lore for the au under the cut!
also Donnie is ftm and Leo is mtf and those are the facts! (Donnie did do top surgery on himself, do NOT ask me how he did that underwater safely)
(just a quick note: I am using some japanese mythos for the mermaid part but I'm also being loosey goosey with it alskjdfh)
ALSO slight tw for cannibalism? or like cannibalism adjacent behavior
There is a yokai described in Japanese literature called the ningyo, a creature that is half human and half fish. Legend says that if you capture a ningyo and eat its flesh, that you will be granted eternal life. Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were familiar with these legends, though Saki always believed in them more than Yoshi. Saki believed in the legends so much that he became obsessed with finding the legendary ningyo and becoming immortal after consuming its flesh. Yoshi accompanied his brother on these ventures, more out of a sense of familiar duty and a need to watch out for his younger brother than an actual belief in the ningyo.
And of course, it just so happens that the brother who does not at all believe in the existence of yokai would be the one to find one. Yoshi encounters Tang Shen, a ningyo who has been living throughout the local freshwater river system. And suddenly Yoshi realizes that Saki's quest for murder might actually come true since apparently these ningyo are very much real. So now whenever he accompanies Saki on his hunting quests, he does everything in his ability to try to dissuade Saki from his plan, and when he realizes that isn't going to work, he starts to sabotage Saki's efforts. And Yoshi does this because well he kept in contact with Tang Shen, and the two became close friends, and son fell in love, bridging the gap between yokai and human.
They can't get married, obviously, Tang Shen is fully a yokai, but they build their lives together and eventually Tang Shen falls pregnant with their daughter Miwa. The two weren't entirely sure what to expect of their child, but Miwa turns out to be a completely normal human child.
Over the years as Yoshi and Tang Shen's love and family grew, Yoshi started pulling away from his birth family, and more noticeably, from Saki, who was you know pretty angry with Yoshi who seemingly disappeared on him with no explanation. Saki channels his anger into his search for the ningyo, and it takes three years but eventually he does finally find one.
Around three years after Miwa was born, Tang Shen and Yoshi welcome in four new kids! Quadruplets! Three boys and a girl. And these four, unlike Miwa, seem to all be fully ningyo, which very much surprised Yoshi and Tang Shen (both the fact that there were four kids and those four kids are all mermaids) but hey, they knew their genetic situation would be weird and they were fully ready to hop into raising these four.
It's only a few days after the birth of their quadruplets, so soon after that they haven't even given them names, that Saki stumbles upon the home of Yoshi and Tang Shen. And He Is Pissed. Not only did his BROTHER ABANDON him but he abandon him to start a family with this yokai? The yokai that he's been hunting all this time? And Saki, like in canon, kills Tang Shen and Miwa. (Or well you know, he kidnaps Miwa and renames her Karai but Yoshi thinks Miwa is dead)
Yoshi manages to get away with the quadruplets in the chaos, and he tries so hard to establish a new life for himself in Japan, but no matter where he goes, Saki manages to find him. Eventually Yoshi gets desperate enough to flee the country, and he finds himself in New York City!
But meanwhile back in Japan, Saki did in fact end up eating Tang Shen but idk how he realizes it but he figures out that he didnt get immortality, and so he concludes that oh, Tang Shen must have been tainted somehow by her relationship with Yoshi, which sucks because now he has to find a whole other ningyo to get immortality. Luckily he happens to know of four ningyo that he would be more than happy to kill, which is basically Saki's drive to finding and killing the Hamatos.
Anyways that's all I have so far!!!! I'm trying to think about how they would live in NYC, if they can somehow become human (in maybe like an H2O just add water situation) or if they are stuck in the water all the time.
I'm leaning towards them being able to shed their fish tails if even only for a small amount of time, just so they can still be ninjas and train on land, since I think Yoshi would still want to train them to defend themselves. I think that if they can be human for a bit, they still get dried out really easily so they can't stay out of the water for very long, probably not long enough for them to go to school full time, so they still live super isolated lives. Or maybe Yoshi figures out a way to train them to fight in the water? Idk suggestions are appreciated!
They do eventually meet April and Casey, I think April is gonna be on the swim team and so she's a fairly strong swimmer (for a human) and so she spends a lot of time in the water with the hamatos which they appreciate a lot! I think maybe Yoshi isn't a super strong swimmer so as much as he tries to spend time with his kids he can't really.
Casey is still on the hockey team and he can't swim, the hamatos try to teach him but they fully dont know how to swim with legs and so they are Bad tm swimming teachers salkdjfh.

I blame @melonpalooza for introducing me first to the Brothers Sun, and then the idea of a TMNT au based on the brothers sun. If you haven't watched it, it's on netflix and you GOTTA check it out it's fantastic and only one season.
In this AU, there's 4 brothers instead of 2 obv, with Raph and Leo staying behind in Japan while Shen left for America with Mikey and Donnie. Details and closeups under the cut :)
Tumblr media
Like Charles from the original show, Leo is the most lethal member of their gang. Him killing a man at 14 was what convinced Shen that he was too far gone and she had to leave with the remaining kids who could still be "saved"
Saki's son, not Yoshi's, though Yoshi raised him up until his untimely, totally-not-related-to-Saki death. Which is part of why Shen was able to abandon him (sorry Shen, you're not a great mom in this one...)
Sci-fi nerd who would love to write, though he suppresses all that. The only thing that matters is Protecting the Family.
Meditates a lot (He Is Dissociating)
Spitting image of Shen
Tumblr media
Where Leo is cold and dispassionate, Saki's dragon, Raph is his rabid dog. Lowkey feral, laughs during fights, always smiling. Bloodthirsty.
Genuinely a fun guy, kind of taking Blood Boots's role from the show
He was 11 when Shen left, so he was exposed to the violence younger and more intimately than Leo was.
Really looks up to Leo, not that he'd ever admit it.
Very little self-preservation instinct. Leo has had to frantically stop him from bleeding out WAY too many times.
Yoshi's son, but he was born at a weird point where he honestly could've been Yoshi's or Saki's, and Shen honestly was pretty sure he was Saki's (or told herself that to assuage any guilt about leaving him)
Saki totally saw a younger Yoshi in him, and was super normal about it. Saki definitely doesn't miss the brother he didn't kill and isn't mentoring Raph and extra close to him as a result. Who said that.
Gets shot when trying to save Shen after she's taken hostage. Mikey fails to take his pulse and incorrectly says he's dead, so they leave him behind. They think he's dead for at least a few days and Leo crashes out HARD
Tumblr media
22, already almost done with his doctorate. So incredibly done with this entire situation and wants to focus on his dissertation
Kind of remembers his older brothers, but not super well (he was 7 when they left)
Shen uses him as the main justification for leaving, because he's just SO smart and he would've been wasted in a life of crime. Raph is definitely a bit snarky about his genius and potential
Learned Japanese for school credits, but his accent is ATROCIOUS, which Raph and Leo roast him over
Leo is especially jealous of the life Donnie got to lead, and is cold to him as a result.
Spitting image of Yoshi, but with Shen's coloring
Tumblr media
Only 4 when they left, so he has basically no memory of the others or Japan
Donnie had too much Potential, and Mikey was just too Bright to stay in Japan. Too soft and gentle for that life.
Not one for school, but he's in an improv club like Bruce was. Makes friends with literally everyone.
Thinks the whole crime family thing is SO COOL (until it isn't). Super excited to meet Raph and Leo and learn about their history.
Only understands like, a few words of Japanese. Knows enough to order food and ask for the bathroom. His accent is way better than Donnie's though (probably bc he's a big anime fan)
Mondo is his best friend. Him and Mondo both get along well with Raph. Blame themselves for Raph's "death," considering it was Mikey's plan that got him killed.
Bleaches the tips of his hair.
