The Wheelers being the Wheelers and Mike being invisibly gay all fits so nicely together it’s so nice, it’s so so delicious thinking about how Mike feels. I just wish more people could see Mike’s experiences as they actually are because it’s actually- it’s making me insane, I’m laughing like a maniac and screaming, crying, throwing up.
Please people. Let go of depicting the Wheeler’s like the Byers, let go of depicting Mike’s experiences to be identical to Will’s, let go of all of that and take my hand so I can show you why the Wheelers and Mike’s experiences are actually worthy of us ripping out our hair over them😌

okay now more byler headcanons slightly older - the miwi ones
mike is a huuuuge physics nerd. he studies it on his own before taking it in hs, going to the library to get books on it and textbooks to figure out equations. when he learns a new concept he excitedly tells the party, who all share in his joy to varying degrees. in hs him and dustin compete to be the star student of the class both becoming quite the teacher’s pet. will loves hearing mike explain different phenomena with all the big terms. he doesn’t really struggle that much with it in class but he pretends to be stuck more often than not just to watch mike explain a concept with enthusiasm. will asks “can you explain this?” and mike’s eyes light up so excited to get into it. and will also loves that when he does finally “get it” mike praises the shit out of him.
every time will’s over and changes in front of him mike immediately averts his eyes, and he doesn’t understand at first what makes him so uncomfortable bc he doesn’t react that way w anyone else
when will’s starting to realize his feelings for mike are becoming very serious he tries to train his brain to think of something else whenever mike pops into his head. although most of his distraction topics tend to remind him of mike anyway.
they both could notice something shift between them when hs started but they pretended like everything was normal.
when mike visited in lenora will noticed how mike’s smile seemed forced and he thought it was bc maybe mike wasn’t that excited to see him - that maybe mike really was “out growing” him
when the party get drunk together for the first time mike and will gravitate towards each other like magnets. becoming very hushed and giggly together, and the whole party thinks “okay figures”
the small sober part of both their brains is quietly thinking “wait why can’t it be like this all the time?”
mike finds himself grabbing will’s arm with everything he says, subconsciously trying to pull him closer, thinking crazy stuff like “i wanna be all over him” not even knowing in what way or why really, “whoa being drunk is weird, it makes me even more obsessed with my best friend…”
meanwhile will is like why is mike so touchy now, i don’t hate it, i really like it but what’s going on? why is he looking at me like that? am i crazy or is something happening right now?
they probably end the night drunkenly telling each other how much they love each other, how they’re each others best friend, like Best Friend™ thinking that will help the gnawing feeling in their gut subside when they look at each other
they used to hug much more when they were younger, in greetings and goodbyes, but they noticed that most boys didn’t do that as they got older, even lucas and dustin didn’t, so then it became a secret thing, only when they were completely alone. but after a particularly brutal dressing down from lonnie and harsh words from bullies it seemed to stop completely. only when it was truly warranted, if they had some real justification for it. like getting hurt, skinning a knee, crying, then it was okay.
when they get drunk that first time they hug each other very intensely, mike says “i wish we could do this all the time” will says they can if they want, and then starts them trying to let themselves be more familiar w each other again
when they first get together mike is overwhelmed at random moments looking over at will that all of it is real, will loves him and he loves will too, attacking will with kisses all over his face bc “oh my god oh my god i like you so much what the fuck!” will has to beg him to stop but of course he loves it and feels similar feelings take over him too
sitting and admiring mike while he’s doing whatever, maybe he’s talking or just walking around, temporarily forgetting where he is and mike looks over at him smiling and will is just a puddle of emotion that he gets to be with mike.
also during their early relationship will has to constantly remind himself that he doesn’t have to hide what he feels for mike. he doesn’t have to look away or hold his tongue. mike calls him out on it thinking maybe something is upsetting him but will is just worried that he’ll be too much. he’ll say too much or seem too clingy and it will scare mike off with just how much will likes him. (part of him knows it’s silly when mike’s confessed so much to him at this point but it’s still scary!) once he’s reassured he can express whatever he wants will slowly discovers a whole side of himself that was lying dormant. feeling more open with his feelings than he ever has <3

Is FGO's Andromeda Black?
I already talked about this on Twitter So I figured I would mention this here and it was originally a sort of response to people criticizing for someone assuming Andromeda was some sort of gyaru.
I appreciate that people are aware of Andromeda’s Aethiopian / African origins in FGO but tbh I think there’s something to be said about how FGO design usually approaches drawing black people / features. Sure I think Andromeda is black but if you where to grab a random non-fate fan before putting FGO’s Andromeda, Amakusa, Emiya Alter, and Suzuka Gozen (Summer) in front of them with no context and asked them “Which of these characters is black?” or "Which of these character an African figure?" I hesitate to say that they would be able to tell you consistently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not saying no character can ever be racially ambiguous or everything can fit cleanly into little boxes at all times but as tempting as it is to say someone not realizing Andromeda is black is merely the ignorance of an audience member I can’t help but think that Fate also primes such expectations with how they often approach black characters in general. I think parts of the internet do bend over backward trying to deny a character being black when it makes sense but I also ask when is the last time Fate has idk drawn really curly hair or dreads? Like seriously think about it.
Tumblr media
(Lenora maybe isn't the best example because I think she plays into some stereotypes but the point here is to look at the hair texture)
So, I think as good as the conversation about Africa in Greek mythology is to have and how easy it is to blame it on the audience (which is not completely unjustified) I think we also have to question how Fate itself primes the audience or may handle things in such a way as to increase the chance of miscommunication. And this is not to say that it’s always Fate’s fault or that black people can never have straight hair and / or lightskin black people or what have you, but i find Myself having to debate whether a character is black or not in fate way more often than I have to debate if a character is black in other media. I think the weaknesses that Fate has with these kinds of designs is something I don’t see with Magic the Gathering or Pokemon or even Digimon. Outside of specific characters I don’t see people arguing Marvin Jackson from Digital-Police is a gyaru or Lenora isn’t black.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like if you look at Sid Story’s Mansa Musa design for example I don’t think there’s really anyway for someone to misinterpret that she’s not black without looking like they are purposefully trying to troll others for engagement.
Tumblr media
(Shout outs to illust_ringo (https://twitter.com/illust_ringo))
Like yeah, there is a lot of racism in some parts of the Fate fandom but Fate itself did also make a bunch of Detroit jokes with Emiya alter and clearly realized they made some sort of mistake with design since they’ve been walking back on some subtle stuff so I can only give FGO itself so much grace in that context. I love Fate but I think if we want to have a productive conversation we need to acknowledge the racism within Fate itself and how that can attract certain people or set up certain expectations (even with the censorship of characters like Emiya Alter).
I guess what I’m also trying to say is for some people if you give an inch they’ll take a mile. If you give even a little bit of a possibility that a character isn’t black, even if they’re supposed to be, some people are going to take it and I think that there’s some stuff Fate could be doing more often (even if not all the time) to help prevent misconceptions from occurring and prevent me from pulling out an essay or history lesson on why a character is or should be black almost every-time they release and African servant.
While I ended up talking about some of the ways I think Fate could do better I don’t think it’s always 100% their fault. Like I said if you give an inch some people will take a mile (and some people don’t want to ever count Egypt as part of Africa for some reason) but I also think there’s stuff they could be doing to help curb this. I also don’t think it helps that Fate barely touches any black figures around / outside of Egypt but that’s for another time (where’s Yasuke?! Im on my hands and knees begging).
Anyway, those are my thoughts because quite frankly one could go on all day with almost infinite ifs, ands, or buts and numerous exceptions and when the responsibility is more on the designer or more on the audience or how there are always exceptions, considering racially ambiguous people and designs, etc but this is from Twitter and my brain hurts so I'll spare you an entire chapter book's worth of thoughts. I figured this was also fitting to go over during Black History Month.
Extra Thoughts
There are a couple of other points I would like to mention though. Some people have argued Andromeda is a win because they didn't depict her as white and I'm not sure I completely agree? Yes, it is a major win that they didn't do that thing where they only look at how white Europeans from the medieval century depicted her and used pale skin as a symbol of beauty but there are some fan translations of her profile and it says this " A tomboy princess who prides herself on her swimming ability. Ethiopia (Aethiopia) is said to mean "land of the sunburnt people"[1], however, it does not necessarily correspond to the nation of Ethiopia which exists today."
So yes, Aethiopia does not correspond perfectly to Ethopia but it still refers to parts of Africa and Africans. Quite frankly, this part of the profile reads like a summer servant and while it might be easy to say "Fate gave her dark skin so it's a win" I also worry that what happened is that they interpreted "land of the sunburnt people" as a tan and took the depictions of white Andromeda and interpreted it as a sort of tan. Which is a doubt I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish I didn't have and I can't stress this enough. I so desperately want to believe that they are saying Andromeda is at least black but like I said I think we have to be honest that Fate's depiction of black and African people adds a lot of room for doubt. I think her skin is naturally tan at least and while she does indeed have dark hair in some of her ascensions it ends up turning blonde. You could maybe argue this confirms that she actually isn't a gyaru since most stereotypical gyarus have blonde hair but even with that in mind I think the way Fate handles Andromeda and just black designs in general can often fall a bit flat or unclear and sometimes I think fans are doing a lot of heavy lifting with good faith readings (including me).
This is not me saying Andromeda is white this is me saying that Fate pretty consistently falls short with these designs which feeds into a room for doubt. Like I said, I just want Fate to be more willing to include some black features more often so I'm not constantly having to pull up a small dissertation on why a character is black. It would be nice if there were just a few more of their black characters that I could point to and have no doubts about and not need to debate anyone.
Also, Fate just has a SERIOUS whitewashing problem and a weird relationship with blonde hair quite frankly. It feels like sometimes it's an obsession. Like when they made it so blonde hair was a sign of divinity for most of the Babylonian gods. Something that has a lot of Eurocentric baggage with the history of associating often white / "aryan" traits with purity, beauty, goodness, divinity, etc.. Not to mention, that in my opinion, Fate seems like it is basically going out of its way to avoid black historical figures most of the time unless they have do Egypt. Yes, I know about Strange / Fake and Nzambi but they barely touched most of Africa and even outside of Egypt they haven't really even mentioned characters like Yasuke outside of some fan-submitted design in one of their gag mangas. Combine this with designs like Emiya Alter and the controversy around that and I can't help but be left wanting a bit more of a bare minimum somewhere even if there aren't a lot of black servants.
Greeks and Pigment
Since someone is inevitably going to bring this up. Yes the Greeks do technically depict Andromeda with light skin even way back when but I just happened to take an art history class so I know a bit about this.
Greeks did this weird thing where they sometimes depicted women with light skin and men with dark skin so if you really wanted to commit to that argument then someone like Perseus for example would have to be black or at least dark-skinned. To me it can hold about as much wait as arguing a man has blue skin and a girl has pink skin because people associate those colors with boys and girls.
For reference, here’s a pot depicting Perseus and Andromeda from 575-550 BCE on an amphora from Italy. If someone did want to argue Andromeda was white than they would need to argue Pereus is black or something which is to say Greek art and skin tones can be weird.
Tumblr media
Andromeda wasn’t the only Greek mythological figure from Ethiopia (such as Memnon during the Trojan War) and the Greeks had settlements in African areas like Egypt and traded with Africans. Additionally, the myth of Helios explains why dark skin tones exist (so different skin tones are literally incorporated into their myths) so I think based on context even with art like this we can assume the Greek culture generally probably knew about black people. Also, Andromeda's profile clearly alludes to the idea that the designers and writers probably know Andromeda is from Africa too.
Ending
Idk, I try not to come off as a debbie downer or seem like the only enjoyment I get from Fate is when I bash it but I feel like some people are getting really caught up in praising the design or the individuals who are probably misreading Andromeda's race or ethnicity and not seeing the bigger picture itself. Something that limits the productivity of the conversation. I also think that where possible we should maybe push for more clearly black designs to prevent things like this from happening. I know that's usually not going to happen because FGO is a Japanese game for a mostly Japanese audience but you never know who's paying attention or who you might inspire. I also think that some of us maybe shouldn't be settling for scraps or half gestures as often.
Andromeda does do well with not just depicting her as Perseus white but at the same time I think everyone also just has REALLY low standards (including me) so even that little bit was a surprise. Which is depressing when you think about it. This isn't me saying you can't like Andromeda or that every character needs to have their race plastered on their forehead but it's very clear that Fate's design philosophy has some major pitfalls and weaknesses (especially with depicting black people) and I think it could be taking some simple steps to resolve them. It feels like every time FGO releases a black character the same cycle happens in the community and I'm not really sure it's going anywhere because people end up debating about what is basically a symptom showing up within the fanbase without addressing the actual source and elephant in the room itself, FGO and maybe even Fate in general.
There are also even people in Japan who at least kind of care enough to try to depict black people in a less ambiguous fashion that isn't racist or a stereotype (like Jinkei who has literally worked on FGO: https://x.com/jinkei_bunny/status/1759352092467364240?s=20).
BHM
Anyway, happy Black History Month. I urge you that while criticism is good and healthy positive reinforcement is also great and just as important. There's no point in ever only paying attention to the negative but never fostering the positive.
In the spirit of positivity and being the change you want to see in the world here are my Yasuke and Shaka Zulu fanservant designs

Just pointing out that Mike didn’t even technically join hellfire himself. Eddie straight up tells us that he saw Mike and Dustin (probably Lucas as well) sitting at an outsider table and knowing that They’ll be the future of hellfire. Eddie took them in so Mike didn’t even actively seek this. Wouldn’t be bad if he did though.
And something rather ironic is that the non-conformist club has a uniform lmao. The hellfire club members are still conforming, just not to societal standards. They’re confirming to Eddie’s standards. Mike is forcing himself to conform just as much in hellfire as he is anywhere else. Mike isn’t really finding himself again, he’s still very much trying to blend in with the crowd. Still trying to be normal and conform and overcompensating so much on that that he’s leaving his individuality behind. Mike is shapeshifting this season. He’s pretending. He is Not yet accepting himself at all. And I think his aversion to popularity is not so much about him not caring what others think of him, but actually exactly about what others already think of him and how he just tries to blend into the crowd that others have decided on being the place where he belongs (I have an unfinished post about this that’s been rotting in my drafts for months lmaoo).
One thing I see on bylertok way too much is people pointing out that even though Will told Mike it’s “not possible” that he’d ever join another party (replace Mike), Mike still went and joined Hellfire after he told Will to grow up and move on from D&D in S3 (which Will ended up doing)
It takes everything in me not to summarize the situation every single damn time I see someone mentioning it as if it’s proof that Mike ‘doesn’t deserve Will’ or something because it’s so frustrating that people just don’t understand anything about Mike and try and cling to any bit of ‘fault’ in his actions to justify why Byler wouldn’t work and why they don’t ship it
Because this whole ordeal had nothing to do with Mike and Will’s friendship, it was bought about in the first place by Mike and El’s ever incompatible relationship
Mike loves D&D, he loves writing, he loves being DM for the Party, he loves being with the Party. He never stopped loving these things, he stopped pursuing his interests because he was so over invested in being ‘normal’, which in his mind means ditching his friends for his girlfriend. El doesn’t like D&D, she doesn’t share Mike’s interests in his favourite things and because of that, Mike dropped all of it in favour of making out with El. Because that’s what you’re supposed to do in a relationship, and so that’s what he did
Of course, none of that is El’s fault either; El is learning the world and will eventually learn what she likes personally when she befriends Max whilst Mike is lost in juggling between what he should like vs. what he actually does like
All that is to say;
Mike dropped D&D because of El
(again, not El’s fault I’m not trying to blame her for anything it just is what it is)
So circling back to the “not possible” moment, I wanna point out that Mike’s insecurity in that moment specifically is Will leaving him emotionally because Will already is physically leaving and Mike blames himself. He’s mentioned himself obviously that he’s afraid of losing Will but he’s also made it clear many times. After their fight, Mike just wants to know that Will would still choose him and Will assures him that he wouldn’t be replacing Mike. Will placed no expectations on Mike when he said this, he just wanted to reassure Mike that they’re okay and that they’ll be okay which is exactly what Mike wanted
After Will and El left, Mike joined Hellfire because he could focus on doing the things he liked again without having to devote himself to being El’s boyfriend. I was happy for Mike to have D&D back when I first watched S4 and I know Will would be happy that Mike is finding himself again. And while we’re on the topic of Mike finding himself, since he’s joined Hellfire he’s started slowly accepting himself and accepting that he doesn’t care anymore if he fits into the standard or not. He doesn’t care about popularity or people liking him. He is growing and he’s been getting his character development
Anyway that’s all I just love analysing Mike it’s so interesting, but in this case I don’t think it even needs to be analysed. Mike isn’t himself around El and that’s got nothing to do with Will— that’s just Milevens relationship dynamic
#even when mike refused to pursue his interest in dnd he never acts like he genuinely doesn’t like it#and he’s never shown to be insecure about being a nerd Unless it comes to El#that’s when he’s insecure about that stuff#generally he just isn’t#and he also never pretended like he genuinely lost interest in dnd#instead he says that he’s not in the mood to play rn#or literally that he will be there to play with will#but he very openly states that he feels like this is something he Had to let go of since he’s growing up#like#y’all know what i mean??!#the theory that mike is super insecure about being a nerd#is solely based on the line ‘one day she’ll find out i’m just some random nerd’#while the rest of the show very much shows us that Mike is Only insecure about his nerdy interests infront of el#Not generally#i think getting back into playing dnd after s3 is something mike did#because he realized that being gay wasn’t just a phase tied to childhood that he would overcome once he grows up#which is why he leaves his childhood behind as he thinks his gayness is tied to it#but again#he’s proved wrong at the end of s3#so if he just IS gay#meaning his gayness never had anything to do with his childhood#meaning leaving his childhood doesn’t change anything#doesn’t make him like girls#what is the point in not pursuing dnd then?#so that’s why i think mike still plays dnd again#even though he doesn’t accept himself for being gay yet#even though he doesn’t accept himself for Who He Is yet#time for lenora’s opinion

Ingo and Emmet are technically celebrities back in Unova, or at least Nimbasa, it would make sense if a paparazzi or journalist or someone from the news came from Nimbasa to see and report back to the city what the twins are doing. They're nosy and you know what sells? Whether or not the celebrity is dating, it could be the husband protecting the farmer from bad publicity or them being super proud of their spouse! It's not a date per say but it'd be an interesting event give or take.
Kade and I were talking about this, but anything to do with paparazzi and publicity will probably have more to do with Elesa. We don't want to stray too far from canon, so most celebrity antics will be more to do with being associated with her.
They're technically celebrities... but not quite! They don't exactly have much star-power of their own in canon. When you disembark on the Battle Subway and talk to the other random NPCs, pretty much everyone hates them; they all say stuff about how Ingo and Emmet are suspicious or weird (I remember that vividly because it honestly made me feel a little sick and I had to put down the game for a couple of days ;;;>.>). Few can appreciate their autism. 😔
The competitive battling scene isn't particularly big in Unova (outside of Blueberry Academy but... that's pretty contained). Dedicated battlebrains like Hilda and Hilbert don't make up a significant amount of their passengers. Most passengers are just average people on their commute to work. Most people challenge the Battle Subway for the sake of it (a bit of a tourist attraction like the carnival area nearby), lose really badly, get discouraged, and never come back unless if they need to use the subway to get somewhere.
In the railfan scene, they usually aren't even special guests at train conventions! They're regular attendees who had time to befriend Cilan at their leisure. He's probably the only person who does their stamp rally!
Being a Battle Facility Head doesn't necessarily constitute celebrity status. Lenora has a perfectly normal husband and marriage with no drama whatsoever! All the Unovan Gym Leaders have other jobs and lives of their own; similarily, submas are just conductors first and foremost. It wouldn't be so absurd for a middle aged train conductor to settle down with some farmer.
They're just some guys. They're even worse in Stardew as regular old train conductors; there's no battling scene to draw in challengers and the scenery itself doesn't even have much worth visiting! It's a sad truth, but most people wouldn't notice if they went missing *cough* they will. The "main plot" for them is how their relocation cough bringing that to the spotlight had a bit of a toll on them mentally.
On a sillier note, I do like the thought that most people were interested in them (superficially). Ingo did end up winning first place in a Unova sexyman poll for being tall, dark, and handsome. Emmet's still bitter about being voted third place despite being his identical twin. The Battle Subway got busy when people were under the impression that Ingo was a edgy, brooding, gentleman but that perception was quickly turned around the second he opened his mouth. The hype died down for them after a year so now they're back to being just some guys.
Anyways... Probably the closest thing we have to a "paparazzi" event on our itinerary so far is just Cilan being submas' number one fan (one and only fan?) as usual.

☀️random dumb things the writer recently thought about and/or realised (but it’s all related to the bw anime)
(Read more because this is so long)
— I always hated Burgundy for some reason when I was younger- and my blurry ass memory made me think it was probably about her hating Cilan so much but when I actually went back to the episode she was introduced in, I remembered exactly why I hated her.
She was kinda mean to Ash’s Oshawott. That was the literal reason I hated her so much for so many years. I apologise Burgundy, my dumb child brain just really liked that Oshawott.
— Georgia’s occupation really confused me and honestly still does. You’re telling me that you’ve made it your LIFE GOAL to chase down and defeat just Dragon-type trainers so much so that you literally call yourself ‘the Dragon Buster’? What the fuck happened to you. Did Dragon-types kill your grandma
The only positive I can genuinely give her is that she was understanding to Bianca confusing her with a Zorua multiple times, which seems like a low bar but anything can be somewhat redeeming for them. Plus she’s still around the same age as Ash and Iris, so it’s not like it’s really that bad. There’s definitely been worse.
— Bianca… confused me. Even now I’m still a little confused but I will never understand why they kept Bianca a rival character but still made Cheren into his b2w2 counterpart. I guess Trip was just sort of a stand-in for rival Cheren? But that still doesn’t really explain the exact timeline for the actual show. It’s mid-b2w2 based on the actual events after Cheren was introduced (and never seen again) as N is introduced the episode after— but it’s also not because the gym leaders that stepped down by b2w2 are still running their gyms, if not obvious by Lenora and Brycen— then by Cilan, Cress and Chili. They don’t even step down at the end of the bw anime— it’s just that Cilan goes on his own journey and bumps into Ash a few times afterwards. What time are we in??
— Burgh’s gym is ENTIRELY different in the anime. Not even just to the point where it’s simply that there’s no challenge— the LAYOUT ITSELF is different. No honey walls. No web stuff.. it’s just a big terrarium. Like, his gym wasn’t the only one that changed when brought into the anime but I don’t think any changed nearly as drastically.
— Lenora. Beautiful, stunning, no notes.
— I, for a long while, thought Elesa and Cynthia were the same character. Younger me saw two tall blonde women and thought ‘yeah. they’re the same.’ To the point that I thought moments from when Cynthia showed up in the bw anime were part of Elesa’s episode.
— Skyla, first cannons in the gameplay of your gym and then making decisions on whether a challenger would beat you based on their Pokémon’s weaknesses isn’t that bad.. but outright denial of their badge based on that? what did they do to you girl,,,
— I comically do not remember any of the scenes with Clay, Brycen or Marlon. I don’t know why— maybe those episodes are on the disc I currently can’t find?? I also don’t remember any of Drayton’s battle but I do remember him in Iris’s flashbacks.
— Ingo and Emmet canonically naruto running.
— Stephan getting his name constantly mispronounced is so sad, I actually really liked him. Give my boy justice.
— Cress’s stupid posh accent in contrast to Chili and Cilan’s is so dumb. Idiot thinks he sounds cool, clearly. /lhj
— SEVERE LACK OF E4 MEMBERS!!! An exchange between Ash and Grimsley would’ve been so stupid but the entire bw series was ALREADY STUPID!
I have no other thoughts that require shouting into the abyss so just have this from when I was trying to check something on Bianca’s bulbapedia page

The Letters pt. 5
tw drug use
Will flipped the page to the next letter and was a little taken aback by how messy the handwriting was. Mike already didn’t have the best handwriting; It was loose and sharp all at the same time and the letters were kept tightly together, huddled for safety and warmth. Now, Will looked down at the words and frowned. The letters were connected, but not like in cursive. It was more so like Mike just didn’t pick up the pen when he moved on to the next letter. It was careless. He also noticed how much more often words were scratched out. It made him nervous about what Mike had to tell him.
Dear Will,
I have something to tell you. It’s a secret though. I’m seriously praying the government, or, even worse, my parents, doesn’t open this letter.
I’m, like, really high right now.
I made friends with a dealer a while back. Really he’s more of Dustin’s friend and he runs a DnD group. Dustin and Lucas were here with a few of his friends, but they went home. His name isn’t super important right now. Whatever.
I’m here with him, so you don’t have to worry at all. It’s all good.
There was a little burn mark at the edge of the page between these two lines.
Should I be writing to you right now? Would it even be a good idea to send this? This is a bad idea, but I’m committed now. Fuck it.
The night started out good. He set up a one-shot for us. Don’t hate me for playing DnD without you. Honestly, that was the closest thing to being with you without actually flying to you. I kept looking at where you would sit in my basement (next to me) and getting pissed when it was some random guy. Why couldn’t it have been you? You should have known we were playing and then teleported. Will the Wise would have been able to.
Anyways, this DM is fucking brutal. He shows absolutely no mercy. I think he gets a kick out of watching us fail saving throws. I got a nat 1 at some point! Will, I feel like I brought shame to our party. We really needed you back here. You should sneak out, hop on a plane, and meet us here.
Do you even want to? You have a good life in Lenora. All that’s left is to find a new party, right? How hard could that be? Just hang out in a comic book shop enough and one will walk in looking for a cute wizard or cleric and there you will be, looking at the newest issue of Daredevil.
Promise you’ll come back for at least one game? God, I sound desperate. Ignore me.
Okay, so something not about DnD.
After the game, we were offered some weed. It wasn’t like he pressured us or anything. It was really casual. He pulled out his metal lunchbox and asked if we wanted to smoke. Lucas can’t because of basketball and Dustin was too freaked out to try. Most of his friends had to head out so they declined too. Now, I’m here with his bandmates, and the air smells really fucking bad, and I’m kind of freaking out, but that’s normal. He said weed either makes people loosen up or freak.
I hate how it feels. Kinda. It’s like all my limbs are corkscrewing at different speeds, in different directions, and through different dimensions. He tells me I have to relax and lean into it. ‘It’s like floating in a pool. You have to relax or you’ll drown.’ It’s really hard to let go. I keep trying by just thinking of stuff, but my train of thought keeps veering off the tracks. I feel like if I don’t correct its course, it’s gonna just crash and burn. I don’t think this is for me.
I can’t really go home right now either. I’m pretty sure I reek. Although maybe my parents wouldn’t notice. I can imagine exactly how me walking in would go down if they couldn’t smell it on me.
“Hey, mom, dad,” I say as I walk in.
“Hi, sweetie. How did hanging out with your friends go?” My mom is on the couch with Holly while my dad is on the recliner. He doesn’t even bother to look up, just hums.
“It was fine. I’m tired though.” I’m already on my way to the stairs so she can’t trap me in a conversation.
“Okay. Goodnight, honey.” She looks over to my dad like she’s trying to make him lift his head up with his mind.
“Goodnight.”
And then the smell of marijuana reaches them and I’m sent to live on a farm with my uncle Eric in Montana. I think they would just ship me over in a cardboard box.
Whoa. It just started pouring out of nowhere. Maybe if I stood outside in the rain, the smell would wear off faster. He said it wouldn’t and laughed. I think I want to die.
Will, Will, Will, Will, I don’t know what else to say. I’m spacing. I’ll just call my parents and stay here I think. It’ll be embarrassing in the morning, but that’s a problem for the future. I don’t think I can write another sentence. I just did. And another. Okay, I’m done. Don’t tell anyone about this. I hope this letter doesn’t also smell.
Will leaned down a moment and sniffed the letter. He winced and confirmed that it did smell vaguely like weed.
Love, Mike
P.S. I think the munchies might be fake. I’m nauseated right now.
P.P.S. Don’t be worried. I swear I’m fine. I just really need to sleep this off.

Mike Character Analysis - Season 4
Season 1. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Season 2. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
Season 3. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
Part 1 (of 4):
I already wrote a few posts on a couple moments in season 4 so I won't repeat myself. There are plenty of other things to get into. A lot of this is going to include El and Will too because they are so closely tied together this season and it reveals a lot about Mike specifically. You can find them here:
Makeover's and Identity (El, Mike, and Will)
The painting reveal and why Byler makes sense pre-time jump
Conversations in Lenora
Mike and Will don't only talk about El
The first scene we see of Mike in season 4 says a lot. Let's start with his room, because this tells me about Mike and how he views himself (like everyone else's bedrooms/homes do). First of all, there is nothing of El's anywhere around the room. This is telling because when we see El's room she has Mike everywhere. There are pictures of him and a Valentines Day card from him. We know she's saving his letters and she spent time doing crafts and making a box? diorama? with Mike's picture and things he sent her. Most of this is typical teenage girlfriend stuff (though I will say the diorama is a bit much. Especially when you compare that with the fact that she's upset with him and knows something is wrong). She has other things in her room too that have nothing to do with Mike - which is good and healthy. Back to Mike's room. He doesn't have anything of El's but he does have a drawing of Will's on his bulletin board. Not surprising considering we have seen Will's drawings all over his house (and El's room, Jonathans room, the Byers fridge, and the party members have some too - Will draws/paints for the people he loves). It means something to Mike that Will gives him these drawings. We saw in season 1 that he saves them in a binder. They are special to him. We haven't seen Mike's room in a while (I think season 1 was the last time) and the last time we did he had bunk beds. Which was always stood out to me because no one shares his room. But now he has a double bed. He's getting older now. The party is in high school and 15 years old.
There are other indications that he's gotten older too. Because now he has a couple posters on his wall that are of shirtless, muscular men (I'm not sure what these are from-video games? movies?). Since he didn't just accidentally put random shit on his wall (because who does that?) we know this means something. Because people (especially teens) decorate their bedrooms with things they like. Things that represent them. Things that reflect their personalities. The thing that sticks out the most here is the One Way sign. I have so many questions about this sign. Mainly where he got it - did he commit a crime? Was a store randomly selling it? Did he find it on the ground outside and take it home? It's not a thing you see on the wall of someone's room. It's noticeable. They want you to see this sign. Because this sign is pointing toward his closet. And this didn't happen accidentally. Things don't magically appear on your wall without you thinking about it.
The scene where we are shown this sign has the closet door open. All of these things indicate to me that Mike has accepted his sexuality and is somewhat comfortable with it. At least within the confines of his own bedroom. Anyone can walk into his room and see this (and we see Nancy hovering in the doorway) so he's comfortable enough that he's not hiding it. Will's room on the other hand tells us something else. He has movie posters and artwork around and all of these things tell us something about his interests but he doesn't have posters like Mike. He's more contained. The audience knows that Will knows he's gay. He has internally accepted this part of his identity but he's still not comfortable with it. The only thing he has on his wall that maybe indicates he is gay is the Little Shop of Horrors poster but that isn't as directly a reference to his sexuality as Mike and his shirtless, muscular men.
There is another indication of Mike getting older and it's the fact that he's in his underwear in this scene. It's a little jarring at first just because we've seen these kids grow up. But I think what they are telling us here is that not only are they getting older but that all the themes of growing up are present here and they aren't shying away from it. It's a coming of age story. This scene isn't exploitative and it's not pointless. There is a reason they are showing him like this. And this combined with the posters and the sign are saying that Mike is getting more comfortable with his sexuality.
This combined with the fact that El has a Valentine's Day card from Mike that says "I like you" tells me that Mike is very conscious of the fact that he isn't in love with El. He wasn't writing that for a reason. Because how did he manage to find a store bought card that didn't have the word love on it. He had to have looked in multiple stores. He is trying very hard to make sure she doesn't think he loves her. Mike is staring very intently at the letter El wrote to him. He clearly read it several times. He looks like he's concentrating hard on something. El let slip a line about Will - that he's acting weird and painting something and won't let her see. She thinks it means he likes someone. Maybe a girl. It has to be this line that Mike is so focused on not only because there is nothing else of significance in this letter but because it's the only thing that explains Mike's behavior when he first gets to Lenora. Mike is jealous. He likes when Will's artwork is for him. And if Will has a girlfriend or likes someone than Will won't reciprocate his feelings. And Will only makes artwork for the people who are important to him. So it says something big if he made something for someone.
There has been about 5 months since the end of season 3 (that was October and now it's the end of March). I think with the way things ended in last season Mike spent this time thinking about his feelings. A much easier thing to do with El and Will both gone. I think it gave him a chance to clear his head and think about what they both mean to him and get more comfortable with himself. We see a different Mike in this first episode. He's confident in his nerdiness (at least until he gets around El). He's dressing differently and his hair is longer. He's playing D&D again and he's happy about it. He doesn't care if other people at school think he's lame for playing. He very excitedly goes around trying to recruit people to their game. He's explaining how cool he thinks dice with 20 sides are. He's not ashamed that he's a nerd and he no longer thinks playing games makes him childish. Part of this is because of Eddie. Seeing someone older play board games had to have helped Mike realize there is nothing childish about this. Part of this is because of Will and the fight they had in season 3 that first prompted him to get to this point. Because not only is Mike acting like himself again (at least somewhat - he's also acting like Eddie) but he's hanging out with Dustin. Will accused him of not caring about Dustin anymore during their fight. So he clearly spent time thinking about this. Something else that is different is that Lucas and Mike are no longer on the same page like they were in season 3. Lucas still doesn't want to play D&D. Which is fine, he could have grown out if it. It's ok if he has other interests that his friends don't share. But he clearly says he's doing this because he wants to fit in. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but it does indicate that Lucas is still on the same path he was last season and Mike isn't. Mike got tired of pretending to like or not like certain things. D&D is often used as metaphor for Mike and Will's relationship and here it's a little more direct. Mike isn't pretending to not like D&D (Will). He's accepting that he's a nerd (gay).
And then there is the fact that Mike is checking out the basketball team, and interrupting the wrestlers practicing (he is making different recruitment choices than Dustin), and clearly idolizes Eddie. Now it's possible he doesn't have a crush on Eddie. We don't see enough of those two together. But we do see that a lot of the changes in Mike -his clothes, hellfire, his hair, possibly the guitar that is in his room - are all influenced by Eddie. So he has a significant impact in Mike's perception of himself at this point. Now I don't believe anyone else knows Mike is gay. I doubt he's told anyone. But he's happier than we have seen him in a while when he's playing D&D.
The conversation Mike and Dustin have at the pep rally is about their girlfriends. It's clear Dustin brought this conversation up himself because he's telling Mike about his morning. And Mike responds with the thing he says a million times - El's a superhero! We could turn this into a drinking game at this point. I get the impression that Mike probably hasn't been talking about El too much, or at least not bringing her up himself. If he's more comfortable with his identity, it's probably a conversation he wants to avoid. And there is no indication from his friends that he talked about her.
Edit: I want to add something about Mike's room - it's messy. And this is out of the ordinary. We know this because we saw his room neater before and because Will looked worried when Nancy mentioned it. And like every other instance of Mike's behavior getting dismissed as him just being a teen, this is actually a mental health issue. While he is dealing with his feelings about his sexuality he is struggling with the supernatural stuff still - bad grades, sleeping in the basement, messy room (not all teens have a messy room and some adults do. It's not an age thing, it's personality. Or in this case trauma, because he can't find a reason to bother to clean it). It's no wonder he is still struggling with this because his emotional support - Will -isn't there and they aren't communicating. They've talked about this stuff before and aren't now. While Mike is a little more confident and comfortable with himself than in S3, he's still dealing with a lot of the things that have happened. It's not magically cured and we see that when he responds to El after the skating rink. It's a trauma response.

The thing was, Will Byers loved hot chocolate. He loved the sickly richness as a slight burning coated his tongue. He loved the warmth reaching his stomach. He loved the mug defrosting his fingers, colouring his skin from blue to red. He loved the oversweet sugar of the whipped cream and marshmallows; though, most of the time, it wasn't needed.
He'd loved it since forever, but it became a staple for the colder months when he was six years old. Jonathan was ten - Will remembered the birthday card he'd made at school, blue-tacked above the desk as a crayon drawing peaked between the opening.
They were holding ground at the usual safe haven: Jonathan's bedroom. The cracked open door widened and quickly clicked shut as the yelling outside went muffled and almost indecipherable ("You're acting crazy!" "I'm acting– You're making me crazy, with your fake promises! I can't trust a word out of your mouth!" "Oh, here we go, blame me, Joyce. You know, maybe you should learn to take some fucking accountability for once in your life–").
Heavy on the almost.
Within one of Will's fast-pulsing heartbeats, Jonathan placed down two mugs on his desk and fiddled with cassette tapes before shoving one at random into a secondhand boombox. The volume twisted higher as the yelling got closer, and a door Will knew to be his parents swung open; soon enough, his ears drowned in a vibrating bass and strumming electric guitar.
Before Will could think to ask what they were arguing about this time - causing another one of those guilt-ridden, reluctant looks from his brother - a warm mug was forced into his small hands, an overflowing mountain of whipped cream with marshmallows peaking out from beneath. Will’s eyes lit up, then batted to meet Jonathan's: red and glossed in the early morning, window light. A smile pulled Will’s mouth, only just reaching his eyes as he hoped to watch the watery look dry out of Jonathan’s ghostly disposition.
Minutes turned into forever, and the two sat on Jonathan’s bed as the music blared over the screaming and crashing. The tension didn't leave the air, and the glaze refused to leave Jonathan’s stiff eyes - but the sweet, warming hot chocolate was a woolly blanket in a blizzard.
Will was pretty sure it was the best thing he'd ever drank.
He could remember the weeks that followed his return from The Upside Down and how Joyce had woken him up with a steaming mug every morning, alongside offering more and more throughout the day. It was only store brand cocoa powder in boiled milk, but Will decided that tasted the best anyway.
Still, on the worst days when Will refused to move from his bed and only Joyce and Jonathan were allowed to enter his room: Jonathan would be sent to the store to buy the special stuff. The more expensive, branded hot chocolate, giant marshmallows, and sickly whipped cream.
And in each sip, he couldn't resist the hug he was instantly wrapped in.
On the first night in Lenora, the family had a mug after dinner as they all pretended they didn't miss Hawkins as much as they did. But the time Will thought of more often was a month later; leaving the bathroom in the middle of the night, he passed the living room to find the TV glowing across the carpeted floor as a hunched over silhouette sat in front of an old movie. When he approached the figure, El revealed tears in her eyes, and Will was quick to figure it wasn't because of the movie playing in front of her.
So, the tradition continued.
It was great that El grew just as big a fan. Some of his favorite mugs had been shared between them in secret at the end of his bed in the middle of the night, while the rest of the world became static. It was easy to forget time with her. As, all of a sudden, superpowers, demogorgons, and alternate universes didn't exist: and the irony that they would've never met without any of them never reached the two, because in that moment they'd known each other their entire lives.
After defeating Vecna once and for all, the Hopper-Byers returned to the Wheeler's house, where they were all staying for the time being. Will and Mike readied to pass-out in bed, but the tiredness left them, and all they could do was lay atop the comforter motionless as they silently stared at the ceiling. At some point, Mike had left the room, but Will didn't notice until he returned with two mugs and a stiff smile. As the darkness faded into the morning, they sat on Mike's bed and whispered the night away. For the most part, the mugs were untouched, as they quickly went cold and were discarded on the nightstand.
Because the truth was, Will didn't actually want a hot chocolate. In fact, he didn't a lot of the times he'd shared one with someone. He did, however, want the soft, comforting blanket that Jonathan had turned it into a decade ago.
It wasn’t about the hot chocolate. It was never about the hot chocolate - it was the people he shared it with as he gave up a piece of himself with every cup he made for someone and a weight lifted off his shoulders in each sip.

Random question, but what do you think of Finn Wolfhard's acting? I notice a lot of folks claim he's not a good actor, but I don't know if I agree with that.
ooh, i dunno. i think he’s good enough of an actor that when he’s in a role, i don’t see finn. it’s not on the same level as noah who is completely unrecognisable when he plays will but it’s still good enough for me. i think he’s the kind of actor who flourishes with a good script and a good director. it could be the child star curse but i don’t think that’s the case for finn. i’ve not seen all of his stuff but i thought he was a bit off in IT chapter two compared to first movie and i’d say it’s because the script was bad. even james mcavoy made me cringe and he’s like a superb actor. even bill hader tried his best; only his emotional scenes after eddie’s death stood out for me, tbh.
the goldfinch was kinda disappointing in many aspects so i don’t rly blame finn when i wasn’t too invested in his character as young boris. but his adult counterpart nailed it imo, and that’s probably because aneurin barnard (my fellow welshy 🙏🏻) is professionally trained, has more experience and is more confident in himself. i don’t remember ghostbusters well enough but finn seemed fine enough. it’s just a blockbuster movie to me, lmao.
i think people say he’s gotten bad in stranger things since s3 but i think he was supposed to be like that. if mike is supposed to be a repressed character then finn is doing it well enough. not to mention his monologue to el. it’s supposed to fall flat and seem insincere. but mike was more like himself before he flew over to lenora so finn clearly did his job. i’m good with reading faces (i rely on it) and mike says a lot with his face during will’s confession. now, people can say ST isn’t a good show or well written but finn has a good relationship with the duffers, so that’s a factor re. finn’s ability to perform. some actors are unable to perform consistently but i wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing. some actors tend to flourish if they’re passionate about a project, and are in the right setting for it. besides, finn seems to be more of a behind the scenes guy so that could be another factor.
sorry for the long winded answer… if it’s an answer enough for you 😭 tldr; he performs well enough but he shines when he works with a good script and/or cast and crew.

Thanks for wishing me good luck before! Finally, my streak of bad luck has (temporarily) ended and I got Akari in the first multi! Now I can save up gems for the rest of the month.
Anyway, I'm here asking about Registeel to anticipate upcoming gauntlet. Does it have a constant defense buffing passive skills or something, like Stoic 9 and the like? Does it proc when it attacks, gets attacked, or both? I guess this is where Lenora becomes a very valuable unit since she can debuff both defenses. Do we have other support/tech units other than her that can debuff both defenses at the same time? All I can think of are the ones that handle only one of them like Lucian or Colress. There's SS Leaf and SSR Cynthia, but the latter is premium.
Registeel having Acuity sucks, which means SC Zinnia's shenanigans will be hindered (not having her own flinches and free move next and no Better Prepared 3 as those rely on no buff) but I think she still can nuke.
I saw from one of your posts that Latios and Tornadus might be buffed in the upcoming gauntlet, is there any information about that?
Hell yeah, great job Akari! Hisui never fails.
So, the short is no. Nothing has been shared as far as I’m aware. Last I checked the gauntlet solo spreadsheet hadn’t updated with details, and nothing is available in Absol’s log. At a guess, any information that has leaked to us came from discord servers, because we live in Hell Timeline. There are also rumblings that yeah, new passives were added but weren’t able to be datamined, so we have absolutely no idea what they are yet. Unless that’s been cracked too, but I wouldn’t know without being in a discord server with a crowd, and never again. So no. I unfortunately know nothing more than that one post on Reddit thus far.
As for who debuffs both defenses, there are very few. Lenora’s effectively the only non-premium. SS Leaf can do it, but she never reruns so hope you picked her with Victory Road. Classic Elesa hits defenses and also everything else, so hopefully people picked her up last month, hahahaha no they did not around everything else. SC Diantha and NC Hop can do it too, which makes me think fighting weak. Inversion of buffs works, so Halloween Roxanne and Summer Hilda work. Snatch and Haze bots work too, though MPR is a big consideration. Debuffs that hit at random can potentially work depending on how fast it buffs, too. There’s also stuff like 5/5 SS Hilda that get status specific Sundering. There are options but they’re very specific, so this does feel like a good one for Piercing Blows.

Warnings: Kidnapping, possessive behaviours, obsessive behaviours, delusional Will byers, toxic relationships, stalking
(Y/N).
The Golden boy of Lenora Hills.
The boy everyone liked, not one person hated him.
Will loved him too.
He learned to move on from Mike and began obsessing over (Y/N).
He would sketch little pictures of (Y/N) in the classes they had together.
He'd watch (Y/N) laugh with his close friends during lunch.
He saw (Y/N) defend Eleven from her bullies.
He watched (Y/N) constantly.
(Y/N) was nice to him and Eleven and invited them to have lunch with him.
They became closer friends which Will adored.
Will began leaving letters and some of his drawings in (Y/N)'s locker.
Will would watch as (Y/N)'s eyes widened with shock as he read the letters.
Good shock with the first few letters but then dread every time he opened one.
Will was confused at why (Y/N) looked almost scared of the letters.
Eventually, on the last day of school before spring break, Will decided to confess to (Y/N).
"Hey (Y/N)? I need to talk you. In private." Will requested.
"Um, sure? Is something wrong?" (Y/N) questioned, slightly concerned.
"Everything's great! Just follow me." Will replied.
(Y/N) nodded then followed Will to an empty room.
"So what did you need to tell me?" (Y/N) asked.
Will took a deep breath before speaking.
"I'm in love with you!" He confessed.
(Y/N) rubbed his left elbow with his right hand and slightly frowned.
"Will. I'm sorry. I'm not queer. I don't like boys. But can we still be friends?" (Y/N) rejected him.
"You're lying! I know you are! And you liked my letters! I saw it in your eyes! Every letter and drawing I sent you!" Will exclaimed.
"You... sent those?" (Y/N) slowly spoke, terror clearly expressed on his face.
Will rapidly nodded with excitement, completely ignoring (Y/N)'s terrified expression.
The letters had started off sweet and endearing with little corny poetry tidbits and compliments.
" You look so handsome today! "
" Your new haircut looks amazing on you! "
" Roses are red, violets are blue, if I told you I liked you, would you say the same to me too? "
" Your laughter sounds like music to me, it's sweet and I love listening to it! "
Then slowly became creepy and possessive.
" Your new shampoo makes your hair smell great! "
" Would you mind if I keep your colonge? It smells and reminds me of you. "
" I don't like seeing you talk to other people. "
" Don't talk with Betty anymore or I'll seriously hurt her "
" I saw the Beatles poster in your room. I guess you're a fan, right? I can buy you any cassette you want. "
" Your diary is adorable. Especially since you talk about liking guys and girls. Maybe I have a shot with you after all! "
"You're my stalker. You're that fucking creep who's been going through my stuff." (Y/N) started speaking again.
"No! I'm not a stalker or a creep! I swear!" Will denied what (Y/N) was saying and walked closer to him.
"Don't come any closer you freak!" (Y/N) yelled.
Hearing (Y/N) call him 'freak' made something snap inside of Will.
Will grabbed a random textbook off a desk and slammed it into (Y/N)'s head, knocking (Y/N) unconscious.
Will's anger died down and he saw what he did.
He quickly checked (Y/N)'s pulse and breathed a sigh of relief when he registered it.
No one was at school except for the janitors.
And a brilliant idea struck Will's mind.
"He can be with me forever!" Will squealed before heaving (Y/N) onto his back.
He carried the other boy to his home then quickly went into the basement.
There was a little room he used for painting pictures of (Y/N) that none of his family found yet, so he gently placed (Y/N) in the room before rushing to grab some blankets and a stuffed bear as well as some rope.
He tightly tied (Y/N)'s left ankle to a hook in the wall and his right wrist to the hook as well.
Will softly stroke (Y/N)'s cheek then played with his hair.
"Just like a regular couple..." Will muttered to himself.
He carefully gagged (Y/N) so no one would hear him screaming and take him away.
Then Will left and locked the room to appear as normal to the rest of his family.
When (Y/N) finally woke up, he was confused and looked around, only to see paintings of himself covering the room's walls.
He tried to stand up but the ropes on his limbs are too tight for him to move.
(Y/N) tried to scream but it was muffled by his gag.
He frustratedly tried to loosen his gag and the ropes on his limbs but to no avail.
His frustration and anger caused tears to form in his eyes.
He heard footsteps and began screaming, not caring that it was muffled, he thought someone would help him.
But instead of help, Will walked through the door.
"Hello (Y/N). I brought you dinner. Tomorrow is gonna be an exciting day! My friend Mike is coming to visit! And if you play along, I'll let you come and have fun with us, okay?" Will offered as he placed down the plate and removed the gag.
(Y/N) didn't scream at Will or get angry, he just cried.
"Oh! The ropes must be too tight! I'll take them off. But you have to behave, okay? And now there's no need to cry, alright?" Will said as he removed the ropes.
(Y/N) just continued to silently sob.
Will wiped the boy's tears, kissed his forehead and smiled down at him.
"Now we'll be together forever!" He stated.
