Just pointing out that Mike didnāt even technically join hellfire himself. Eddie straight up tells us that he saw Mike and Dustin (probably Lucas as well) sitting at an outsider table and knowing that Theyāll be the future of hellfire. Eddie took them in so Mike didnāt even actively seek this. Wouldnāt be bad if he did though.
And something rather ironic is that the non-conformist club has a uniform lmao. The hellfire club members are still conforming, just not to societal standards. Theyāre confirming to Eddieās standards. Mike is forcing himself to conform just as much in hellfire as he is anywhere else. Mike isnāt really finding himself again, heās still very much trying to blend in with the crowd. Still trying to be normal and conform and overcompensating so much on that that heās leaving his individuality behind. Mike is shapeshifting this season. Heās pretending. He is Not yet accepting himself at all. And I think his aversion to popularity is not so much about him not caring what others think of him, but actually exactly about what others already think of him and how he just tries to blend into the crowd that others have decided on being the place where he belongs (I have an unfinished post about this thatās been rotting in my drafts for months lmaoo).
One thing I see on bylertok way too much is people pointing out that even though Will told Mike itās ānot possibleā that heād ever join another party (replace Mike), Mike still went and joined Hellfire after he told Will to grow up and move on from D&D in S3 (which Will ended up doing)
It takes everything in me not to summarize the situation every single damn time I see someone mentioning it as if itās proof that Mike ādoesnāt deserve Willā or something because itās so frustrating that people just donāt understand anything about Mike and try and cling to any bit of āfaultā in his actions to justify why Byler wouldnāt work and why they donāt ship it
Because this whole ordeal had nothing to do with Mike and Willās friendship, it was bought about in the first place by Mike and Elās ever incompatible relationship
Mike loves D&D, he loves writing, he loves being DM for the Party, he loves being with the Party. He never stopped loving these things, he stopped pursuing his interests because he was so over invested in being ānormalā, which in his mind means ditching his friends for his girlfriend. El doesnāt like D&D, she doesnāt share Mikeās interests in his favourite things and because of that, Mike dropped all of it in favour of making out with El. Because thatās what youāre supposed to do in a relationship, and so thatās what he did
Of course, none of that is Elās fault either; El is learning the world and will eventually learn what she likes personally when she befriends Max whilst Mike is lost in juggling between what he should like vs. what he actually does like
All that is to say;
Mike dropped D&D because of El
(again, not Elās fault Iām not trying to blame her for anything it just is what it is)
So circling back to the ānot possibleā moment, I wanna point out that Mikeās insecurity in that moment specifically is Will leaving him emotionally because Will already is physically leaving and Mike blames himself. Heās mentioned himself obviously that heās afraid of losing Will but heās also made it clear many times. After their fight, Mike just wants to know that Will would still choose him and Will assures him that he wouldnāt be replacing Mike. Will placed no expectations on Mike when he said this, he just wanted to reassure Mike that theyāre okay and that theyāll be okay which is exactly what Mike wanted
After Will and El left, Mike joined Hellfire because he could focus on doing the things he liked again without having to devote himself to being Elās boyfriend. I was happy for Mike to have D&D back when I first watched S4 and I know Will would be happy that Mike is finding himself again. And while weāre on the topic of Mike finding himself, since heās joined Hellfire heās started slowly accepting himself and accepting that he doesnāt care anymore if he fits into the standard or not. He doesnāt care about popularity or people liking him. He is growing and heās been getting his character development
Anyway thatās all I just love analysing Mike itās so interesting, but in this case I donāt think it even needs to be analysed. Mike isnāt himself around El and thatās got nothing to do with Willā thatās just Milevens relationship dynamic
#even when mike refused to pursue his interest in dnd he never acts like he genuinely doesnāt like it#and heās never shown to be insecure about being a nerd Unless it comes to El#thatās when heās insecure about that stuff#generally he just isnāt#and he also never pretended like he genuinely lost interest in dnd#instead he says that heās not in the mood to play rn#or literally that he will be there to play with will#but he very openly states that he feels like this is something he Had to let go of since heās growing up#like#yāall know what i mean??!#the theory that mike is super insecure about being a nerd#is solely based on the line āone day sheāll find out iām just some random nerdā#while the rest of the show very much shows us that Mike is Only insecure about his nerdy interests infront of el#Not generally#i think getting back into playing dnd after s3 is something mike did#because he realized that being gay wasnāt just a phase tied to childhood that he would overcome once he grows up#which is why he leaves his childhood behind as he thinks his gayness is tied to it#but again#heās proved wrong at the end of s3#so if he just IS gay#meaning his gayness never had anything to do with his childhood#meaning leaving his childhood doesnāt change anything#doesnāt make him like girls#what is the point in not pursuing dnd then?#so thatās why i think mike still plays dnd again#even though he doesnāt accept himself for being gay yet#even though he doesnāt accept himself for Who He Is yet#time for lenoraās opinion
