Hello all and happy Wednesday! If you’re back at work today, I feel your pain 😂 and I’m back with a check in to see what I’m #currentlyreading this fortnight. I’m making good progress through Voyager (two-thirds through), Kingdom of Ash (halfway through) and Sapiens (halfway through). I’m almost finished my re-read of Life After Life and it’s been wonderful 😍 I’ve nearly finished The Ten Thousand Doors of January on my Kindle and I’m still working on my buddy read of Light Rains Might Fall with Mr B. I’m doing less well with We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves and Far From The Madding Crowd which I was hoping to have finished but I’m blaming Christmas for that 😂 New books: #pachinko by #minjinlee which I’m reading (and loving) with Lynn from @breathe.andread Waiting For Ted by #mariekebigg starting this tonight with @booksbethanyreads 😁 Heart Of The Sun Warrior by #suelynntanauthor the second book in the Celestial Kingdom duology which I’m buddy reading with @keeperofpages we’re halfway through! The Aeneid by Virgil - reading this with a fab group of bookstagrammers. Running a bit behind but hoping to catch up tonight. I’m also listening to My Name Is Why by #lemnsissay on audiobook. About halfway through. Reading on my Kindle: When I Lived In Modern Times by #lindagrant this won the @womensprize in the year 2000 It Ends At Midnight by #harriettyceauthor about halfway through and enjoying it so far! So if my calculations are correct, that makes it 15 books currently being read 🙈 two up on a fortnight ago! I don’t know how I’m managing this by the way, come chat to me in the comments and let me know your opinions on any of these books! 😅 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #currentlyreadingpile #insatiablebookworm #multibookreader #justkeepreadingjustkeepreading https://www.instagram.com/p/CmuRE-grrH5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH April 7, 2021 The power of kisses... by Lemn Sissay INVISIBLE KISSES If there was ever one Whom when you were sleeping Would wipe your tears When in dreams you were weeping; Who would offer you time When others demand; Whose love lay more infinite Than grains of sand. If there was ever one To whom you could cry; Who would gather each tear And blow it dry; Who would offer help On the mountains of time; Who would stop to let each sunset Soothe the jaded mind. If there was ever one To whom when you run Will push back the clouds So you are bathed in sun; Who would open arms If you would fall; Who would show you everything If you lost it all. If there was ever one Who when you achieve Was there before the dream And even then believed; Who would clear the air When it’s full of loss; Who would count love Before the cost. If there was ever one Who when you are cold Will summon warm air For your hands to hold; Who would make peace In pouring pain, Make laughter fall In falling rain. If there was ever one Who can offer you this and more; Who in keyless rooms Can open doors; Who in open doors Can see open fields And in open fields See harvests yield. Then see only my face In the reflection of these tides Through the clear water Beyond the river side. All I can send is love In all that this is A poem and a necklace Of invisible kisses #nationalpoetrymonth #lemnsissay #invisiblekisses #powerofkisses https://www.instagram.com/p/CNXZRGgBdBgAlSjic5w-6bWC9Y7oSFQvHb9-vw0/?igshid=nz5t3bfbvhrn

I photographed author and broadcaster Lemn Sissay for Shortlist magazine a while ago. I was reminded of the shoot this morning when I heard him chatting on the radio. He was a joy to photograph and he never stopped moving and talking, and had plenty to say on a wide range of subjects. My hope was that I captured a bit of that vitality and charisma . . . . . . #picturesfromthebrokenroad #portraitphotography #portrait #magazineshoot #studioshoot #studiolighting #poet #author #broadcaster #lemnsissay #fromthearchive #happy #laughter @shortlistmagazine Art Diector @kevin_fay Photo Director @joannamoran

It’s lovely to be back at the @FoundlingMuseum and see how they’re continuing to help to transform the lives of young people, but also hear some of the difficulties that care leavers have faced over the years including during the pandemic.

We were able to understand first-hand the impact of spending time in care in the UK and its links with employment, housing, mental health, addiction, and the youth justice system, and some of the work that is being done to tackle these issues.
Tumblr media
Thank you @krissakabusi, Allan, and @lemnsissay also for joining and sharing your experiences of living in care. It’s so great to see the successes you’ve had.

There'll be no morning tweets for the forseable future. I'm rewriting my autobiography. It's taking more time than I expected. It's called "My Name is Why" and it is coming out next year on Canongate Books. And I shalln't speak anymore about it until it arrives. #Mynameiswhy. pic.twitter.com/102fbi8ns7

BOOK REVIEW 📖
My Name is Why by Lemn Sissay.
This book was incredible. Lemn Sissay's memoir about his experience growing up with a foster family until such time when they decided they no longer wanted him and he returned to the care system for the rest of his childhood.
I don't even know where to begin with this review, what Lemn went through as a child should be no one's experience growing up. From abandonment, racism, lack of opportunity and more. He really went through it all - on his own, without family and few friends. He was left with the support of a system that is built to provide very little support, it's heartbreaking, eye opening and created in an incredible format.
It's books like this that remind me why I love reading, it's not just something I enjoy, it's a hobby that teaches me everyday. I'll never walk in the shoes of Lemn Sissay or any of the authors I read, they are their own shoes and only they themselves can experience what they have. Reading books like this help you to understand what different lives look like and what other people have been through. They educate you, shape you and help you grow.Just read it, it's a must read.
5 ⭐
*NB I listened to this as an audiobook, I can only imagine this enhanced the reading experience due to the books format being statements/letters from different people - so if you're in to audiobooks I highly recommend consuming this memoir that way.

🇬🇧 🇪🇹 'My Name Is Why': Lemn Sissay's walk towards the light | The Stream by Al Jazeera English Lemn Sissay is one of the UK's most revered writers. He has authored several collections of poetry, as well as plays for both stage and public radio, and was official poet of the 2012 London Olympics. Now Chancellor of the University of Manchester, Sissay has overcome a host of early challenges - not least the often painful experiences of growing up in a British foster family and, later, an ill-equipped care system. Sissay battled for years to get hold of his care files, which now form the backbone of 'My Name Is Why'. The memoir unswervingly charts his battle out of darkness and out into the light - a theme outlined by verses that introduce each chapter of the book. Fresh from winning the 2019 PEN Pinter Prize, Sissay joins The Stream on Wednesday to talk about his journey to reconnect with his Ethiopian heritage, as well as his creative processes and inspirations.
