2023 Pirate Display

A largish redcoat fort I built as part of a pirate collaborative build with CoWLUG and DENLUG. It will be joined with builds from 10 other local builders to form a massive layout. My section features 4 powered lantern lights, a motorized windmill, and motorized flying seagulls.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: Extended Cast Pt. 2

1. Tia Dalma/Calypso 

Tia Dalma is remembered as the Voodoo Priestess who guides Jack Sparrow and co. through Dead Man’s Chest, before her true identity as Calypso, the Grecian sea demigoddess and Davy Jones’ former, treacherous lover, is revealed in At World’s End. She proved the most difficult minifigure for me to make, as with no defining accessories, she relied heavily upon the details to capture her memorable appearance, which I learned through the process of making her that she had two separate, yet deceptively similar outfits. Despite spending the majority of her screen-time in her outfit from At World’s End, I chose to emulate her look from Dead Man’s Chest, with a more complete dress. 

2. Mr. Ian Mercer

Mr. Mercer is the sort of Pirates character you would entirely forget about until re-watching the latter two films of the trilogy. This is due primarily to his monumentally sparing appearances throughout the films as Lord Cutler Beckett’s trusted advisor, informant, and field agent. Nonetheless, when he was onscreen he proved a quiet, calculating, and intimidating character that I wanted to be sure was captured appropriately in LEGO form. He uses a dark brown torso and dual-molded dark brown and black legs to capture his more monotone complexion. He wears a remarkably similar, yet more toned down uniform compared to Becket, with a simple brown waist-coat and gold-rimmed jacket. But while the head-hair combo mold, painted over in dark brown, really helps to nail his look, I believe I am most impressed with how perfectly the pre-existing head-print captures the look of David Schofield while playing the character. It was originally from the Mandarin as seen in the LEGO Iron Man 3 sets, but it works remarkably well for the East India Trading Company’s most ruthless operative. 

3. Murtogg and Mulroy

Once again, charatcers whose presence you likely have forgotten, and whose names you almost certainly don’t know, Murtogg and Mulroy are two Royal Marines who are remembered mostly for their iconic conversation with Jack Sparrow in Curse of the Black Pearl on the dock. However, their appearance here is based off of their more dynamic roles in At World’s End, where they are conscripted into, and thus dressed as Company Soldiers. They each use the same torso print and simple black legs and tricornes with the edges painted gold. Their faces, which do their best to convey their comedic expressions, are the only distinguishing features of these two. Originally, I was going to just make two generic Company Crewmen to crew my Flying Dutchman MOC, but I decided rather late in the process to change them into slightly more memorable characters, due to how little effort it would take to do so.
