wanted to share my favorite bird (her name is Star 馃挮)
Beautiful Legbar! Did you know Punnet created them? He loved chickens! Also did you know his family were strawberry growers that's why his last name is Punnet because a punnet is a basket for strawberries 馃崜

This is the first egg laid today from one of my mum's young Legbar hens. Isn't it the most beautiful colour?
Yes, eggs aren't just white or brown folks!

Chicken Science Swednesday: Chicken as a liquid
Many people are unaware that some chickens, when exposed to direct sunlight, become puddles:
Tumblr media
There is no reason to be alarmed, as this process is 100% reversible. Indeed, most chickens will return to their solid form within a few minutes of melting, without any external assistance.
Don't worry if you were unaware of this. Even chickens who are not currently puddles are often confused by these encounters:

one of my younger chickens is limping and I don鈥檛 know why :( it doesn鈥檛 appear like she has bumblefoot, although she does have a dot on one of her feet, but up close it looks like dirt (photo under the cut). I don鈥檛 know what to do to help her? if anyone has any advice, I鈥檇 deeply appreciate it

Bibu has been unwell for a couple of weeks now. This morning I stuck a needle into her abdomen and aspirated some slightly cloudy yellowish fluid. Which means she has ascites.
There are several causes for ascites, but none of them have a good prognosis. Especially in such a young bird. Most common causes are liver failure, heart failure, cancer, and reproductive issues like internal laying, egg yolk peritonitis, and salpingitis. Given that this started at or around onset of laying I strongly suspect internal laying. We will be euthanizing her.

Finally got to play with the chicks when I cleaned the brooder this morning! And I took pictures! This is our cookies and cream, not the best picture, but you can see her extra toe and feathered leg.
Tumblr media
The saphire jewel, she still has her egg tooth!
Tumblr media
The wyandotte, she's our biggest chick. We're hoping for a blue, but right now it's hard to tell if she's going to be blue laced or black. Dark blue can be difficult to tell from black even on adult birds.
Tumblr media
The cream legbar, she's our smallest chick.
Tumblr media
The Rhode Island Red, 11yo is thinking about naming her Paprika.
Tumblr media
And our olive egger. She's probably going to grow up to look like a legbar, but a little to the left. Right now the kids can't really tell her apart from the legbar and the wyandotte.
