NEVER lets you pay for dinner. he's always sneaky about it, but even if you put your card down, he subtly exchanges your card with his so you don't have to pay a single cent. he's always interested in what you're doing! even if you're just reading a book on the couch or doing your makeup, he's watching attentively and asking questions. he loves to listen to you talk about your day. as soon as you come home from work or from a day out with friends or family, he's asking you how your day went, what you did, if you had a good time, etc. he wants the details, too. so don't leave anything out! he just loves spending time with you. you could be doing the most mundane tasks, and he'd be looking at you with the most loving face. seriously, you could just be like, cleaning the fridge and he'd be staring at you like 🥹 overall, jinki is the most attentive and loving boyfriend you could ask for<3

very loud about his love for you! words of affirmation are 100% how he shows his love in your relationship. you could have just woken up, crust in the corners of your eyes, your hair a mess, stinky morning breath, and creases on your face from laying on the pillow, and he'd just be like "you're so pretty :3" like, omfg. he loooves showing you off, but still likes to keep your relationship private. it's very conflicting for him. he loves taking you to dinner with his family! he loves to watch you talk with his mom while making food and drinking wine. i think he'd like to let you lead the way in the relationship, just so he knows that you two are always doing things that you love and are comfortable with. but!! if you don't feel like making the decisions and just want him to take you out and make the decisions, he's more than happy to do so! he just wants you to be happy :))) overall, jjong wants you to feel as happy, loved, and comfortable as possible in the relationship! kibum loooves going out and showing you off !! but unlike jonghyun, he doesn't gaf about keeping your relationship private- he wants everyone to know that you're his and he's yours! will spoil you to no end! you two could just be walking down the street, and you'd point out a cute skirt or something in a store window, and he'd immediately walk in to buy it for you. he treats valentines day like the most important day of the year. he'll pull out all the stops- breakfast in bed, gives you little presents throughout that day, takes you out for a FANCY dinner (probably reserved the whole restaurant for a few hours just so you two would be the only ones there), he even picks out your outfit and jewelry for the day so you two can match. speaking of which!! he loooves wearing matching outfits! not in a tacky, literally wearing the exact same clothes kind of way- but a "classy" matching. like, wearing the same color scheme. just something subtle as another way to show the world that you two are together. in conclusion: kibum is quite literally obsessed with you, and he wants EVERYONE to know it.

immediately obsessed with you from the beginning of the relationship! he is the single most husband-material man in the world, idc. will make you breakfast in bed as often as he can! even if you guys don't live together, he'll literally doordash a breakfast burrito or smth to your house just so he's sure you eat something in the morning. probably starts looking for rings just a few months into the relationship- but he won't tell you that bc he doesn't wanna freak you out. he's so sure that you're THE ONE, though. acts of service is 100% his love language. he just likes doing the little things for you! whether it's hanging up your jacket when you come home from work, washing the dishes, or learning how to make your favorite food, he's more than happy to do it! probably learns how to braid your hair! idk, i just feel like that's something he'd do. like, he'd wanna learn how to braid your hair so it's out of your face while you're sleeping</3. he loves talking about your future together! marriage, kids, retirement, all of it! he just loves to imagine your life together<3. minho is the guy that's in it for the long haul- he's the one you know you're gonna grow old with.

he's a little weird!! but you love him, so it's okay!! just has the oddest little ways to show his love for you. like, i feel like he bites?? not hard, it's really more like, mouthing?? like, you guys will just be sitting on the couch watching tv, and he'll just gently bite your shoulder. and he'll stay there for a while, just like, holding your skin with his teeth. he likes to send you songs that remind him of you, but sometimes they're just so?????? like, he'll send you a song and be like "this came on shuffle and reminded me of you :3" and you're just sitting there confused like, bro this is literally "fireball" by pitbull??? silly stuff aside, i feel like he'd like to let you plan things!! not bc he doesn't want to- he just likes to let you take charge! you two will be deciding on where to go for dinner, and you'll be like "let's go here!" and he'll just be like, "okay :3" no arguing at all, he'll just go along with whatever you say! but he still likes to take care of you! like, he'll do little things like, zipping up your jacket, or holding the car door open for you, or bringing the blankets up to your chin while you're in bed so you don't get cold :((( also, kind of like the random biting thing, i feel like he just likes to hold you. like, you'll be standing at the stove cooking dinner, and he'll come up behind you and hug you TIGHT. like, you can barely breathe, but you know he just loves you so much, so let him squeeze the air out of you <3. taemin is the type of boyfriend that wants to be romantic, but he's just not really sure how! you two have your own way of going about things, and that makes you happy :)

Taemin: Distant Bells Are Ringing

I don’t always leave an author’s note but I loved writing this for my anonnie’s request <3. So much so that I listened to both the instrumental pieces I mention in this headcanon whilst writing it, and I 100% would recommend you guys do the same bc I felt like crying the whole time lolzzz hope u like it !! :)

A sound of faint, classical music catches your attention as you’re exiting your dark SUV. Your bodyguard outstretches his hand in your direction, offering to lead you carefully out of the vehicle. You look around happily as you lift the sides your long, elegant gown, planting your heels firmly on the ground as you made your way to the entrance of the wedding venue.

“Thank you for coming tonight,” the familiar voice of your wedded friend’s brother greets you at the doors. “I can’t believe you made it!”

“Of course I had to come, how could I miss one of my closest friend’s wedding!? Thank you for inviting me,” you say as the boy leads you inside.

You walk into the beautifully decorated wedding venue, admiring every detail about the grandiose place in awe. Your eyes travel from the high vaulted ceilings to the intricately designed stained-glass windows. The center isle is filled with gorgeous arrangements of flowers and floral arches. All around, people were murmuring in excitement as the ceremony would soon begin.

You’re about to walk to your seat when all of a sudden, you nearly let out a shriek at the touch of a person’s arm against your shoulder.

“What the—,” you quickly turn around and find yourself making unexpectedly hard eye-to-eye contact with none other than…

Lee Taemin.

Honestly? This probably wouldn’t have been so bad if it weren’t for the absolute heart-wrenching heartbreak I had to endure all alone after we broke up…

Your mind quickly threatens to recall all the miserable nights you cried yourself to sleep for the boy standing in front of you, but you immediately brush them aside and plant the biggest smile on your face instead.

I can’t think of the past now.

“Taemin! Oh, I didn’t know you were here,” you say, awkwardly looking around to make sure no people were looking your way. It was no secret to the media that you and Taemin were once a favorite celebrity couple sought out by all kinds of fans, journalists, and paparazzis alike.

“Of course I’d be here. Don’t you remember we met through the bride?”

“Oh, right,” you answer, letting out an awkward half-laugh.

“I saw you walk in and I couldn’t not tell you how… how amazing you look!” he says, an innocent smile spreading across his face.

“Thank you, Taemin. You look pretty handsome yourself, actually,” you cheekily say back.

“Mister and Missus,” the voice of an older gentleman approaches you both. “Allow me too guide you to your reserved seats tonight,” he says, guiding you and Taemin into the ceremonial room.

“Oh, we’re not togeth—” you stop your sentence when you feel Taemin place his hand against your back, following the gentleman to wherever he seemed fit.

“Thank you,” you say to the gentleman anyway once you’ve reached your reserved seats.

Taemin sits next to you and, to your surprise, there aren’t many other people sitting in your section yet.

“Uh, Taemin?” You carefully look around the room before whispering into his ear, “we’re the only people sitting in this row right now… doesn’t it look a little…”

“Scandalous?” He finishes, giving you a smirk. “I’d be surprised if someone doesn’t take any pictures of us tonight.”

“Right,” you huff, turning your attention back to the front of the room.

For a moment, neither says a word, until Taemin finally speaks up.

“So… how’ve you been?”

“I’ve been… I’ve been good.”

“Yeah, I hear you’ve released a few albums since we last spoke. They’re really good. I really liked your most recent comeback,” he says quietly.

“Thank you, it means… a lot, actually.”

There is another awkward silence, before you speak up this time.

“How about you? How have you and SHINee been?”

“We’re still aiming to be the best we can be,” he smiles. “You don’t listen to us anymore, huh?”

“What? Of course I do. Just because you and I were… a thing… doesn’t mean I don’t love Minho any less.”

He scoffed. “Minho was always your bias, huh? Even when we were a ‘thing’?”

“Well, duh,” you roll your eyes, “look at him. He’s gorgeous!”

“Whatever,” he says, looking around him as a few other couples and guests slowly filled the seats more and more.

“You know,” he says, crossing his arms and turning his eyes toward you, “I only started talking to you just now ‘cause I don’t think I know anyone else here…”

“I thought you said you wanted to talk to me to tell me I looked pretty?”

“Oh, oops, yeah, that too,” he smirked. “It worked, ‘cause you’re still talking to me.”

“You’re still so annoying,” you say, crossing your legs.

He laughs mischievously, lightly punching your thigh.

“Isn’t it crazy how we almost instantly clicked again after so many years of not talking, though?”

You don’t answer him for a moment, thinking carefully of the words you’d say next.

“I guess,” you start to respond, “even after we went our separate ways, our comfort when being around each other never really went away.”

“Hmm,” he ponders, “why do you think that is?”

You don’t get a chance to respond because the ceremony begins, and all guests’ attention turns towards the front of the room.

The wedding ceremony of you and Taemin’s mutual friend plays out flawlessly beautiful.

An organist begins playing O Holy Night, at the request for the bride’s entrance. The bride walks in gracefully as ever. Her princess-styled silk dress was intricately decorated with mesh flowers, her long-sleeved white gloves featured complex designs of floral delicacies. Even from the bride’s back-view, her long, delicately designed dress tail captured and maintained all eyes on her.

Taemin had quietly moved his eyes from the bride at one point and turned his attention secretly to you.

You also looked lavishing in your dark green gown tonight, beautifully complementing the colors of the wedding decor altogether. Taemin couldn’t help but wonder if…

…if you could ever be his bride.

His eyes slowly began to water at the recollection of hundreds of shared memories alongside of you as your partner.

All the laughs, the jokes, the cries, the arguments, the make-ups, the love you shared privately in more ways than one.

He had… missed you.

Why’d we have to break up? He thoughtfully wonders as the bride and groom begin taking their vows.

If only we’d worked through our problems and not run away from them…

But it was almost every day that the arguments would arise.

The bride and groom exchange wedding bands and hold their hands together.

Taemin turns his eyes from the soon-to-be-married couple and focuses again on you.

Yes, while you were physically close to him at this very moment, he couldn’t help but think about how far you truly were.

If only I’d tried harder from my end, Taemin thinks defeatedly. I’ve been through the best and the absolute worst of this industry. If only I hadn’t let the malicious false rumors of that cheating scandal get the best of you…

The old priest raises his hands towards the crowd.

…maybe it would’ve been us on that pulpit by now.

He announces the couple as husband and wife.

But I couldn’t protect you without losing myself in the process.

The groom and bride share their first kiss as husband and wife, and the room erupts into loud cheers and happy tears. The organist beings playing the all-too familiar tune of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, and the new man and wife begin preparing to make their way back down the isle for their final grand ceremonial exit.

Taemin closes his eyes as a couple tears begin rolling down his cheeks. He’s in too deep in his own thoughts when he feels the soft touch of a cloth rubbing against his face.

His eyes open and he makes direct eye contact with you.

You’d taken a handkerchief from your purse and wiped the tears gently from his face, not saying a word.

All around you, white confetti and red flower petals fall as the bride and groom begin exiting the room, the cheers of their guests roaring louder, the organist’s musical arrangement filling the room with l endearing excitement.

You and Taemin are caught frozen in each other’s gaze for a moment in time. Your hand is gently cupped around his face, his tears have slowed, and your emotions are caught in a trance.

What ever will we do? You think to yourself.

How could I ever move on from you? He thinks to himself.

How could I ever… you look into his eyes,

…have left you? he wonders,

…And now I find myself, you ponder,

…having feelings for you, he comes closer,

…even after all, you close your eyes,

…this, his nose brushes lightly against yours,

…time! your lips clash against his.

All around you, couples take notice of you and Taemin sharing an intimate moment together. The gentlemen cheer and begin taking their partners hand in hand, leaning them back against their arms to share kisses of their own in celebration of light of a new marriage.

You shake your head, not wanting to hear the words you longed to wish for.

“No, Taemin, I’m sorry I ever doubted you. I’m sorry I abandoned the trust I had in you… in us.”

“I should’ve gone back even after all the—”

“There’s no point in bringing up the past anymore, Tae,” you whisper.

“But I have to—”

“Shh,” you gently place a finger against his lips. “I received all the proof from your agency once the investigation was over. I now know you never had betrayed me like that.”

“You… you do?”

You smile. “I’m sorry I never went back for you. I was too ashamed to face you after you were proven innocent.”

“No,” he whispers. “I’m the one who should’ve fought harder.”

“Tae—”

Your words are cut short at the realization that there was no point in arguing further. You had grown and reflected, and so had he.

Knowing what you both knew now, there was an opportunity for the trust to grow back.

The wedding reception had gone just as fun and smoothly as the ceremony. The guests had gathered around the bride and her groom to cut their enormous marbled-flavored cake. A couple minutes before the cake-cutting begun, the bride caught a glimpse of you and Taemin and quickly walked over to you both.

“Hey, you smoochy lovebirds, why didn’t you tell me you got back together!?”

“What? How’d you even know—”

“Oh, please!” she giggled, “You started the little kissing-train back at the venue, didn’t ya? Look, it’s already making headlines!!” She excitedly pulls out her phone from her sleek reception gown’s pockets and points the screen at you both.

Indeed, there’s a half-blurry picture of you and Taemin sharing a loving, lasting kiss amidst the newlyweds’ grand exit. The headline at the top reads in bolder letters: BREAKING!! HAVE THE STARRY-EYED COUPLE ALLEGEDLY MADE A COMEBACK!?

Underneath the post, thousands of comments were already flooding the media with fans excitedly screaming their heads off at the sight of their favorite celebrity couple rumored to be seen together again. Fans from all around the industry—even fans who didn’t actively listen to you or Taemin’s music—enthusiastically shared well wishes and celebration for you both, many of these fans hoping that this time your relationship would lead to a much happier ending.

“I’ll say, your kissing stunt was absolutely perfect!” the bride excitedly bounces up and down. “All my wedding exit pictures have guests sharing kisses in the background and it’s so… so beautiful!! I’ll have to get that moment framed for our new home!”

You never thought the day would come when you would run into your ex-boyfriend, Taemin, again, and never in your wildest dreams did you think you would find him on your doorstep with a sheepish smile on his lips and an apologetic look in his eyes.

“Taemin… what are you doing here?” You breathe out in shock. Your hand gripped the wooden door tightly, you could feel your hand starting to cramp up, the last memory of him that you had was of him walking out the door and leaving you behind with a broken heart about five years ago.

You clutch the knife in your hand as you slowly put your fork down on the table, you can feel your heart pinching in pain as you stare at Taemin, on the outside you look emotionless, but on the inside, you are falling apart.

“This, what we have,” He says. “It’s not working, we have been fighting for weeks about literally anything and everything, and we can’t even find a middle ground,” You had been fighting for weeks when you had tried to talk to him, but your conversations would always end in a fight, you weren’t sure what had happened, but you were tired of it as well. However, you still wanted to fight for what you had with him, you still wanted to work things out with him, but it seemed like he had given up.

“I’ve tried talking to you, Taemin,” You say. You watch him stand from his chair but keep your eyes straight ahead. “But you keep blowing up on me, you don’t want to tell me why, don’t you think I’m tired of that also?” You tried to remain calm and keep your voice even as you spoke. “You keep pushing me away when I try to break through to you,” You put the knife down on the table and slowly lift your gaze to look at his face. “What’s going on? Is something bothering you at work?” You watch his jaw clench. “Let me guess, I wouldn’t understand?” You stand from your chair, walk around the table, and approach him. “I’ve heard it over and over the past few weeks.”

“Well, I don’t think I’m wrong,” He says. You stop in front of him and your gaze hardens. “You wouldn’t understand what’s happening, or going on, so why should I bother trying to explain it to you?”

“Because I’m your partner!” You say a bit too loudly. You clear your throat and glance at the plate on the table, that was still untouched by him. “I can try to understand, or make me understand, Taemin,” You lift your gaze to meet his, but he does everything to avoid meeting your eyes. “Even if I don’t understand, it would be better for you to let it out, instead of keeping it all inside.”

“Why should I bother?!” He says loudly, making you flinch and take a step back from him. “I would be wasting my breath, and my time!” You could feel your eyes burning as tears began to form in them, his words were harsh and cutting you like a knife. “You will never understand, so it’s best we end things now before either of us gets hurt even more.”

“Taemin…” You whisper, and reach out for him, only for him to pull his arm away and take a step back. You feel your tears spill down your cheeks at that movement, it felt like a knife had been jabbed into your heart. He turns around and makes his way towards the door, you watch him pull it open and look back at you.

“I’ll come for my things later, or throw them out,” He says before he walks out the door and shuts it. As it shuts, your knees buckle, and you crumble to the floor, Is this really it? Was this really the end between you both?

You hadn’t heard from him for two weeks before you had boxed up his things and sent them to his company before letting the landlord know that you would be moving out by the end of the week. You weren’t ever expecting to see Taemin in front of you again, especially not willingly.

“Can I come in?” He asks, he almost looks uncertain about what he is asking. “Only if it’s just for a minute,” You step aside and he slowly enters your apartment. “Thank you,” You close the door once he is inside and turn towards him.

“Do you want to sit down?” You ask. He shakes his head, and you watch as he begins to fiddle with his fingers. “Okay, then maybe you can explain what you’re doing here and how you found me?”

“Well, I had asked around,” He says. “We have some mutual friends,” You nod your head. He takes in a deep breath. “And for why I’m here… well, I would like to apologise for five years ago,” You feel a pinch in your heart. “I had no right to be like that towards you, treat you like that…”

“Taemin,” You begin, only for him to lift his hand and stop you from saying more.

“I was going through things, and feelings and emotions that I couldn’t explain or even understand, but that’s no excuse for my behaviour,” He says. “And I needed to come and apologise for that, for treating you like that all those years ago,” You nod your head, waiting for him to continue. “I know I’m five years too late, but I’m truly sorry for my words and my behaviour towards you.”

“Well…” You quietly say. “I appreciate you apologising to me for that, I am also sorry for what was said during that time,” He shakes his head and lifts his hands.

“No, no, you don’t need to apologise, you tried your hardest to get me to open up to you, but I was just being foolish,” He says and lowers his hands. “And I hope that we can become friends again, I would completely understand if you wouldn’t want that,” You softly smile at him.

“You do know that it would take a while for both of us to be able to trust one another completely again and that it will be hard work, right?” You ask. He nods his head. “Then we can give it a shot,” You knew that it would take you a while to trust him fully again, but hopefully one day you could have a beautiful friendship with him again. “Would you like to come over for a movie sometime?”

“I would like that, but can we make it at my place?” He asks. “I recently got two cats and I don’t want to leave them alone for too long during the evenings,” You nod your head.

“You should have started with your cats, I would have immediately agreed to be friends with you again,” You jokingly say. He chuckles and gives an apologetic look. “Just let me know the day and the time, and I’ll see if I can be there.”

“I will do that,” He says. “Can you give me your number, so we can arrange this?” You nod your head and walk past him towards the couch where you had your phone on charge, you unplug it and turn towards him, handing your phone to him. “Thank you,” You watch as he enters his number before you hear a buzz coming from his pocket. “I just sent a message to my phone, so I can save your number,” He hands your phone back to you and you lock it. “Thank you for your time, Y/n.”

“Thank you for coming all the way here to apologise,” You say. “It means a lot to me,” He nods his head, giving you a small smile. “Send me a picture of your cats, okay?” He laughs and nods his head as he begins making his way towards the door.

“I will, I’ll take one ASAP when I get home to send to you,” He says. You walk behind him towards the door. “Take care, Y/n,” He opens the door and steps outside.

“You too, Taemin,” You say. He walks down the hallway towards the elevator, and you watch him until he steps into the elevator before giving him a wave, he returns the wave, a bigger smile now on his lips, and it seems like a mountain had been lifted from his shoulders. It felt the same for you, like a mountain that had weighed you down for five years had finally been lifted.

BACKGROUND/HEADCANONS.

TW: Abandono parental, alcoolismo, dificuldade financeira.

O começo da infância de Hyunsik foi muito feliz. Apesar de sua mãe não ter muito dinheiro para dar coisas legais à ele, o pai tinha uma condição financeira melhor e podia cuidar dos dois, além de ambos serem muito carinhosos e sempre darem atenção à ele. Seu sonho era ser astronauta e ele amava passar o tempo lendo livrinhos de astronomia, além de assistir programas e filmes na TV sobre o espaço.

Entretanto, essa fase da vida dele durou muito pouco. Quando ele tinha 8 anos, seus pais se divorciaram depois que o amor entre eles foi esfriando e seu pai se apaixonou por outra mulher, com quem se casou e teve outra filha dois anos depois. Sua mãe, desolada, começou a se afundar em bebida e dívidas. O pai ajudava com o básico, mas não dava dinheiro o suficiente para eles viverem uma vida confortável.

Por conta disso, com apenas 14 anos, ele decidiu tentar ajudar um emprego para poder ajudar sua mãe financeiramente e pagar suas dívidas porque não aguentava mais ver ela vivendo como estava. Como era muito novo, não tinha muitas opções de emprego e acabou julgando que sua melhor chance era virar um idol de k-pop para ganhar dinheiro como celebridade. Depois de fazer audição em algumas empresas, só teve a sorte de passar na VENTURA Music. No começo ele não tinha talento nenhum, mas conseguiu aprender rápido e debutou dois anos depois, com 16, como dançarino principal e vocalista no grupo 2U.

Apesar de não ganhar tanto dinheiro assim logo no ínicio por serem rookies, o grupo fez bastante sucesso em seus primeiros anos, o que ajudou Hyunsik (ou Hyun.C, na época) a dar apoio à mãe. De 2010 à 2011, quando o grupo entrou em hiatus, ele participou de inúmeros programas de variedade para conseguir algum dinheiro. Em 2014 ele teve seu primeiro trabalho como coreógrafo e em 2015 começou sua carreira solo para não ter que depender do grupo para conseguir sua renda. Até hoje se mantém ativo como coreógrafo e solista, ganhando a maior parte do seu dinheiro através dos seus trabalhos solo.

A ⇴ ATTENTION

He was more than happy to let you do your own thing, Taemin didn’t pay too much attention to you, knowing that if you needed him you’d always call out to him, and if you didn’t need him, then you were alright.

The two of you bickered over silly things quite a lot of the time, usually bickering for longer than the actual job would take. Things like who would pick up the remote or who would answer the door when your food delivery arrived were common things that you’d bicker over whenever you hung out together.

C ⇴ COMFORT

There was often a moment of panic in Taemin when he saw you were struggling, he fretted quite a lot of the time whether he was doing the right thing to help you. Once he had stopped worrying, Taemin would be right there for you, letting you guide him so that he knew exactly what he could do for you.

D ⇴ DISAGREEMENTS

It was incredibly rare for the two of you to disagree with one another, you and Taemin definitely weren’t the argumentative type of people. Usually if you did disagree it was because one of you was getting frustrated elsewhere and found yourself getting pushed to the point of wanting to snap by the other person. When you did, it would never last long though once whoever was frustrated had calmed down.

E ⇴ EARLY YEARS

Although neither of you could remember exactly when you both met, you could always remember just being with each other. It was something that the two of you often bickered about as you tried to figure out which one of the two was actually the first one to say hello and which of you was the first one to strike up conversation, even though you would never actually get the answers that you wanted.

Taemin’s family always asked about you, whenever they saw Taemin after hearing how he was, the conversation would turn and they’d ask how you were too. When they saw the two of you together, quite often you’d find that they would be asking about you and Taemin would be second best. He got used to it though, standing back and waiting for his turn to be able to tell everyone how he was doing too.

G ⇴ GETTING TOGETHER

Most of the time the two of you preferred the comfort of home when you hung out together. You both greatly enjoyed the fact that it was just the two of you alone and that you could talk freely without worrying who was around, knowing that with Taemin there was always someone around and nosing.

H ⇴ HABITS

The two of you had a habit of forgetting about other people who were around you when you hung out with others. It usually didn’t take long before the two of you just started to talk between yourselves and forget that you were supposed to be engaging with the conversation of the group instead.

I ⇴ INSIDE JOKES

Your inside jokes were things that the two of you were very careful that you spoke about, you never liked to refer to them around other people out of fear that someone would ask about them. You liked to make sure that you kept them between the two of you so that only you could ever laugh about them.

When he gets jealous, it’s one of the rare times when you really see Taemin standing up for himself. He didn’t like for anyone else to even think for a second that there was a chance that they would be able to consider themselves as your best friend. He would be subtle, but Taemin would definitely drop a couple of hints to make sure that whoever was in front of him knew that he was your only best friend.

Taemin got a kick out of spending time with you. The feeling of excitement that he got whenever he opened the door and saw you or found you walking down the street when you planned to meet up outside never went away, he still definitely felt like a big kid whenever he got to spend his time with you.

He loved how you were always there for him and how settled he always felt when he was with you. Life was pretty speedy most of the time for Taemin, but when he got to see you, he got to escape for a little while. It was pretty rare for the two of you to even talk about work as you liked to give Taemin the chance to think about something else for a little while and bring a bit of normality for him.

The two of you first met at a dance school when you were young. Immediately your eyes were drawn to Taemin as you watched him, stunned by just how talented he was, and so as you tried to learn from him, you spent a lot of time with him too, soon striking up quite the friendship with him during the classes.

There weren’t many people that Taemin would be nonsense around, but you were one of them. No one made him feel as comfortable and so unpressured as you did, it was all about just being himself with you.

Taemin was obsessed with your smile and how comforting it was for him. You could reassure him pretty easily with a smile and make sure that he knew that you were there and that he wasn’t by himself.

Being able to do normal with you was something that Taemin appreciated the most about your friendship. Silly things like laying out on the floor after stuffing your faces with food or rolling around on the floor as you laughed at a terrible cheesy film were all the things that Taemin enjoyed doing with you.

You opinion is something that Taemin particularly values, especially when it comes to work. If he has a song, or a routine, you’ll often get given a spoiler of what he’s working on so that he can get your opinion.

Whenever he went away for work, Taemin loved to give you a new photo of him to place somewhere in your bedroom. He never liked for you to forget about your best friend when he was away, but also he hoped that the photo would make you feel a bit better too whenever you missed him.

He’s never shy to tell you just how grateful he is for your support, every time you’re there to support him, whether alone or with the group, he’s always sure to tell you that he appreciates it. Seeing how much Taemin values your support only encourages you to be there for him more and give him plenty of encouragement.

On the rare chance that he gets time off, relaxing is Taemin’s main focus. You often organise trips for the two of you so that he can get just that, knowing exactly how he likes to rest and recover from a busy schedule.

As the tradition goes, Taemin will grant five wishes to any human who just happens to help him out in any way. Why five? Because merfolk are simply polite. They don’t want to put people under pressure and also allow them to reverse any wishes that have gone wrong. 

As it’s common among most merfolk, Taemin has grown out his hair halfway down his fin. He uses knots and shells to keep it under control, but a zebrafish occasionally gets tangled in it.

He hates to admit it, but shrimps bully him regularly. Taemin has yet to figure out why they pick on him. He tries not to cross their territory.

His house is made of random stones from the shore and a massive coral reef. The entrance is framed by at least 200 scrunched-up plastic bottles, tied together with a metal piece that was once a long lost anchor chain’s fragment. Other merfolk prefer to stay in abandoned boats or deeper grounds, sunken submarines even, but Taemin is comfortable in a more busy environment. It’s easier to feel the tides and stay updated with the latest gossip or news that he receives from the local shark.

His tail is a little skinny, which is unusual for merfolk his age. Although he’s tried everything from eating more algae to swimming an extra mile, it remained as lithe as it gets. Taemin figures that it’s an evolutionary thing. In a mertribe, some members might have to squeeze through shipwrecks to get food and housing resources. It does feel like an advantage for scavenging.

Taemin’s five cousins swam abroad to get to know the world. He doesn’t feel ready yet, or say, likely wants to linger in his hut for a little while. He’s content with where he’s at. He may be playful, but he’s not a character that likes risks. However: One day, Taemin wants to see a tropical island reef. 

Then again, he also likes cold waters. Winter is his favorite season because ‘the sea gets a roof’. He likes to knock against the frozen surface from below to hear the ephemeral sound, and find chunks large enough to climb onto. Taemin’s heard a lot about the merfolk in the arctic regions and knows how to talk to sea lions, and potentially polar bears.

One of his hobbies is carrying home extremely rare objects that humankind left in the depths of the ocean. A rotten old ship steering wheel from the 18th century is his entire pride. Car parts and broken statues are a close runner-up. He hates and loves his hobby because crafting with these bizarre objects, as fun as it is, also means they’re more likely to fall apart.

Sometimes, Taemin watches humans eat ice cream at the pier. He hides behind a motorboat at the quay and only lets his eyes peek out. Truth be told, he’s jealous that they found ways to flavor the ice.

Another obsession he has is crafting jewelry. Taemin likes to string up random shells and pearls with whatever can serve best as a little thread. He ties all of it around his waist and neck for fun.

As of lately, Taemin is in the know: There’s a famous decades-old superhero comic with a merman in it, alongside an amazon, a bat guy, and a cat lady, most curiously. He overheard a conversation at the harbor. Apparently, there’s a recent movie series. He keeps on wondering why they’d call this ‘water-man’, the alleged protagonist, such an obvious name. However, Taemin is reassured that humans like to imagine merfolk in a positive way.

Merman upkeep is sometimes tedious. Brushing out his scales is even more tiring than hair maintenance. But you gotta stay fly to impress the jellyfish.

Taemin’s absolute pet peeve is people spitting out their chewing gum into the water. And throwing in their coffee cups. They turn fuzzy after a minute.

There are ways in which he could go on land, but it takes a full week until his legs part and look fully human. He has no plans to live above ground anytime soon, though.

He can sing very well, but his audience are mostly larger crowds of fish.

Taemin owns a rusty dagger to fend for himself, but he keeps it locked in a treasure chest with no intent of using it. His father gave it to him in a sort of ritual he didn’t really understand. If someone starts a massive fight with him and he can’t by all means avoid it, he agreed with himself that he’ll just wrap that person or animal into his hair and free them once they’ve calmed down. That logic hasn’t worked with the shrimps because they’re insufferable to him, but with everyone else he’s confident that they can talk things out.

Since he turned 15, Taemin carries at least 32 tattoos on him. That one was another complicated ritual... involving the spikes of a lionfish, and a batch of octopus ink. Yeah, the one that’s poisonous to humans. Some tattoos are visible during daytime, others only show at night. The majority of them are stretched across his back, hidden by the giant sway of hair.

It’s easier for him to swim upwards than downwards. Deep sea animals really scare Taemin, he’s not keen on meeting any of those. Their language is convoluted and they curse, which is a no-go to his delicate ears. Taemin would rather meet some orcas and trout.

In the evenings, he talks to himself a lot. It draws in countless mer creatures who want to listen, but it’s mostly talk about how mean the shrimps are so they swim off. „Can’t help ya, buddy. They hate on us, too.“ 

Going to merman school, he mostly had decent ratings on tests. He specialized in education about icebergs and oceanic plankton.

For as long as he can think, Taemin has been attracted by music. He’s a born water dancer, and the merfolk of his village really respect him for it. Every time there is a festival, he’s invited to show a choreography. 

He envies humans because they have such a huge variety of instruments, and air really does help with spreading the tone of them. Underwater, it needs much deeper, stronger noise to create music that spreads wide enough at all. That’s why he often makes his own instruments with any material he can find. He’s happy tinkering in his little reef hut, and he looks forward to winter.
