Other Worlds, Other Gods

finished "other worlds, other gods" a '71 short story collection focusing on religion in science fiction. lots of it is real pulpy, with only the slightest hints of new wave shining through (mostly via john brunner), but its some good pulp. not a long or heavy read, only a day or two.

most of the stories were from the late 50s and early 60s, with a few from the 40s and late 60s. highlights include lee suttons soul mate, john brunners the vitanuls, anthony bouchers the quest for saint aquin, and damon knights shall the dust praise thee. 

i would recommend it with the caveat that theres nothing super weird, unfortunately (which would be my main criticism). it mostly stuck to christianity (primarily catholicism!) and pastiches of such, with a few jewish cameos and one of hinduism and buddhism each. no alien religions, really. weirdest one was definitely soul mate. nothing ubik-level, lol.

side-note if any of my followers is more learned in hinduism: id be curious about your reading of the vitanuls; im not sure how accurate of a representation it is, being written by a brit, but it seems decent enough? i have very little knowledge of the religion, though, and am supremely unconfident saying that.

do you think the hj affair rumors are true? im conflicted on whether i believe them or not.

i personally don't think they are!! i mean take this with a grain of salt cuz i don't know these people personally so idk what's going on in their lives but like hugh and deb both put out statements saying that it was an amicable divorce and that at the end they were more like roommates than partners and so i think it makes more sense to believe in what they say happened as opposed to unknown sources from tabloids and gossip magazines. even if there was something going on during the period while he was married, these situations aren't always black and white in a lot of cases couples can be separated for years leading up to the actual divorce. again, in the end these are complete strangers that were speculating about but i just think it makes the most sense ESP considering sutton and hugh aren't even together (according to actual people close to hugh). idk there have been cheating rumours about hugh and every single female (and male) costar he's had i just think this is us weekly recycling another story for attention

I’m still on the Sherlock Holmes thing and I just. I love in Elementary how frequently the person driving the plot is just like one of the Most famous people from musicals. Episode about bees? Sutton Foster. Lucy Liu’s Watson’s back story? Jeremy Jordan. Holmes used to write letters to Laura Benanti! Vinnie Jones from Galavant is in it! How does Sutton feel about RBY? :o how has their relationship as host and mind dweller changed with time?

ah, the very thing i intend to explore more in-depth!! in broad strokes, sutton did NOT want a squip and was absolutely determined to circumvent her at every turn from the get go--but the more lee displayed the capacity to be not just cooperative but helpful, respectful, friendly even, the less they see her as an extension of the sci-fi plague theyre trying to deal with and the more they see her as an individual--an entity who, if nothing else, they can start to consider an ally--maybe even someone who's wound up in the same boat as them--and eventually, maybe even a well-regarded partner in crime!

it certainly confused things for sutton that lee appeared in the form of somebody they were fond of from several years ago (hence, why sutton has taken to calling her 'Lee')--but the more squip lee develops, the more she grows visually distinct

there are CERTAINLY some bumps along the road, but ultimately, as is their fate, the two really warm up to each other!

There's so many comics. Reading Not Brand Echh got me curious about all of them, not just the superhero ones. I'm not reading many of them, but I am reading about them (which i realize is slightly different). But i feek like my hyperfixation hasn't drifted away from comics and superheroes yet, but it may have broadened to include comics more generally. I mean... there's only so many times you can see references to popeye, dick tracy, snoopy, etc before you start wanting to look up comics and learn about stuff. But on the plus side: I think Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Marie Severin, Tom Sutton and more deserve respect for making their humour comic parody every aspect of comics, not just their own stuff. It makes it way more fun (and more interesting too!).

It’s the End of the World (for Kyle)

A month after Kyle Richards’ White Party, the People Magazine article broke about Kyle and Mauricio Umansky was separating after 27 years of marriage.

The worst part of this episode was seeing and hearing how the news had affected Kyle’s daughters.

While it was hell on earth for Kyle who thought it was the end of the world, the rest of the women tried to make sense of the shocking news.

Dorit Kemsley and PK who probably were the closest to Kyle and Mauricio in this group, had no idea things between them were that bad.

The producers added that Dorit and Kyle hadn’t spoken since December, and it might have to do something with Dorit’s comment on WWHL.

She felt like Morgan Wade had gotten between her and Kyle, and the closer they got, the further Kyle got from Dorit.

Speaking of Morgan, Crystal Kung Minkoff’s husband, Rob Minkoff, suggested that Morgan could’ve been the one who leaked the story to People Magazine!

Sutton Stracke on the other hand, felt vindicated. She was once again being very vocal about her suspicions.

And she was mad that she had gotten chastised for asking questions about her marriage.

Well, in all honesty, the way Sutton had asked her questions didn’t exactly create a safe space for Kyle to pour her heart out and be vulnerable in.

Kyle appears to be more and more distant from the group. She wasn’t as close with them as she’s usually been.

It seemed at the end that the only one she felt comfortable talking about this with, was Erika Girardi.

Erika is probably the one who really understands what Kyle might go through. She showed up to comfort Kyle and calm down her anxiety.

It was very sweet of Kyle to ask Erika to perform at her White Party. Denise Richards was making snide comments nonstop about watching Erika lip-singing.

There were parts of this episode that was just quintessentially RHOBH too.

Kyle had stolen Lisa Vanderpump’s over the top party planner, Kevin Lee and she was impersonating Vanderpump.

Would she come back next season?!

okay so i need u to know when i say this i'm 100% not trying to be shady anon but tbh i think you using this reasoning as 'proof he's guilty' is generally due to the rise of social media and influencers. because our generation has become obsessed with getting online and 'clearing the air' we view silence as an omission of guilt. i don't think hugh's staying silent thinking to himself "oh shit they caught me" there are probably several different reasons behind it - he already put an official statement out regarding the divorce when it first happened and his management team/pr people have probably instructed him to stay silent whether or not any affair took place. also, he's a 56 year old man who's mainly uses social media to promote his work. nasty rumours come out about a list celebs constantly but the thing is we have grown up alongside cancel culture and lived in a society where addressing every little thing head on has become what's expected of celebrities, where as that wasn't the norm up until the early 2010s. even the most heinous rumours would go unaddressed- which is a large part of the reason u can look at past celebrity gossip and find out someone who's still famous did something crazy problematic in the past and it's not common knowledge cuz it was never brought to the media's forefront.

Oooh that’s so interesting that RBY and Lee were different characters at some point! Which one was Sutton’s squip or did Sutton not exist at that point? Were there any significant differences about them before you merged them into one character?

oh lee was suttons squip first!! rby was an au version of lee in which she was not beholden to a human host and was instead a more chaotic & scrappy digital entity, doing whatever it takes for her to survive (and i liked her design so much it stuck in my head forever)

id say they were most different design-wise, that and lee prime was much more cynical and dry than rby turned out to be, but in the end i liked the thought of them both being an exploration of the same squip character! so here we are
