The United States government is doubling down on its commitment to safeguarding Ukrainian culture amid the Eastern European country’s ongoing war with Russia.
On September 19, U.S. officials announced a new $1 million grant to the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), which will use the funds to “support the next phase of a multiyear project to help Ukraine improve risk reduction and emergency management of its cultural heritage,” according to a statement. The grant is part of the U.S.’s $10.5 million commitment to Ukraine under the Ukraine Cultural Heritage Response Initiative, which was established in 2023 by the U.S. Department of State.
“Ukraine is fighting the Russian invasion on all fronts,” says Maksym Kovalenko, the Ukrainian consul general in Naples, Italy, in the statement. “The cultural front is no exception. The support of the international community provides us with an ability to respond to the challenges of war and, despite everything, to develop a long-term strategy for the preservation and restoration of our cultural heritage.”
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, UNESCO has verified damage to 438 Ukrainian cultural sites, including religious sites, buildings of historical or artistic interest, museums, monuments, libraries, and an archive. The agency previously said it was “gravely concerned” over threats to Ukrainian heritage.
Russian troops have removed “entire truckloads of artworks and historical artifacts” from Ukrainian museums, supposedly for “safekeeping,” reports Vitaly Shevchenko for BBC News. In some museums in Russian-occupied Ukraine, Russian troops have removed exhibitions and replaced them with propaganda glorifying the war.
In a 2023 essay for Smithsonian magazine, Smithsonian Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large Richard Kurin wrote, “These attacks are not just random, nor do they represent collateral damage. Rather, they suggest a targeted attack on Ukrainian history, culture and identity, a means toward [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s ends—the destruction is a deliberate attempt to obliterate Ukrainian history and culture.”
Hundreds of professionals associated with Ukrainian and international organizations—among them the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative—have been fighting the threat to Ukrainian heritage for the past two years. In some cases, cultural heritage workers have been able to smuggle important works of art out of Ukraine and display them elsewhere. Last year, for example, five precious artworks rescued from Kyiv’s Khanenko Museum went on view at the Louvre in Paris.
The $1 million grant—the second-largest awarded under the Ukraine Cultural Heritage Response Initiative to date—arrives on the heels of newly imposed emergency import restrictions aimed at fighting the illegal removal and sale of Ukrainian cultural artifacts. Those restrictions, which limit the types of Ukrainian cultural property that can enter the U.S., will be in place until 2029.
In addition to offering funds for cultural rescue initiatives, the U.S. announced more than $8 billion in military assistance to Ukraine on September 26, the day that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the White House. In total, Congress has appropriated $175 billion in aid to Ukraine, per the Council on Foreign Relations.
“Ukrainians are fighting for the human rights and freedoms we all cherish,” says Lee Satterfield, the U.S.’s acting under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs, in the statement. “And they are also fighting, in a very real sense, for their identity as a distinct and unique culture, which Vladimir Putin has denied—a denial he has used to falsely justify his brutal, full-scale invasion. [The $1 million] funding will support the heroic efforts of Ukrainians to protect and preserve their cultural heritage.”

Angela Satterfield, 23 (USA 1990)
Like so many others, Angela Satterfield was killed by the “choice” of legal abortion. Her death was completely unnecessary and avoidable.
Angela was only 23 years old when she underwent a legal abortion. She already had a 15-month-old daughter at home.
According to a family member, someone had originally attempted to charge Angela $1500 for an abortion, but she found out that the abortion would be cheaper at Statewide Clinic in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On October 15, 1990, she underwent the abortion and was sent home with no warning of the danger she was in.
The original abortionist and the Statewide abortion facility both failed to give her the medical pre-op examination she needed. A proper examination and an ultrasound would have easily detected that Angela had an ectopic pregnancy.
Even though Angela urgently needed medical care, Statewide didn’t provide it. That night, she bled to death from the ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Her death certificate noted the internal hemorrhage due to the undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy, but her autopsy report documented the failure of the abortionist to diagnose Angela’s dangerous condition.
Angela’s baby had no way to survive, but there was absolutely no reason that Angela had to die too. The recklessness and negligence of the Statewide abortion facility killed her, leaving her husband Timothy Lee to raise their 15-month-old daughter alone.
Just like all the others with ectopic pregnancies who were killed by an abortionist’s negligence, Angela’s death was excluded from CDC statistics on maternal deaths from legal abortion— even though, as Dr. Wendy Recant, the director of surgical pathology at Michael Reese Hospital, wrote after another death caused by the same circumstances, “It would be the grossest kind of malpractice to miss one ectopic pregnancy and one woman went home and bled to death”.

![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/395512163c55cde81ca85e3908fc611e/fc23bb033b87223c-6f/s540x810/f0d39bb2295b0d522bd15ee088c4d9efcdcd6ad8.webp)
This week in Washington, D.C., U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed around 10,000 participants from higher education institutions, foreign governments, and other industry stakeholders to the 75th NAFSA: National Association of International Educators’ conference, one of the world’s largest conferences focused on international education. Speaking via video to the opening plenary, Secretary Blinken emphasized the United States' enduring commitment to international education and the direct link between education and foreign policy. In addition to the Secretary, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), along with officials from the Bureaus of Consular Affairs (CA), the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), and Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES), as well as other U.S. government agencies including the Departments of Commerce, Education, and Homeland Security, demonstrated the United States' strengthened commitment to international education and enhanced coordination across the Biden Administration. On Thursday, June 1, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Lee Satterfield met with stakeholders supporting Americans studying abroad through the Department's IDEAS Program at the joint EducationUSA and Fulbright pavilion. The Assistant Secretary reiterated the U.S. commitment to enabling future leaders to develop skills for solving shared global challenges, such as economic security, food security, global health, and climate change. At the conference, Department officials highlighted U.S. exchanges and resources, including the Fulbright Program, the Gilman Scholarship Program, and EducationUSA, and discussed topics such as international education as part of the forthcoming U.S. National Export Strategy. They also discussed recruiting international students to community colleges, the value of STEM and other fields of study in addressing shared global challenges, international student mobility, the Department's continued prioritization of processing student visas, studying abroad safely, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the United States. As emphasized in the Joint Statement of Principles in Support of International Education, the active exchange of students, researchers, scholars, and educators, as well as broader international education efforts between the U.S. and other countries, strengthen relationships among current and future leaders, creating new opportunities to enhance economic opportunity and foster full participation across societies. The Biden Administration is taking a coordinated government approach to expand access to international education opportunities for Americans across the socioeconomic spectrum and attract the best international talent to study at U.S. colleges and universities, ensuring that the United States remains the premier global study destination. Ezzard Mack Charles (July 7, 1921 – May 28, 1975) was an American professional boxer and former World Heavyweight Champion.
Charles defeated numerous Hall of Fame fighters in three different weight classes. He retired with a record of 93 wins, 25 losses and 1 draw.
Career
He was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, but is commonly thought of as a Cincinnatian. Charles graduated from Woodward High School in Cincinnati where he was already becoming a well-known fighter. Known as "The Cincinnati Cobra", Charles fought many notable opponents in both the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, eventually winning the World Championship in the latter. Although he never won the Light Heavyweight title, The Ring has rated him as the greatest light heavyweight of all time.
Career beginnings and military service
Charles started his career as a featherweight in the amateurs, where he had a record of 42–0. In 1938, he won the Diamond Belt Middleweight Championship. He followed this up in 1939 by winning the Chicago Golden Gloves tournament of champions. He won the national AAU Middleweight Championship in 1939. He turned pro in 1940, knocking out Melody Johnson in the 4th round. Charles won all of his first 15 fights before being defeated by veteran Ken Overlin. Victories over future Hall of Famers Teddy Yarosz and the much avoided Charley Burley had started to solidify Charles as a top contender in the middleweight division. However, he served in the U.S. military during World War II and was unable to fight professionally in 1945.
World heavyweight champion
He returned to boxing after the war as a light heavyweight, picking up many notable wins over leading light heavyweights, as well as heavyweight contenders Archie Moore, Jimmy Bivins, Lloyd Marshall and Elmer Ray. Shortly after his knock-out of Moore in their third and final meeting, tragedy struck. Charles fought a young contender named Sam Baroudi, knocking him out in Round 10. Baroudi died of the injuries he sustained in this bout. Charles was so devastated he almost gave up fighting. Charles was unable to secure a title shot at light heavyweight and moved up to heavyweight. After knocking out Joe Baksi and Johnny Haynes, Charles won the vacant National Boxing Association Heavyweight title when he outpointed Jersey Joe Walcott over 15 rounds on June 22, 1949. The following year, he outpointed his idol and former World Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis to become the recognized Lineal Champion. Successful defenses against Walcott, Lee Oma and Joey Maxim would follow.
Charles vs. Marciano
In 1951, Charles fought Walcott a third time and lost the title by knockout in the seventh round. Charles lost a controversial decision in their fourth and final bout. If Charles had won this fight, he would have become the first man in history to regain the heavyweight championship. Remaining a top contender with wins over Rex Layne, Tommy Harrison and Coley Wallace, Charles knocked out Bob Satterfield in an eliminator bout for the right to challenge Heavyweight Champion Rocky Marciano. His two stirring battles with Marciano are regarded as ring classics. In the first bout, held in June 1954, he valiantly took Marciano the distance, going down on points in a vintage heavyweight bout. Charles is the only man ever to last the full 15-round distance against Marciano. A number of fans and boxing writers felt that Charles deserved the decision. In their September rematch, Charles landed a severe blow that literally split Marciano's nose in half. Marciano's cornermen were unable to stop the bleeding and the referee almost halted the contest until Marciano rallied with an 8th-round knockout.
Later career
Financial problems forced Charles to continue fighting, losing 13 of his final 23 fights (He held a record of 83 wins, 12 losses and 1 draws before financial problems became a factor in his career). He retired with a record of 93-25-1 (52 KOs).
Charles was also a respected double bass player who played with some of the jazz greats in the 1940s and 1950s at such notable places as Birdland (jazz composer George Russell wrote the famous tune "Ezz-Thetic" in his honor). He was very close with Rocky Marciano and a neighbor and friend of Muhammad Ali when they both lived on 85th Street in Chicago. Charles also starred in one motion picture: Mau Mau Drums, an independent (and unreleased) jungle-adventure film shot in and around Cincinnati in 1960 by filmmaker Earl Schwieterman.
Death
In 1968, Charles was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The disease affected Charles' legs and eventually left him completely disabled. A fund raiser was held to assist Charles and many of his former opponents spoke on his behalf. Rocky Marciano in particular called Charles the bravest man he ever fought. The former boxer spent his last days in a nursing home. A chilling 1973 commercial showed Charles in his wheelchair horribly disabled by the disease. Charles died on May 28, 1975, in Chicago.
Legacy
In 1976, Cincinnati honored Charles by changing the name of Lincoln Park Drive to Ezzard Charles Drive. This was the street of his residence during the height of his career.
He was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
In 2002, Charles was ranked #13 on The Ring magazine's list of the 80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years.
In 2006, Ezzard Charles was named the 11th greatest fighter of all time by the IBRO (International Boxing Research Organisation).
The "Cincinnati Cobra" was a master boxer of extraordinary skill and ability. He had speed, agility, fast hands and excellent footwork. Charles possessed a masterful jab and was a superb combination puncher. He was at his peak as a light-heavyweight. His record is quite impressive. Against top rate opposition like Archie Moore, Charley Burley, Lloyd Marshall, Jimmy Bivins, and Joey Maxim he was an impressive 16-2 combined. Despite being a natural light-heavy he won the heavyweight title and made 9 successful title defenses. Nearly 25% of voters had Charles in the top 10. Half of the voters had him in the top 15. Two thirds of voters had him inside the top 20.
In 2007, ESPN online ranks Ezzard Charles as the 27th greatest boxer of all time, ahead of such notable fighters as Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes and Jake LaMotta.
In 2009, Boxing magazine listed Ezzard Charles as the greatest Light Heavyweight fighter ever, ahead of the likes of Archie Moore, Bob Foster, Michael Spinks and Gene Tunney.
Prominent boxing historian Bert Sugar listed Charles as the 7th greatest Heavyweight of all time.
