6/26/18 - Halifax Nova Scotia (HALIF)
64th Temple in the Church
3rd Temple in Canada
1st Temple in Nova Scotia
Announcement: 7 May 1998 Groundbreaking and Site Dedication: 12 October 1998 by Jay E. Jensen Public Open House: 4–7 November 1999 Dedication: 14 November 1999 by Gordon B. Hinckley
The Halifax Nova Scotia Temple is one of a pair of temples that were dedicated on the same day (the other is the Regina Saskatchewan Temple) - the first time in Church history that this had happened. The Halifax temple was originally scheduled to be dedicated the day before, but mechanical trouble with President Hinckley’s airplane caused his arrival in Halifax to be delayed. The temple district is roughly the size of the entire western United States.

20 Tourist Destinations in Canada by Ashish Dewan
1. Vancouver, British Columbia
Vancouver is so beautiful that it’s become a hit with filmmakers: so much so that the city has the nickname Hollywood North. Among the most popular attractions here are Stanley Park, Granville Island and the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
2. Whistler, British Columbia
Whistler is North America’s largest ski resort and was the host mountain resort for the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver. Summer activities here include hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and golf.
3. Quebec City, Quebec
Founded in 1608 but first settled in 1535, Quebec City is one of North America’s oldest European settlements. Attractions here include the historic Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the Château Frontenac and, in winter, the Ice Hotel.
4. Montreal, Quebec
If you can see only one Canadian city in 2017, Montreal should be at the top of your list. Home to attractions such as the Notre-Dame Basilica and Old Montreal, Canada’s second most populous city celebrates its 375th anniversary this year.
5. Toronto, Ontario
The joke may be that Toronto is New York City run by the Swiss, but the city on the shores of Lake Ontario is a vibrant, multicultural city with fascinating museums, stunning architecture, beaches and a great restaurant scene. The best-known attraction is the CN Tower, which you can now dangle off of.
6. Canmore, Alberta
Canmore is one of the gateways to Banff National Park but is also a destination in its own right. The town in the Canadian Rockies is an outdoor lover’s paradise and also hosts a variety of festivals and the Canmore Highland Games during the year.
7. Kelowna, British Columbia
Located on Okanagan Lake, Kelowna is in the heart of the Okanagan wine country. Outdoor pursuits such as boating, hiking and golf are popular in summer while the nearby ski resorts attract visitors in winter.
8. Niagara Falls, Ontario
A popular honeymoon destination, Niagara Falls is home to attractions such as a butterfly conservatory that is one of the largest in North America. The main attraction though is the set of three waterfalls the city is named after.
9. Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
Cape Breton Island is home to a unique style of fiddling, a rich Scottish Gaelic heritage and the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. The island is also very scenic, with attractions like the Cabot Trail and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
10. Stratford, Ontario
Like its namesake in England, Stratford is located on the banks of a river named Avon. The city is famous for its Shakespeare festival, its music festivals and for being the hometown of Justin Bieber.
11. Calgary, Alberta
The oil industry has made Calgary a prosperous and multicultural city. However, its location on the edge of the prairies means it’s still cowboy country, and the Calgary Stampede is the city’s most famous – and raucous – event.
12. Ottawa
Canada’s capital is also its most educated city and home to most of the country’s national museums. The main attraction here is Parliament Hill, and in winter, a must-do is to go skating on the Rideau Canal.
13. Edmonton, Alberta
Edmonton has a vast park system with hiking and biking trails and is one of the cities where you may be able to spot the Northern Lights on a clear winter’s night. Other attractions include the TELUS World of Science, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village and North America’s largest shopping mall.
14. Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg hosts some great festivals during the year and is also a popular destination for sports lovers. The city’s architecture and museums are among its greatest attractions, with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights the ultimate showcase for both these aspects.
15. Mississauga, Ontario
Mississauga is really a suburb of Toronto, and its long shoreline makes it perfect for waterfront dining and shopping. With plenty of amusement parks and festivals, Mississauga is especially popular for family vacations.
16. Victoria, British Columbia
Victoria’s location on Vancouver Island, its many stunning beaches and its Mediterranean climate make it one of Canada’s best boating destinations. Historic architecture, the Royal BC Museum and Butchart Gardens are some of the city’s other attractions.
17. London, Ontario
London is located on the banks of the Thames River – the one in Ontario. Festivals like the Sunfest world music festival and the London Rib-Fest as well as attractions like Springbank Park and the Fanshawe Pioneer Village draw many visitors in summer.
18. Hamilton, Ontario
Hamilton has been used as a filming location for movies as diverse as Hairspray and the Resident Evil franchise. The city’s attractions are diverse too and include Dundurn Castle, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, the Bruce Trail, African Lion Safari and more than 100 waterfalls.
19. Richmond, British Columbia
Richmond is located just south of Vancouver, at the mouth of the Fraser River. With more than half of Richmond’s population of Asian descent, this is a fantastic destination for lovers of Asian cuisine. The city is also home to great shopping and the impressive International Buddhist Temple.
20. Halifax, Nova Scotia
As a busy port city, many of Halifax’s attractions are related to the sea. They include North America’s oldest lighthouse as well as the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. Citadel Hill with Fort George is one of the city’s most well-known historic sites.

It’s a secret no more, an interview with Chad Peck of Kestrels.
I got a package from Darla records a few months ago and in it were a few cds but the one I was drawn to was one by a band from Halifax, Nova Scotia named Kestrels entitled Dream or Don’t Dream. I had never heard of the band before even though this was their fourth record. It seemed like leader/main songwriter Chad Peck had really put his best foot forward on this batch of songs. There’s definitely touchstones as I initially heard echoes of bands like Dinosaur Jr (whose J. Macis plays some guitar one on of the songs on here), Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. Peck and crew, however, were able to mold that ball of swirling noise into something truly beautiful. Songs like “Grey and Blue,” “A Way Out” and “It’s a Secret” will definitely tickle that part of your brain that love noisy, melodic rock music. Also, though recorded at several different studios, the record sounds remarkably cohesive (probably thanks, in part, to the stellar mixing job of the master John Agnello). I threw some questions Chad Peck’s was and he was more than happy to give me the skinny on the band name, the recording process and crashing with Ash’s Tim Wheeler. Read on, dear readers.
Tell us about the beginnings of the band. When did it form?
The band formed in 2008. It was initially a totally different lineup and a somewhat different sound, but some of the same inspirations – a move away from angular post-punk and into something more melodic and layered. We recorded the first 7” in my old apartment and started playing live after the single came out. That was our big marketing idea at the time – release something first, then start playing live. I guess I thought it would show extreme confidence or something: “Yeah, we believe in this music enough to press 300 7”s of a completely unknown band”. We released the first full length in 2009, and it’s just kept growing since then.
How did you come up with the band name? One of the members of the original lineup picked it. He was a big nature guy. They’re pretty cute birds, as it turns out.
After 2016’s S/T record did you do much touring?
Almost none. The lineup that made that record kind of fizzled. We’d been at it pretty steadily for quite a few years at that point and we were running out of steam. It’s too bad – that record is pretty good.
The S/T record from 2016
So did you really start this album while hanging on Tim Wheeler’s couch? Was it a nice couch?
I guess it was more of a love seat, but yes, I wrote the first real batch of songs on Tim’s couch! He’s a good friend of mine and was a total hero to me when I was growing up in rural Nova Scotia. I’ve stayed at his various places in New York lots over the years. He’s the nicest guy. He played on our second full length. I was thinking about re-recording that song since I know so much more about making records now.
How did you hook up with Darla Records?
I made a solo record as We Need Secrets and it came out on a Darla distributed label called Saint Marie Records. I was looking for distribution for my own label (Noyes Records), and Wyatt from Saint Marie hooked me up with James. I initially sent James the Kestrels record to see if he would help me pitch it to some Japanese labels, but he loved it and he wanted Darla to put it out. It’s been an excellent relationship and I’m honoured to be on the label.
It looks like the new record was recorded at several studios, was that in purpose or did it just work out that way?
It just worked out that way. I was starting over with a new drummer who was living in Chicago at the time and almost as a lark I booked at day at Electrical Audio. It was a test run to see how we would work together and if I even wanted to make records anymore. It went well and I started writing more songs to finish the record. I had hoped to finish it at Sonelab with Justin Pizzoferrato and we got really close, but I decided to cut a few songs in favour of a few new ones I had written, and we did a final tracking date at a studio in Halifax called the Sonic Temple. I have a studio at my house where I recorded the bass, guitar, synths, and vocals.
Dream or Don’t Dream
How did you get J. Mascis to add guitar to a song? Was it simply just asking him?
Justin from Sonelab has engineered all of the reunion era Dinosaur Jr records and the Mascis solo records. While we were tracking he said “Maybe J will play on this song” and asked if he was interested. It’s definitely one of the coolest things that’s happened to me.
How has the response been the Dream or Don’t Dream? It’s been great. Darla definitely opened a lot of doors for us. A recent review called it a masterpiece, which was nice. I always like the comparisons people make – “it sounds exactly like _______!”, but the blank will be a band I’ve never heard of.
How have you been passing your time since COVID has ground things to a halt? Writing/recording more songs?
Yeah, I’ve been picking away at some new stuff and things I didn’t finish during the album tracking. I want to get the next one finished by March so it’s not another 4 years between records. I’ve been collecting guitar pedals and recording gear for that purpose. Other than that, just lots of running and lots of beaches.
In the flesh- Kestrels
What are your top 10 desert island discs? Oh boy…as of today:
Ash – 1977
My Bloody Valentine – Loveless
Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
Elliott Smith – Figure 8
Phoebe Bridgers – Stranger in the Alps
Snail Mail - Lush
Lilys – Eccsame the Photon Band
Neko Case – The Worse Things Get
Dinosaur Jr – Hand It Over
Doug Mason – Invisible Star
What are some bands from your neck of the woods that we should know about?
My two favourites are Norma MacDonald and Doug Mason.
What’s next for the band?
New music! It would be nice to play live at some point. I just started getting the final pieces for a beautiful new pedalboard.
BONUS QUESTION: What’s one song you wish you’d written? “Hammond Song” by The Roches.

GREATER LONDON (News agency) - Kingfisher (KGF.L ), Europe's greatest property remodeling retail store, intends to finalize 60 B&Q establishments in Britain over the next pair of years at a price from 350 thousand extra pounds ($ 517 thousand), stating that has too many purchase the measurements from the market. You will certainly additionally have to consider your landscape zone, which merely informs you which vegetations will certainly be actually sturdy in your geographic region. A groundskeeper waters 2 landscaped breasts at the Erotic Backyard and Teahouse on February 6, 2015 in Mae Rim, Thailand. The New Umbra Yard: Generating a Rich Sanctuary in the Grow older of Environment Change through Ken Druse ~ Available currently by means of Amazon.com ~ # 1 Crowning achievement in Color Gardening on Amazon.com! They are actually affordable to get and the lasting advantages for your yard are going to soon outweigh this tiny initial assets. Absolutely nothing makes a large recalling yard scenery type, as this platform does. She has actually been a member of the Repair Committee of The Yard Club of Virginia, and provided on the Store of American Gardens Board of The Garden Nightclub. These are all extremely versatile (will certainly survive on reduced or backyard water) and blossom in tone or even component color. Therefore, that has actually started looking into brand-new markets (including UFC occasions) for the Yard and attracting brand new events/performers to the Discussion forum (which simply held 69 occasions in 2015). Considering that a lot of websites present a massive selection of various building plans, you need to have perfect-life-style.info the ability to locate the specific design of shed that you wish to find in your garden. Enjō-ji Temple in Nara Prefecture is an example of a wonderland yard of the overdue Heian Duration.
In Canada, the Ontario towns from Don Mills (right now integrated right into the Metropolitan area of Toronto) as well as Walkerville are, in part, landscape metropolitan areas, and also the Montreal suburban area from Mount Royal The historic Townsite of Powell Stream, British Columbia 18 as well as the Hydrostone district of Halifax, Nova Scotia are actually realized as National Historic Sites of Canada 19 built on the Garden City Movement. Perhaps I was actually only quick-tempered, or even failed to intend to invest all my garden budget plan in the yard facility purchasing flats of blossoms and hedges that were actually expensive and would take years to increased, yet I had a ton of area to perform something with.
The principal function of this particular landscape is to offer youngsters an opportunity to find out points as well as adventure vegetations along with all their detects. So far in September, our company have actually viewed same dining establishment purchases build up coming from August levels at Olive Landscape. Robinson proposed planting garden vegetations in untamed settings as well as watching indigenous types and exotic one disperse and also mingle. Such attention to particular may be found at spots like Midori Falls in Kenroku-en Garden in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, as the rocks at the falls's foundation were actually changed at different times by 6 different daimyōs. You could make a starter water landscape along with a fountain that is actually informal or even formal, reared or in the ground. Most of the landscape layout schools use a total set obviously components to the trainee on remittance from their fees. The core component of this Modernist web site merely pair of blocks from the White Residence is actually a sizable, superficial pool that Oehme as well as van Sweden completely transformed in to a water yard.
I would certainly like right now launch Doctor 'Connor, Head of state and also CEO of the Madison Square Yard Business. The backyard can use a wide range of other nutritious plants and also if they concern maturity all at once the selection will definitely make the yard a lot more enjoyable as well as extra fun.

MORNING STEW #8
Morning Stew time again!
Yesterday was National Vietnam Veterans Day. Opted to write about my neighbor Homero “John” Lopez. Now 83, came to the U.S. early in life as an immigrant. Joined the Marines. Fought in Vietnam. Rose to the rank of Major.
Seemed appropriate to skip my usual blog format and talk about John on Vietnam Veterans Day.
Which means I have a jumble of notes for today’s blog. I am going to go through them in the order they appear in my notes. Information generally not related.
The Regal theater reopened this past week. Finally! It took a beating during Irma. Roof off, insides floating around, etc. Took a long time to repair.
Can’t wait to go!
The Key West Citizen daily carries page excerpts from William Hackley’s diary in its History Section. Thursday took readers back to 1831. Hackley played piquet with the Judge.
Piquet? Never heard of it.
Did a little digging. Piquet was a 16th century trick taking card game. Very popular. Two players, 32 cards. A piquet deck was 7 to Ace.
Piquet’s popularity dropped off with World War I. Replaced by gin rummy, a game most of us do know.
I wrote about Batman a couple of the days ago. It was his 80th birthday. He first appeared in a comic book in 1939.
Comic books cost a dime back then. I remember. I purchased a lot of them. My generation was first educated by comic books.
An auction of one of the first Batman comic books was sold in 2010. In pristine condition. Sold for $1,075,500.
Friday night found me at the Chart Room.
As I walked in, a lovely lady came up to me. Holding Irma and Me in hand. Her name, Debbie. With husband, Eric. From Rochester, N.Y.
We had met last year at the Chart Room. Debbie purchased Irma and Me and carried it to Key West to have me sign it.
Chatted a while with them. They have 2 grown children and 2 grandchildren.
They are here for a week. Hope to run into them again. Good people.
Met Sandi. Visiting Key West for a week. From Nova Scotia. First time in Key West.
Sandi is here with a girl friend. The girl friend likes Key West’s live theater and was at a show. Sandi prefers the bars and so we met in the Chart Room.
Sandi has an interesting background. A career in the military. Followed by working for the Halifax Police Department afterwards in an administrative position.
I was scheduled to have dinner with Ted. Turns out he knew Sandi. They had met the evening before at Smilin’ Tuna.
Ted is a retired Court Clerk from Madison County, New York. Spent his entire legal career as a Court Clerk. An important job. As I have written before, clerks are the brains behind the judges.
Ted now lives in Cazenovia. A beautiful hamlet on Lake Cazenovia, Also in Madison County.
Ted and I had dinner at Hot Tin Roof. Enjoyable conversation. An enjoyable evening.
Ted left this morning to return to Cazenovia. God willing, he will be back next year. He spends one month a year in Key West. Stays at Banyan Court.
I came across a quote by Erasmus friday. Desiderius Erasmus. “Man’s mind is so formed that it is far more susceptible to falsehood than to truth.”
Made me think of Trump’s solid 35 percent followers. Those who hang on his every word. Believe everything he says. Their Pied Pipper. He leads, they follow.
Erasmus was also known as Erasmus of Rotterdam. His field of expertise religious and Renaissance philosophy. A great scholar.
The Middle Ages died off in the mid to late 1400’s. The Renaissance replaced it. Erasmus one of it leaders.
Erasmus found much wanting with the Catholic Church. Not much different today from those times. He called for reformation of its abuses.
The following an act of sheer stupidity.
The Key West Police reported some one or more persons vandalized 12 cars. By spray painting on them. The vehicles were parked in the New Town and Mid Town areas.
Saturday a strange one for me. Normally, I enjoy being out and about saturday evenings. Was not that way yesterday.
Mid afternoon got a call from Guy de Boer. Come over and have cocktails with me.
I was on my way. Guy’s home palatial. Sits on the Riviera Canal. Its best, the trees and shrubbery between the house and canal.
We enjoyed a couple of drinks together.
Guy is in the process of acquiring a radio station. Wanted to know if I would do a show for him.
Of course. My plate is getting full again. However, I absolutely love doing the shows.
Guy was the first person to give me a shot at doing radio. Ten years ago. It as instantaneous love between me and radio.
Guy taught me a few things. Jenna Stauffer even more. Jenna was working with the station. Though young, she was educated and had previous experience in radio and TV. She became my teacher.
Left Guy’s trying to decide whether to go home or out. I opted to go home. Barbara left me with a refrigerator of all kind of good food she had prepared.
I enjoyed a meal of satisfying foods. Beans and greens followed by a delicious meat loaf.
While consuming this food from the gods, I watched the Texas Tech/Gonzaga game. The winner would go to the Final Four. Gonzaga the #1 seed, Texas Tech #3.
What a game! Texas Tech won 75-69. It will be Texas Tech’s first Final Four in the 94 years of its basketball program.
Texas Tech was decidedly the better team in the second half. Though with a minute to go, only 2 points separated the teams.
Texas Tech’s defense primarily responsible for the win. Caused 16 Gonzaga turnovers. In addition, Texas Tech scored when it had to. Especially with 3’s.
I was fed and happy. Had enjoyed one of the best basketball games ever. Decided to remain home the rest of the evening and watch old movies. Which is what I did.
The Beach Boys are coming to Key West. Thursday, April 4. They will be performing at Sunset Green.
The Beach Boys big time stars back when. An iconic American rock group.
There will be some gray hair watching. Musical fans of yesterday. Listening and watching a group from their time. The Beach Boys will return them to yesteryear.
The diseases of my youth have returned. Measles first. Now, the mumps.
There were no vaccines when I was a kid. You got immunized by getting the disease and living. Some died. Even for my children, all vaccines were not yet available. I recall my children and I getting the chicken pox. A pox on the pox! Not at the same time, of course.
Temple University is experiencing a sudden mumps epidemic. One hundred eight cases so far. Thousands of students voluntarily being vaccinated. Wednesday alone, 2,285. Even if previously vaccinated, getting booster shots.
Today a combination vaccine given on 2 separate occasions over a period of time has been known to take care of measles, mumps, and rubella. Some of the Temple infected never received the super dooper shot.
The shot is 3 in 1. Excellent in protecting against measles and rubella. Only “really good” against mumps.
A long blog. Sorry. Catch up time.
Enjoy your Sunday!

Sports make us fit, fight stress and give us an overall feeling of well-being. We play sports because they’re fun, and because our brains tell us to! Scientists have found that sports help our minds cope with future conflicts and unforeseen circumstances, as well as develop our social skills. That’s why both kids and young animals engage in so much playtime. Modern sports have strict rules and regulations, and they’ve become a multimillion dollar enterprise for grownups, but at heart they’re still an adult version of goofing around. People have been tossing balls around for centuries, and today we’ll learn how these activities went from simple child’s play to national pastimes.
#1 Basketball Basketball came into being as a necessity, rather than by evolving from an existing game. The inventor, Dr. James Naismith, had to come up with an indoor sport capable of replacing the outdoor activities at the YMCA Training School in 1891, and he had to do it in a hurry. Being a sports coach and having a great interest in physical activities and athletic psychology, Dr. Naismith drew inspiration from his childhood memories and came up with a sport that requires the accuracy and dexterity of football or lacrosse but can be played on a small indoor court. Basketball had 13 rules and looked quite different back then. Players weren’t allowed to dribble or run with the ball in any way, while the actual baskets had bottoms and were made out of wood. It instantly caught on around the country, and Dr. Naismith was able to see his creation become part of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
#2 Soccer / Football Here’s a subject of endless debate! Why do Americans call it soccer while most of the world knows it as football? First, Americans already had a sport called football, and second, because of the British. Up until the 19th century, before strict rules and regulations were imposed, people were playing all sorts of games involving a ball, and almost all of them were called football. Then, in 1863, the Football Association was established and a standardized form of the game was created. The term “soccer” derives from the word “association,” plus the suffix “-er.” Association football, or soccer for short, was the official name of the sport until it became more popular with the British lower class and changed its name back to football. Its true beginnings are shrouded in mystery, as people all across the globe were playing a variation of the game in one form or another. Evidence can be traced back as far as 1000 BC, but in Europe the Celts were the first to introduce it. Over the centuries the game was banned by several English rulers, including Edward II, Edward IV and Oliver Cromwell, for being a catalyst of “evil behavior.” That sounds absurd, but football back then was very different, and much more violent, from what it is today. Teams made of entire towns and villages competed to bring an inflatable pig’s bladder to markers within a town’s square by any means possible. Any means.
#3 Sumo The popular Japanese national sport of sumo can trace its roots back 2000 years. It began more as a ceremony than a sport, a form of celebration to appease the gods and generate a good rice harvest. Its strong ties with the Shinto religion filled sumo with symbols and rituals that usually go unnoticed by the average Western viewer. These rituals include stomping the feet right before the beginning of the match in order to fend off evil spirits, and salt being thrown by the wrestlers to purify the ring and prevent injury. The canopy over the arena resembles the roof of a Shinto temple, while the four tassels hanging at each corner represent the four seasons (green is spring, red is summer, white is autumn and black is winter). By the coming of the Nara and Heian periods (794-1192 AD) in Japan, sumo began to be performed at the imperial court in front of the Emperor. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the sport began to evolve to resemble present day sumo. That’s when the official 48 wrestling moves were established and the circle ring was introduced. It’s also the time when sumo went from being a ceremony to an organized and professional championship.
#4 Rugby The historical origins of rugby are very similar to that of soccer. However, sources indicate that the Chinese were playing a similar type of sport almost 2000 years ago, and so did the Greeks and Romans. But the year when rugby branched off from other football-like pastimes in Britain and became a separate sport was 1823. That’s when a young school boy named William Webb Ellis, studying in the town of Rugby, England, first picked up the ball in his hands and started running with it. This only became a written rule years later, in 1845. By 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was created and rules were made standard nationwide. The modern RFU named their rugby world cup the William Webb Ellis Trophy, in memory of the game’s “discoverer.” The American version of football has its origins in a combination of both rugby and soccer.
#5 Hockey Nothing screams Canada more than hockey, but historical evidence dating back to the 1600s shows Dutch people playing a sort of golf-like sport on ice. In the Americas, northern Indians were engaging in an activity similar to present day lacrosse, but on frozen ponds and lakes. Hockey isn’t the invention of a sole individual or a small group of people, but rather an accumulation of local pastimes from both the Old World and the New. Hockey as we know it originated in Canada in Nova Scotia to be exact, in the small town of Windsor around 1800. Kids had modified the game of hurling (a cross between soccer, baseball and lacrosse) and made it playable on ice. Soldiers stationed in Windsor liked the game and took it with them to Halifax, and from there it spread throughout the entire country. By 1875, ice hurley became known as ice hockey and was exhibited in Montreal on March 3rd. Two years later, firm rules were put in place. Many people acclaimed the new sport, while others were appalled by its violence.
#6 Curling Curling is also known as the Roaring Game, not because of its fans or pace but because of the noise made by the 44 pound stone sliding on the ice. Obviously, curling has its origins in the northern hemisphere, mainly Scotland. The earliest stones discovered date back to 1511 around the towns of Stirling and Perth. Parish ministers from 18th century Scotland make mention of curling as one of the most anticipated and respected pastimes amongst themselves and their parishes. Around 1830, curling arrived in the United States and spread like wildfire from Michigan to Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. Today over one million people curl, and 90% of them live in Canada.
#7 Baseball If we could trace back baseball’s origins to whenever the first round-ish object was thrown by one man and hit with a club by another, we would go back as far as the dawn of mankind. Evidence of a specific game played with bats and balls can be found in ancient Egypt, dating back more than 2000 years. A more recent ancestry of the sport can be found in Europe, from where it most certainly immigrated to the United States. Baseball bears a significant resemblance to English pastimes such as rounders and cricket. We also know of a similar game played by French monks around the 1330s, and the sport of oina played in Romania. And in the United States, similar games like town ball, stool ball and old cat are known to have been enjoyed by children as early as the 1700s. The first ever mention of baseball in an official document was found in a dusty courthouse archive in Massachusetts. It’s from the small town of Pittsfield and dates to 1791. The document was a bylaw prohibiting people from playing “Wicket, Cricket, Football, Baseball, Batball or Cats and Fives” within 80 yards of the new Meeting Hall to prevent broken windows. Baseball as we know it evolved from many of these games during the middle of the 18th century on America’s east coast.
#8 Boxing Historically speaking, men have always been punching each other. And other men have always gathered around to cheer them on. Boxing could easily be called the most natural sport known to man. The earliest form of organized boxing can be found on Mesopotamian clay tablets dating back 7000 years. The Greeks and Romans were also famous for their love of combat sports. Homer mentions it in the Iliad, and boxing was introduced to the ancient Olympics in 688 BC. Back then the fighters wore nothing but leather straps on their knuckles and forearms, and matches could be fatal. For unknown reasons, boxing disappears from references and historical documents and only resurfaces in England in the late 17th century. James Figg, born in 1684, became the first boxing champion in recorded history. It’s reported that he only lost one fight in his entire career, and in 1992 he was introduced into the Hall of Fame as the Father of Boxing. However, real credit must be given to Jack Boughtonis, as he’s the man who introduced the first rules to the sport in 1743, making boxing significantly less dangerous while still retaining its fundamental violent appeal.
#9 Tennis Nobody really knows how far back tennis goes. Some frail evidence suggests ancient Egypt or Greece, but stronger facts point to 10th century France. When French monks were playing the game of jeu de paume (game of the hand) over a rope or against monastery walls, they would shout out “tenez” (to take) every time one of them served the ball. By the 13th century the game became very popular among the French, who built over 1800 indoor courts throughout the country. When played indoors, je de paume looked a lot like present day squash, but players were facing each other and not standing side by side. It became so famous that King Louis IV and even the Pope tried to ban it, but to no avail. From France, the game crossed the English Channel and became an instant hit with the British as well. Before the discovery of rubber, tennis balls were made out of wool, wrapped in string or leather and were struck with bare hands. By the 1500s the first racket was made out of wood and sheep guts. Since the balls had little spring in them, courts were quite small compared to what we’re used to. All of this changed in 1850, when Charles Goodyear discovered vulcanized rubber and the game finally moved its venue outside. In 1874 Major Walter C. Wingfield established the rules of tennis (very similar to present day ones) and the sport began to go international. The first Wimbledon tournament was held in 1877, with women joining in 1884.
#10 Golf Early forms of golf were played by the Romans and the Chinese as far back as 100 BC. The Dutch, the Belgians and the French were also known for engaging in different activities involving “sticks and balls.” In fact, it’s possible they were the ones who introduced the game to the British Isles via trade. The origins of the term “golf” can be found in the Scots language in different variations such as goff, goif and gowfe, which meant “to strike.” All of these terms find their roots in the Dutch word “kolven,” meaning “club.” The term “golf” has been in use since at least 1457, when King James II of Scotland banned it because it was a too big of a distraction for his soldiers. Golf as we know it today was developed by the Scottish. They dug the first hole, and it was in Edinburgh in 1744 where all 13 rules were written, most of which are still in use today.
