Welp, I’ve done it now. ㅡ.ㅡ;;

Long story short, I ran across a random post--sponsored, I think, about The King: Eternal Monarch, since this blog branches off my main one (a Tumblr focusing primarily on Jdrama and tokusatsu, i.e. an alter ego of mine). 

I’m a sucker for Kim Eun Sook’s drama, but TKEM flew under my radar with all that’s going on with quarantine orders and working remotely in my area. That, and the fact that my family all have some strong polarizing opinions about the drama had me running for the hills--how could one drama create such conflict, I don’t even know.

Well, OK. @melted-caramel​ uploaded a post (see here) with a bunch of Kim Go Eun and Lee Min Ho gifs, and immediately my hopeless Kdrama fangirl sensors perked up. I’m always a sucker for Kim Go Eun, and even just looking at the gifs had me excited for some intense scenes, even though I only had a vague idea of what the drama was actually about.

.....Fast forward the wee hours of the morning. I have work in an hour, but I’m wrecked.

Granted, it took me a couple times to just pause, think, and then play back certain scenes because, yes, the story is complicated, but it’s not haphazardly put together like some would say: we as the audience are constantly confused at the passage of time in the drama, but we can’t view the sequence of events as linear, since time travel messes everything up. Kim Eun Sook has proven herself to be a hit scriptwriter with runaway works under her belt, and I think that she’s doing this deliberately for the sake of telling a good story and not subjecting us fans to sheer torment and agony. 

TL;DR: I am now hooked on TKEM. It is a good show and I will fight you if you say otherwise.

Made a whole thread on Twitter today about the parallels I see between The King Eternal Monarch and Outlander, as I was psyched to find a TV writer who has the same thought as me...

I know Tumblr is OL’s stomping ground, so at the risk of OL fans murdering me, read on...

Watched TKEM with the husband (who also was bribed to watch OL) & he thought I was crazy to draw the comparison. Love TKEM, surprisingly even more than OL. Thematically though, there are the time travel, the which world do I belong, the “King” title (JAMMF as King of Men), the committed eternal love, the threat & pain of separation, the question about changing fate...

What surprised me was that elusive chemistry of the leads. Outlander’s claim to fame is the Jamie-Claire love story. Since watching OL in 2015, for the last 5 yrs I thought Sam & Caitriona set the chemistry gold standard. But came Lee Min-ho & Kim Go-eun and their Lee Gon & Jeong Tae-eul blew JC out of the water. A tall order given #TKEM is a foreign language series for me.

You can’t watch the way LGxJTE gaze at each other, hug, hold hands (their acting with their hands is in a class of their own) and not feel their intensity or intimacy.

If you’ve watched Outlander (especially S1), you’ll know the pedestal I put LGxJTE on. They hit me so hard with the feels without the benefit of the love scenes Outlander was privileged to have (don’t get me wrong the OL scenes were beautiful & not gratuitous).

LG&JTE’s intimacy is artiscally delivered through the details of their interactions that production invested screen time to show, the beautiful cinematography that took complete advantage of the perfect height difference between LMH & KGE, and the dedication of LMH & KGE to showing that soulmate love.

Hi b! I hope all is well. I have a TKEM language question. You'd written about how Jeong Tae Eul speak banmal with each other. Is this true even when they are with other people? A lot of their dialogue is usually just between the two of them, but there are instances where there are people nearby, such as the meeting with PM Koo in front of the KU Building or in the helicopter with Secretary Mo and Jo Yeong. Do they drop the banmal then? Would PM Koo have gotten a clue as to their relationship just from the way JTE responded to Gon? Per Netflix she said "OK" after Gon said "Let's go." Thanks!

Yup, Gon and JTE speak banmal to each other no matter who is around them :) In the scene in front of the KU Building for instance, Gon says "가자" ("Gaja" = Let's go) which is very informal speech. And JTE answers with "어" ("Eo" = Okay / Sure / Alright), which basically means "Yes" but she wouldn't have answered that if she had used formal speech.

Same in the following scene in the helicopter, they keep using banmal in front of Yeong and Secretary Mo.

So yeah, to answer your question, PM Koo knows something's up just by listening to how they talk to each other. That's why she's so pissed.

Basically all throughout the series, people surrounding them can see how close Tae-Eul and Gon are just based on the way they talk to each other. And this is made especially obvious by the fact that Gon is King and no one, absolutely noone should dare address him the way JTE does. She's the exception :)
