Google commemorates the 116th birthday of American designer Altina 'Tina' Schinasi, renowned for her iconic 'cat-eye' eyeglass frame,

through its August 4 Doodle. Born in 1907 in Manhattan, New York, to immigrant parents, Schinasi's artistic journey began in the streets of Manhattan and eventually led her to the vibrant art scene in Paris, where she pursued her passion for painting after completing high school.

During her time as a window dresser for various stores on Fifth Avenue in New York City, she refined her artistic skills at The Art Students League and had the privilege of working with artistic giants like Salvador Dalí and George Grosz, who influenced her creative vision.

The idea for the "cat-eye" eyeglass frame came to her during her work as a window display designer. She noticed that women's eyeglasses were limited to round frames with uninspiring designs, prompting her to create a fresh and unique option for women. Inspired by the captivating shape of Harlequin masks worn during the Carnevale festival in Venice, Italy, she envisioned eyeglass frames with pointed edges to accentuate and flatter the wearer's face.

Despite facing multiple rejections from major manufacturers who considered her design too unconventional, a local shop owner recognized its potential and signed an exclusive agreement for six months. The Harlequin eyeglasses quickly gained popularity and became a fashion sensation among women in the US during the late 1930s and 1940s.

Her invention brought her significant recognition, including the prestigious Lord & Taylor American Design Award in 1939, and acknowledgment from renowned publications like Vogue and Life.

Schinasi also ventured into filmmaking, producing a documentary titled "George Grosz' Interregnum" about her former teacher, artist George Grosz. The film earned an Academy Award nomination and won first place at the Venice Film Festival in 1960.

As the years passed, she continued exploring new artistic pursuits. In her later years, she wrote her memoir, "The Road I Have Traveled," offering insight into her extraordinary life journey. Additionally, she volunteered as an art therapist, using her creative talents to help others.

Altina Schinasi's cat-eye design remains influential in fashion accessory trends worldwide, nearly a century after its inception. Google celebrates her as a visionary and pays tribute to her enduring legacy.

I think the thing that's made me the person that I am is that in 2010, when I first saw Les Misérables in Åbo Svenska Teater, the part of my soul that's responsible for personal tastes and preferences got separated from the rest of me. It was then replaced by the tastes and preferences of the Swedish-speaking Finnish lady 35 years older than myself that was sitting next to me in that matinee. Ever since, I've been the way I am.

Of course, it takes two souls for a mixup like this to happen... so I wonder how the lady who got my previous taste in things is doing nowadays. How did her friends react when she told them that actually, she hates Sommaren är kort and won't be coming to Tomas Ledin's concert this summer, or any summer going forward? I feel a little sorry for her; I hope she wasn't disowned by her entire community afterwards or anything.

Not sorry enough to ever give her her soul back, of course. But a little bit.

Name: Ledin Peori

Birth date: June 7th (same day as his sister, yes 😄!)

Age year: +3 (aka 3 years older than Acid, the protagonist)

Nationality: South Korean (German immigrant to SK)

Appearance: albino pale, orange-brown eyes, slightly long red hair (usually neatly combed), front bangs always covers most of his eyes, VEEEEEEEEEEERY handsome (I can't draw handsome or pretty characters but trust me on this), 166cm height

Race/species: German human, magician (i.e. wizard)

Family: mother (yang-in), father (magician), Leina Peori (little sister)

Backstory - He was born in Germany but his parents had been going back and forth between Germany and South Korea for about 5 years before he was born. So, at a few months old, he moved permanently to South Korea with his parents and started living there. As mentioned in Leina's bio, their parents were there until Leina turned 12, i.e. until Ledin turned 15. After their parents went missing, he started working part-time jobs. After turning 18, he got an internship-type opportunity at a magician's hospital in South Korea, letting him become a doctor-in-training, which had always been his dream. Currently, he lives with Leina and his best friend, Akihiko. Akihiko and Ledin works as a future-magic-cop and to-be-doctor respectively to make ends meet while Leina studies to become a botanist.

Abilities:

-Pyrokinesis (it's called 'fire-based magic' in my world tho. He can conjure fire but it extinguishes when he loses focus unless the fire was set on a flammable material. There's still gonna be marks left tho. Basically, for example, if he burns someone, the fire would immediately disappear when he loses focus but the burn would remain. Mainly, he just controls already existing flames.)

-nothing else really? But he's a doc so that's something :D

Bonus! Ledin Peori ends up with Ellyn Wildens in the future. (Just in case someone ships him with his bsf like my friend did 😭)

which song do you think Omar chose and which one would you like him to choose for allsang pa skansen? :)

Right now I can only think of ”Uti vår hage” since he was so specific that he only had one song he wanted. And I want it to be that one mainly bc I want to see him explain his choice. Flustered Omar is adorable. He also likes Carola, but he did that at Liseberg.

And the song I want him to sing is Talk, if he gets to do two songs then Red Light as his second song. His live vocals are beautiful. It’s an amazing promo opportunity with 20% of Swedes watching the broadcast of the shows. The line up at his show with Molly Sanden, Tomas Ledin, Omar and Peg Parnevik will secure a very large audience of all ages. I usually don’t encourage people to be early at shows, but for this one I make an exception since it would be lovely to have Omar fans close to the stage. Molly and Peg fans will also be in front.

Om Glee utspelade sig i Sverige

Så, det utspelar sig på en gymnasieskola i nån småstad. Småstaden har ingen estet-linje för att ”sånt behöver vi inte här”, så en passionerad lärare gör en körgrupp. Mestadels av eleverna i kören går samhäll eller natur, men det finns också några humanistelever (för jag behöver hum-representation i svensk media). Också för att skämta om mig själv, minst en av hum-eleverna måste gå inrikting kultur och alla kommer va typ ”vadå?? Så du är inte inne på språk, är inte det typ allt hum är?” och de är typ ”nej jag går kultur, vi lär oss om idéhistoria och samtida kulturuttryck… nej det är inte flum…” För skojs skull kan det också vara en elev som ingen är säker på vilken linje de går och ingen vågar fråga

Iallafall, låtar som de 100% kommer sjunga i svenska glee:

- Inget stoppar oss nu av BlackJack

- Fångad av en stormvind av Carola

- Faktiskt de har en hel vecka med Carolatema

- De har en vecka där de bara sjunger Björn Rosenströms låtar och alla tar hans mest olämpliga låtar

- De har 100% en vecka med mellotema. Eller flera veckor

- Diggiloo Diggiley är ett måste att de sjunger

- Julavsnitt där de sjunger sånger som ”vår julskinka har rymt” och ”mer jul” och ”tänd ett ljus”

- Markoolio tema och once again hamnar de trubbel för de har hans mest olämpliga låtar
