Good morning, low-battery pals!
Today I found an awesome kickstarter for a product called the BrailleDoodle. It is a double-sided pad designed to teach Braille on one side. The other side is a blank grid of magnetic balls that can be lifted with the magnetic stylus, allowing any shape of tactile art or writing to be made. It's like a touchable Etch-a-Sketch! They have guides for the blank side as well, so you can have a little help too.
They have a special going on for the first ten days of the campaign, with each BrailleDoodle being $70. The project is already fully funded! Here is the link if you would like to explore!
(I am not related to this project in any way, just sharing a cool thing I found.)
I hope you all have a wonderful day! Don't forget to wash your water bottle!

I too am now going to learn braille in spite of anon. Thank you anon for giving me the motivation of spite to learn braille.
some people think i learned braille for Cool Points but i actually learned it bc my medicine holder has the days printed in braille and i forget to take my medication a lot. i didnt feel like turning on a light one night just to see my medication so i learned braille out of spite. now everytime i go anywhere i have to read the braille signs and i have seen “woman” misspelled as “noman” SEVERAL times.

ok someone please correct me if i'm wrong but am i weird for thinking those 'audiobooks don't count as reading' posts are ableist as fuck????
#ramble#my first thought was like: how is this even a debate what about blind people. not every book comes in braille but MOST have an audiobook#or dyslexic people#you still enjoyed the book!! you still absorbed it!!! you got EXACTLY the same thing as people who read the words!!!#how does it not count????#i guess you miss out on the 'learning new vocab' you get through seeing the words but also#i don't really do audiobooks but i do a lot of podcasts esp fiction podcasts#and i have ABSOLUTELY picked up new stuff from there that helps with my writing#someone please explain how this is even an argument of COURSE it counts????#idk in my opinion finishing a book means 'i put the words in my brain and i thought about them and i enjoyed a story'#not 'i held a stack of paper in my hands for a bit'#i'm v lucky that i do have time to sit and read. and whenever i commute anywhere it's public transport so i CAN bring a book with me#but if i didn't have the free time or had to drive for hours everywhere i would be STOKED to still get to enjoy books#it's been REALLY bothering me lmao idk why i feel so strongly#for some reason it's giving the same energy as like. being told you can't take a comic or manga from the library bc it's not a 'real' book#of course it's a real book it's a story somebody wrote down#i can see this spiralling into 'if you have a kindle you aren't reading'. you have to sniff the paper. feel the papercuts

Actually, I hope Jiaoqiu stays blind (at least for a couple years in our time) and just bullies the Xianzhou alliance into inventing disability aids and treating disabled people better
#hsr#honkai star rail#hsr spoilers#jiaoqiu#i want to make it very clear that this is not a Jiaoqiu hate post#i am simply a disabled gal (chronic pain + shit eyesight + neurodivergent) who wants more disabled characters in the game#and with blindness in particular- that rant from the sanctus medicus lady really stuck with me#as did the treatment of the kid#and curing blindness irl is absolutely something that would be great and i think its fine to explore in game too#but its frustrating to watch the game act like thats the only way blind people can live their lives without constant suffering#especially in such a futuristic setting#like if you got space travel i think you can also make cains and railings and audio messages and braille#and I'm just hoping thats an intentional flaw of the xianzhou and not just writers ableism leaking through#with hsr's recent track record of disabled characters though i am learning towards believing its probably the former#I'm just saying that if mail delivering robots are a regular thing i dont see why other forms of robot assistants couldn't

so I'm going blind everyone should know that about me by now and because of that I know braille and back when I wasn't home schooled (like middle school and freshmen year) I would write vulgar notes to my bullies fully in braille but written with a pen so they'd have to manually translate it and I never got in trouble because even if the kids translated it the principal wasn't gonna fact check it because I made em long
i also wrote a bunch of swear words on a poster when I was in a mental hospital (we were making it because we were the first batch of kids in that building) and they never checked it and I'm pretty sure its still up and I'm very happy about that
i also taught plenty of other kids at that hospital how to write swear words in braille
The moral of the story is don't give a god of chaos a secret language
#braille#visually impaired#mental hospital#i am chaos#swear words#fuck that one nurse who told me I'm not allowed to talk bout furries because“it can trigger other patients”so I stabbed myself with a spork#if you wanna learn braille curse words hmu bbg/j#its 2 am#I miss you past patient gremlin child

our current uni project is to train an Ayy-Eye™ that can read braille and it's actually really fun min-maxing the parameters to increase the accuracy by 0.1% it feels like i'm playing a puzzle or trying to solve a rubiks cube the most contrived way possible
#qrevo.txt#LOOK AT MY BOY he's learning braille omg i'm soo proud of him <3 *pointing at an accuracy-by-epoch graph*#is this how it feels to be a parent#tbh i'm very happy that i'm having fun coding again!! last year was fucking intense and i'm finally recovering from the burnout#(also i censored the Forbidden Word this time i have learned my lesson)

People who are snobbish about audiobooks are so weird. We've both experienced the same words, gone through the same journeys with the same characters, had the same opportunities to connect with a piece of art, but because someone used their ears instead of their eyes it's somehow all invalid? Truly bizarre.
#Sunny Life#and then ofc there's the baked in ableism like are you saying that a blind person has never read a book before?#or does it only count when they've read it in braille?#not to speak of ppl with learning disabilities or other issues that make it difficult for them to read books (like brainfog and fatigue)#anyways if you're weird and gatekeep-y about how people experience art I'm coming to your house and stealing your kneecaps

Braille book experiment no. 2: the problem with using, as one’s practice text, a work in which the author regularly shortens words like “with” and “the” to “wif” and “da” is that due to Braille’s contractions of common word and letter groupings, this actually makes the text longer.
but being able to fit 17 characters to a row with 19 rows a page that puts me at 329 characters per page, including spaces. If we guesstimate a 5k text being at about 30,000 letters including spaces, that would make 5k about a 90 page book— keeping in mind that pages cannot be double sided and are thicker than print pages because the paper is heavier and also because there are raised dots on one side.
If I cut a line I could add page numbers to the bottom, but that would put me down to 312 characters per page. Or I could manually add page numbers to the corner with a stylus. But then I’d have to buy a stylus 🤔
(Image description: two Braille pages containing most of the first paragraph of My Immortal)
#also I haven’t used a stylus in years and would have to learn everything backwards again#Braille typewriter only goes forward#braille#books#bookbinding#works in progress#op#my immortal
