college au clegan fic is currently collecting as much dust as my other two fics but i wanted to post part of it to see if anyone might enjoy it. i’ve brainstormed a little about the finer details but for the most part all i’ve got is what i managed to get down before inspiration, that fickle mistress, up and left me again. come home, honey, my need for hyper specific tropes and motifs misses you.

“John knows he’s watching a little too closely as Gale puts on his fancy lip balm, his mouth parted in a pout like it’s lipstick. It’s different to how every other guy he knows uses regular chapstick, how John does it, lips pursed and no finesse. Gale reminds him of a pretty woman getting ready for a date, sat in front of a vanity in a softly lit boudoir or something. It’s such a silly thought, but John is full of those.

He leans back on Gale’s neatly made bed in his tidy room, he sees the other man arranging the few products lined up on his Ikea desk, face shining and smooth from what he’d been applying before John so rudely killed his self-care vibe, and the light from Gale’s various lamps on his desk and bedside tables make him look like something John shouldn’t be allowed to witness. It feels a little too personal, maybe, like he’s intruding on a quiet moment Gale had set aside for himself, but Gale has invited him into his space and seems to be happy to let John laze on his bed and mess up his pillow arrangement, despite his obvious staring problem.”

realizing I have a weakness for the "give Heavily Traumatized Guy a surrogate daughter/little sister and they each learn to grow and heal with the help of the other" trope

#which in itself is not always healthy and i don't want to lean into the whole 'child has to become a therapist for their parent' negativity #but if it's played with healthy boundaries im all over it 😭#or at the very least healthy boundaries are developed along the way #we've got skye and evyr #both were alone and she both gives him conpany and a reason to live #while he teaches her survival tricks and helps protect her #sahota and noor would be a much needed found family for each other #nabi and mel are the sibling variant but she helps him with emotional recovery and stopping blaming himself #and he gives her more insight into the real world since jin tries to shelter her #meta #calico is befuddled #tropes #this originates from when i was a kid #i was the Oldest Child so my bedtime daydreams were becoming an adpotive little sister to obi wan kenobi and helping him on missions skfbjfk

Since everyone is posting Rooks, wanted to show off mine:

Yarina "Found In a Crypt, Raised In a Cave, Who'd Have Thought That Human Connection Is Something I Crave" Ingellvar, who is apparently the protagonist in a story about a sheltered introvert forced to interact with people, only to suddenly find out that this shit is actually pretty easy.

#the thing is #while I do not think that in most cases they come from a place of intellectual honesty #I do have to agree with comments about there being almost no real aggressive or confrontational options in Rook's default lines #it does hurt the the experience I think #those are very rarely the options I want to choose but their existence tends to add meaning to the 'nice' ones #so that's a noteable weakness of veilguard's writing imo #however at the same time I find that it is a good thing for me personally #since it ended up giving the bottom option lines - which tended to be the aggressive and self-serving ones for Hawke and Inquisitor #a lot more of 'calmly confident and to the point' vibe #which really made Yarina's personality click for me #Before starting the game I wanted to really lean into the Mourn Watch angle with her #and play someone who spent more of their life among the dead than the living and so #while competent and well-meaning #has all the social skills and graces of a potato #but it very quickly became clear that with the lines available to Rook this isn't really an option #so instead emerged Yarina who is very new to the world outside of Grand Necropolis #but whom her sheltered upbringing robbed not of social graces #but instead of ANY form social anxiety #and who - upon venturing out into the world of Thedas had discovered that it is very big and scary yes #but also that she has the fattest hog and the biggest horns around #and that apparently its possible to be confident and assertive without being an asshole #so I am having a lot of fun with her right now #dragon age #dragon age veilguard #dragon age rook #qunari

#like. im not very fond of the trials but at the very least i would like to have people to lean on???#but no. can't even have that #i wish people cared about me beyond just tolerating me. i wish i had someone who would seek me out instead of the othee way around #i'm tired of reaching and reaching and reaching and making one (1) friend after all that effort #and then later having them drop me because they actually hated me the whole time and just didn't have the heart to tell me #i'm just a fucking shelter dog to these people. something to be pitied. something to adopt for social credit and then drop later #i don't even have many close online friends anymore #my old friend group fell apart #it's my fault i break everything i touch #it was just outside circumstances; life got too stressful for too many ppl- but my luck is so fucking godawful it affects people around me #people who hang out with me have tragedy after tragedy happen to them until they stop and then everything is fine again #because i'm just a fucking omen or something #cursed maybe. who knows #marin complains

In a classic example of ‘you never know what will break someone’s immersion’ every time I go to my island sanctuary in ff14 I have to bite down my annoyance that there is no shelter of any kind for the pastured animals. This only annoys me bc I grew up around farms and even the most basic of farms are going to have something for the animals to huddle in for inclement weather. Chances are most people don’t even notice this but ooooooooo it feels high key wrong to me. You let me pet and feed them now let me put a goddang roof over their heads!

#I kept waiting for each sanctuary level to give me pasture options but no. it’s just Like That #the fact that I’ve got tigers and sheep in the same enclosure doesn’t bother me tho #brain accepts that this is a limitation of game design #but no shelter? at the very least give them a lean-to or smth ffs #stop talking to yourself flight #ff14
