Nature Notes: Goblin Safety
If you live in an area infested with goblins, remember the following items and practices for protection.
Wear at least 2 articles of clothing inside out.
Keep a nail hanging on a string around your neck.
Keep a piece of silver in one pocket, preferably a coin.
Embroider the image of a wolf's heart on a shirt pocket over your own heart.
When travelling at night, especially, keep a lantern with green will o the wisp flame burning.
Learn at least one unsolvable riddle to tell them, as a distraction, you can then flee to the safety of an oak tree, that is at least 200 years old, or a human made dwelling.
Remember, goblins do not always attack people, but its best to be prepared.
Read up on your fae identification, so that you do not mistake bogies, brownies, or swamp sprites for goblins.
For further info, contact me at exactly 3 am central standard time on the astral plane, through lucid dreaming.

What to Do If a Snake Bites Your Dog
Late summer and fall bring hunters and dogs to the field, and more chances for an encounter with a venomous snake. Here’s your bite plan.
by T. Edward Nickens
We’re entering a time of year when sporting dogs and venomous snakes are most likely to be in each other’s face, says Dr. Chris Jenkins, a biologist and CEO of the Orianne Society, a science-based reptile and amphibian conservation group. Encounters with “piz’nous serpents,” as one old fellow once described them to me, can take place any time of the year in the South, Jenkins says, but late summer and fall is all about the overlap of time and space. Hunting dogs are in the woods and swamps. Rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, and coral snakes are still active. When the latter takes offense at the former, dog owners need to have a plan. Jenkins is an avid hunter who’s dealt with his own snakebit dog, so he comes to the issue with some unfortunate serpent cred...

After learning about a lot of those stories of people that just went missing I have compiled a list of how to not go missing and never be found or end up dead.
Stay on the trail! Really do not step off the trail even if it is just a couple feet to get a better look at something. People have died within feet of busy trails.
Respect the safety barrier and signs! Do not go past the safety barrier to get a clearer picture that is how people fall to their deaths.
Listen to the weather prediction and cancel your trip or reschedule it to a better time when the weather is permitting. Seriously flash floods kill so many people when they decide it is just a little rain.
If the locals say it is dangerous and to not do it, then you should not do it.
Do not leave the group. Don't go ahead or stay behind and catch up later. Remember the buddy system and don't let your buddy wonder off to die of exposure.
#wilderness safety#safety#seriously people follow the rules that are posted at places#so many people die because they bypassed or broke the rules that are meant to protect them

Choosing the Right Outdoor Supplies for Your Adventures
Embarking on an outdoor adventure is an exhilarating experience, but it's essential to equip yourself with the right gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Whether you're planning a weekend camping trip, a multi-day hike, or a leisurely day in the wilderness, selecting the appropriate outdoor supplies is crucial. Here are some tips to help you choose the right gear for your next outdoor escapade:
Assess Your Needs: Before purchasing any outdoor supplies, take some time to assess your specific needs and the activities you'll be engaging in. Consider factors such as the duration of your trip, the terrain you'll be traversing, and the weather conditions you might encounter.
Quality Over Price: While it can be tempting to opt for cheaper options, investing in high-quality outdoor gear is essential for safety and comfort. Look for reputable brands known for their durability and performance, even if it means spending a bit more upfront.
Versatility: Choose gear that offers versatility and can adapt to various situations. For example, multi-purpose tools, such as a multi-tool or a versatile backpack, can be invaluable in a variety of outdoor scenarios.
Consider Weight and Portability: When selecting outdoor supplies, prioritize lightweight and portable options, especially if you'll be hiking or backpacking long distances. Opt for compact and collapsible gear that won't weigh you down but still offers functionality and durability.
Durability: Outdoor adventures can be tough on gear, so prioritize durability when making your selections. Look for materials that can withstand wear and tear, as well as harsh weather conditions, to ensure your gear lasts for years to come.
Research and Reviews: Before making a purchase, do thorough research and read reviews from other outdoor enthusiasts. Hearing about real-world experiences with different products can provide valuable insights into their performance and reliability.
Test Before You Go: Whenever possible, test out your gear before heading into the wilderness. Set up your tent in the backyard, take your hiking boots for a short hike, or practice using your portable stove in a controlled environment. This will help familiarize yourself with your gear and identify any potential issues before you're out in the field.
Safety First: Don't skimp on safety gear. Invest in high-quality essentials such as a reliable first-aid kit, navigation tools like a map and compass (or a GPS device), and appropriate clothing and footwear for the conditions you'll be facing.
By following these tips and carefully selecting the right outdoor supplies for your adventure, you can ensure a safe, comfortable, and memorable experience in the great outdoors. Happy trails!

6 Important Safety Tips for Camping in Wilderness
Camping in the wilderness is a popular hobby for a reason. It brings people closer to nature, provides endless relaxation, and is a way to connect with the great outdoors. For those who love to tent up and explore, there is no harm in getting to know some important safety tips to make the excursion as safe and enjoyable as possible. This guide has six bits of advice any camper can take on board, so keep reading to find out more.
Let People Know the Trip Agenda
The number one rule of going off for a wilderness trip is that you have to let someone else know where you’re going, how long you’ll be there, and when you’re supposed to be back home. By doing this, you ensure that somebody else is waiting to verify that you have returned safely. If something happens, there will be a person on the outside raising the alarm and it will be the difference between people looking for you if you run into trouble, or staying lost until it’s too late.
Learn the Risks of the Area
The second rule that can’t be ignored is to understand the risks of the camping area. The wilderness is beautiful, but there are natural predators out there too. Through actively learning the risks that surround you, it increases the likelihood of surviving them. You can learn, for instance, what the best way to deal with a bear confrontation is. Or, whether poisonous snakes are lurking about and all of the other animals or plants that will pose a threat to your safety. Having strategies for combatting these risks is essential, and you can only do this if you know what you might be facing.
Take Suitable Protection
For areas where there are going to be substantial threats, like mountain lions, for instance, it is advisable to take some form of protection. If you are taking a firearm, don’t forget to source enough ammunition from somewhere where it is available in bulk so there is no risk of running out. It is worth having this in a safe compartment of your hiking gear just in case the time comes when you have to use it.
Know What’s Safe to Forage
If you plan on foraging your food like a true hunter in the wild, ensure that you have a reliable list of what’s safe to consume and what isn’t. A camping trip that is cut short by an unexpected illness is definitely not something you want on the agenda, so don’t make this easy to avoid mistakes. There are so many books and online information that you can research everything easily before you head out there.
Be Fire Aware
Of course, if you do take food with you to cook it is also important to be safety aware with the campfire. Follow the advice and regulations, and ensure you have everything ticked off legally such as permits and the correct type of fuel too. Campers cooking causes so many wildfires, so don’t add to that statistic.
Take a First Aid Kit
Every camper needs a top quality first aid kit. Take all the medical basic essentials in an easy to access bag just in case you fall or become injured along the way. It’s also a good idea to get to know the basics of administering first aid as well so you can help yourself and anyone else that might need it.
Camping in the wilderness is a lot of fun, but every adventure has space for safety and awareness. Take all the essential items along with you every time you’re away from civilization, and ensure that at least one other person knows exactly where you’re going to be just in case.

Basic snake safety question I was wondering if you could help me with. I sometimes go pick up trash in a nearby nature area and a lot of the time I end up seeing snakes (mostly rat snakes). I want to be safe and give them their space but most of the advice I find is a generic and unhelpful recommendation to leave the area. I know it varies by situation but in general how much space do you think I should be giving these snakes if I want to continue picking up trash?
Well, I am going to assume that you live in the US or Canada, and so you're dealing with a north american rat snake.
My first piece of advice is to pick up trash with grabbers or a hook, if you believe you may disturb snakes when cleaning up.
I do not have a specific distance for you to keep away from a snake. Try to stay more than the body length of the snake away from the snake, if you do not want to get bit... some snakes may jump more than that, so maybe give the snake as much space as you can.
If you do not know how to identify all of the venomous snakes in your area, you should purchase a pocket ID guide to your area or state/province. If none exists, look through local field guides and lists and try your best to learn them.
If you have any other specific snake questions, feel free to write back.

Unicorns may not be real, but bears are!
Grand Teton National Park is a place where humans and wildlife share space. This means that everyone has to follow special rules and regulations to protect both the wildlife and you. Many high visitation areas are places that animals like bears frequent, such as lakeshores. Even areas where there are lots of people does not deter curious bears. Proper food storage in these areas is crucial for the future of our wildlife. Anything with a scent (food, empty coolers, sunscreen, lip balm, empty cans, etc.) or bags/backpacks can NEVER be left unattended. These items should be stored inside your vehicle (not in the bed of your truck), in a bear box, or attended to by someone. If you are in an area and a bear appears, grab your belongings and back away (don't run, don't leave bags). Take the few extra minutes it takes to properly store food and scented items. The future of our wildlife depends on it. Let's keep wildlife wild!
