Here we experience the first sigs of memory loss. This stage is most like a beautiful daydream. The glory of old age and recollection. The last of the great days.

Stage 2 - Pittor Pickgrown in Khatheinstersper
The second stage is the self realisation and awareness that something is wrong with a refusal to accept that. More effort is made to remember so memories can be more long form with a little more deterioration in quality. The overall personal mood is generally lower than the first stage and it a point before confusion starts setting in.

Here we are presented with some of the last coherent memories before confusion fully rolls in and the grey mists form and fade away. Finest moments have been remembered, the musical flow in places is more confused and tangled. As we progress some singular memories become more disturbed, isolated, broken and distant. These are the last embers of awareness before we enter the post awareness stages.

bpd culture is "say it isn't so" by layton and johnstone.
it's a very old song but i find myself listening to it when i'm having a breakdown regarding people leaving me or no longer loving me. it has a slow tune but expresses those deep fears and desperation. it's weirdly calming.
"people say that you found somebody new, and it won't be long before you leave me, say it isn't true
say that everything is still okay, that's all i want to know
and what they're saying, say it isn't so"

"jerkoff commute"
definitely one of the title ever. saw this video on early drum machines and saw the "chamberlin rhythmate" which was manufactured in the 1950s and was basically just this giant speaker with a bunch of drum loops. one of them caught my ear, so i made a song sampling that and "lullaby of the leaves" by layton & johnstone which you may recognize from the caretaker's "drifting in time misplaced". the two together made a really creepy environment that i built on with vague vocals and reverse guitar and such.
again don't know who to credit for the artwork, i found it on pinterest somewhere. if you know the artist then let me know

Marvel Star Tom Hiddleston is a well known Hollywood name, but few people know about his connection to Liverpool.
Loki actor Tom was born in Westminster, London, but he actually has historic Liverpool links, discovered by Find My Past researchers.
His connection to Liverpool began with this his 3x maternal great-grandparents, wealthy German cotton merchants who settled in Toxteth in the 1860s.
Tom’s 3x great grandfather, Friedrich Julius Jacob Hubert Servaes was born in Dusseldorf in June 1831. His wife, Johanne Helene Wilckens was born in Hamburg in 1838.
In the early 1850s, Freidrich, who preferred to go by Julius, travelled to Liverpool to work in the “merchants & bankers” firm, J. H. Schroder & Co.
Julius, the company’s chief clerk ran the Liverpool branch alongside Charles Pickering, a local man from the family of Pickering Brothers , who were well-known Liverpool corn merchants.
The pair proved to be incredibly successful and by the end of the decade, Schroder & Co was the fourth largest recipient of consignments of cotton in the city. As a result, Julius was made an associate partner in 1856.
Life in Liverpool
Census records reveal that by 1871, Julius and his wife, now going by Ellen, lived in a large house at Haymans Green in West Derby along with their four Liverpool born children, Ellen’s brother and five domestic servants. The full household included:
· Julius, then 39
· Ellen, 32 years old
· 10 year old son Francis
· 7 year old Julius Max (Tom’s X2 great grandfather)
· 5 year old Susan
· 2 year old Alfred,
· Ellen’s 23 year old brother Herman Wickens, a gem merchant
· The children’s German governess and nurse, 31 year old Margaret Spethman
· Scottish cook, 23 year old Catherine Johnston
· 28 year old Welsh servant, Mary Wade
· And two house maids from Cheshire, 24 year old Catherine Davies
· And 24 year old Annie Eaves
The grand houses in Haymans green were all home to accomplished wealthy individuals, with the Servaes’ neighbours including a surgeon, Sir Richard Glazebrook, from the well-known Liverpool Glazebrook family and Solicitor George Layton and his Australian Wife.
By 1881, the family were living at Holly Lea House on Aigburth Drive, Toxteth Park.
Three more children had been born to Julius and Ellen, eight-year-old Helen, five-year-old Tonie and three-year-old Julius Junior.
Eldest son Francis was studying medicine at the University of Liverpool and four live-in servants were also in the household.
This included the children’s nurse, Alice Clutterbuck from London, the family’s cook Caroline Williams, waitress Mary White, housemaid Lucy Akers and German sewing maid Pauline Mogler.
This appeared to be another affluent address with their neighbours including architects, merchants, solicitors and landowners.
As a well-respected figure in the community, Julius can be found frequently in local newspapers.
This includes marriage announcements for his children, reports on his involvement with the Liverpool Society of Friends of Foreigners in Distress, where he was appointed vice-chancellor in 1899, and even a brief mention of his death in 1902.
Julius and Ellen lived at Holly Lea until their deaths. Julius passed away in 1902 and Ellen in 1903, both dying at home. They can still be found at the address in 1901.
All of the children except for 25-year-old Tonie had left home and 70-year old-Julius was still working in international trade, with his occupation listed as “commission agent”.
The next generation
Tom’s X2 great grandfather, Julius Maximus Servaes (known as Max) was the second child of Julius and Ellen. He was born in Walton on the Hill in September 1863 and was baptised at St Saviour’s Church on September 17th.
Records reveal that like his father before him, he went on to become a successful merchant at the Liverpool Corn Exchange.
In April 1890 he married Constance Violet Coltart, the daughter of a rope manufacturer from Ruthin, Wales, in the parish of St Michael in the Hamlet, Toxteth.
The pair set up an elegant home at number 3 Parkfield Road, Toxteth Park complete with a live-in cook, nurse and housemaid.
The couple had at least five children;
· Nora, born in 1892
· Reginald Maxwell born in 1894 (Tom’s great grandfather)
· Phyllis, born in 1895
· Herbert, born in 1901
· Audrey Helena, born in 1904
Census records reveal that in 1901, the children were living with their aunt Susan Florence (Max’s younger sister) and her husband William Marshall (a wealthy chemical manufacturer) at Danehurst, Ullet Road, Toxteth Park.
By 1911 Max and Constance were still living at 3 Parkfield Road with 10-year-old Herbert and seven-year-old Audrey as well as the family cook, nursemaid and housekeeper.
By 1939, Max and Constance had moved to 22 Beechwood Road, Cressington before retiring to Contance’s hometown of Ruthin. Max died there in 1947 and Constance in 1952.
Reginald Maxwell Servaes (Tom’s great-grandfather) - born Toxteth park, July 25th 1893
Service records reveal Reginald joined the Royal Navy in 1906 and the 1911 census record shows him serving as a mid-shipman aboard HMS Indefatigable.
He became a sub-lieutenant in 1914 and steadily climbed through the ranks, serving in both world wars.
His naval records even provide insights into his character, describing him as: "A most efficient officer and lieutenant, an excellent leader with tact and good influence, pleasant personality.
‘Influential leader, good intelligence, much tact, powerful personality, physically fit, gentleman in the best sense of the word, very strongly seen as likely to do well in the highest ranks”.

Discussing: Everywhere at the End of Time (Part 2)
[ ⬅ Part 1 ] [ Masterpost ] [ Part 3 ➡ ]
⛔ CONTENT WARNING: Discussions of dementia, illness, death, age and aging, as well as spoilers for Everywhere at the End of Time and An Empty Bliss Beyond This World. ⛔
In part 1 of this series, I discussed what EATEOT is as a whole, who made it, and how I came across it. Now it’s time to share my thoughts and opinions on each stage. This post will be discussing stage 1.
STAGE 1:
“Here we experience the first signs of memory loss. This stage is most like a beautiful daydream. The glory of old age and recollection. The last of the great days.” - Description of Stage 1
STAGE 1 ARTWORK:
Tumblr media
"Beaten Frowns After" Ivan Seal, 2016
Stage 1’s artwork resembles a rolled group of paper, a scroll, book, magazine, or newspaper. You can tell, roughly, what it is, although it lacks detail. Personally, I interpreted it as a rolled sheet of music.
OFFICIAL VISUAL VIDEO
Leyland Kirby (The Caretaker) collaborated with WERIDCORE.TV to create a visual video for stage 1 and stage 2. The video is a walk-through of a hotel or cruise ship with various effects and old footage added on top of it.
THE ALBUM:
This is the first installment of EATEOT, released on September 22nd, 2016. It has a runtime of 41:18, with 12 tracks (6 on side A, 6 on side B). Arguably the most up-beat of all of the albums, it still contains heavy distortion, and the crackling record effect is prominent throughout. The effects become more prominent with each track. Some tracks trail off into echoes, others stop abruptly, feeling unfinished, interrupted, or sudden.
TRACK: A1 - It’s just a burning memory
Probably the most well-known piece from EATEOT, this piece is beautiful. It samples Al Bowlly’s (ft. Sid Phillips & His Melodians) 1931 song “Heartaches”, where it also gets it’s title, specifically from the lyrics:
“Your kiss was such a sacred thing to me, “I can't believe it's just a burning memory.”
Due to the original song having only two verses, almost all of the lyrics could appear in the sample.
The sample use here is clever (as many samples used are) in that it’s talking about pain, literally heartache, which the Caretaker must be feeling after his diagnosis.
Heartaches shows up a lot in future pieces, implying that this song was important or favored by the Caretaker, possibly alluding to a past or deceased lover. It’s the first of a few leitmotifs that will reoccur throughout the albums to come.
TRACK: A2 - We don’t have many days
A calm, serene track. It’s loop is more noticeable than the previous track. It samples Turner Layton & Clarence Johnstone’s 1932 song “Say It Isn’t So”.
The sample used is talking about a denial of something. In the original song, it’s a refusal to believe that the singer’s lover isn’t faithful. In the context of EATEOT, it becomes more about the denial of the Caretaker to accept that he has Alzheimer’s.
The part of the song sampled has the unheard lyrics: (meaning they appear at that melodic part in the original song, but only the music appears in EATEOT)
“Say that everything is still OK, that’s all I want to know. ”And what they’re saying, say it isn’t so.”
further showing the Caretaker’s desperation and hope that things are still OK, even though he (and we) know they aren’t, as the title suggests, he doesn’t have many days.
TRACK: A3 - Late afternoon drifting
The loop is very apparent in this one, and it kind of annoyed me after a while. It sounds like a ringtone or alarm. It samples Turner Layton & Clarence Johnstone’s 1927 song “It All Depends On You”. Voices from this song appeared in EATEOT’s prequel album, An Empty Bliss Beyond This World, in track 10 - Pared back to the minimal.
The sample used is talking about how the singer’s mood and actions depend on those of his lover, also talking about how “Flowers depend on sunshine and the morning dew. Each thing depends on something, and I depend on you.” In the context of EATEOT, it becomes a song about having to rely and depend on another person, ironically, the Caretaker needs a caretaker.
The part of the sample has the unheard lyrics:
“I can be happy, I can be sad, I can be good, or I can be bad, “it all depends on you. “I can be lonely out in a crowd. I can be humble, I can be proud. “It all depends on you.”
This could reference the behavioral and emotional issues that arise from Alzheimer’s and dementia, with Caretaker blaming all of his feelings and behaviors on the disease. Alternatively, it could be the Caretaker realizing a change in his personality, or having mood swings relating to everything going on, which he blames on his condition.
The later verse could be the Caretaker feeling alone with his condition, as well as his humility and pride about his life’s works.
I take the title as suggesting that the Caretaker is nodding off in the afternoon, as the elderly tend to do. Drifting off to sleep, or possibly drifting into thoughts. I dunno.
TRACK: A4 - Childishly fresh eyes
This track samples Russ Morgan & His Orchestra’s 1937/38 song “Moonlight and Shadows”.
The original sample contains no lyrics whatsoever, as it’s a purely instrumental piece (and quite a beautiful one at that!). There are versions of the song that have lyrics, but the sample used doesn’t. I dunno, maybe I’m wrong about this?
I don’t have any thoughts or speculation to make with this one. The lack of lyrical content makes it difficult to draw conclusions as to any deeper meaning. It’s just a good song.
TRACK: A5 - Slightly bewildered
This track has always been hard for me to hear, it’s so quiet and so much lower in pitch than all of the others. This track samples Turner Layton & Clarence Johnstone’s (ft. Arthur Crocker) 1927 song “Alabamy Bound”.
It also features voices from their 1929 song “The Wedding of the Painted Doll”, although it’s difficult to hear without a demonstration. “-of the paint-” plays very briefly at the end of each loop. These are the first lyrics to appear in EATEOT.
The first sample used (Alabamy Bound) is the singer having a good day, with no cares in the world. He’s headed back home via a train.
The other sample, The Wedding of the Painted Doll, is a fun little song about a doll getting married, with fairy tale figures like Red Riding Hood showing up to attend. It’s featured prominently in some of Kirby’s past songs, specifically in tracks 06/12 of An Empty Bliss Beyond This World.
This track is interesting, as it contains voices from one song and melody from another. This could be a mirror to tracks 06/12 of An Empty Bliss Beyond This World, which contains the melody of one song, and distorted voices towards the end of each loop. Interestingly enough, the voices in this song come from Wedding of the Painted Doll, which is the main melody of tracks 06/12 from An Empty Bliss, which share their name with the album. I think it’s an intentional reference by Leyland Kirby to show the Caretaker’s faulting memory.
Both songs mention saying goodbye to the blues, which appears to be the only link between them.
It could be that maybe the Caretaker is at home, or reminiscing about home, or his childhood? Maybe he’s going somewhere familiar and nostalgic, and is happy about that? I’m not sure. It could also be a recollection of past music he’s made or heard that’s brought him joy.
I guess you could say that this song leaves you... slightly bewildered? 😉
This is the shortest track on side A, and the shortest track in stage 1.
TRACK: A6 - Things that are beautiful and transient
This track is the final track of the A side of the record. It samples Wayne King & His Orchestra’s 1940 song “The Waltz You Saved For Me”. An earlier version (1931) of the song exists by Wayne King with Ernie Burchill providing vocals, but the sample used contains no lyrics.
“Transient”, defined, means something that is temporary, something fleeting, something that passes quickly out of existence.
This is the longest track on side A.
TRACK: B1 - All that follows is true
This track is the first on the B side of the record. It samples Ronnie O'Dell’s (ft. Maurice Winnick & His Orchestra) 1932 medley song “Medley: It Looks like Rain in Cherry Blossom Lane”.
The medley contains lyrics talking about whispers in the dark between lovers (among other things).
I know love songs are one of the most common type of song out there, but I wonder if all of these love songs are the Caretaker thinking about someone (or something) he loved/loves?
The title also suggests that something is to follow, and that it’s true in nature. It ends abruptly, with a somber echo.
TRACK: B2 - An autumnal equinox
This track samples Turner Layton & Clarence Johnstone’s 1933 song “In a Little Secondhand Store”. This track gives me a headache, although I adore the original sample.
The sample song is the singer looking around in a secondhand store, talking about things that he and his lover used to own that had been given up to the store after they separated, and how it pains him to see these things that were once important to him treated with such disregard.
It could be seen as the Caretaker looking at old possessions and remembering where he got them, and their stories.
The autumnal equinox marks the beginning of fall, the beginning of autumn. It’s the time of year that things start to become colder, as winter approaches. This could represent the Caretaker’s looming decline is on the way, his “fall” is starting. When you remember the previous song’s title “All that follows is true”, it paints the picture that a part of the Caretaker is aware that things are going to get worse.
TRACK: B3 - Quiet internal rebellions
This track samples Hughie Diamond’s (ft. Maurice Winnick & His Orchestra) 1932 song “Water Lilies in the Moonlight”.
This song is the singer asking his absent lover if they remember their past romantic escapades. It literally begins with the lyrics “Do you remember water lilies in the moonlight?”. The lyrics also imply that they had dreams for the future, with “And will our dream beside the stream someday come true?”.
The song echoes the melody, as if the Caretaker himself is trying to remember something he loved. The echoes suggest this is difficult. The final lyrics of the original sample also suggest that the Caretaker still has some faint hope that things might be OK.
The song ends with an echo trailing off into silence.
TRACK: B4 - The loves of my entire life
This track samples Turner Layton & Clarence Johnstone’s 1933 song “Willow Weep For Me”. The sample is heavily echoed, giving it an almost magical feeling.
The sample song is the singer talking about how sad he is, and asking a weeping willow to weep for him. This song HEAVILY harkens back to the previous song, “Quiet internal rebellions” when it comes to themes. Weeping willows, like water lilies, are found near water sources, and this is mentioned in the song:
“Willow, weep for me. Willow, weep for me. “Bend your branches green along the stream that runs to sea. “Listen to my plea, “listen, willow, and weep for me.”
The original song also talks about his lover’s dream being gone, leaving him to weep alone. The singer asks:
“Why did you send the darkness to me? “Are the shadows forever to be? “Where is the light I’m longing to see?“
And later:
“Now you’ve gone and left nothing for me, “nothing but a sweet memory.”
The sampled song features themes of loneliness and pain.
I see this song as the Caretaker, at the beginning, seeking sympathy for his condition, possibly from a lover, even more possibly from a deceased lover he’s remembering. The lines about darkness and shadow could represent his resentment of Alzheimer’s, his (rightful) view of it as a great horror that has invaded his life and left him hopeless and alone.
Alternatively, this (and a few other songs on stage 1) could be the Caretaker talking about losing his loved one. Maybe he’s remembering losing them? It adds a new layer to the album, as, not only is he forgetting the person(s) he loved, but he’s forgetting losing them, too.
TRACK: B5 - Into each others eyes
This track samples Turner Sam Costa’s (ft. Maurice Winnick & His Orchestra) 1938 song “Smoke from a Chimney”.
The sampled song is the singer talking about the memory of his lover, and how badly he wants them to return to him.
This, again, backs up the idea that the Caretaker is remembering a lost lover and wishes they could be together again.
This is the longest track on side B, and the longest track in stage 1.
TRACK: B6 - My heart will stop in joy
This is the final track on the B side of the record, and the final track of stage 1. It samples Mert Curtis’s (ft. Russ Morgan & His Orchestra) 1938 song “Room with a View”. This piece probably has the best opening, in my opinion. It’s so powerful. It has a presence. The original song sounds like it could be a sign off or title song to an old TV show.
The original song is the singer talking about having a room with the view of his lover, and how in love he is with them, and how he’s looking forward to sharing time with them.
“I’m only looking forward to the time when I’ll be sharing with you “our heaven for two, a room with a view.”
This reads to me like the Caretaker is thinking of the afterlife, possibly being able to spend it with his lost lover. A rare moment of bleak optimism, something for him to “look forward to” that isn’t horrible.
This is the shortest track on side B.
