Lawrence Osborne - The Glass Kingdom
What could be a good place to hide for some time? Bangkok it is Sarah resolves after she has stolen $200.000 from her former employer in New York. In the anonymous building “The Kingdom” she hopes to spend some weeks alone to have the situation cool down. Soon, she gets to know some other tenants, Mali, a half-Thai girl whom Sarah can never fully grasp. And there is the Chilean Ximena, a chef who dreams of her own restaurant whereas Natalie lives the life of a rich wife and sees Bangkok only as a short stop before moving to a better place. Even though most of the people keep to themselves, secrets move fast within the walls of the glass skyscraper and it does not take too long for Sarah to rouse her neighbours’ suspicions and interest.
I have been a huge fan of Lawrence Osborne’s novels for some years. Not only do his settings vary enormously – Morocco, Greece, Mexico, now Thailand – but he also creates highly interesting characters whom he confronts with challenging situations they, on the one hand, provoked themselves but which, on the other, unexpectedly get highly complicated without an actual good way out. Thus, he brings out the worst of human nature.
At first, Sarah seems a bit lost and you feel sympathy for her, but just until you learn which reckless behaviour brought her to the strange house. Yet, only for a short time do those negative feelings towards the protagonist linger since you soon realise that she is too naive and trusting for the world she entered. All other characters behave highly suspiciously and it is obvious that the young American will easily fall prey to them even though they are all quite diverse and aim at different things, whom their victim will be is more than obvious.
Just as the outer world is shaken by a political turmoil, also the inner world of The Kingdom seems to crumble. Decision have to be made and options have to be weighed quickly. Cleverly, Osborne builds increasing suspense and shows those sides of human character you never wanted to see. Threats appear from all corners, even the most unexpected, all heading to a highly tragic end.

“It is not true No it is not true That we come to live on earth We come here only to dream We come only to sleep” —Aztec Song ———————————— This quote appears at the beginning of Lawrence Osborne’s “Only to Sleep”, a new Philip Marlowe novel commissioned by Raymond Chandler’s estate to give the iconic private detective one last case. 📗📙📘📕📗📙📘 #gasstationburrito #books #bookstagram #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #reading #currentlyreading #whatImreading #bookaholic #booklove #bookquotes #bookishfeatures #bookfeaturepage #bookishfeatures #librarian_of_gram #bookaholic #Instabooks #instabook #instareads #igreads #igbooks #booksofinstagram #Bookporn #raymondchandler #thebigsleep #philipmarlowe #lawrenceosborne #onlytosleep #vintageanchorbooks #crownpublishing https://www.instagram.com/p/BmOaDQIgV7z/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=icaiblqale6x

The Forgiven/ A Hedonistic Moroccan Feast
I could write a treatise on the independent bookstore and why it’s crucial that it survive the dawn of the Amazon era. However, this simple anecdote that led me to The Forgiven by Lawrence Osborne, proves my point rather well.
Tumblr media
A few weeks ago, I was browsing in Three Lives, an adorable nook of a bookstore in the West Village. I adore this shop for many reasons: when you come upon it, you’ve been traipsing some of the oldest, most beautiful streets in New York, surrounded by the ghosts of Dorothy Parker and Eugene O’Neill. It’s a tiny little shop tucked into a corner frozen in time and when you pass through the threshold, you’re transported back to the bookshops of days past. But the number one reason I adore Three Lives, is because their staff is so incredibly knowledgeable and knows exactly what you want when you yourself aren't even sure. I had wandered back and forth through the small, appropriated sections of the shop a few times when one of the booksellers approached me.
“You’re absolutely welcome to browse,” he said. “But let me know if I can help you find something.”
“Actually,” I said. “I’m looking for a novel that will pull me in, head over heels and have me reading under my desk at work. Abraham Verghese’s Cutting for Stone did that. I want a repeat performance.”
“I have just the thing,” he said, striding over to a bookshelf. “This book just about killed me. You won’t emerge until you’re done.” When I opened its pages on the train ride home and was sucked immediately in, I was reminded of the power of the independent bookstore.
The Forgiven is a story of a British couple traveling to a raucous, hedonistic party thrown by a gay couple in the middle of a sprawling villa deep in the Atlas Mountains. En route to the party, David and Jo fatally injure a young man selling fossils on the side of the road.

What unfolds is a haunting tale of retribution, revenge and hidden secrets. David follows the dead boy’s father into the desert for his funeral while Jo stays behind to “enjoy” the party. Amongst some of the most titillating descriptions of orgiastic activities, culinary delights spun from the likes of Ali Baba’s chef meeting the Mad Hatter and aperitifs that made my mouth water, The Forgiven was replete with some of the most wholesome, desirable descriptions I’d ever read. In fact, upon finishing the book, I felt despondent, as though I could never write like that. But I polished it off, told myself that this book was something to aspire to, and then promptly requested Rohit to make a Moroccan feast that might rival the ones they enjoyed in The Forgiven.
Tumblr media
*Harissa-marinated filet of sole with braised lentils, roasted eggplant and broccoli sprouts*
Tumblr media
  *Tabbouleh salad*
We had visited Morocco in 2007 – we walked through the twisty streets of the market in Fes and the sprawling ones of the market in Marrakech. We took a cooking class and fell in love with the flavors of the country – the tagines, the olives, the ras-al-hanout and orange blossom water, and the honey, oh the honey.
Tumblr media
*Roasted cauliflower and sauteed carrots dressed with honey, slivered almonds, cumin and cinnamon*
Tumblr media
*Trinity meatballs (pork/veal/beef) with zaa'tar, sumac, honey in a tomato-based sauce with mint, roasted parsnip and fennel*
Rohit called upon his love of all these flavors to focus on a brilliant feast made for revelry, hedonism and lots and lots of wine. We enjoyed this spread along with two friends that are getting married this May and will be honeymooning where else, but Morocco.

Philip Marlowe could simply enjoy his time as a retired investigator, at 72 he doesn’t need to take over a job anymore. But when he is asked to investigate the death of a certain Donald Zinn, his curiosity is aroused and he heads to Mexico to follow the traces of the rich American – who is actually alive and kicking and everything but dead. Lawrence Osborne’s novel “Only to sleep” is an homage to Raymond Chandler and his great crime noir protagonist. It is a high risk to take over a fictional character and to continue a series, but Osborne did a great job and his Marlowe can easily compete with the original. A classic crime noir in a very convincing old style.

Thanks to @vintageanchorbooks and @crownpublishing for copies of the new annotated edition of ‘The Big Sleep’ and Lawrence Osborne’s brand new Philip Marlowe novel, ‘Only to Sleep’. 📖 It’s been so long since I’ve read ‘the Big Sleep’, it’ll be interesting to read it along with the background and notes and photos that go beyond the original story to give you an idea what Chandler was seeing and researching and really experiencing while writing this incredible detective story. 📚 Very excited about ‘Only to Sleep’ as well. From the synopsis and the first few pages I couldn’t help but read already, it reminds of me ‘Twilight’ with Paul Newman and Gene Hackman; one last case for an aging private detective, a good man, however flawed, allowing himself to get pulled back into another mess because he’s the only one who will do the right thing when the time comes, no matter who gets hurt. 📕📗📙📘📕📗📙📘 #gasstationburrito #books #bookstagram #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #reading #currentlyreading #whatImreading #bookaholic #booklove #bookquotes #bookishfeatures #bookfeaturepage #bookishfeatures #librarian_of_gram #bookaholic #Instabooks #instabook #instareads #igreads #igbooks #booksofinstagram #Bookporn #raymondchandler #thebigsleep #philipmarlowe #lawrenceosborne #onlytosleep #vintageanchorbooks #crownpublishing https://www.instagram.com/p/BmOMZwrgdly/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=9tef32mumq7

(via Lawrence Osborne - Beautiful Animals)
When the summer holidays on a lovely Greek island turn into a nightmare: a young and innocent American girl makes the acquaintance of a manipulative and scheming Brit and at the end of the summer, she has to realise that she will be haunted for the rest of her life. Lawrence Osborne has created a most fascinating character who is complotting and does not care if her plans cost other people’s lives. “Beautiful Animals” starts like the perfect summer read before twisting into a real horror.

(via Lawrence Osborne - Denen man vergibt)
