"They don't give you a manual for being a vampire." -> Jules tried that on Auguste and my boy simply went and wrote a whole encyclopaedia on vampires to ensure that, from then on, "they" do.

Furnace Room
By Ed Staskus    Abner Vance first spied Odessa Ballard through a second-floor window at the Majestic Hotel. She was fiddling with her skirt standing waiting on the corner of Central Avenue and East 55th Street for the CTS streetcar. It was a sunny summer day. Odessa did pantry work and was on her way home. He spotted her from behind his venetian blinds.    “I had just gotten back from Woodland…

Forget allergens and random magic items. The only thing that can trully cause both physical and psychic damage to Auguste are books like this.
You would think that a vampire scholar would hate Twilight's vampire anatomy, but I assure you that Auguste spent many delightful hours arguing with Charlie and the Van Allen couple about what kind of material Twilight vampire skins could be made of, to be both rigid and shiny, but also flexible enough that they can move their joints without looking like puppets.
The scene in which Bella googles "vampires", lands in "vampires A-Z.com", lands on one of those "mythological vampires" lists, reads the entry "stregoni benefici: a vampire who is said to be in the side of good and is a mortal enemy to evil vampires" and considers her research done? This makes them go feral.
Don't get them started on Carlisle's work and research ethics in the medical field.
(I get ticked off by whatever was Meyer's source for "vampire myths around the world", I HATE those ahystorical hodge-podge of creatures that are more designed to bolster page count of "vampire encyclopaedias" than to draw any relevant folkloric parallels.)
(...look, I own 35 academic books on vampires - mostly about folkloric vampires - so I can't help but have Opinions about it.)
(What do you mean I'm a doctor in Chemistry Education, not History, so why do I have a thesis worth of references on East European folklore? That's what happens when your scientist brain is also your writer brain.)
(...If the Humanities Dept. would have me, I would totally get a second PhD on this, no hesitation.)
i'm the guy who writes the books that the protagonist in supernatural horror movies frantically reads somewhere in act ii. job's pretty easy. lot of "legends of vampires have recurred all throughout human history" and "demonologists agree that the quickest way to un-summon a demon is to trap it in a cursed object". no citations of course; they don't pay me citation money. i had to learn html back in the early aughts when everyone started seeking their supernatural info on websites they found via top search engines like FINDLER and WEBSIGHT but that's died down now which is great because i didn't have it in me to pick up css. currently working on a new book about horses that are evil. it's called HORSES THAT ARE EVIL in all caps so the protagonist can find it quickly to yank off the library shelf. it will be published 35 years ago.

Stop incorrecting me
I genuinely wonder if anyone else gets this.
You write your character, you make your fun little OC and you work hard to make them fleshed out, interesting, and genuinely just fun to see on the screen.
And then arrives a Butthead.
Now Butthead can be just a random reader or maybe a fellow writer looking to collab with you, but the intent of their visit matters less than the nature of it: they have come to complain. They want to correct you-- with incorrect or irrelevant information.
The Butthead does not necessarily arrive just to hate. Some do. Some want to be helpful! They believe they're fighting the good fight! It's just that they have decided to die on a hill of their own ignorance.
I write a ftm squire by the name of Lavert who wears shapewear. People will crawl out of the woodwork to tell me corsetry was only ever worn by women, never once bothering to browse the internet and see if their assumption might be wrong. It is easier to accuse a trans person of transphobia and fetishizing a trans character than it is to type in "Did men ever wear corsets or fitted vests?" in Google's search bar.
Incidentally, his daughter wears braids. Both characters hail from a culture inspired by Slavic history, where women could seldom be seen with their hair hanging free without at least ribbons or sashes to hide it. Naturally, someone helpfully informed me that only Nordic countries wore braids and I was appropriating culture by... weaving hair.
Brown and black characters get a lot of this too. Black pirate? Nooo, not historically accurate! A squire? HEAVEN FORBID!
I've recently committed the sin of writing a vampire woman with brown skin, that is also in a position of privilege/power. Not only has someone complained that she'd "never get that position in real life!" as if people of colour have never held authority, but also that all vampires are supposed to be white and pale.
Here's the thing though, not only did vampires in the mythology I was raised on have red or dark skin, but they didn't burn or sparkle in sunlight either. Also, please bear with me for this one...
THEY DON'T EXIST!
If you were the correctest person on the planet, and you're most definitely not, there is absolutely no benefit to trying to police what people write. Stop being a stick in the mud or the next vampire I write will have pink skin with green polka dots, drink exclusively orange juice, and be crowned Queen of the Planet!
If you want to comment on someone doing their character wrong, please first research whether you're doing yours right. When you've wasted a few hours wondering whether you have the correct information, ask yourself what the actual benefit of messaging a person about this is. Will it actually help someone marginalised or just make you feel better about your overinflated ego?
Stop trying to correct people at every turn.
Better yet, stop trying to incorrect them!

Donald Lavert Rogers (September 17, 1962 – June 27, 1986) was a football player who was a safety in the NFL for two seasons during the mid-1980s. He played college football for the UCLA Bruins and was recognized as an All-American. He played professionally for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, but his career was cut short when he died of a heart attack caused by cocaine use in 1986.
He was born in Texarkana, Arkansas. He graduated from Norte Del Rio High School in Sacramento, California, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball, garnering All-City honors in all three sports. His brother Reggie Rogers played in the NFL
He attended UCLA, where he played for the Bruins. He was a Co-Player of the Game in the 1983 Rose Bowl for UCLA, along with quarterback Tom Ramsey. He tied a Rose Bowl record in the 1984 Rose Bowl when he made two interceptions from Illinois Fighting Illini quarterback Jack Trudeau.
He was selected in the first round with the 18th overall pick of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He played two seasons with the Browns (1984-85).
He died of a heart attack caused by a cocaine overdose the day before his wedding. His death came only eight days after that of Len Bias, an NBA draft pick who died of cocaine abuse, prompting a national discussion about the relationship between illegal drugs and athletes. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

My stuff
The Chrysopoeia of Victoria Harvey: My current work-in-progress. It's a comic following a few mage apprentice children growing up in hard times, getting tangled in the messes of the adults around them, without giving up the joys of being fascinated by weird stuff and making friends. Mirror. PT-BR Version.
Noturno em Sol Maior (my published novel - BR Portuguese only, sorry): Grumpy sickly teenage girl is investigating a death and a disappearance. Talkative vampire teenager can't stop teasing her instead of just handing over information. Things get serious when you least expect.
Bram & Vlad: Comic strip meant to make fun of vampire tropes, starring the descendants of the characters in the book Dracula. It's run is already finished, but there's plenty of extra material.
Bram's Vampire Hunter Handbook: About 30 chapters of DETAILED descriptions of vampire anatomy, powers, hunting behaviour, dating habits, as well as the best hunting weapons, tactics and team formations (and more!).
The Green Star: The first draft of a book that I'm now working to divide and two and expand. It's a collection of episodes in two very different timelines: 1) the first few decades of the life of Auguste Lavert, legendary vampire Encyclopaedist of the 18th century and 2) how Auguste and Cidinha das Mercês, a young and poor aspiring artist, met in the 80's and their ace sex-repulsed butts finally found someone they feel comfortable around.
It happens in the same universe as Noturno em Sol Maior. Auguste's daughter Helena is a secondary character in Noturno, and Diego's vampire mother is Alexander van Allen's wet nurse. You could say that Noturno in Sol Major and adjacent stories are the Next Gen spin-off/sequel of the main storyline with the Van Allens, Auguste and Charlie.
(Somewhen in the next few years, The Green Star will be expanded to portray more of Auguste's adventures while collecting data, being framed by an interview done by Cidinha, and the romance part [which was supposed to be the framing, but grew out of control] will become Sanguine and Ink, also featuring some extra scenes.)

And now you all know how Auguste got a lot of data for his encyclopoedia.
Auguste: "If you don't kill me, I can organize all knowledge about vampires in a way that makes it easier to be referenced, cross-referenced and transmitted. It will make it possible for us to create ways to make our existence more comfortable and less harmful to others, faster than ever."
Vampire leaders: "...Neeeeerd."
Auguste: *sigh* "It will also provide a way for you to publicize your families' feats, not to mention the possibility of creating ways to rank said feats in an objective scale to determine who is better than the others."
Vampire leaders: You will live. And take our money, too.
What if vampires had their own record book?
When you live forever, ordinary human achievements lose their meaning. But vampires—proud creatures with a passion for rivalry—would likely have their very own Book of Records.
What extraordinary feats might make it into their pages?
Here are just a few examples:
The oldest vampire still alive today.
The most "victims" claimed in a single night.
The tallest castle built from scratch (Its spires reach the clouds, and its rooms are filled with labyrinths. Rumor has it, the castle is so heavily trapped that even its owner can’t always get inside)
The longest period without consuming blood.
The longest marriage among vampires.
What other records might vampires set?

THAT'S SO ADORABLE THANK YOU!
Alex's and Auguste's whole families (bar a couple of exceptions) are somewhat on the spectrum, so Victor don't need to worry about the club flunking. X3
Also, if you don't follow Alicia and/or Vampires don't Belong in Fairytales, correct that NOW and, while you are at it, read the books. They are incredibly fun!
While we are at it, read The Green Star as it is while you can! I'm dividing and expanding it into two books and will eventually scrap that old thing. X3

I know that's the ace flag rather than the acespec flag but shhhh. Last panel left to right: Alex (from The Green Star) Auguste (from The Green Star) You should read it, okay? Here
