Denver Shenanigans
I was going to do a whole write-up of my trip to Denver but, honestly, it would end up being huge.
I’ve posted about my adventures on the ice at Pepsi Center, about meeting Tyson and Gabe, and embarrassing myself in front of Colin.
Here’s some other highlights.
We saw Marc Moser very briefly behind the bench before warmups at the first game we went to. One of my friends, who is local, mentioned I was over from the UK and like some sort of mystical Avs Santa Moser pulled a pop socket and pin out of his pocket and passed them to me. We couldn’t hear each other through the glass so we mostly communicated by mouthing words and using hand gestures but he asked me how I was enjoying my trip and I told him it was great.
Big Z caught me taking a photo of him during warmups.
Kerfy got out of his car to pose for a photo with a little kid and then stayed out for everyone else. We’re laughing here because we both got distracted by something someone else was doing and forgot we were supposed to be looking at the camera. Also, he’s very warm. Like I’ve got about 4 layers on here and I could still feel how warm he was when he put his arm around me for the photo.
Long Beach Native Matt Nieto is the sweetest guy. He took the time to read the poster I was getting everyone to sign and asked me how I was enjoying my first visit to Denver.
Barbs was also really sweet. He asked me if we had a hockey league back at home and we talked about that a bit. He was disappointed to hear that my city doesn’t have any sort of well known soccer team.
We did a tour of Pepsi Center while the Canes were practicing. Dougie Hamilton photobombed us.
We ran into Lauren Gardner and Conor McGahey during the tour and they are absolutely the nicest people. Even though I’m sure they had places to be they stopped and chatted to us for a good 10 minutes. Lauren called me Red, hugged us all multiple times and told us to come up and see her before the game that evening. Conor is a total nerd (and I say that with love as a fellow nerd). We talked about comics and playing musical instruments (he plays sax). He always says hi to me on the radio when I tweet to say I’m listening and I got to thank him for that. Also, if you think his voice sounds good on the radio that’s NOTHING to what it sounds like in person. So rich and smooth. I could have listened to him talk all day.
I joked that I was milking how far I’d traveled and that every sign I was making was going to mention that I’m from the UK. Lauren said she’d try and get our signs on TV. Haven’t actually watched any of the games we were at to see if that happened yet.
I was really hoping to meet them both and was considering tweeting them to ask before this happened. Lauren is such an inspiration for women wanting to get into sport broadcasting. She really knows her stuff and is smart, warm and kind. I’m so sad she’s leaving Altitude but I know she’s going to do great things. And I got to tell her how much I love listening to her on the podcast. There’s always something missing when she’s not able to make it and one of the other guys fills in.
They insisted on taking a photo with us before they left and then debated whether we should stand in front of the goal or in front of the Zamboni.
We got to see where Coach Bednar does all his press stuff
And where Lauren does all the intermission interviews
We went shopping before the game and I came away with a ton of stuff including this amazing tshirt. Technically it’s a youth shirt but one of the perks of being short is that youth stuff fits me.
As requested we went up to see Lauren before the game and she gave me a high five for getting a puck from Tyson. You could tell she’s feeling really emotional about leaving and she gave us all more hugs and said she was going to miss everyone.
The lights are super bright for the cameras so we all look really washed out while Lauren in her stage makeup looks flawless
Our signs made it onto the Avs Twitter and look at this perfect timing of Tyson skating right in front of my sign.
The next day we went to Sobo which is the liquor store Mark Rycroft owns. We wanted to buy some gifts for friends/family and he was super nice. He walked us around, gave us recommendations based on our budget and insisted on getting a photo with us before we left. He was so excited that our group was from all over.
It’s pretty common knowledge that Tyson Barrie loves Dairy Queen and when I mentioned we don’t have it in the UK the rest of the group decided we must go there. So here I am having my first ever Blizzard (cookie dough). It was pretty good.
For our third game we all made signs for Gabe and wore Landeskog jerseys to show that we miss him. We all ended up on the jumbotron which was kind of cool (I clearly do not know how to draw the # symbol).
I survived Colin Wilson staring right at me while wearing a backwards hat
Also, EJ looking like he’s about to murder me
During one of the intermissions we met Bernie which was super fun.
At the end of our final trip to practice I had a pretty decent collection of signatures on my poster. I’ve now bought a frame for it and I’m going to hang it over my desk in my bedroom. I appreciate Colin and Tyson signing next to each other even though I met them on different days. My two faves together.
I love that for our last game we all inadvertently ended up wearing jerseys with different players’ names on. We have a broad selection of faves.
Once the game was over and it was starting to hit me that I was leaving the next morning things took a turn for the amazing. The other #DenverShenanigans girls had been plotting and snuck off and bought me a game used Colin Wilson stick for my birthday. This whole trip was technically a birthday present for myself (I turn 40 in September but there’s no hockey in September). I honestly had no idea they’d been planning this and pretty much started crying in the middle of the bar at Pepsi Center. I’m so lucky to know such wonderful people.
And then @some-say-this-is-a-blog made me a beautiful quilt in Avs colours. I honestly don’t know what I did to deserve such amazing friends.
And that concludes my Denver Shenanigans. Honestly, Denver is one of the most friendly places I’ve ever been to. Even the TSA guys at the airport were friendly!
We’ve already started making tentative plans to go back next year for the Stadium game but it’s going to depend on the schedule. I definitely want to go back next year but I want to do like I did here and go to block of home games. It’s a long way to travel for just one.

Vintage Hollywood Couple’s Zodiac Signs (Part 1)
Clark Gable & Carole Lombard
Aquarius (Venus in Capricorn) & Libra (Venus in Leo)
“You can trust that little screwball with your life or your hopes or your weaknesses, and she wouldn’t even know how to think about letting you down.”
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were arguably one of Hollywood’s most famous and glamorous couples. They met on set of No Man Of Her Own in 1930 but occasional aimable greetings was as far as it went. When their paths crossed again 6 years later at a party, Gable asked Lombard to take a ride in his new convertible with him and thus began their passsionate love affair. They started dating and as they got to know each other, Gable noticed that Carole was as witty and charming as she was on screen but also able to open up her heart and love him as the man he was. Their time together was filled with laughter, vivaciousness and genuine happiness but it sadly did not last long due to a plane crash in which Carole Lombard was killed. After that, Clark Gable tried to find someone just as lively, down-to-earth and kind as Carole but he never managed to experience that kind of love again.
Frank Sinatra & Ava Gardner
Sagittarius (Venus in Capricorn) & Capricorn (Venus in Scorpio)
“We were high-strung people, possessive, jealous and liable to explode fast. When I lose my temper, you can’t find it any place. He’s the same." When his friend told Sinatra that Ava Gardner lives just beneath his bachelor penthouse on a night in 1948 he yelled “Ava...we know you’re down there” into the evening air. Suprisingly, the smokingly sexy and exceptionally beautiful Ava stuck her head through the curtains and smiled at him. She knew who he was. When they met again at a party, they went for a drink and something lingered in the air? Love? Desire? Understanding? Whatever it was, both were equally overwhelmed by the situation and went home to his apartment where Ava stole one kiss after which she went home. Their love was fiery, passionate and stormy because both were big personalities - The Diva and The Star. They would fight, make love, fight again and then pledge each other eternal love. With them it was always hot or cold, no inbetween and after being married one year they started to break up just to get back together a dozen times. She reminded him of his domineering and despotic mother and while he had some rough years to go through, her career was the epitome of success. When all the sex and tension wore off, you could see the problems underneath and both realized that nothing held them together anymore.
Vivien Leigh & Laurence Olivier
Scorpio (Venus in Libra) & Taurus (Venus in Aries)
“If we loved each other only with our bodies I suppose it would be alright. I love you with much more than that. I love you with, oh everything somehow, with a special kind of soul.” When Vivien Leigh first saw Laurence Olivier in 1936, she knew immediately that she wanted to be with him. But both were married at the time and thus it seemed more like a foolish dream than reality. One year later however, they were both cast in Fire Over England and they bonded not only on screen but also behind the cameras where their longing quickly became unbearable and they started a three year long secret love affair. But as their success and popularity grew, it was impossible to hide their feelings and 1939 their love went public. In 1940 they both divorced their spouses and shortly after receiving the good news, they decided to marry. Both dived into the relationship wholeheartedly, and, most of all, with passion, missing each other when they were apart and not letting go of the other when they were together. X-rated love letters indicate a very intense love life, as well as emotional turmoil. Soon they were the “first couple” of Britain but it grew more and more evident that Leigh suffered from mental illness, becoming depressed and finally suffering a breakdown. Both had affairs, and were equally tormented by Vivien’s illness which is why they visibly grew apart until they were divorced in 1961.
Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall
Capricorn (Venus in Capricorn) & Virgo (Venus in Leo)
“I never believed that I could love anyone again…you are my last love and all the rest of my life I shall love you and watch you and be ready to help you.” Lauren Bacall first saw Humphrey Bogart on screen in Casablanca and while her friend considered the male lead role extremely attractive, she did not see what all the fuss was about. In 1944, she was cast to play opposite Bogart in To Have And Have Not and although she first was not very interested in her castmember, she felt very nervous on the first day of filming which Bogart noticed and tried to solve by telling silly jokes to get her to relax. Three weeks later, while they were joking around in Bacall’s dressing room, Bogart suddenly kissed her and asked for her phone number and from that moment on chemistry between the two changed. But the director of Have And Have Not harshly disapproved of their relationship, trying everything to put an end to their affair, thinking of it as a phase but Humphrey and Lauren were not joking around anymore. When they had the opportunity to continue their professional and romantic relationship on their second film, they looked lovestruck, completely bewitched by the other. In 1945, they married but the age gap of 25 years began to show, as Bogart wanted a quiet life and Bacall was the life of every party. Both had affairs but they remained united until Bogart’s death caused by cancer. Both were understanding and respected and loved the other too much to hurt them.

And so you flip The switch Patch on into the ship Fix, the glitch You’re my queen of fixing it! Now, Wake up! Wake up Sondra And fire that laser! Oooooo! Now, I know you’re new to space, but with all tech you’re just an ace, so adapt! Yeah! The ships on auto pilot, Bloor’s lying on his side, he’s been zapped! Zapped! So flip The switch Girl, you’re in your element Fix, the glitch Charge those blasters, take a breath And Wake up x8 Wake up Sondra x2 And fire that laser!! Calm your hands from their shaking No time to start fading Your charging the lasers And you’re doing great kid Ooo-oo-oo-oo Your friends all need saving So remember your training It’s as easy as aiming Set those Null suckers blazing! Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! Well the Null regroup and they praise the void They scan the scatter shattered shards of the ships she’s destroyed They find her on some space dust, all their lasers lock But she turbo blasts faster; all they hit is rock Before they notice that they’ve missed her, like a missile she dives into the swarm Carving armor, making martyrs, and she does it all with perfect form Oh! Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! Ripping through flesh with such efficiency! Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! Aw... she’s so metal! Literally! Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! They fire in dismay as she weaves through their formation Every blast they land on her, two more send null to cremation She pulls their squadron leader out his ship by his face To watch his lungs exploding in the vacuum of space, goddamn! Well the last ships charge, catch our lady off guard She takes the impact and she flips back, hits some wreckage hard In the moment that she’s dazed, the lasers blaze and carve; But with the will of all first ladies she maintains and rearms She wipes some oil from her nose, adjusts her freon hose and proudly she stands Her reserve tanks are near empty, redirects it all to her laser hands - blam blam blam blam! Oh! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah! Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! The strength of Ab’gail Adams with the grace of Jackie O Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! With Martha Washington’s passion and the aim of Liz Monroe Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! Blasting nulls to atoms, laughing as they go Ro-Battle, Go-Battle, Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Aiiiiii! Aiiiiii! Go Go Go Go Go! With the last of her strength She fell from the sky Onto an asteroid nearby Oh but she did not die She looks up to the stars Diagnostics are run Without massive repairs, and without parts to spare Her flying days are done But she smiles, looks around This is her home now There’s no battle, no battle, no She braved battle, saved what matters most Oh-oh-oh-oh...!

Sinatra: Behind the Legend by J. Randy Taraborelli
Having had a life-long fascination with Marilyn Monroe, I’ve found myself interested in those who were inextricably linked to her. Frank Sinatra is one such character. I’ve read a couple of biographies about Sinatra but I was really interested to read J. Randy Taraborelli’s biography after reading his fascinating insight into Marilyn Monroe previously. Truth be told, I mithered my better half to get me this book for Valentine’s Day, which he did, and I thought it would be gracious to read it before the next Valentine’s Day comes and goes! With that in mind, it has been my first book of 2017.
Taraborelli charts Sinatra’s life in wonderful bite-size chapters from his birth to his death, leaving no stone unturned, to find out the truth about Ol’ Blue Eyes, his friends, his women, his links to the mob and his often-violent temper. I’d read a lot of what is recounted in this book in previous biographies but Taraborelli seems to dig a little deeper and tells some anecdotes I wasn’t aware of.
This is a balanced biography that doesn’t glorify Sinatra where it isn’t deserved (he had a reputation for being a nasty piece of work at times) but shows a huge respect for his contribution to music, film and for that wonderfully unique, never-replicated voice that could portray a myriad of emotions with every carefully orchestrated word. Sinatra was a man of flaws, a vile temper, a man who could compartmentalise his life to extremes, cutting people out without a second thought and caring little of how his actions affected others.
Yet he was revered, by his family, his peers and his fans. Generous in many ways, those closest to him accepted him for what he was and learned how to handle him. His support for those who he felt were being persecuted illuminates his determination to right some of the worlds wrongs but which often made him unpopular in the eyes of some. Sinatra was a man of integrity and pride. He would be a best friend or worst enemy – nowhere in between.
Taraborelli does a fantastic job of showing Sinatra’s multi-faceted personality – the good, the bad and the downright ugly. For the most part though, whilst not excusing Sinatra for his bad behaviour, he leaves the reader wishing they could have known the “Chairman of the Board” and surmises just how much he was influenced by others along the way.
Undoubtedly, Sinatra could be cruel. His treatment of Lauren Bacall was harrowing to read but likewise was the many encounters he had with second wife Ava Gardner, who was toxic to Sinatra, yet seemed to be the true “love of his life”. I wonder how much of his life choices were determined by his feelings for Miss Gardner and whether their union was ultimately Sinatra’s major downfall.
Taraborelli has done a lot of research to corroborate the many claims made about Sinatra and has done a wonderful job of bringing it all together to give a rounded view of the life of a true Hollywood legend. I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover and whilst it is a chunky book to read, it needs every last page to give the reader the true picture of the man behind that amazing voice.
