Former Haas Performance Engineer Laura Muller is all set to become Esteban Ocon's race engineer from the 2025 F1 season onwards. Muller graduated from the Technical University of Munich in 2015 where she majored in Automotive Engineering. She completed her Masters from the same university two years later in the same discipline.

Laura has been with the Haas organization for years, at least since the 2022 regulations. However, she’s known as a WEC veteran for her work across multiple disciplines and cars: Muller joined the Endurance Racing series in 2019. She moved to DKR Engineering and worked in both LMP2, LMP3, DTM, and GT3 segments until 2021. In 2022, she joined Manthey Racing GmbH and GT2 European Series team under Porsche SE.

Laura Müller is 1 of the most experienced operatives in Motorsport. While completing her master's in Automative Engineering, Muller joined Phoenix Racing as an intern in 2014. She then worked as an Engineer Formula Renault 2.0 at Josef Kaufmann Racing in 2016. After spending two years in the role, Muller moved to Hero Motocorp in Brazil to work as a data engineer.

In 2024, Laura Muller marked 10 years in her motorsport career, starting as an intern with Audi's LMS team and now in F1, she will be Esteban Ocon’s engineer at the pinnacle of motorsport, the first woman to ever take the helm of race engineering through radio since Formula 1 became a sport.

Also as a heads up 90% of British/international reporting are calling her “Muller” or “Mueller” but her name is actually Laura Müller.

i know it's a minor thing to most people, but with a second umlaut ridden last name entering the (kind of) grid next year, i just want to gently point out that if you can't be arsed to use the ü, the alternative is ue. not just u. that's a different letter. slightly dramatic example, but imagine calling charles laclerc or lewis homilton. if you don't wanna type hülkenberg or müller or don't have the ü in your keyboard, you can type huelkenberg or mueller. (the same goes for ä becoming ae and ö becoming oe, should you ever need that information lol.) it's a small detail that even f1 broadcasts can't seem to be bothered about, but it has caught my eye so many times now that it's started getting a little annoying.

Meet Laura Müller: The first female F1 race engineer

The news were made official yesterday by the Haas F1 team that for 2025 season, Esteban Ocon will have the first ever female F1 full time race engineer in history, Laura Müller. Laura has experience in the team where she most recently held the role of perfromance engineer before her promotion. With this move up, Haas is making history and creating a safer space for women in motorsports once again.

Esteban broke the news months ago in an interview but now the team confirmed the news. Ayao Komatsu praised Laura for her work in the team and mentioned how easy it was for him to make the decision to promote her into the position of the race engineer for Esteban to continue climbing her career ladder in the team.

What does the race engineer do?

Being a race engineer means you climbed into one of the most senior roles in the team, maybe just behind the team principal. It is a trackside role meaning you are a part of the circus moving all over the world instead of being part of the team staying in the factory/team base. Race engineer is driver’s main communication channel between himself in the car and the team at trackside but also at sim which is happening at the same time as races. They communicate through team radio which sometimes gets broadcasted and sometimes stays private. Besides commentators and drivers themselves, race engineers are usually the only people you can hear during sessions (if it’s a special ocassion, for example after a win, you can sometimes hear team principal speaking on the team radio as well).

Bryan Bozzi (for Charles Leclerc), Riccardo Adami (Lewis Hamilton, previously Carlos Sainz and even before that Sebastian Vettel), Gianpiero Lambiase (Max Verstappen), Peter Bonnington (Kimi Antonelli and previously Lewis Hamilton), Marcus Dudley (George Russell), William Joseph (Lando Norris) or Tom Stallard (Oscar Piastri) are among the most well known race engineers currently in F1.

Who is Laura?

Laura was previously working for Haas as performance engineer for Kevin Magnussen, getting promoted one step higher to a full time race engineer. She joined Haas back in 2022 and worked on the simulator – similarly to Ruth Buscombe for example. Laura already worked as a race engineer in different series having a decade of experience under her belt. She worked in Formula Renault, in WEC series also taking part in prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans and in DTM series before then switching to Haas.

Ayao praised her for being determined, hard working and having very good work ethic. He also said that he can see this fitting for working with Esteban Ocon as they will be similar personality-wise. He also mentioned that in terms of radio communication, she is very clear and calm, which are the qualities you need to have as a race engineer.

Esteban already had his first experience with Laura as his engineer in Jerez, Spain, where both driver took part in previous cars testing (TPC), and according to Komatsu, both drivers were very pleased with the experience.

What are some of the similar higher roles of women in F1?

Haas also named Carine Criedlich (previously working for Racing Bulls) as a head of strategy, a move which is also expected from Red Bull with Hannah Schmitz who is currently in the role of strategy engineer. Ruth Buscombe who is currently working as F1TV presenter also used to work in strategical department of Sauber (and previously Ferrari or Haas) after getting promoted from performance engineer and before from simulations engineer. Bernie Collins took similar position as a strategy engineer in Aston Martin, although you may now know her better as Sky Sports and F1TV strategy commentator.

If you look up F1 in bookstores you can find many novels including women working in F1 as well, sadly none of them feature women in these higher up positions, instead focusing on the more “traditional” jobs for female in motorspors including presenters, press officers or head of communications. There are many women working in these areas of course, you may have seen Laura Winter or Naomi Shiff as presenters, Britta Roesce or Mia Djacic working as press officers for Sebastian and Charles or Silvia Hoffer Frangipane as head of communications in Ferrari.

Last time you could properly see a woman in a high position on the pitwall in broadcasting – besides the aforementioned – it was Claire Williams in the position of a team principal of team Williams that her father Frank Williams founded.

F1 Academy is one of the initiatives trying to change this trend with Susie Wolff being one of the biggest advocates for women in motorsport as a female F1 driver herself and the face of the F1 Academy project. The series features female mechanics, race engineers, strategists and of course, drivers.
