Ritchie Valens - La Bamba 1958
"La Bamba" is a Mexican folk song, originally from the state of Veracruz, also known as "La Bomba". The song is best known from a 1958 adaptation by rock and roll pioneer and forefather of the Chicano rock movement Ritchie Valens, which became a Top 40 hit on the US charts. Valens's version is ranked number 345 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. "La Bamba" has been covered by numerous artists, notably by Los Lobos whose version was the title track of the 1987 film La Bamba, a bio-pic about Valens; their version reached number 1 on many charts in the same year. Their music video won the 1988 MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film.
"La Bamba" is a classic example of the son jarocho musical style, which originated in the Mexican state of Veracruz, and combines Spanish, indigenous, and African musical elements. "La Bamba" likely originated in the last years of the 17th century. The oldest known historical references come from the town of Alvarado, Mexico, where it apparently was performed with an atypically lively rhythm. The oldest recorded version known is that of Alvaro Hernández Ortiz, who recorded the song with the name of "El Jarocho". His recording was released by Victor Records in Mexico in 1938 or 1939, and was reissued on a 1997 compilation by Yazoo Records, The Secret Museum of Mankind Vol. 4.
Ritchie Valens learned the song in his youth. In 1958 he recorded a rock and roll flavored version of "La Bamba", originally released as the B-side of his number-two hit "Donna". His recording of the song was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. On February 3, 1959, on what has become known as "The Day the Music Died", Valens died in a plane crash in Iowa, an accident that also claimed the lives of fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as their pilot. Valens was 17 years old at the time of his death. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame, the California Hall of Fame, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2018, his version of "La Bamba" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
"La Bamba" received a total of 92,2% yes votes!

GRAMMYS 2025 (Part 1)
So, the nominees for the Grammy Awards have been announced. The 67th ceremony will take place on February 2, 2025. Let's see what's going on in the blues categories.
BEST CONTEMPORARY BLUES ALBUM.
- Joe Bonamassa
tops the list of nominees with his 16th studio album last year, "Blues Deluxe Vol. 2". Joe has previously been nominated for a Grammy three times, including in this category for the album "Royal Tea".
"The contrast between a brash 26-year-old and a solid 46-year-old is significant. Is the fire burning as brightly as before? Do I still have the same thirst for creativity? Am I good enough to pay homage to the heroes of my songs? The answer lies somewhere in this album."
- Shemekia Copeland
participates in two more nominations besides this one: "Best American Roots Song" and "Best Americana Roots Performance", and all of them for the album "Blame It On Eve", which we recently introduced you to. Shemekia has previously received five Grammy nominations.
- Steve Cropper,
legendary guitarist, producer and songwriter, twice Grammy winner in 1968 and 1994 and winner of six nominations. Few are able to create new bands at the age of 80, but Steve Cropper is nominated for a Grammy in this category for the second time with his rock and soul quintet Steve Cropper & The Midnight Hour, for the debut album "Fire It Up" in 2021 and for the second album "Friendlytown" this year. Cropper recruited Billy Gibbons, Brian May and Tim Montana. "If your heart doesn't shake at the first bars of this album, it means you're already dead," Steve jokes.
- Ruthie Foster
and the album "Mileage". The tenth studio album by a folk-blues celebrity is a reflection on a life full of triumphs and losses. This is the story of the musical journey that led the "little black girl with a guitar" from singing in churches in rural Texas to numerous Grammy nominations (this is the sixth nomination) and collaborations with Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trax
- Antonio Vergara
and the album "The Fury". This is not just a celebration of modern blues, but a masterpiece. The famous blues guitarist, singer and producer assembled an intercontinental cast of artists to create the album. Vergara hails from Ecuador and combines the influences of Chicago and Texas blues with his Latin American roots, creating a timeless, boundary-breaking sound. He is the first Latin American artist to be nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category. Joe Bonamassa added the song "My Lucky Mojo" from this album to his personal Spotify playlist.
- Cedric Burnside
and the album "Hill Country Love". Cedric is the grandson of the famous delta bluesman R.L. Burnside, and from the age of 13 he began to tour with his grandfather as a drummer (by the way, he has several Blues Music Award awards in this category). At the age of 30, he won the Blues Music Award in the category "Best New Artist Debut" for the 2008 album "Two Man Wrecking Crew" with Lightning Malcolm. Two more albums in 2015 and 2018 were nominated for Grammys, and "I Be Trying" won in the category "Best Traditional Blues Album" in 2022. Cedric says that hill country blues (blues of the northern Mississippi region) is in his blood. "It doesn't matter where I end up: if I move to Australia or France, I'll still stay hill country. You can't take that away from me.… I feel like I am hill country blues."
- The Fabulous Thunderbirds
and the album "Struck Down". The band, which was founded in 1974 in Texas by Jimmy Vaughn, inviting Harper and vocalist Kim Wilson, who remains its only permanent member. In 1979-1983, the band released 4 albums, recognized as one of the most significant recordings of the "white blues", but not commercially very successful. In 1986, she won the Blues Music Award in the category "Band of the Year" and was twice nominated for a Grammy in 1987. Jimmy left the band in 1989 to record a joint album with Stevie Ray "Family Style". The recording of the album "Struck Down" was attended by Alvin Bishop, Bonnie Raitt, Mick Fleetwood, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal, Steve Strongman and famous music artist zydeco Teggapse Simien
- Sue Foley
and the album "One Guitar Woman". A solo acoustic album by a Canadian blues guitarist and singer dedicated to the "female guitar pioneers" who left their mark on music, not only in the blues: Elizabeth Cotten, Memphis Minnie, Rosetta Tharp, etc. Sue also wrote the book Guitar Woman. In 2001, Foley won the Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy), received 17 Maple Blues Awards, was nominated several times for Blues Music Awards and twice won this award in 2020 and 2023.
- The band "Little Feat"
and the album "Sam's Place". The band, founded in 1969 in California, performed eclectic blues rock with elements of country rock, southern rock, rhythm and blues and soul. Among the many rock bands of the 70s, she stood out for her original sound and high performance skills. In 1979, after the death of their leader Lowell George, the band broke up. The reunion took place in 1987. The last album "Rooster Rag" was released in 2012, and it was the last to feature guitarist and vocalist Paul Barrere (died in 2019). Paul wrote the band's hits such as Skin It Back, Time Loves a Hero and Old Folks Boogie. And suddenly, in May of this year, a new album was released, where all the leading vocal parts were performed by Sam Clayton. He is a percussionist and backing vocalist, in the band since 1972. The album consists of cover versions of famous blues standards, except for the opening track.
- Taj Mahal
and his sextet with the album "Swingin' Live at The Church in Tulsa".
There is no need to introduce this outstanding bluesman. He was nominated for a Grammy 9 times, won this award three times, and in the category "Best Contemporary Blues Album". And at the beginning of this year, at the famous Tulsa studio, a new album was recorded in front of a live audience in a typical genre for a musician, combining a variety of styles.

2023 Year End List - #6
Red Moon In Venus - Kali Uchis
Main genres: Neo-Soul, Contemporary R&B, Psychedelic Soul
A decent sampling of: Synth Funk, Smooth Soul
Coming out as a Kali Uchis stan.
But for real, the Colombian American singer/songwriter seems to be the one artist that music hipsters, the English mainstream(ish), and the Hispanic mainstream can all collectively agree upon. Part of this is most definitely owed to Kali's versatility as an artist, with a primary basis of sound rooted in R&B (particularly neo-soul) but regularly dipping her toes into the waters of reggaetón, hip hop, bolero, and afrobeats.
Kali is also a definite lover of retro chic, given her clear appreciation for mid 20th century easy-listening pop and old Hollywood glamour. She cites artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Celia Cruz, and Curtis Mayfield as some of her biggest influences. At the same time, she modernizes these influences and aesthetics with a post-sexual revolution ethos of overpowering feminine-centred eroticism and fiercely wielded confidence and self-love.
Her voice is pleasant, mature, and strikingly womanly, in that same kind of way when you first discover as a child the sensation of being struck by the awe-inspiring beauty of a grown woman. Even as a gay man, I can confidently say that I think this is a sort of universal childhood experience, right?
Actually, I think a lot of Kali Uchis' success as an artist can be attributed to just how likable her musical persona is. I think that deep down, many of us want to be a Kali - completely liberated, in touch with our sensuality, and going through life as a warm and confident optimist. She makes music that isn't just well-written; it makes you feel good about life.
After making a big splash with her stellar 2018 LP Isolation and following it up with the success of 2020's Sin Miedo which was more invested in her Latin American roots and corresponding following, I was very curious to see where she would take things next with her career.
In the end, as it would turn out, Kali Uchis' 2023 record didn't really amount to anything that surprising. Instead, we were treated to a progression and evolution in her sound that feels very natural to her, culminating in an album that makes good on the typical promises of a Kali Uchis project.
That is to say, Red Moon In Venus exists in a rose-tinted world bedecked with lush palm trees and populated by curvaceous mermaids. The record is a creamy cocktail of smooth and funky soul jams with the sweet taste of cinnamon kisses and strawberry wine. A true musical oasis of the richest fruits.
Kali really is at the top of her game here. Everything is a subtle improvement on what already mostly worked for her on past projects, with a little more psychedelic flavour added into the mix, resulting in a final product that just sounds and feels really gorgeous and summery to listen to. Not all great music has to be challenging; this just does incredibly well at what it is already comfortable doing.
The record's first song proper is the lead single "I Wish You Roses", a beautiful parting gift to an ex-lover she holds no grudge towards. Petals flutter past the mind's eye as the world of this neo-soul paean springs to life with all the shades of a summer's rainbow. This song is a soft sigh of relief, heard quite vividly in the actual noticeable sighing melodies of those psychedelic keyboards in the chorus. A very classy song, expressing a sentiment not nearly heard often enough in most music about breakups.
"All Mine" is a lights off "wah-wah" slow jam describing a greedy lover's fantasy of having someone completely to themselves. The sound of the passionate id taking over the superego's domain.
Fans of the big city pop explosion that happened on the internet with the surge of Mariya Takeuchi's "Plastic Love" a few years ago may get a lot of mileage out of "Endlessly", a synth funk track that captures a similar kind of metropolitan utopianism. Kali really knows how to bring the kind of riding-passenger-in-a-red-convertible energy that a track like this one needs to really all come together.
"Moral Conscience", in mild contrast to "I Wish You Roses", is a cautionary tale of karma hunting down an ex-lover who hurt her. Even still, there's more of an air that she's simply warning the wrongful party here - it's not a threat, she's just stating a fact about how the world works (as she sees it anyway). Still keeping it classy. Musically, this is thick and fleecy, lounging languidly in a boudoir sofette with low humming synths.
"Deserve Me" is an elegant and drip-droppy hip hop soul duet with Summer Walker, who is now officially my new favourite random feature after previously popping up on last year's Kendrick Lamar record. Very killer refrain on this cut, almost as addictive as the track that follows it. Speaking of which...
"Moonlight" was quite possibly my SOTY for 2023. A lot can be said for how erotic round shapes are for basically all genders and sexual preferences, and I don't know how to explain this but the song simply sounds ROUND in every possible way. The funk bass is so bubbly and horny and sopping wet that it's probably illegal in many parts of the world. Kali is giving it her ALL on those verses. Absolutely luxurious production. The chorus has that subtle air of mystery that really ensnares the erotic imagination. I can't even remember the last time I heard a song that positively oozed sex like this, while also describing such a clearly healthy relationship. Is it possible to be getting drunk off of flowery bubble bath fumes? Because this is precisely what it would feel like. Interstellar spa getaway for two in the neon pink galaxy of Aphrodite. Perfect fucking song. A++ goddamn.
I could say a few words as to how this is a back-loaded record, but I think y'all have heard me call something front or back loaded at least a dozen times and I'm struggling to find original ways to express this sentiment. Either way, this is a milder case - more just that the second half is so consistently brilliant that it kinda blows the first half out of the water, particularly that early-mid section. The weakest moments here are the least imaginative ones.
But a very good chunk of this record is just pure gold. Red Moon In Venus is a vibrant and aesthetically immaculate R&B record, possibly the best of the new decade thus far.
As I publish this review, Kali has already dropped another album in the first few weeks of 2024 and it sounds almost as good as this one. I don't know how exactly she's doing it but she makes exploring a variety of genres and killing it at every one of them look so easy. Kali Uchis is the queen of her medium right now.
9/10

First on CNN: Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ tour could break $2 billion in North American ticket sales alone
Taylor Swift’s era-defining “Eras” tour is flying like a jet stream, high above the music scene — by billions of dollars.
The tour could gross $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales alone, according to August survey data from research firm QuestionPro provided to CNN exclusively. That unprecedented total represents primary ticket sales for the US shows that Swift just concluded in Los Angeles, plus a second North American leg coming next year.
The estimated totals are the latest example of the incredible demand for entertainment and experiences that has helped boost the economy, and more specifically, is a staggering show of Swift’s star power and influence on local US economies.
The average price of pre-sale and first sale tickets was $455.78, and Swift has 68 shows total in North America. The survey did not take into account whether respondents bought one ticket or multiple tickets.
The average attendance per show was 72,459, accounting for closed off areas and floor seats, according to QuestionPro data.
That comes to $2.2 billion — and that would make “Eras” the highest-grossing tour ever. Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour was the previous record holder, grossing over $887 million from 2018 to 2023, according to Larry Miller, director of the music business program at New York University Steinhardt.
“We’re talking about a global pop artist who faces virtually infinite demand for those tickets,” said Miller of Swift.
“Eras” has become one of the biggest social events of the year, with concertgoers doling out thousands of dollars on tickets, outfits, transportation and travel accommodations. Concertgoers participating in a QuestionPro poll of 862 people who say they attended at least one “Eras” concert said they spent an average of $291.62 each on their outfits, $214.80 on merchandise and $131.48 for food and drinks.
‘An economic phenomenon’
“Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ tour is rewriting the playbook of entertainment economics,” said Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek. “She’s not just a performer — she’s an economic phenomenon.”
The average resale price of an “Eras” ticket was $1,607, SeatGeek told CNN. That’s up 741% from her “Reputation” tour in 2018, during which the average resale ticket price was $191.
A representative for Swift did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment.
Swift finished her last US “Eras” show of this year in Los Angeles in August — but not without adding international tour dates, another North American leg of the tour, announcing re-recordings of her albums “1989” and “Speak Now” and releasing the latter album. She kicks off the Latin American leg of her tour later this month.
So far, the economic impact of Swift’s blockbuster tour has been wide-ranging.
Earlier this month, truckers for the tour were given $100,000 checks each, which one trucking company head called “life-changing.”
Food banks across the country in the communities where she has performed have said they received hefty donations from Swift, allowing pantries to replenish their inventories. One food bank network in Arizona said Swift’s donation allowed it to send several tractor-trailers filled with 40,000 pounds of fresh produce to its member food banks.
“Taylor Swift’s donation certainly helped at a time when we’re seeing the need climb and climb and climb,” Terri Shoemaker, a spokesperson at Arizona Food Bank Network, told CNN.
Retailers have also seen a boost from concertgoers looking for clothes that match the theme of Swift’s “eras.” Shops are marketing outfits featuring everything from sundresses and metallic boots to romantic, breezy long dresses and daring red gowns to Swifites shopping for concert looks.
Swift even earned a nod in the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, a collection of survey responses from businesses around the country. According to one business, “May was the strongest month for hotel revenue in Philadelphia since the onset of the pandemic, in large part due to an influx of guests for the Taylor Swift concerts in the city,” Fed officials wrote.
Swift kicked off the highly-anticipated “Eras” — her first tour since her “Reputation” stadium tour in 2018 — in March. The show features an expansive, roughly three-hour long set list that spans 14 years of her career.
The Ticketmaster meltdown
Hell was the journey for Swifties who sought tickets, though it brought those who secured them heaven. The heavy demand snarled Ticketmaster’s website last November, when pre-sale tickets first went live, leaving some verified fans locked out even with access codes. That spurred some Swifties to file a lawsuit against Ticketmaster and lawmakers to grill a top executive from parent-company Live Nation Entertainment during a three-hour hearing.
Ticketmaster did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment.
Fans who couldn’t secure tickets weren’t deterred from heading to concert venue parking lots to listen from there, according to data analytics platform Placer.ai.
During the three nights of the tour’s stop in Nashville, Tennessee, about 33% of the Nissan Stadium’s total crowd during the concerts stood outside the venue in parking lots to tailgate. Groups also gathered at stops in Philadelphia and Arlington, Texas.
“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Ethan Chernofsky, senior vice president of marketing at Placer.ai, noting that the phenomenon is reminiscent of die-hard sports fans tailgating outside stadiums. “That’s just not concert behavior.”
Swift’s tour is slated to conclude in late 2024, provided she doesn’t extend the tour yet again. Miller says that while it’s tough to imagine another musical artist beating her “Eras” record, it’s not impossible to see Swift topping it herself.
“When it comes to Taylor, I’ve learned to never say never,” he said.
ts1989fanatic holy shit potentially 2.2 BILLION just from North America, what the fuck does it look like when you add in the rest of the International dates.
She’s setting the bar so high others are going to need jet packs to clear it.

Portrait of Brasilian born🇧🇷 Laura @_laurabary Second installment of an ongoing collaboration with Meryll Rogge celebrating Latin American beauty. The genesis of a collaboration between Meryll Rogge and Hans Neumann originated at the time they met back in New York in 2008 when both were still pursuing their careers and finding their own voices. For this second installment Neumann wanted to capture very straight forward portraits of the Latin America community in Paris as a homage to Thomas Ruff against minimal backgrounds mixed with stills of them captured in movement/medium of transport as an analogy to displacement that occurs within the Latin Community. Hans Neumann is a visual artist born in Peru. Based in New York and Europe since 2003. His first book 'Nuevo New York' published by Damiani in 2018, portrays artists and talent from Latin America that now have roots in New York. That same year, as a response to Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric he started a book project called 'Ensayo', that focuses on his study of the ideas of identity, home and community. There are 6 volumes to date and more to come. They joined forces with Esther Matilla for styling and Alejandra Perez for casting. Esther Matilla is a New York / Paris - based stylist, fashion consultant and creative director, originally from Spain. She is responsible for styling a vast portfolio of editorial and campaign work and elevating it to hold the same self-possessed charm. Her styling draws from a range of aesthetics and influences to help create looks that run the spectrum from buttoned-up glamour through to elegantly wasted. @meryllrogge Styled by @esthermatillaoubina Casting by @cross_bone_ Thanks @cadenceimage @caroleguenebeaud @gaiageneston @romainnougaret @lalalanier_ and the amazing @zoepbl https://www.instagram.com/p/CmE9HWDOsRV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
