I've been having this thought about Alkaline and the process of alkaline hydrolysis/aquamation (aquamation -> cremation -> funeral pyre?? (all the burial/earth imagery in the eps*) brain please I'm busy) and had the thought in the shower of wondering what the pH of the human body is and now it's taking over my brain and I can't tell if this is too far of a reach because I'm on the verge of doing a whole write up about this topic too.

(Summary: Alkaline possibly referring/being a metaphor for/about about a process called alkaline hydrolysis, which is used as an alternative to cremation and uses water and a strong alkaline solution (lye) to rapidly decompose a body in a matter of hours. The human body's pH is around 7, which is also the track number of the song Alkaline, and also the line "neither acid nor alkaline" would put the subject of the song at pH 7 as well. Which would make The POV Vessel sings from the lye solution)

donovan desmond. regardless of whether his role in government is "in the right", he still prioritises his aims over his family. both damian and demetrius have estranged relationships with him and I don't even know where to start with whatever is going on with melinda.

handler. lost her own family and this forms part of her current motivation towards heading off war. but it's shown that her personal life is in tatters. that she's only living for her job with nothing at home for her anymore. it's unhealthy for her, but the connection with her new dog is a start.

twilight. increasingly at odds between "his mission" and his family. and yet, the whole reason for his mission is to protect the smiles of children. to make it so that they don't have to experience what he did. if he completes his mission and then leaves, he's still inflicting that same heartache onto his family.

at the same time. twilight's mantra that "ignorance is sin" comes from the right place. if tensions are ignored. if people aren't actively leveraging the information they can obtain. that's how war happens.

all the adult characters have experienced war in some capacity and they recognise the pain and suffering it can cause. that's why they work so hard to avert it. but they have to be careful that they don't echo that conflict down onto their own personal lives and younger generations. that they aren't so held back by the spectre of war that they forget to live for themselves.

i cant help but wonder if john is going to use his newfound projection abilities to save arthur next episode??? like we have only seen him use it the once, and while that was rlly draining on arthur's body, he was also kind of mirroring the kiy. i do think it would be interesting narratively if john Did have this ability but couldnt use it without the threat of mutual destruction (arthur's life and john's humanity) HOWEVER it would be fascinating if john, fuelled by much more selfless reasons than a power grab or protecting just himself, was able to project in some manner to help. because god knows an evil knife to the chest is NOT within your average medieval english barber-dentist-doctor's skillset

Do you remember when subbers used to get "fancy"? I remember watching a Naruto Fansub and when he used Rasengan the subtitles swelled when he called the attack name. And at least one time they spun too. Some people are just that extra.

It's basically a meme to poke fun at fansubs now, but at the end of the day, while encompassing pretty much the entire spectrum of competence, amateur teams are definitionally going to give more of a shit than professionals actually being compensated for their time. Anyway I had to track down and download the old Lunar fansubs of Ouran because I tried to watch the Funimation ones once and had an allergic reaction to them not matching the fonts of the text on the screen.

...Just opening the episode at the top of the folder to a random point to grab the first decent examples I ran into I was decadently coddled by the subbing team approximately once every three seconds. Why would I NOT want to live like this. EVERYTHING labeled is captioned next to where the text actually is on the screen in the same color and a font with the same vibe as long as there's space to do that legibly. Twists at the ends of sentences with pointed pauses in them fill in when the characters actually say them so you can't read ahead and lose the comedic/dramatic timing. The opening theme has a translation of the lyrics AND a phonetic transliteration, AND the transliteration fills in to full visibility as each syllable is reached like a sing-along video to make it easier to follow along--which wasn't even weird! That was sort of industry standard before faster official releases started outmoding fansubs, except I'm not sure if you can technically call free guerilla translations made by volunteers an industry!

You also got plenty of Millennium Tin Sticks, but it's not like I can watch twenty consecutive minutes of subtitled TV through friends' Crunchyroll subscriptions without hitting at least one moment of "lmao WHY", except those don't even make good memes. They just make me either vaguely concerned about worker conditions or disappointed depending on what flavor of stupid they represent.

“Commander Kaeya.”

The voice rings through the emptying hallway, slicing through the chatter of the departing Knights.

Kaeya startles, tries to pretend he didn’t startle, pastes a rather flimsy smile on his face, and turns finally to see Commander Frederica striding towards him. “Commander! To what do I owe the pleasure?”

The Commander comes to a stop in front of him, feet apart and hands clasped behind her back as if in parade rest. Being slightly shorter than him, she has to look up to meet his eye, but that doesn’t stop him from feeling as if he’s being measured and found wanting. 

“I hear you changed your name,” she says.

Word travels fast, then. He shouldn’t be surprised; Varka has always tended to share news with Commander Frederica before anyone else. “That’s correct, sir.”

“You know we occupy the same rank. You don’t have to call me sir anymore.” Before Kaeya can respond, she continues: “I’m curious about your reasoning behind the change.”

Kaeya swallows. The smile on his face is rapidly starting to feel like a grimace. “I’m simply not a Ragnvindr anymore, sir.”

“Legally, as far as I understand, you maintain the rights to the surname nonetheless.”

“Far be it from me to keep the name of a man who disowned me,” Kaeya says.

He regrets his honesty when something clicks behind the Commander’s eyes. “I see,” is all she says.

He laughs, trying to regain his light insouciance. “I’m aware I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. It’s just a name, after all.”

She shakes her head shortly. “It’s never just a name,” she says, like a true Gunnhildr. “And Alberich was your surname before you were a Ragnvindr, I gather?” 

She pronounces it wrong: the first syllable too wide, like in “Albert,” the last syllable too much like she’s calling him affluent. He winces — just the tiniest twitch of his features, but she must notice, because she leans back and draws herself up.

“I assume from your reaction that I’m saying it wrong,” she says, impassive.

“You can say it however you want, sir,” he says, smoothing his features back into place. “It doesn’t matter.”

She sighs. “I seem to recall telling you a moment ago that names matter, Commander. I’d like to hear how you pronounce it.”

Piercing blue eyes pin him in place, so much like her daughters’ and yet so different. Kaeya feels caught under their singular focus. “I— I pronounce it Alberich, sir,” he says, pushing the first syllable towards the front of his mouth and letting the -ch sound rest against his palate instead of between his front teeth. The way he says it, it’s quite obvious that it’s not a name from around these parts; that fact can’t have escaped her. “But honestly, it’s not that important—”

“Alberich,” she tries, cutting him off. This time is much closer, but not quite there; her Mondstadtian tongue struggles with the rounded syllables and harsh consonants. She narrows her eyes and tries again. “Alberich.”

It’s strange to hear someone else say his surname aloud for the first time in a decade. “Alberich,” he says again, attempting to be helpful.

“Alberich.”

“Alberich.”

“Alberich.”

This last try hits the mark — he can feel the rightness of it sink into his bones. Commander Frederica’s sharp eyes catch his reaction and she smiles ever so slightly. “Better?” she asks.

“Better, sir,” he says, and can’t quite keep himself from smiling back.

She nods decisively. “That’s all I wanted from you, Commander. Thank you for indulging me.”

“My pleasure, Commander,” he returns. “Thank you for” — everything, he doesn’t say; for being the first person to say my name in a decade, for being the first person to care — “checking in.”

She smiles, takes a step back — but just as he thinks she’s going to turn away, she brings her fist to her chest and then to her side, palm flat, in the traditional Favonian salute. “I’m honoured to work with you, Commander Alberich.”

The quiet sincerity of the gesture makes his throat feel tight. It takes him a moment to compose himself. He returns the salute, and the touch of his fist to his chest sparks something bright and tender under his ribs. “And I you, Commander Gunnhildr.”
