Sir Salman Rushdie has attacked the rewriting of Roald Dahl books as "absurd censorship" at the hands of “bowdlerising sensitivity police”.

In new editions of Roald Dahl’s beloved stories, Augustus Gloop is no longer fat, Mrs Twit is no longer fearfully ugly, and the Oompa-Loompas have gone gender-neutral.

The publisher, Puffin, has made hundreds of changes to the original text, removing many of Dahl’s classic, timeless and colourful descriptions and making his characters less grotesque.

Sensitivity readers were brought in to review Dahl’s language so the books “can continue to be enjoyed by all today”, Puffin said.

Sir Salman, who as author of The Satanic Verses has been a pioneer of free enquiry and lived under constant threats to his life, became the most high-profile person in the literary world to condemn the decision on Sunday.

He wrote on Twitter: "Roald Dahl was no angel but this is absurd censorship. Puffin Books and the Dahl estate should be ashamed."

Sir Salman later tweeted in response to a critic: "He was a self confessed antisemite, with pronounced racist leanings, and he joined in the attack on me back in 1989… but thanks for telling me off for defending his work from the bowdlerizing Sensitivity Police."

Sir Salman, was stabbed more than a dozen times on stage last August at a literary festival at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state, leaving him blind in one eye. After writing The Satanic Verses, Iran issued a fatwa death sentence for "blasphemy" and his book was banned in 45 Islamic countries.

Other literary figures also rounded on the changes.

Comedian David Baddiel posted a screenshot of one of the changes to a passage in The Twits that removes the words "double chin", adding: "The problem with the Dahl bowdlerisation is it has no logical consistency.

"Here, double chin has been cut, presumably to avoid fat shaming. But what about wonky nose or crooked teeth shaming? Once you start on this path you can end up with blank pages."

Meanwhile, Suzanne Nossel, the CEO of literature and human rights organisation PEN America, said she was "alarmed" at the changes, which "could represent a dangerous new weapon".

“The problem with taking license to re-edit classic works is that there is no limiting principle," she tweeted.

“You start out wanting to replace a word here and a word there, and end up inserting entirely new ideas (as has been done to Dahl’s work).

"Literature is meant to be surprising and provocative. That's part of its potency. By setting out to remove any reference that might cause offense you dilute the power of storytelling."

Katharine Birbalsingh, a headteacher and Britain's former social mobility commissioner, added of the changes: "How is this even legal?"

The Telegraph revealed last week how hundreds of changes have been made to updated prints of Dahl's stories, bringing them into line with contemporary sensitivities, with words and phrases on weight, mental health, violence, gender and race expunged.

The word “fat” has been removed from every book - Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory may still look like a ball of dough, but can now only be described as “enormous”.

In the same story, the Oompa-Loompas are no longer “tiny”, “titchy” or “no higher than my knee” but merely small. And where once they were “small men”, they are now “small people”.

The words “black” and “white” have been removed: characters no longer turn “white with fear” and the Big Friendly Giant in The BFG cannot wear a black cloak.

In previous editions of James and the Giant Peach, the Centipede sings: “Aunt Sponge was terrifically fat/And tremendously flabby at that,” and, “Aunt Spiker was thin as a wire/And dry as a bone, only drier.”

Both verses have been removed, and in their place are the underwhelming rhymes: “Aunt Sponge was a nasty old brute/And deserved to be squashed by the fruit,” and, “Aunt Spiker was much of the same/And deserves half of the blame.”

In a section of The Witches, another reference to a "double chin" has been removed.

Prof Frank Furedi, an expert in the sociology of fear at the University of Kent, told The Telegraph: "What we have here is a knee-jerk cleansing of the literature of the past and they are turning works of literature into recipe books for their own wokeish values.

"This is only the beginning because the role of sensitivity readers is expanding all the time.

"Whereas they were initially hired to read new books submitted to them, now they're going back through the literature of the past almost as grievance archaeologists, trying to unearth words that might offend them."

Dahl died in 1990 and his family subsequently apologised for anti-Semitic remarks during his lifetime, but he is still regarded as one of the world's best storytellers.

LONDON (AP) — Publisher Penguin Random House announced Friday it will publish “classic” unexpurgated versions of Roald Dahl’s children’s novels after it received criticism for cuts and rewrites that were intended to make the books suitable for modern readers.

Along with the new editions, the company said 17 of Dahl’s books would be published in their original form later this year as “The Roald Dahl Classic Collection” so “readers will be free to choose which version of Dahl’s stories they prefer.”

The move comes after criticism of scores of changes made to “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and other much-loved classics for recent editions published under the company’s Puffin children’s label, in which passages relating to weight, mental health, gender and race were altered.

Augustus Gloop, Charlie’s gluttonous antagonist in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” — originally published in 1964 — became “enormous” rather than “enormously fat.” In “Witches,” an “old hag” became an “old crow,” and a supernatural female posing as an ordinary woman may be a “top scientist or running a business” instead of a “cashier in a supermarket or typing letters for a businessman.”

In “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” the word “black” was removed from a description of the “murderous, brutal-looking” tractors.

The Roald Dahl Story Company, which controls the rights to the books, said it had worked with Puffin to review and revise the texts because it wanted to ensure that “Dahl’s wonderful stories and characters continue to be enjoyed by all children today.”

While tweaking old books for modern sensibilities is not a new phenomenon in publishing, the scale of the edits drew strong criticism from free-speech groups such as writers’ organization PEN America, and from authors including Salman Rushdie.

Rushdie, who lived under threat of death from Iran’s Islamic regime for years because of the alleged blasphemy of his novel “The Satanic Verses,” called the revisions “absurd censorship.”

Rushdie, who was attacked and seriously injured last year at an event in New York state, tweeted news of Penguin’s change of heart on Friday with the words “Penguin Books back down after Roald Dahl backlash!”

PEN America chief executive Suzanne Nossel wrote on Twitter: “I applaud Penguin for hearing out critics, taking the time to rethink this, and coming to the right place.”

Camilla, Britain’s queen consort, appeared to offer her view at a literary reception on Thursday. She urged writers to “remain true to your calling, unimpeded by those who may wish to curb the freedom of your expression or impose limits on your imagination.”

Dahl’s books, with their mischievous children, strange beasts and often beastly adults, have sold more than 300 million copies and continue to be read by children around the world. Their multiple stage and screen adaptations include “Matilda the Musical” and two “Willy Wonka” films based on “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” with a third in the works.

But Dahl, who died in 1990, is also a controversial figure because of antisemitic comments made throughout his life. His family apologized in 2020.

In 2021, Dahl’s estate sold the rights to the books to Netflix, which plans to produce a new generation of films based on the stories.

Francesca Dow, managing director of Penguin Random House Children’s, said the publisher had “listened to the debate over the past week which has reaffirmed the extraordinary power of Roald Dahl’s books and the very real questions around how stories from another era can be kept relevant for each new generation.”

“Roald Dahl’s fantastic books are often the first stories young children will read independently, and taking care for the imaginations and fast-developing minds of young readers is both a privilege and a responsibility,” she said.

“We also recognize the importance of keeping Dahl’s classic texts in print,” Dow said. “By making both Puffin and Penguin versions available, we are offering readers the choice to decide how they experience Roald Dahl’s magical, marvelous stories.”

There's a couple of lessons here.

Firstly, if you're a creator, stay true to your vision. While certainly there's such a thing as valid criticism and feedback, it is clear that there are people whose main objective and complaint is that you should be reproducing their vision, and are more than willing to pretend it's a moral failing on your behalf not to do so.

It's also true that humans are more likely to voice their complaint or opposition than to voice their approval or agreement. But the shrill moralizing, tut-tutting puritans while loud, are not the majority. Time and again we find that any significant pushback results in a backdown from the ruling class who have made the mistake of taking the counsel of the puritans.

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals comes out July 12. This Night School Studio sequel comes out 7 years after the first; their last major game was After Party in 2019. Btw, they were acquired by Netflix in 2021.

I thought Oxenfree had a great creepy story and aesthetic - however, After Party was a big disappointment for me. So I'm cautiously interested in the sequel.

Having been left without LMK season 4 content for the longest while I ended up rewatching both ‘the lego movie’s’ a few nights back and got sucked into the world enough to go looking for content. Specifically fic's!

He'd always brushed it off, but after the Systarians showed up, and Apocalypseburg was formed things got worse. After 5 years in Apocalypseburg Emmet decides that he's tired of being treated like garbage. However, nobody is ever going to respect Emmet for how he actually is, but…

Maybe they'll respect Rex.

(This fic is pretty good, the pacing is on par with the movie in some parts, and some of the character’s are a lil one sided, but overall I like the concept and I’m looking forward to seeing the writer improve the more they write!)

Summary: It had never been Emmet's intention for Rex to die, and he sorta wished he could come back. Well two weeks later Rex does, but in one of the worst ways possible. God I'm so bad at summaries, but it's another fic where Emmet and Rex are sharing a body like Good cop/ Bad cop.

(Another interesting concept! I really like the way they wrote Emmet in this one, he and Rex kind of are at odds with one another but I feel Rex is sort of starting to bring out the Rex in Emmet the longer they’re together. There are some pretty intense scenes, and the pacing is a bit better than the fic above they also wrote. Definitely a good read.)

Summary: The Sistar aliens weren't asking for much, just one little thing and then they would leave the citizens alone. Surely they wouldn't miss him. After all, wasn't he everything they'd come to hate?

(This one was one I’d been looking for after I saw the movies. I'm so glad someone had the same idea and enough momentum to put it into a story! The pacing is good, and the character’s are on point too! The plot is also very well done and the motives for all the characters and how they carry them out mimic the second movie in its own way. 10/10!)

After Taco Tuesday, Good Cop is alone and deals with the consequences.

Or: Bad Cop dies instead of Good Cop, and Good Cop copes, as best as he can. Everyone else slowly learns that Good Cop isn't exactly who they thought he was.

(This fic was…WOOF, a doozy to go through. Not saying it’s bad, not by any means! If anything it’s TOO good for the concepts it explores. Because the concepts themselves are PRETTY HEAVY. And if you are going through a tough time, miiiight wanna hold off reading this one. But the plot / pacing / character’s are all on point and well thought out. The way they explore Good Cop’s character is really something, and the ending left me in tears </3)

Meta: Oli, Michael and Louis all got tattoos backstage before/after the show (video here). Not sure if they all got that phrase, but it does sound like something you'd say before going on stage. *Ryan Rogers aka. Hellhabits (who sometimes tattooed at The London Social in London as well) stopped tattooing in Sep 2024 and is now a musician. His project is called Saint Michael 1966.

My (Paz') own thoughts: I do find it deeply significant that as soon as the hiatus (aka: a potential way into freedom) started, Harry and Louis -compared to the time during the band- slowed down to an almost glacier pace when it comes to getting tattoos. Harry got 84% of all his 67 tattoos within 3,5 years in the band. Louis even got 85% of all his 46 tattoos within 3 years in the band. And then he got zero tattoos for 2 years into the hiatus.*

Harry got 56 tattoos between early 2012 and the end of 2015. He got 11 tattoos within the next 9 years, until today, Feb 2025.*

Louis got 39 tattoos between late 2012 and the end of 2015. He got 7 tattoos within the next 9 years, until today, Feb 2025.* (*that we know of)

It clearly shows what a beautiful and powerful way to express themselves to the world it was for them; as individuals, but also deeply bonded and visually belonging together. A quiet, visual rebellion; their skin constantly speaking the words they couldn't say.

Cover Ups: Firstly, it's noteworthy that Louis has not covered up any tattoo of his. Harry covered up 5 of his tattoos and it's most important which ones and from what year - (here is a post with pictures) All 5 of the tattoos Harry had covered up were from 2012 - a time where the iron closet started to have a tight grip on Louis and him. All 5 tattoos were written phrases that could possibly be connected to his sexuality or relationship. Summary: 1) the "LOVE banner" -- covered with 2 swallows that resemble Lou & him 2) "I can't change..." -- covered with an anchor, matching Louis' pre-existing rope 3) "Might as well..." -- covered with laurels; laurels often symbolize victory 4) "Things I can't" -- covered by a Holy Bible (I Can't: Holy Bible?) 5) "Things I can" -- covered by an Eagle (I Can: Freedom?)] Since the start of the hiatus in 2015, Harry has not covered up a single tattoo in 9 years. Harry & Louis have at least 6 beautifully obvious matching tattoos: Oops + Hi Rope + Anchor Ship + Compass Butterfly + It Is What It Is Anatomical Heart + Arrow Rose + Dagger

This is organized by date. All tattoos are linked to photos, unless they are major tattoos I want to talk about, in which case I have inserted the photos into the post. (Special thanks to thelegohouselove and their wonderful tattoo masterposts with pictures)

Dates are dates I believe they actually got the tattoos. If I can’t find a date they got the tattoo, I have indicated it with a “*” which is the first date we saw the tattoo. 

Before we begin, fun facts that might blow your mind:

Harry has 56 tattoos that we know of.

Louis 38 tattoos that we know of. 

Harry got 30 of his 56 tattoos between June and October 2012. That’s, on average, about 8/month.

Louis got 10 of his 37 between October and December 2012. That’s, on average, about 5/month.

The most Harry ever got on one day is 4. He got 13 in a 7 day period in October 2012. The most Louis ever got on one day was 5 on February 25 of 2013.

Over all, this should give you a good idea of just how much the tattoos seem to be an outlet during highly-closeted and stressful times (Harry’s June-October spree that gave way to the birds, ship & compass and butterfly and Louis’ October-December Haylor spree), not only in date alone, but also in the subject of the tattoo.

For followers of the gender medicine debate in Queensland Australia, January 2025 has been a wild ride. With highs and lows already, we look forward to an eventful year. One thing is certain, this issue is not going away.

Jan 4, am: The Courier Mail in Queensland reported that the new Liberal-National government would be moving ahead to implement all 25 recommendations of the evaluation report on the Queensland Children’s Gender Service (QCGS) released in 2024. The report recommended an expansion of services state-wide, public-private partnerships to deliver services, and the previous Labor government had committed to a doubling of funding.

Jan 4, pm: In the afternoon, The Courier Mail article was amended to tell a completely different story with a new headline: Queensland Children’s Gender Service recommendations to be reviewed. Implementation was not now guaranteed, and the Minister for Health raised the possibility of ‘another review into the affirmative care model’.

Jan 5: The Qld Deputy Premier, Jarrod Bleijie and Health Minister Tim Nicholls appeared in a video posted on Facebook to state that ‘we do not support the expansion of gender services for children in Queensland’ and that they remained concerned about the use of puberty blockers in light of information that is coming in from around the world.

Jan 28: The Courier Mail ran a front page article titled CHILDREN’S GENDER SCANDAL with the online article heading being ”Rogue” gender clinics giving Qld kids puberty blockers without parental consent. The Minister stated that ‘The Cairns Sexual Health Service delivered an apparently unauthorised pediatric gender service without an agreed model of care to 42 pediatric gender service clients, 17 of whom were prescribed stage one or stage two hormone therapy in a way that may not align with treatment guidelines.’ Media reported that a whistle blower had come forward.

Jan 28: The Qld Health Department released a Health Service Directive pausing all new prescriptions of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to those under 18. A number of reviews were announced: a clinical review and a health service review into the events in Cairns paediatric gender treatment, as well as ‘an independently led broad review of the evidence for Stage 1 and Stage 2 hormone therapies for children in Queensland.’ This is intended to be a ‘robust investigation of best practice in this field’.

Jan 31: The Federal Health Minister released a media statement to say that after taking advice from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Therapeutic Goods Administration he had asked the NHMRC ‘to undertake a comprehensive review of the Australian Standards of Care and Treatment Guidelines for Trans and Gender Diverse Children and Adolescents…and to develop new national guidelines.’ The guidelines are to be developed according to NHMRC Standards and the international GRADE approach to assessing evidence. (We assume that the involvement of the TGA is in response to the fact that puberty blockers are prescribed off-label in Australia, as the TGA has not approved them for treating gender dysphoria.)

At a press conference the same day, Minister Butler noted that the Australian Professional Association for Transgender Health (AusPATH) [whose members drafted the original guidelines] and Transcend, an LGBT+ support group representing families, had indicated last year that they thought the [AusPATH] guidelines needed updating. (Notably the guidelines were updated in 2023, without inclusion of any new published research post 2018. The update added two paragraphs addressing hormone provision by GPs outside of multidisciplinary hospital-based teams.)

The Minister also said that he had indicated to the Queensland Government that he did not think it would be appropriate for Queensland to continue its own evidence review given that a national approach was needed and the NHMRC was the pre-eminent body. Mr Butler reported that the NHMRC described evidence in the area as ‘contested and evolving’.

And that was just January.

Genspect Australia commends the Queensland halt on children’s gender medicine

Genspect Australia welcomes today’s announcement by the Queensland Health Minister, Mr Tim Nicholls that puberty blocker and hormonal treatments of children with gender-related distress will be paused pending an independent review of the evidence for these treatments.

“This is good news that will protect Queensland children from irreversible medical harm, whilst the evidence for use of these drugs is re-examined. The 2024 NHS England Cass Review found that the ‘gender affirming’ model of treatment, as used in Queensland, rests on shaky foundations,” said Ms Judith Hunter, Genspect spokesperson.

Genspect Australia is a coalition of clinicians and parents promoting a non-medicalised path of treatment for gender-questioning young people.

Revelations of possible medical malpractice in prescription of blockers or hormones to children in the Cairns Sexual Health clinic precipitated the action by the Minister.

“Action has been taken because of events in Cairns, but the practices at the Queensland Children’s Gender Service (QCGS) in Brisbane have been similarly concerning”, said Ms Hunter.

A review of the QCGS in 2024 found that the clinic follows the “Australian Standards of Care” for treatment of children and adolescents with gender dysphoria, but according to Ms Hunter it missed the more fundamental point that the standards are not fit for purpose.

The Australian Standards of Care did not meet the standard required for consideration by the National Health and Medical Research Council, and received a failing grade for adherence to evidence in a 2024 review of international guidelines.

“It is deeply concerning that Queensland children are being treated with life-changing hormones under a protocol that fails basic quality controls,” said Ms Hunter.

Dr Jillian Spencer, a whistle-blowing child psychiatrist currently suspended from duty in Queensland Health for speaking out about her concerns on the practices at the QCGS, concurs. “It is bizarre that within the course of a decade, a radical treatment with cross-sex hormones that turns physically healthy children into medical patients for life became so widely accepted that clinicians are threatened with deregistration if they do not comply.

“Most of the children and young people presenting to gender clinics have complex mental health problems, autism, a history of trauma including sexual assault, or are just same sex-attracted and confused by their developing sexuality. Responsible medical practice should prioritise exploration of the origin of gender-related distress and focus on helping the child become comfortable in their body,” said Dr Spencer.

Dr Spencer welcomed the minister’s announcement. “This should give the many clinicians who are concerned for child safety the courage to speak up.”

The announcement has also been widely welcomed on social media by detransitioners and parents who question the safety of medicalisation for gender distress and advocate for less invasive treatments, such as psychotherapy.

“We frequently hear that treatment should be a medical discussion between families and doctors, not politicians, however treatment choices other than ‘affirming’ medicalisation have been discouraged and families have been shamed for asking questions” said a Genspect parent member who wished to remain anonymous. “We feel vindicated in our concerns”.

Genspect Australia is pleased that the self-appointed ‘Australian Standards of Care and Treatment Guidelines for Trans and Gender Diverse Children and Adolescents’ are being reviewed and replaced, but cautions that the integrity of any new guideline rests on the appropriate selection of review panel members.

Genspect Australia is a coalition of clinicians and parents promoting non-medicalised and evidence-based care for children and young people with gender-related distress.

The Health Minister Mark Butler announced the guideline review today, and mentioned a key role for the Australian Professional Association of Transgender Health (AusPATH) in its initiation. “This rings alarm bells given the nature of AusPATH as an activist-led organisation that promotes radical ‘gender-affirming’ treatment as the only allowable path,” said Genspect spokesperson Judith Hunter.

The existing ‘Standards’ document was written by AusPATH members at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and endorsed by the AusPATH board. In a published review of international guidelines commissioned by the NHS England Cass Review, the ‘Australian Standards’ was given a grade of only 19% for rigour of development which includes adherence to an evidence base, and the Minister today acknowledged that it was not NHMRC-approved.

The ‘Australian Standards’ document promotes immediate ‘affirmation’ of a gender-questioning child with a new name and pronouns, followed by puberty blockers if early in puberty, cross-sex hormones, and possible later surgery. This approach is now highly contested globally, with many countries taking a more neutral approach in recent years and prioritising psychological treatments.

“Irreversible sex-trait modification initiated when children are as young as 10 years old is an irresponsible and bizarre treatment for a condition that was unheard of 20 years ago”, said Ms Hunter. “We are witnessing an epidemic of transgender identification that occurs in clusters and peer groups and is undoubtedly driven by social contagion. To treat a transient identity in adolescence with irreversible and radical body modification defies the ‘do no harm’ principle in medicine. Review of these practices is way overdue.”

Genspect Australia is concerned about the timeline proposed for the review with interim conclusions expected on puberty blockers in mid-2026. “The UK has already looked at the evidence on puberty blockers and stopped prescription. Children are being harmed right now, with treatments that lead to sterility, loss of sexual function, and a myriad of long-term health problems from incontinence to risk of stroke. All states need to follow Queensland with a pause in new prescriptions,” said Ms Hunter.

The announcement of the review comes only three days after the Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls imposed a pause on new puberty blocker and hormone treatments in Queensland in response to alleged malpractice in the Cairns Sexual Health Service, and also outlined a review of the evidence for gender affirmative treatments of minors.

There is no dispute that gender-distressed young people and their families deserve the highest quality care, and Genspect Australia looks forward to engaging with the review process to ensure this outcome. “It is essential that the experiences of both detransitioners, who have been harmed by gender medicalisation and parents who advocate for a cautious ‘watchful-waiting’ approach are considered,” said Ms Hunter.

As WPATH demonstrates, when activists get involved, you end up with lies about puberty blockers and hormones, chapters about "eunuch identity," removal of all age restrictions, and handwaving all the warning signs, all the concerns, all the doubts.
