Random thursday ramble because Im very sick and didn't have anything better to do, but here's my thoughts on how I think the fourth Trolls's movie could look like based on the trends the writers have been following so far. So we're either getting a more 50/50 story like the first film or going back to Poppy, likely giving her as much focus on her as TBT gave Branch (since to me, Branch's plotline during World Tour still took a sizable part of the story and he had bigger part on moving the main plot forward vs. Poppy on Band Together who, for the most part, was there mostly for moral support and her unique plotline only started midway through and wasn't even that relevant. Still love Viva tho)

My guesses on that front are that it will either be about her missing parent or a completely new thing (like the trolls tribes). Branch's plotline could be about their wedding proposal or even planning, but that could get very samey-samey with the second movie, so I don't cross out the possibility that, in TBT fashion, they just make up something for him do to in middle mark or he continues his narrative of bounding/repairing his relationship with his brothers (kinda unlikely, again, "barely-there continuity" and all that)

Another trend that we see in the franchise and I think is likely for us to see continuing is "side-character from previous film doubles in relevance and/or gets their own plotline" (Cooper and Tiny Diamond). While I want to say that my main guess would be Viva, specially considering the likelihood of the movie centering Poppy, or even one/all of the brothers, TD and Cooper weren't exactly amount the characters one would guess would gain relevancy in the next movie (ok, maybe Cooper because I love him and he's my son, but that is besides the point)

So my main suspect for that role is someone that we wouldn't see coming (hopefully NOT that mop-thing, whats-her-face? Krispy-Kremes?), but that's still in the movie more in a couple of scenes and likely a comic-relief like Cooper and TD, so probably one of Bruce's kids, Brandy or even Peppy (not that unlikely, unfortunately)

And last of we have something we can't know if it will be a trend or not until the fourth film releases, that is "protagonist from two movies ago returns and gains their own side-plot. We had that happen with those two bergens (dont hate them, Im just sick and cant be bothered to spend time trying to remember what they are called. Grizzly and Bridgette-something I think? Bridge? Idk) and hopefully that also happens with Barb. I not even including this last part because of how much of a Barb fan you are, but because I also genuinely want her back, I miss my silly little disaster lesbian every day

This is something I actually spent a whole afternoon researching: the difference in location between book Hiccup and movie Hiccup.

Book Hiccup: his Archipelago is around the western Iceland coast, in the Greenland sea. It’s not there irl, but I have several points that confirm my theory.

-the in-book cards. The mainland coast on there strongly resembles a part of the icelandic coast.

-Iceland was first inhabited by the vikings and their slaves. Yea, if you have read the books you probably understand that part.

-obvi. the faroer islands were the inspiration but. Y’know they’re just not as isolated

-On Iceland there were a lot of fishers and farmers which is also the case in the books; sum fishers and farmers were definitely around.

-there was a time where two families or tribes? were fighting for control on Iceland. In the books there are two tribes on the mainland. (rlly lazy points ik.)

-In how to train a dragon’s storm, a card shows that they sailed past a coast that is definitely Greenland. If they were near Scotland they would not have to sail there!

-Again lazy point, but I’m pretty sure that the wanderers are from Greenland. Also the last islands of the Archipelago are near that coast.

Movie Hiccup: Norway, the Norway sea, more specifically the island Biornoya. The island actually exist, the Archipelago not.

-Berk was probably modeled after Biornoya.

-Hiccup says “we have two weeks midnight sun.” The farthest point I could orient me from was Hammerfest, Norway, which has 13 days midnight sun. Biornoya seems farther north than Hammerfest, which could make possible that it might have two weeks of midnight sun.

-there are cards by dreamworks and a card used by Viggo that shows Norway nearby.

-Biornoya has history of viking inhabitants. (Now it’s uninhabited: the village on it was probably destroyed or abandoned in world war 2)

-In a comic it is called a viking outpost, which seems logical for it’s placement I guess?

I think that’s probably all of it, but I really love this. Especially for my AU because the I get to research slight differences between norse folk on Iceland and Norway and just let that play part in the story. I’m actually planning on letting a bit more historical and traditional aspects into it than in the original media, so I will have so. much. fun. I swear. Idk if they would have different accents and stuff, so I will have much to learn. But I definitely want to play around with it a bit.

I’m not hyped about the new fantastic four news either. though I think what I kind of hope will happen is marvel doing something like they did in the last mcu spider man movie where we see 3 peter parkers team up.

I think it would be super cool to see the cast from the 2005-2007 fantastic four movie meet with the ones from the newest movie. and have the 2005-2007 Doom (Julian McMahon) meet with the Doom from this upcoming fantastic four film too.

so we have more than one “fantastic four” team and also more than one Victor von Doom in the same movie. that would be pretty epic to see in my humble opinion. (if this really is the case, I still have hope that marvel won’t mess it up, because it sure has the potential to be great.)

I mean marvel did just very recently confirm that all the events prior to the mcu (so… sony’s spider man and fantastic four) are also canon to the mcu, and I doubt they would say that if they didn’t plan to do something with it (they said it after the event of the last spider man movie with 3 peter parkers), especially when mcu is heavily heading towards the direction of multiverse, various timelines, various variants of the same person (character) right now. I mean we basically have 3 peter parkers (from both sony and mcu) and literally a bunch of lokis. so let’s see what’ll happen next.

The only part of the casting I agree with is Ben. It feels like Marvel is playing it extremely safe with casting Pedro, like since Multiverse of Madness they've clearly been aiming for the "soft dad" angle with Reed, probably in an attempt to get ahead of possible complaints about him based on canon? I love Reed Richards to a fault, but he's always been a little bit of an asshole. Not intentionally, and much of that perceived assholeness stems from him being on the spectrum imo but it's there, and ignoring that does him as much a disservice as playing up Tony's alcoholism purely for laughs and then never mentioning it again was to that character--another thing the MCU has done.

The poster, the casting, idk. It radiates a nuclear-family blandness, with a camp overlay used purely for aesthetics that will probably be quite popular with general audiences and leave F4 fans from the comics and old movies and other sources of media quite cold. We are not the audience Marvel Studios wishes to court, they've made that very clear.

I'd love to be wrong about how this will play out, though. Pedro is a gifted character actor when he's allowed to be, the trouble is, studios know too well how much audiences love him as a person, and are too prone to mixing the two to improve audiences' appreciation of a character he's playing, rather than just letting the man cook. 😔

I don't have a firm opinion of the other cast other than: this will be the most money anyone named Kirby has ever made on Fantastic Four, so good on her. 👍 And the Ben casting feels right. I'm outside the Johnny demographic so no real opinion there.

I had read that the baddie for the first movie will be Galactus, which is like leading your football season with the Superbowl? But no one asked me, so... 😅 maybe they have a set up that will make that work, who can say.

I've also read (on reddit, so make of that what you will) that Doom will have a "cameo" in the first movie, but no clue what that means or even of it's true.

I like your idea a lot. I think the Deadpool & Wolverine movie will have a Fantastic Four cameo of some kind, probably. The comic book we see in the trailer next to Wade's head on the desert world is Secret Wars #5, which is a recap of the story so far and how everyone got to where they are--so it's possible the desert world they're all on is Battleworld, run either by future-verse Doom or (more likely) the Beyonder. I do think the movie will include them in some way bc the studio will want to start building hype for that as their next big project, going into the MCU version of Secret Wars.

And ofc SW will have crossovers galore, since Marvel Studios has unfortunately set audience expectations for that being what it's about 😅 so, worst case, they'll turn up between those two films no doubt.

I'd love to see Julian McMahon's Doom encounter a closer-to-comic-canon version, but a thing to know about Victor is that he kills every variant of himself he meets. Like, historically, that's just his thing (it's an expression of his own self-loathing, which is really tragic in a way) ...I dunno if the MCU will carry that fun little trait over, but as a writer I can say it's an easy, low-stakes way of showing "this character is a bad guy and also there is something very wrong with him" so... yanno. I am expecting it. 😁

Sorry for the negativity on this, I'm trying to stay upbeat about it all but so far they're not inspiring confidence yet. We'll see what future developments bring, if nothing else we'll always have fanart and fics and the comics themselves. It's not like this fandom hasn't dealt with bad adaptations before, I think we'll be alright whatever happens.

2025 Book Bingo TBR

Alright, I'll try to get through @batmanisagatewaydrug's 2025 book bingo next year, and I have made a list in preparation this time instead of just filling out squares as I go and then scrambling for the last fills at the end of the year.

Let's see if I can stick to it, and also fill the last empty spaces.

1. Literary Fiction: [to be decided]

I don’t currently have any on my TBR I realized, so we’ll see. Certainly keeping the recommendations of Raven Leilani’s Luster, Melissa Broder’s Milk Fed and Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar as options in here.

2. Short Story Collection: Mariana Enríquez: A Sunny Place for Shady People [org. title: Un lugar soleado para gente sombría]

A biiiit of a placeholder, maybe, taken from the reading updates of Mr Gatewaydrug; sounds interesting but idk if I’ll be able to actually get my hands on it.

3. A Sequel: Xiran Jay Zhao: Heavenly Tyrant / Luke Arnold: Whisper in the Wind

I hadn’t gotten the memo that the sequel to Iron Widow is coming out next year and now I’m excited! But we’re also getting #4 of Luke Arnold’s brilliant fantasy noir series next April, so I’ll probably get to that first. Can’t wait to find out what my boy Fetch will be up to now.

4. Childhood Favorite: Derek Landy: Skulduggery Pleasant / Peter Freund: Laura und das Geheimnis von Aventerra

I’ve been missing the old Skulduggery vibes for a while now, so I might revisit the first book. Or see how the Laura series holds up; I was pretty obsessed with that as a teen but haven’t touched it in almost fifteen years.

5. 20th Century Speculative Fiction: Diana Wynne Jones: Howls’ Moving Castle / Octavia Butler: Parable of the Sower

I’ve been meaning to read Howl for a while, maybe I’ll get around to it next year. Or I’ll read some more Octavia Butler, depending on how I like Fledgling (on my list for December).

6. Fantasy: James Oswald: The Damage Done. An Inspector McLean Novel.

Silly little crime novels are generally a personal favourite and I really like how Oswald weaves in and treats the fantasy elements of his world, so I’m looking forward to finding out what poor Tony has to suffer next – originally this book was planned for December, but got pushed back by readings for class.

7. Published Before 1950: Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice

2025 will be the year I finally read P&P, I promise.

8. Independent Publisher: [to be decided]

I got it easy here tbh, Germany has a good share of it’s own publishers, so there’s bound to be something. Ideally I’ll get my hands on the third part of Christian Handel’s Hexenwald-Chroniken, because that’s from a very small fantasy publisher and I loved the first two parts, but idk if that’ll happen yet.

9. Graphic Novel/Comic Book/Manga: Christopher Tauber: Justus Jonas – Eine Interpretation

Since we Germans massively ran away with Robert Arthur’s Three Investigators series, we don’t only have like roughly 200 books more than the American continuation (incl. Crime Busters), we also have a couple spinoffs and one of them is a beautifully dark and painful vision of their future in graphic novel form and we’re getting a sequel to that in Febuary and I can’t wait to see how much that will hurt.

10. Animal on the Cover: [to be decided]

I don’t fucking know yet, I’ll have to see what book I come across.

11. Set in a Country You Have Never Visited: Maurice Leblanc: Arsène Lupin. Das goldene Dreieck. [org. title: Le Triangle d'or]

This year I started making my way through the Arsène Lupin books in earnest and I still have a couple of those left AND I've never been to France – although I certainly aim to change that at some point, I'll definitely get to this book before I get to do that.

12. Science Fiction: Karel Čapek: R.U.R.

R.U.R. is a sci-fi play I’ve been meaning to read for a while now, because I love that both the concept of the robot and the word robot are a Czech invention (based on robota, which describes a form of forced labour). Also I loved what I’ve read of Čapek so far.

13. 2025 Debut Author: [to be decided]

Since I absolutely never keep up with things that get published, this is kinda the furthest thing from a free space for me, but I guess I’ll find something. Absolutely open to recommendations, and obviously also curious to see what other people will read for this space.

14. Memoir: Rob Halford: Confess

Rob Halford’s autobiography has been on my list for a while, I haven’t been able to get it via library so far, maybe I just have to bite the bullet and buy it.

15. Read a Zine, Make a Zine: New York’s Worst Responders. NYPD and 9/11.

I’m always interested in reading about the ways the police system is rotten to the core (I want to say, the ways in which it fails, but lbr, it’s a feature, not a bug, the system works exactly the way most cops want it to), and this has been on my list for a while. The making of a zine is another question.

17. 2024 Award Winner: Cari Hunter: A Calculated Risk

Took a look around the Lamda Awards, this sounded most interesting to me as someone still a crime novel reader at heart, we’ll see if I’ll get to ths or maybe switch in something with a German award.

18. Nonfiction: Learn Something New: Ingrid Strobl: Die Angst kam erst danach

I'm cheating a bit here, since I already know quite a lot about WW2 and the Shoah, but I don't have much knowledge about the role of female resistance fighters yet, and I'm really looking forward to learning more about that. But maybe I'll swap in something about the Golden Age of Piracy or Störtebecker, if I come across something.

19. Social Justice & Activism: bell hooks: The Will to Change

What can I say. Tumblr put it on my radar and I really need to read more theory anyway.

Putting this here as a kind of placeholder, maybe. I’d like to reread it, I think, it’s about one of my longest standing special interests, and we talked about it in class recently, because it really gets into the question of methodology re: historical fiction/writing history/historiography/etc.

I've literally never heard of that one before but it sounds quite interesting; also if possible could it be a Tintin x female reader? Like, I got a wee story in my head; they r work partners but dont get along too well sometimes but it's because they are hiding feelings or something; then eventually when working on a case, that wee "I hate u" thing, happens in a room whilst there on a boat after a disagreement about something (possibly about protecting Chang but that's just the first thing that comes to my mind). There's people that look at each other and just click right away. You and Tintin did it too,in a very...very not that friendly way.

You,a newbie jornalist woman,ready to go to hell and heaven for the best history to write,and Tintin,a veteran at this point,fellow jornalist that would give you great advices for you to have a good start. That was everyone's first thought,but.

You were a bit childish and chaotic exactly because you didn't cared about what you had to do for your story,always complaining about Tintin's plans because most of them demanded time to act. You wanted now and against his words,you jump on the danger making him go right after you.

Yes, he's reckless,but you? 100% worse.

You two did click,but in a hateful way. Haddock aways tried to stop your arguments,never really did it because both of you didn't stop,wanting to always have the last word. It was hard to bear,for everyone,day by day looked more that you two grow the hate from each other.

Not that wrong,but not completely right too. Not saying that he didn't really hate you,believe me,he do. But he hate even more how much time he pass distracted looking at you, taking every little detail. The way your hair is always in a pony tail and showing a little bit of a tongue when you was thinking hard,the little smile you do at something that you writed on your article,your eyes, cute nose...lips...

If someone see the real situation, would be laughing by how comic it all is. This,until you really messed up,almost costing someone's life beside yours. It's ok when is yours,you know how dangerous things can be but,other person...this is a really bad thing. The worst? It was Chang and Haddock as well,basically Tintin's family.

You two,along with Haddock had just saved Chang from kidnappers that focused on him because of some problems with the Wang family,but some of the mens was still following you all,Tintin said for you to stay with them (Chang and Haddock) to help if something goes wrong but you,like always, didn't listen and run alongside him. Just like he thought,some of the guys managed to go from the back near from where Chang and Haddock was,almost getting the both of them. Because of you.

Luckly,being close enough you two run right back knocking the guys down and going away as fast you all could,back for captains ship. It wasn't that hard to say how mad he was with you and he had all the rights for it.

"I asked for one thing [Name],didn't you see how our situation was before doing your reckless plan to just rush forward like a suicidal person?!" - he didn't raised his tone just yet,but the anger was pretty clear in each word.

"Yeah yeah,i'm sorry ok?! I thought i could-"

"Oh well,that's new,you thinking at once. Not even surprised that the only moment you stop to think end up almost getting two people killed!" - he cut you mid sentence.

This,you hated this on the most. If he's right,he use it against you without mercy. Your eyes rolled in annoyance,making him even more angry if that is possible.

"I said sorry,if you don't want it don't take it,i'll not lost time with you now"

You shrug it off,turning your back and walking away for your room. He look at Haddock and Chang for a moment,making sure both of them were ok before leaving to follow you,the discussion didn't ended yet. Haddock tried to stop him,even Chang,but your nonchalant "sorry" get under his skin to the point where both knew what was about to happen.

He didn't even knocked,just open the door looking right at you hearing you groan annoyed.

"Forgot how to knock?-"

"Don't start" - he close the door with a small thud and walk closer.

"Do you know what type of consequences your acts could have caused today? The world don't roll around you [Name]"

"I said sorry already,didn't i? What more do you want?? For me to ask for forgiviness on my knees in front of you??"

"You didn't mean your words,you just said what was necessary to dodge the conversation"

"Conversation my ass,you just come here to lash your stupid anger on me"

He open just a bit wide his eyes,seeming both surprised and confused. How you could be this dense? How you can not see that your careless actions affect people around you too?

"Stupid?? Do you undestand,that what you did almost cost the captain and Chang's life?!" - still didn't scream,but was close.

"They know how to handle-"

"Chang was hurted and Captain was in a ambush [Name]!"

Now,he screamed. You even flinched slightly by how sudden this was,you messed up. Badly.

"Explain then! How they could handle an ambush with one hurted and having only captain against armed people?! How?!"

His voice was loud. Frustration,anger even sadness was there, it's rare to see him like this but how could he not feel this way? That was a close,really close one,if you two wasn't near enough to run back to help them...

"They- they're not child for us to-"

"I TRUSTED YOU!" - it was you openning your eyes wide in surprise.

"I trusted that you would hear,at least this time,my request to stay and help them! Why you always like this?! Why you think so little about people's life?! Isn't captain your friend too?! You don't care about him?! What is wrong with you?!"

Tintin wasn't even lashing,it was a honest vent. He reach the limit with you,this was his try to maybe stop this hateful thing trusting one of the most important thing for him,but this is how you respond? He's right,but not about everything.

"What is wrong?...let's start by the fact that you always make me disappear from the view. I'm a jornalist too,but they never look at my work,only yours! Why i don't care about my life? Is to at least have a little spot since you take everything for yourself! That's way i throw myself forward,trying to get it before you or else everything was for nothing! Being journalist is my dream but you-" - you had to pause to breath,it was a lot of things,basically venting like he did.

"I don't want to be famous. Never wanted,just one time,i only want one time that my story get readed by people...i..." - you stop again,letting a deep breath.

"I know that what i did was wrong and i'm sorry,really sorry" - your tone growing more sincere and remorseful by what you did. But soon,the frustration come back - But dammit,i don't know what to do anymore! It's always you! Tintin that,Tintin this,Tintin Tintin Tintin!"

You finished with an angry groan under your breath. He could tell that at least this time your sorry was genuine,but something still linger on the back of his mind. You almost get them killed for a selfish reason. Not that the ginger-haired boy didn't see it happening. Both of you writed articles but only his was on the newspaper,of course it was unfair with you,even more because he readed and it was good,your details,explanations about the case,overal view of everything. He was still angry but...confused?

"Why is always you?!" - he snap back when you quickly turn to face him,walking closer.

"I'm a journalist too,i make articles too but is always,only about you!"

"It's...not my fault-"

"Yes it is!"

"Don't change the subject! You still risk other peoples life for a selfish reason,just because you envy me??"

Neither him knew what he was saying about exactly. Talking back by impulse,his words get you off guard. He was right again,wasn't he? Being this arrogant towards him since the first day was just...envy. You wanted be like him,be him. How embarrassing this sounds, even more than the other little thing on the back of your mind.

"I...what are you talking about? Me?? Envying you? Oh come on. Drop the attitude little man,you're only embarrassing yourself" - internally,you was making a face palm at how childish this comeback sounded.

"Embarrassing myself? You're the one acting like a little kid because of something foolish like envy. Grow up [Name]. You're only embarrassing yourself"

"You didn't- you know what?! Fuck you!" - you give a step closer looking at him still angry.

"Say what?!-" - he step forward too.

"That's it! I'm done with your shit! I said sorry already,even said more than i should. I'm tired of your baby face in front of me!"

"Said the one who don't even have a brain to think properly about her own decisions!"

Again, another step near. Every curse was right followed by a step until you two were close looking deep in each other's eyes. Your voices sounded angry, your eyes not and you both realized it. That feeling on the back of your head tingling by the proximity...

The other manga I've been keeping up with that recently just ended! And I'm going to talk about it!

Ayaka-chan wa Hiroko-senpai ni Koishiteru (Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko!) by Sal Jiang

A lesbian office drama written by a Twitter artist I really like! Ayaka has a crush on her senior at work, Hiroko, and constantly tries to make Hiroko notice her. Hiroko is a lesbian who’s closeted at work and trying her hardest not to fall for Ayaka, who she thinks is an oblivious straight girl. The appeal is the comedy of watching two women made stupid by love freak out over each other, underlined by queer angst.

Things I like about it:

Charming characters! The main couple is SO easy to fall in love with and root for- they are so earnest and funny and have great chemistry. It also doesn’t hurt that they’re drawn REALLY well with fun, expressive faces and cute designs.

Themes of queerness as identity and community! More in the spoiler section, but my favorite scenes in this story take place in in a gay bar with a character’s WLW friendgroup as they talk about being gay. The community is my favorite part of being queer and I never see it reflected in manga, and I love how much fun and love is put into the scenes with the friendgroup.

You can read the official English comic online here! I think this is the most affordable I’ve ever seen a manga actually, so it’s definitely worth a buy! I will admit I am using the Dynasty Scans pages in the spoiler section of this post, since that’s the version I read before finding out about the official English version.

Great characters and chemistry

Ayaka is SO cute. I love pretty femme girls who are kind of bratty, and she’s portrayed in a way where you know the author’s having so much fun with her.

Some random out of order/context Ayaka faces from the earlier chapters! I forgot how cute and sweet she comes off in the earlier chapters, she’s a total goblin later lol

Hiroko is also such a fun character! I love the contrast between a really serious, straight laced, determined-to-not-fall-in-love person at work to uhhhhh womanizer at night lol.

Speaking of fun, a character interaction trope I’ll never get tired of are “characters who comedically overreact when they’re in love with someone” and that fits this couple to a T!

I could keep showing screenshots of these two until I basically go through the entire comic lol.

But even outside the main two, I really like the side characters as well! A standout is Risa - Ayaka’s colleague who’s also a baby gay and has a crush on her. I’m unusual in that I usually like love triangles, but I do think this one is written really well! She’s sympathetic, her doomed longing for Ayaka is delicious and relatable. (Spoilers) I love how her selfishness and selflessness is balanced- her crush and competition with Hiroko makes her sabotage Ayaka’s crush in small ways in the beginning, but she fundamentally cares for her friend and roots for them in the end. Also, (BIG SPOILERS) she and Ayaka end up dating and breaking up but still remain friends, which is another favorite trope of mine. (HUGE SPOILERS) I love this page, any manga that includes a scene like this is top tier for me…. She feels realistic and her story is really sweet!

Queer community and identity

This section has more spoilers than the last one!! If you haven’t read this comic but plan on it, I recommend you not read this part!!

In my last post, I said that Yuri as a genre doesn’t need to have anything about queerness as an identity to be good, but then I realized that most of my favorites did have a focus on identity…. Yeah IDK what to say LOL. But the identity aspect is a big plot point/theme of this story, and it’s written SUPER well.

First of all- Hiroko’s backstory centers on homophobia and her being super closeted at her workplace. I’m iffy on homophobia stories (just cause I’ve read a lot of them and they tend to hit on the same points), but the homophobia theme leads to one of my fav scenes:

Context: Risa knows Hiroko is closeted and rants about it to the bartender at a lesbian bar who knows Hiroko.

I love this focus on how queer people interact with the straight world, and the generational divide between older and younger queers. I can only speak from a US perspective, but progress around LGBTQ acceptance has come so far and so fast the past few years that if I was born a few years earlier or a few years later, I’d have a radically different life experience. It’s something I think about a lot when reading memoirs and articles by older queer people, and contrasting that with my life and the observed lives of people younger than me online. This theme is explored well in this story- the cultural tensions between Hiroko and Ayaka and Risa, how straight people may react more positively to queer people now but it’s still not perfect, and how Hiroko has changed her workplace for the better.

Also speaking of the lesbian bar- I love the girls at the bar lol. Right after the scene with Risa, a gaggle of lesbians come in and comfort her and it’s SOOOO heartwarming and cute. I love how this friendgroup is written- supportive, but also will call you out.

It’s so fun to read these guys gossip, give each other relationship advice, bicker with each other, and be horny at women together.

Hiroko’s relationship with the girls is more bickering, but Risa and Ayaka end up going to them for advice a lot which is so sweet and the elder/baby queer relationship I need (not portrayed because I can’t find a screenshot that doesn’t reveal a big plot twist)

I said before in my last post but I just love this issue. I'm sure someone better at literary analysis could explain better than me, but the artwork, the COLORS, the story is all just sooo good and I'm putting it all in my MOUTH. I especially love the messaging between doing what's logical and doing what's right, cause at the end of the day morality is a subjective human trait, and who's to say that killing millions of people for the potential benefit of billions isn't a noble thing to do? Also a rare Uno L in this issue but he's LEARNING okay. He's just a little guy he's just a little hyperintelligent sentient building ok.... leaf him alone........

Btw in case you haven't noticed by now this issue also happens to be what the blog description of @duckblr-book-club is based on and no I'm not the one that wrote that. THE VOID RANT

OK, so I guess we're doing this now because of the last post 👏

VOID was originally a gender-swapped NULL (hence the name) but as I fleshed out the idea, I realized that she had some potential as her own character.

I originally made VOID with a wolfcut bob, trying to come up with a semi-modest haircut to mirror NULL's mini updo.

HOWEVER, roughly around the same time I pulled this idea out of my ass, NULL hit the public domain after mystman's BB+ ARG was solved (THAT WAS WILD, I NEVER EXPECTED THE REWARD TO BE THE PUBLIC DOMAIN RIGHTS TO NULL, HOLY SHIT, THAT MAN IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL), making me think "HMMMM 🤔 NULL&VOID would be a cute ship dynamic", so I went ahead and humored the idea of them being a couple for a little bit, instead of VOID just being a vanilla NULL swap.

Finding myself completely enamored by the idea, they eventually turned into a tragic couple (I'll get to that at a later date), even turning into a social commentary of sorts about something I face myself (I'll also get deeper into this as production goes on, cuz it's a pretty sensitive topic for me and this is already probably gonna be a pretty long post). It became a bit of a comfort ship for me to help me work through this issue via my art.

Now, since NULL was public domain, I was already planning on adding him into a comic I was developing; MOUSE (no doubt you'll be hearing more about that too since these two idiots are a part of it now).

I'd been writing it since 2007 on and off, but lacked the amount story beats I felt necessary to turn it into a fully-fledged series. But with these two being 'glitched' characters, they fit the vibe perfectly, offering the perfect opportunity to 'immortalize' them in the pages of this story while also adding a bit more content to a story that so desperately needed it.

God willing, I can only hope I do them, as well as my message, justice.

I'll no doubt be speaking more about this in the future, along with my other original content (like, non-BBIEAL stuff, if yinz're interested—and even if you're not interested, because my therapist told me to stfu and do it already cuz I have good ideas (??) and I should try it sometime cuz it'll help with my self-esteem or some shit)

Draco Noir will be a fun one, holy crap, hahaha

I made that one upsetting on PURPOSE; I... Am SO SCARED about how people will react to it, cuz it'll either be super edgy and everyone (who reads it) will love it, or everyone will take it the absolute wrong way and cancel me for it, but just know that it's SUPPOSED to be an uncomfortable read in advance, okay? Okay. Cool, please don't curbstomp me if it makes it to print 😭🙏

tldr; it's a gritty, grimdark crime drama about a dragon detective.

So lemme know if you're into that shit, too.

Also, there's a Baldi reference character in one of the volumes I have planned (because of course there is) but it begins and ends with his name being 'Professor B' and the way he's designed. Everything else is completely original, although I'll probably end up sprinkling in a few subtle references to the game and fandom lore with him.

Actually I have been working on two of them recently! (Another reason why I’ve been so inactive 😭)

The one I’ve have the most work done for is this one: 5 stages of grief

TW// death

It’s about a girl who’s “bestfriend” was killed in a freak accident and her finally realizing how much of an asshole she is. Due to her ego and horrible personality, she tries to not only act like she doesn’t care but also refuses to even acknowledge his death and how it happened. This causes her best friend to come back and pay her a little visit one last time, allowing her to finally go through the 5 stages of grief.

Ok here’s the other one. Surprisingly the story for this one is completely planned out I just haven’t finished drawing the panels for it but uh here’s the little cover thing and description <3

When two recent high school graduates apply for their dream college and horribly fail the entrance exam, they get the help of their childhood friend, Neo, to create their own underground business themselves. Can these broke losers achieve their dream of becoming the most influential villainous business, while also balancing their college life? Bruh idk, read to find out!

Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War - two students are in love with eachother but refuse to "lose" and admit their feelings. Instead, they have increasingly convoluted plans to get the other to confess.

Okay I will admit. this Is a romance and also ive only seen the anime. So actually this would fall more under anime recs bcs the english dub voice acting is AMAZING. Anyway tho its a comedy that I really enjoy. Its about romance but like. Idk I dont read/watch romance often so I cant say "its not like the standard romance plot". But its less about them Falling In Love and more about them Overthinking Everything And Being Silly. ALSO !! tho it takes a bit, it does go into the characters a lot. Very centred on the characters relationships !! Not just romantically between the main two, but in general.

Why I think you would like it: similar in "vibe" to nozaki-kun. Funny!! But it has its moments of seriousness and it understands its characters well.

Mushishi - Eye Have Not Read This im sorry 🙏 i havent even seen the anime so I dont actually know much about it but ive been recced it so many times I figure I should pass it to you.

If u like Natsume's Book of Friends you'll enjoy this. Genuinely I think this is my strongest rec for you on this list even tho I've never seen it. I really do think u wld enjoy 👍

This one is a little sad. More likeeee. Meloncholy, yk? I dont have much to say about it. Very good manga.

Why I think you would like it: The character relationship between the two girls seems like something you would enjoy.

Look Back - to be super honest its been over a year since I read this I dont fully remember what happens. Theres this girl wjo draws comics for her elementary school newsletter. Shes funny so every1 really likes her and her comics. at some point another comic appears, but its actually just four panels of background art. Its so beautifully drawn that the other students begin to fawn over it. Angry kver her loss of attention, the first girl goes to meet the girl making these new comics (The background girl doesnt go to school, she works at home). Thr end up becoming friends and the story shows how their friendship develops and changes, growing closer and growing further apart.

The manga is p short for. a manga but its actually just a Really Long oneshot. Its rlly good. not much else to say.

Why I think you would like it: Very similar to Blue Period. About art and how it reflects people. Also very strongly driven by the relationship between the two girls.

The Girl From The Other Side - ive been typing so much i really cant give a whole review on this. Similar to WHA. kinda. beautiful art. read it u will enjoy it

Weekly Update November 15, 2024

I’m in a real bad spot again, everything I’ve been trying keeps going wrong, but i did get some art stuff done.

I tried writing some shorter songs on a whim with some 16 bit soundfonts and i think they came out pretty well. Add 3 more to the ‘songs i finished but can’t release yet’ pile. Also made some midis for two more vocal parts, one for a cover (FF), one for an original (LF), both of which have finished instrumentals. Started tuning FF, am going to try some of the new strategies i tested a few weeks ago. Another vocal original, BATB, that I’ve been on and off working on is probably done? I think? I finished mixing the vocal part, another one for the pile. Also fixed a random glitch that would sometimes happen where an instrument would randomly play a phantom note that didn’t exist in the midi part at the very start of a song, which was causing issue with three songs. Also re-edited Blow Off Steam, since the mixing was fucking awful idk what was wrong with me to think that would be passable. I’ll release it on YouTube once I have motivation to open my computer. I really need to just sit down and draw some cover art but every time i try everything in my life keeps going wrong I’m cursed i swear. It’s fine it’ll get done eventually, i started on one of them this week and so far it looks good. I thumbnailed some more that also look fine. I just need life to cut me a break so i can draw. I just want a break. One break.

I tried working on the comic this week too, got about half of page 12 inked. The comic looks great and is fun to read through and i love how it’s coming out but again every time I try to work on it bad things happen to me that get in the way. I want to give a deadline and say ‘oh, it’ll be done on (x date)’ but I can’t. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Maybe today I’ll go look at tapas and see how things are over there, since I can’t really work on anything. I haven’t really thought about how I’d go about releasing the damn thing once it is finished other than ‘probably not webtoon, I’ve never heard anyone say anything positive about webtoon’.

I made storyboards/thumbnails for another animation project, smaller one for one of the smaller unreleased songs I’m sitting on. I looked into after effects again and it should be able to do some of the effects I thought I was going to need to learn blender for, which is great because I don’t want to mess with blender yet. There’s a certain character who I’ve only really drawn a couple times because I wanted her to have a really unique visual style, so once I have myself together I’d like to try drawing her and rendering her with the new tricks I learned in after effects, but again things need to get better first, and that’s unlikely.

Last bit of hope for progress next week would be the epithet erased TTRPG. I finished off the first tileset I had done and actually sat down to turn it into some maps, and it works really well. Ended up watching through the original anime campaign a bit further too, which inspired me to get some statblocks done and some character minis sketched. Also completely rewrote stage 6 for the second time but I think this time it’ll stick. A couple more NPC ideas have been floating around for that and I might post a mini once I have more. Again I’m hesitant to post anything visual for that, since my plan is currently to turn the campaign into a prewritten module for other people to run, release the module for free so everyone can play, and then release the optional maps and minis as a paid package, so I can make a bit from my work but also make the system more accessible to people for free. The fifth anniversary streams are this weekend, including one that is set to cover the updated system book, hopefully that should give me the motivation to get going, and then if that goes well that should give me motivation for my other projects. Everything I’m doing is intertwined with each other and with my mood, so if nothing else bad happens I should be getting better, but again there’s still a couple things that can go wrong and they certainly will because I’m not allowed to have anything.

Sorry again for how gloomy this post has been, everything seems to be going wrong but I’m going to keep trying. I might be slow again for a while but that’s fine, that’s why I loaded up my queue with old art. Thank you everyone for sticking through it, and I’m glad you guys have been enjoying the old art. I shuffled the queue so some of it isn’t as old as others, but even so a good number of you are seeing pieces for the first time. I really hope I’ll have something big to show soon!
