MALUM Reimagines LAST SHIFT to Fulfill Its Terrifying Potential
MALUM follows a similar storyline to its original LAST SHIFT, but expands the mythology behind the terrors and breathes new life into an underrated film. #MalumMovie #FeedTheDemon
It is rare to see a film remade at the hands of its original visionary, but for the 2014 horror film Last Shift, director Anthony DiBlasi felt it necessary. Malum follows a similar storyline as the original but expands the mythology behind the terrors and breathes new life into an underrated film. Rookie police officer Jessica (Jessica Sula) has a simple first assignment at the old station,…

So i've been keeping track of every horror movie that I watched for the first time this year. I started doing it because my wife was doing the same thing with books and I need something to do while she reading.  So I chose comic books and I chose horror movies and as of today. I've officially broke 50 movies and watched my 51st.
I've been rating every movie that I watch for the first time out of five stars and keeping a list on my phone. I'm really enjoying doing this and a lot of my thoughts from years ago have changed. This has been fun.

Malum is a remake of Last Shift that came out last year. I meant to watch it around the same time as that but it wasn't out online at that time so I just put it off for next year aka now.
I don't have a vivid, crystal clear recollection of every beat that happens in Last Shift, but this is basically the same story. A rookie cop is charged with holding down the fort at a station that's being closed, and that station just happened to be where a demon-worshipping cult killed themselves. But we're delving a little deeper into her family drama where instead of her father being killed in the line of duty while arresting the cultists, now he shot up the precinct a few days after the cultists were arrested (obviously under supernatural control). And she volunteered for the assignment because she wants to "solve the mystery".
I really don't think discharging your firearm to break open a locker can be justified.
Okay, so in this one, the homeless man that trespasses in the station is the father of one of the cult's victims. That makes sense.
Holding being covered in hallucinogenic black mold is definitely an alternate take to the supernatural events, though I'm not convinced it's not a convenient coverup.
Oh, we're getting found footage up in here.
HER MOM!?
Okay, I think I actually liked the original better. This was okay, but that one's "she was killing the hazmat workers" ending was a lot better than this "the cultists won" ending. Here, there was no ambiguity to events, the cultists were really invading the police station and they really abducted the survivors who had been rescued in order to kill them in the station. I mean, there was no ambiguity aside from when Jessica hallucinated and shot her mom, I should say. Also, Paimon being the cult's deity and their explanation that he was the ruler of Hell before Lucifer fell was distinctive and memorable, whereas now they worship "the Low God" and his emissary is a scary pentagram-faced monster that's gonna getcha. It just feels weaker overall. Maybe this is why Malum didn't make as nearly as much of a splash as I was expecting.
