So i've been keeping track of every horror movie that I watched for the first time this year. I started doing it because my wife was doing the same thing with books and I need something to do while she reading.  So I chose comic books and I chose horror movies and as of today. I've officially broke 50 movies and watched my 51st. 

I've been rating every movie that I watch for the first time out of five stars and keeping a list on my phone. I'm really enjoying doing this and a lot of my thoughts from years ago have changed. This has been fun.

31 Nights of Halloween Horror: day 3

Tonight's choice is a remake/reimagining of a super creepy movie (Last Shift) that I already love. It has the same director but with a whole new cast and larger budget. Today's choice was: Malum

I rated this movie 5/10. It may have had more money and effects, but sadly I think it may have hurt the movie more than helped. While Last Shift was creepy and effective, Malum was a regular ol' run of the mill horror movie. The added backstory was fineeeee, but certain things just made this movie corny instead of creepy. I actually like this main actress usually, but not in this. Everything was a bit too over the top, the cult members were so cringey instead of being intimidating, the things they changed weren't things that needed changing. The whole monster reveal near the end was also a miss for me. Cool looking, but silly instead of scary. Last Shift is by far the better and creepier film, so if you're a fan of that one, don't go into this one expecting much.

Some of the monster/dead people scenes DID look cool, thanks to the larger budget for this movie compared to Last Shift, but still some of them came off silly instead of realistic. When that one girl's head popped off I was like:

OCTOBER HORROR MOVIES 2022 (L) LAST SHIFT

A rookie cop has to spend her first night shift watching over the old soon-to-be-closed-for-good police station. She's supposed to be the only one there, waiting for the crew that's going to show up sometime in the wee hours to close out the last bits of old evidence before they lock the doors for the last time. So, of course, the weird shit starts happening as soon as she's alone.

I have passed this movie by on Netflix so damn many times, because it has some of the least original, "yo bro, you scared enough?!" bullshit promo images. Absolutely nothing about its promo material makes it stand out from any other cheap, crappy modern films you can find populating the bottom of the "Horror" section of any streaming service. But, you know what? It's not bad. It's definitely a low-budget, one-location wonder, but they make the most of it. Imagine a scaled-down version of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 and swap out the criminals for malevolent spirits, and you've got the gist of it. Lead actor Juliana Harkavy does almost all the work here, as she's barely paired with any other actors who aren't talking to her over the phone or made up as bloody spirits giggling in the dark, and she does a pretty good job. (For you DC fans, she would go on to play Black Canary in Arrow and The Flash on TV) There's only one scene that sticks out badly, when our main character gets an info dump that stops the plot cold, from a new random character who is never seen again. Later in the film, all the same information she dumped is repeated in a way that's more organic to the movie, and I was left scratching my head, wondering, "Why was that scene there?" Then IMDB gave me my answer: the random new character who is never seen again is played by the director's wife.

Last Shift relies a little too much on jump scares and incessant "eerie tension" music, but it gets the job done. Writer/director Anthony DiBlasi used to work for Clive Barker's production company, and he's obviously competent at horror movies (nepotistic casting notwithstanding). It feels like a good first attempt; and it looks like he's getting a second attempt at it, since the newest item on his IMDB page is "Untitled Last Shift Reboot". And, yeah, his wife is listed in the cast.

02/11/25 Diary

It's my 24th birthday soon, and today was my last day at my now old job because I'm starting a new job, close to my dream job really

I'll be working at a new casino hotel in the bakery section of the kitchen, it doesn't quite feel real yet, might feel more real once I actually start

The 2 weeks before my practical interview were super anxiety inducing but I also went to my first real party during that time, my twins friends bands party, a metal band

I had a massive ear infection during the interview which was causing me more and more pain as time went on, lasted over 2 weeks even with meds

Main plan for my birthday is to make myself a fancy cake since I learned to bake a nice one for the interview, and my twin and his chef friend are making ramen for us, hopefully we'll play Risk too

I made good bye cookies for everyone and took some goodbye photos after closing today as a goodbye, some videos too but those were all recorded on TikTok

I was taking these super quickly so not really any thought into my face or poses lol

I'm mostly writing in my diary tonight for the first time in months this time because I'm lonely again, I just wanna be kissed senseless by a pretty woman siiiiigh

Being Demi sucks sometimes, I'm turning 24 in a few days and I've never properly made out with someone, I've kissed 2 people, one of each sex, and they were 5 years apart, just before I turned 18, and just over a year ago. Wish me luck this year in at least finding a fling to lose my making out virginity too before I turn 25
